Greedy G
Greedy G (12")
Cat: SJR 47812. Rel: 23 Jul 21
Bentford All Stars - "Greedy G" (3:40)
Dub Specialist - "Granny Scratch Scratch" (3:57)
Review: For the latest in their series of "giant 45s" - loud 12" pressings of classic cuts from the Studio One vaults - Soul Jazz has decided to offer-up a fresh pressing of Brentford All Stars' 'Greedy G'. Based on James Brown classic 'Get On The Good Foot', the track was famously sampled by Boogie Down Productions on their iconic cut 'Jack of Spades'. It remains a bona fide party classic, adding a bass-heavy, Hammond-heavy reggae spin to Brown's insatiable funk groove. As it did the last time Soul Jazz issued it back in 1988, it comes backed with the deeper and more laidback 'Granny Scratch Scratch', another classic cut from Studio One's in-house backing band.

When Jah Come (King David mix) (3:45)
When Jah Come (feat Jah Shaka - Zulu mix) (3:45)
When Jah Come (Russ D mix) (3:47)
Review: Marking Indica Dubs' 100th release in serious style, 'When Jah Come' by Danman takes the form of a powerful tribute to the late Jah Shaka, whose influence shaped generations of dub and roots sounds and musicians. This long-anticipated dubplate was famously championed by Shaka himself and comes laden with deep, earth-shattering basslines, spiritual vocals that touch your inner psyche and militant rhythms with unmistakable reverence. It is a celebration and a memorial that honours Shaka's legacy while showcasing Danman's ever-commanding voice and Indica Dubs' unrivalled production strength.

It Takes Two To Tango

It Takes Two To Tango (3:23)
Jux In (dub) (4:03)
Review: Junior Delgado's album It Takes Two To Tango on the Fashion label arrived in 1986 and brought plenty of new ideas to the dancehall and lovers rock sounds of the time. It is one of an impressive 22 he has penned over his long career and now the title track from it has been pressed up to this 7" courtesy of the Real Rock imprint. 'It Takes Two To Tango' is a nice heavy roller with fat drums and bass and some great vocal work up top. On the flip is 'Jux In' (dub) which is a version of the A-side by Jux & The A Class Crew which adds some nice shiny synth smears that swirl about the mix.

Dreadsquad - "Satisfaction" (feat Kasia Malenda & Jman) (3:25)
Koffee - "Toast" (3:22)
Review: The Polish-born Dreadsquad is something of a legendary party rocker and reggae mash-up king. He makes a debut here on the Uluru label with a cover and a remix. The A-side is his reggae and ska take on the classic 'Satisfaction' which has the vocals re-sung and the rhythm totally rebuilt with big horns, razor-sharp hi-hats and fat drums. On the flipside is Grammy-nominated Koffee who has brought plenty of her deep cultural roots to her music, specifically on last year's standout album. 'Toast' becomes a swagger ska tune with the original vocals loud and proud.

Review: Although since 2010 he has been a fully qualified mental health advisor living in the United States, back in the 70s , Wade "Jimmy" Dyce was a key original member of Cultural Roots. He was one of the four vocalists in the harmony group who worked with producer Donovan Germain and released several classics of the day on the Greensleeves label. Wade went it alone in the 80s and lay down some of his own jams with plenty of top musicians at Chris Stanley's famous Music Mountain studio. Now a bunch of them are getting pressed up to vinyl, including this one, the mighty 'Humble.'

King Stanley - "Crisis" (3:11)
Dub Seva - "Dub Crisis" (3:11)
Prince Jamo - "Joke" (3:14)
Dub Seva - "No Joke Dub" (3:12)
Review: American label Deep Bow makes a notable vinyl debut with this heavyweight 10" featuring King Stanley and Prince Jamo, both voicing over a thunderous riddim crafted by producer Dub Sev?. This roots-driven slab stars with King Stanley's passionate cries over sleek drums with shiny digital synths and neat guitar licks. It stays true to the deep, meditative spirit of sound system culture and becomes much more roomy and spaced out in the hands of Dub Seva. Prince Jamo's 'Joke' has a cleaner vocal and some natty keys, and also gets dubbed out by Dub Seva. A strong introduction from Deep Bow that showcases talent from both sides of the Atlantic.

Know How You Stand (10:02)
Review: One of many Studio One-affiliated releases to crop up as of late, Dadawah's 'Peace And Love / Wadadasow' is a rarity few heads can claim to know. A side alias of practising Rastafarian and musician Ras Michael (Michael George Henry), Dadawah ended up his magnum opus despite original intent as a lower-key piece. This one's made up of a weird and wonderful cross-section of styles: wah guitar, plodding bass and the rhythmic chants of his religious music influence of choice, the Nyabhinghi - Rastafarian devotional music combining African drumming and gospel. A classic, reissued whirlwind of laid-back joy.

Review: Robert Dallas's latest album is another doozy for lovers of real reggae. Each soulful vocal track is paired with a companion dub version by Hermit Dubz which makes this a dual-pronged attack with jams for all caissons. Dallas's signature style shines throughout as he blends conscious lyrics with rich melodies while Hermit Dubz's expertly crafted interpretations add depth and dimension. In all, this means this one is a perfect fusion of traditional reggae vibes and modern production techniques.

Review: After a slew of teasers out earlier this year, Deepchord (Rod Modell) eases ever deeper into his overarching chordal masterscape, continuing the 'Functional' theme expressed in his music in recent years. Functional Designs is first full-length LP from the producer in five years, and the teaser 'Strangers' promises more musical development than ever before heard from the enigmatic Detroit producer. It might be best describable as 'progressive dub techno'; airier and more breathable than his early, more subdued works, we're thoroughly impressed by the movement from percussive resonances ('Strangers') to fully ambient finites ('Drassanes').

Review: Shanty Town was the debut album by the legends in the making of the reggae world that are Desmond Dekker and his Aces aka Wilson James and Easton Barrington Howard. It of course induces the title track which was the first to make them stars on the international stage and even managed to hit the heady heights of #14 on the UK charts. It's an album that shows how ska from the mid-60s had an influence on the rocksteady sound and as well as the 'Spanky Town' classic you'll hear gems like 'Israelites' from 1968 and 'It Miek' from 1969.

Despite the similar name, he is not related to Desmond Dekker, and his own career took off in the late 60s with The Pioneers who achieved international success and were among the first Jamaican acts to hit the European charts. Alongside his work with the group, he released notable solo tracks like 'Foey Man' and 'Try Love' and has collaborated with producers such as Leslie Kong and Bunny Lee. His new solo album, Right To Be Here on The Blue Beat Label, features renowned producers Mafia and Fluxy and is steeped in signature sounds and timeless reggae class.

Review: If you like your reggae true to the original sound then this one is likely already long on your want list. It's a stone-cold classic from Dillinger that was one of the great DJ albums for Studio One back in the mid-1970s. It is packed with classic rhythms that were all produced with the expert guidance of Clement Dodd. Ready Natty Dreadie features non-stop highlights such as 'Pretty Looks' and 'Ten to One', the weighty low end of 'Full Up' and the magical top lines of 'Creation Rebel'. A crucial reissue.

Review: DJ Vadim's Feel Up Vol 2 was, we're told, inspired by things as different and unusual as Nassau, Covid and Grace Jones. It is an album that he lured himself into when the world shut down during Covid and has resulted in a vibrant record that mixes up dub, hip-hop and reggae. It is said to reflect the "tropical music festival" he created in his mind while in lockdown and brings pop, soul and African influences to the fore. Plenty of guests feature such as Rayjah45 & Javada, Queenie & Syross and Lasai & FABjustfa amongst many more across four sides of superb wax.

Review: Memorial Album is a superb collection of only the most essential tracks laid down by the late great Skatalites trombonist Don Drummond. It was originally released on Trojan Records in 1969 and has become a real cult favourite amongst ska heads and now gets a classy reissue on limited edition and heavyweight orange vinyl. His unique playing style is laid bare across a range of tracks that take in low slung and playful numbers to more upbeat steppers. This is a great bit of ska history and a superb testament to one of the best to ever do it.

Released in 1989, this album marked a significant moment in the evolution of Dub Syndicate and coincided with the group's emergence as a touring unit. The album blends reggae, dub and experimental sounds into a distinctive, genre-defying style. A welcome reissue.

This album gained popularity with both acid house fans and dub enthusiasts as it was a post-rave favourite for back-to-yours smoking sessions. Review: Back in the mid-to-late noughties, musical polymath Bruno Hovart (Patchworks, Voilaaa, Mr President, Uptown Funk Empire etc) helmed a revivalist dub reggae band famed for delivering dusty cover versions of soul, pop and rock hits. Hovart is a dab hand at making anything he touches sound scarily authentic, and much of Version Excursions, the band's now reissued debut album, sounds like proper Jamaican rocksteady, roots and ska of the 1970s. It's a simple idea, brilliantly executed, with highlights including their covers of 'Seven Nation Army', the Rolling Stones' 'Miss You' (reimagined as a toaster-sporting disco-reggae jam), and Led Zeppelin's 'Whole Lotta Love'.
