Review: When deciding on tracks to release on '45' for the first time, the Dynamite Cuts team seems to mine a mixture of sought-after sets, familiar favourites and overlooked obscurities. This single falls int the latter category, featuring as it does two killer cuts from Funk In Hell, a 1976 album by library music collective-turned-instrumental funk outfit Button Down Brass (a band founded by trumpeter and arranger Ray Davies). A-side 'Superstition' is simply superb: a down-low cover of Stevie Wonder classic 'Superstition' that sits somewhere between down-low library funk and Blaxploitation movie soundtracks, with a dash of big band funk thrown in. Instrumental flipside 'Shades of Hades' is equally as vibrant, with elongated electric guitar notes, heady hand percussion and spacey synth sounds combining superbly with spy-funk horns and weighty bass.As played by DJ Muro from Japan

Review: Dave Welding's Soul Junction has another great package here from The Hill District. This was a group of working musicians that was initially assembled by bassist Walter "Sonny" Hughes who was impressed with them after seeing them rehearse one afternoon. They only ever managed to record one 45, however, and it is this one, and it has overmuch remained hard to find over the years. Hill District's 'You're Scared Of Falling In Love' is glorious sunny and carefree soul with gentle rhythms and great vocal work. Richie Merrett then steps up on the flip with 'You'll Always Have Yesterday Standing By' which is much more verily sentimental and pained.

Review: This powerhouse 7" pairs two iconic tracks that have left lasting marks on music history. On one side, Gloria Jones' original 1964 version of 'Tainted Love' shines. Review: Founded by Roy Ayers in Cincinnati in 1976 as a vehicle for his songs and productions - though, interestingly, he was never a member of the band RAMP recorded and released one album, 1977's sun-soaked jazz-funk opus, Come Into Knowledge. This fantastic 45 from South Street Records' new South Street Soul offshoot showcases two of the set's most admired and in-demand cuts. Edwin Birdsong and William Allen share production credits with Ayers on 'Daylight', a shuffling, dewy-eyed, afternoon-ready delight whose slow groove, meandering synth solos and blissful female vocals recall another Ayers' classic 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine'. Fittingly, RAMP's fine, soft-focus take on that tune can be found on side B.

Review: Michigan-via-Ohio gospel group Rance Allen have been going for decades, and thanks to Expansion Records, two of their best known tunes now have a chance at relistenership. 'I Feel Like Going' on barely saw a resurfacing on YouTube, but just one listen and we're sure... this is a shockingly important slice of wax, with slapping electronic disco-soul production embedding sax, viola and castanets in what ought to be considered a criminally undersought pair of dance opals. A modern soul masterclass.

Review: Barbara Randolph's 'I Got A Feeling,' originally released on September 14, 1967, is a stellar example of classic soul, now available in a new reissue on 7" vinyl. Barbara Randolph, born May 5, 1942, in Detroit was a notable singer and actress. A former member of The Platters in 1964, she later recorded for Motown during the mid to late 60s. Her standout 'I Got A Feeling,' features uplifting lyrics and a fantastic backing band, reminiscent of The Supremes' sound. The wonderful horns add a vibrant touch. On Side-2, 'You Got Me Hurtin' All Over' bursts with catchy, blistering energy, giving you the magic of 1960s soul. This reissue preserves the original tracklist, offering a delightful experience for funk and soul enthusiasts.

Review: First released way back in 1999, Raphael Saadiq's Q-Tip-sporting "Get Involved" is a warm and woozy, retro-futurist chunk of soul/hip-hop fusion that harked back to an earlier musical age. It remains an arguably underappreciated dancefloor bomb and here gets the reissue treatment courtesy of the freshly lauched 45 Jams imprint. It comes backed by another stone cold classic from Q-Tip, "Vivrant Thing" - a cut first featured on the flipside of the Tribe Called Quest member's much more celebrated "Breathe Don't Stop" single. It's a little more stripped back than the A-side, with Q-Tip delivering his distinctive flows over a crunchy and fuzzy, Jay Dee produced backing track crafted from samples from an old funk record.

Review: While an independent disco classic in its own right, Rare Pleasure's 1976 gem 'Let Me Down Easy' is probably best-known for providing David Morales with the famous piano riff that was such a big part of his 1998 dancefloor smash 'Needin' You'. Here the sensational disco classic gets the reissue treatment courtesy of South Street Disco. Review: Well, straight out of the bocks in the early new year, we have already got a huge new tune on our hands. It comes from the acclaimed Ras Tweed in cahoots with Spanish producer Roberto Sanchez who together roll deep on 'Liard N Theef' with its big horns and rubbery low ends. It's a fusion of Afrobeat, soul and funk on a reggae rhythm that has conscious vocals about reconnecting with the earth. Flip it over and you will get a superb trombone-led version for sunnier days.

Review: The so-far superb Boom Bap Classics label kicks on with a sixth fantastic slab of old school gold. This time once more they offer up underground 90s rap gems in the form of a brilliant neck-snapper from West Coast lyrical don Rasco. His 'Unassisted' is a widely respected cut that finds favour with heads and backpackers and turntablists alike thanks to its hard bars and chord-laced bumping beats. Review: Real Velour's Champions on Bordello A Parigi is an excellent blend of Italo house and new wave, evoking the sounds of Heaven 17 and early New Order. Side-1's 'Champions' brings a vibrant 80s dance sound to life, combining warm strings, throbbing bass, and crisp drums with shining synth lines. The track's indie and synth-pop influences merge seamlessly, creating memorable hooks that are both addictive and joyous. The bittersweet lyrics add a layer of depth, telling a story of change and lost dreams, giving the track an emotional weight beneath its uplifting melodies. On Side-2, the instrumental version of allow's the intricate synth work to take center stage. The cold wave edge is softened, highlighting the bright and uplifting melodies that blend electro disco with Italo influences. Review: Next time your kid is going through the "why" phase, give them this record. 'Step Inside My World' by The Reason Why - an incredibly obscure band releasing with Polydor originally in 1977 - is an excellent modern soul mid-tempo dancer, having remained in hot demand for many years thanks to its sensitive recording and lyrical matter. With original issue copies having reportedly sold for roughly L700, we can only affirm that the two songs on the record amount to no less than sonic blessings, spanning keen emotivity and string-laden passion.

Review: If you're after fresh workouts for body-popping break-dance sessions, this 45 from John Reed & The Automatics on Funk Night Records should be essential listening. While there's something undeniably alluring about the more suspenseful B-side, 'Space Break' - where effects-laden electric guitar licks and alien-sounding synths rise above a metronomic bassline and a relaxed funk break - it's the more up-tempo A-side, 'Stardust Break', that's the real winner. Based around drum-breaks that reference 'Apache' and a seriously squelchy synth bassline, it's an intergalactic club jam that's just tailor-made for headpins, windmills and caterpillars.

Review: Reflex was a band assembled in the 1980s by drummer David Humphrey from bands including Public Image Ltd. and they put pout their biggest hit 'Funny Situation' privately via Star Records in 1981. Paint A Picture now serve up a first ever fully remastered and licensed reissue of the superb 7". An original will cost you upwards of L200 if you can find it so this is welcome indeed. The record includes an insert with some content on the release, which was made in the same studio and engineered by the same man as the classic Britfunk anthem 'Southern Freeze.' It is similarly tight and funky and will make any floor go off.

Review: A curious artefact of Northern Soul history, this limited one-sided 7" by Eddie Regan was pressed by Anchor UK with two conflicting release dates, though 1978 is believed to be correct. Dropped during the peak of the Northern Soul explosion in the UK, 'Playing Hide & Seek' delivers a potent dose of heartfelt vocals and dancefloor-ready soul. Its raw, urgent energy and emotive delivery have made it a cult favourite, with two Northern Soul classics featured back-to-back on some issues. Do not sleep, because this will fly.

Review: With a storied history stretching right back to the mid-1990s, Reggae Disco Rockers are one of Japan's longest-serving reggae and rocksteady bands. While they're best-known for their original songs, they've delivered some killer cover versions over the years - including 2021's sun-splashed reggae re-imagining of Frankie Knuckles' classic house track 'The Whistle Song'. This seven-inch features another: the band's immersive, loved-up, super-sweet lover's rock-meets-Balearic reggae take on Neil Young classic 'Harvest Moon', featuring some suitably weary, emotive lead vocals from Marter. Review: Bump'n'Grind has served up some serious heat across its first few 7"s and for this new one it taps into the fertile ground where hip-hop, funk, r&b, soul and boogie all intersect. The tunes are lovely and lo-fi with roughhewn analogue edges and a dusty vibe that is immediately appealing. Reggie B is the man behind them and first up he says 'Get Some Love' feat LeeLee A Stanwyck & Marcus Machado - its rich in dazzling chords and Prince style funk with catchy as hell vocals. 'Find My Way' is a hip hop beatdown with plenty of swagger and sugary synths.

Review: Reggie Soul And The Soul Swingers dropped their soul classic 'My World Of Ecstasy' back in 1969 on the Capri Records label. It is a cult and highly sought-after gem even all these decades later and there is currently just one second hand copy to be found and it will cost you almost four figures to own. Or you could buy this reissue on Soul Junction which is also backed with the raw and guttural 'Might Good Loving'. It hits hard, at high speed, with frantic drums and horns. 'My World Of Ecstasy' meanwhile is more sedate, with fluttery jazz melodies and gentle drums, great harmonies and a smoky lead.

''Till I Get My Share' is a more direct cut with a passionate vocal and big horn stabs over prickly rhythms. It's one of his earlier singles from 1972 but still bangs in 2021.

Review: Renaldo Domino has nothing to do with the pizza chain, of course - in fact, he was so named because his voice was sweet as sugar (Domino is an American sugar brand, if you didn't know.) He had a very short but sweet - pun intended - a career that saw him drop tunes on Mercury subsidiaries Smash and Blue Rock, and later Twinight records. They managed to make an impact and for that reason, he was inspired to get back to making new music in 2019. 'I'm Hip To Your Game' was his first single and one that was soon re-recorded for a second release - it's deep and warm with lavish strings where the A-side has a swinging Northern Soul vibe.

Review: Jacques Renault is almost certainly not dead. Perhaps resurrected from the town of Twin Peaks, and now working in a much less shady line of duty than bartending-come-trafficking - now he runs the label Let's Play House - we're more than happy to welcome this producer's new pair of cut-up funk edits. First comes 'That's What You Are', replete with soul-clenching digi strings and bopping bass licks. French house flair comes on the B-side, 'My Love Is Guaranteed', with resampled pre-drops harkening to glorious trumpet trains and glitching 'oh!'s.
