Instrumental Dubs 3
Granti Asher & Paulette Tajah - "Love Or Physical" (instrumental) (3:20)
Michael Prophet - "Body Fusion" (version) (3:41)
Protek - "I Love To Dance With You" (The Nightlark edit) (6:16)
The Cool-Notes - "Natural Energy" (5:07)
Ilija Rudman - "Dub 4 Love" (Secret Weapon mix) (5:59)
Review: This third volume of instrumentals continues the faultless Isle of Jura label's deep dive into dub versions and beyond. Side one takes in references from UK street soul and reggae and features two late-'80s tracks by Howard Hill with machine-led rhythms, rudeboy reggae skank and soulful pads. Protek's 'I Love to Dance With You' is a proto-house gem featured in a Jura Soundsystem mix and here it gets a loving re-edit by The Nightlark. Side B includes an instrumental-driven track with spacey FX from The Cool Notes' and Ilija Rudman's 'Dub 4 Love' which is a knowing nod to acid house's golden era.

Review: The genesis of this album was three soundsmiths getting together in Brother Sound Studio in March 2024. It's a room full of synths and instruments and mics and in there they set about their work with Martin Dread responsible for the composition. What results is a bunch of proper chunky dubs with a very modern production edge. Synths have a clean digital shine that brings a future feel, the toasting though is traditional so brings authenticity and the melodies are perfect for getting lost in after a hefty toke.

Prince Alla - "Rose Dub" (2:57)
Review: The Satta Dub crew have assembled another superb platter and pressed it up to translucent green marbled vinyl and included an insert for good measure. It's a spit that opens up with Daweh Congo's 'Holy Place' which rides on tumbling drums with scattered hits. Yearning vocals up top and natty keys are paired with sultry trumpet notes. A dub dials it all back into the low ends, then Prince Alla's 'Rose' is a work of the same rhythm, by the sounds of it, with soulful vocals and playful horns. Another dub closes out this one in heady fashion.

Review: The superb Original Gravity label is back with more OG reggae brilliance and ska classics. This second volume of Ska Fever kicks off with a big stepper from Junior Dell & The D Lites in the form of 'Rude Girl' while Prince Alphonso & The Fever bring big playful brass to 'Malostran-Ska' and Junior Dell & The D Lites then return on the flipside of this 7" with 'Remember To Forget' which picks up the pace and is built on a hardcore rhythm. The legendary Woodfield Rd Allstars shut things down with a more melancholic vibe on 'Beseda Blues.'

Review: Yi Mas Gan is back with a new and timeless roots 7" that will keep the summer vibes alive even as Autumn begins to bite. On the a-side, this one features J.A. singer Clive Hylton who was recorded by French producer Manwel T as he did his thing on 'Show Some Love.' Review: There are few better combos in reggae than Junior Dell & The D-Lites and Prince Alphonso & The Fever, and they are mainstays of the Original Gravity label. this endless treasure trove of timeless sounds turns up another fine double sider here in which Junior Dell's soulful vocals shine over The D-Lites' rich, vintage ska rhythms and rolling groove 'Just Can't Get Enough'. On the flip side, 'The Prince of Port Antonio' is a lively instrumental blending jazz-infused brass with a deep reggae swing. Both tracks nod to classic Jamaican sounds while keeping things fresh.

Review: The fruitful relationship between Town & Country and Studio 16 continues once more here with a brilliant 7" packed with real reggae royalty. This double-sided dancehall release from the legendary 70s producer Joe Gibbs features vocals from the one and only Madoo. He is in singjay style on a-side jam 'Backway Mr Landlord' with deep drums and psyched-out guitars that bring the rhythm to life in a vibrant fashion. Review: This laid-back dub 45 offers a seamless blend of positive vibes and deep rhythms. Side-1 features a classic reggae track with a powerful, uplifting message of unity. Mundell's smooth vocals are complemented by a steady, groovy rhythm that captures the essence of roots reggae. Side-2 takes the message to a more instrumental and dub-infused space, with the track being heavily dubbed out, showcasing intricate rhythms, echo effects and atmospheric layers. Enos McLeod - "Version Aka Last Of Jestering" (2:27)
Review: Augustus Pablo and Enos McLeod were something of a dub dream team back in the heyday of the gene in Jamaica. They produced plenty of great jams together, a few of which are being reissued at the moment. This one is another heavy hitter from the pair. 'Pablo Nuh Jester' pens up with some traditional drum shuffle and natty guitar work. The kicks sit perfectly in the bass while the florid bursts of harmonica are pure vibes. On the B-side, Enos McLeod steps up to rework and further dub out his own rhythmic framework and calls it 'Last Of Jestering.'

Review: Man like Augustus Pablo is revered amongst true dub heads. His ability to lay down killer riddims was second to none back in the day and this one is a classic amongst many. 'Pablo In Red' rides on a tuff rhythm from the mid-seventies that was originally produced by Enos McLeod. It has some enriching harmonics and wobbly low ends. On the flip, McLeod's 'Well Red' is a dubbed-out version with extra sonic spice making it more late night and twisted.

The track oozes laid-back, reggae-inspired vibes, with Pablo's signature melodica adding depth to the mix. On Side-2, 'Lightning Clapp' takes things up a notch, delivering a tripped-out, raw dub version of the first track. This release includes two vocal cuts: 'Love Can Be So Sweet' has swaggering drums and guitar plucks with a lo-fi edge and a raw, pained vocal. Review: Mattias Penselin aka Pensis meets Dub Me Ruff here, a German dub and reggae band made up of Danielle Mommertz, Hauke Wendler, Jan Roper, Markus Grapmeyer and Rolf Saggau. Their work is hugely authentic though and you might not necessarily know this wasn't from the 70s and a legendary suit like the Black Ar. 'King inna di Ring' and 'Burning in Flames' is fresh digital reggae that pays homage to traditional Jamaican MCs while infusing authentic new school style. The A-side showcases Perez's commanding vocals over a bass-driven groove, which is reminiscent of classic reggae clashes. 1000 Mile Drift (Adrian Sherwood mix) (5:47)
A Doubtful Sound (Adrian Sherwood 10" dub mix) (3:49)
Review: Adrian Sherwood lends a generous remixing hand to the label Dubmission and their flagship productions duo come solo artist Pitch Black (Mike Hodgson), producing an effects-laden leap through four dub drastics all based on original music first recorded by Mike. This is an exemplary case of "don't meet your heroes" being disproven, as 'Echoes Of The Night' and its filial sonic friends all worked as source material for an anything but disappointing remix bundle by Sherwood. The opening 'Transient Transmission' version is lilting enough, but the gears really get meshing on 'Third Light', which brings a turntablist's whistle, a wet yet naked guitar, and a dubstep flavour to things; finally, B-siders 'A Doubtful Sound' and '1000 Mile Drift' deconstruct things to complemetary effect, effecting dually electric Lee Perry vocals and halved trumpet importunes, the latter of which is heard set against a conspiratorial vocal sample.

Review: Caught in a Prince Buster fever, Rock-A-Shacka complement an eagerly awaited release - the third album from the legend so named, offering 12 tracks spanning Jamaican funk to rocksteady to early reggae - with a promotional 7", bolstering the full-length's legitimacy with an as-it-was 45. Here 'Funky Jamaica' and 'Clap Your Hands' coincide. The first is an early dancehall phenotype, its strong tresillo matching a heady array of audio-mancer's chants; instructive shouts from Buster himself. Then the B-side follows, a brilliant James-Browned toasting of an uptempo pre-ska progression, put together against a rhythmic cage of swift, proficient drums.

Pulled straight from the corresponding Funky Jamaica compilation issued separately - which in turn compiles the best gems to coruscate his illustrious career - the 45s format does well to counterbalance the fallacy of comprehensiveness with a throwback in form. Their 'Secret Light' is a smoky and seductive sound with wobbling low ends and impassioned vocals delivered with a heart-aching twist as the melanotic horns fly up top and rousing chords add some hope. Review: Rarely do we hear much in the way of fresh contemporary dub and/or steppers from Germany. Whilst most of our dub catalogue today consists in reissues, we're warmed by the news of this new portmanteau of tracks from Prince Istari. Istari is one of the many aliases of Felix Raeithel, best known by the name Istari Lasterfahrer. Whereas jungle, breakbeat and hardcore is the usual name of his game, it's his one-off aliases that lend a more distinctive mottling to his overall output. "Made on Earth with love", the 'Everlasting Dub' and its 'Ebb & Flow' version are nonetheless two cosmically minded dub dishings-out, replete with sunbeaten melodica and sudden spring reverbs, as per.

Review: Les Rhythmes Ruban's tunnel-visioned modus operandi is to churn out some of the toppest reggae and ambient dub on the East side of the Channel. This time they welcome twin producers Blundetto (Max Guiguet) and Pupajim (Jean-Marie Cariolet) to their roster, for the ambitious and sensorial collaborative version record Tancardub, in turn a comprehensive dubbing of their 2024 record Tancarville. Guiguet is a longtime favourite on the French dub, electro, jazz and all-else underground, having made his initial way in Dijon before cutting his teeth as the seasoner of many a vocal artist's track, including Akale Wube and Hindi Zahra. Cariolet, meanwhile, is a favourite member of the renowed dub troupe Stand High Patrol, and has been at and about it since at least 2009. Together, Tancarville was an impressive roots rollick, with 'Groenland' standing out as the vespertine vocal number; but system huggers will appreciate this version much better, since Tancardub wholly commands a crisper yet stiffer, rattlier POV on an initially serene album.

Not only a seminal record in terms of spreading the missionary message of dub, KTMRU is also a favourite of even contemporary deejays for its outsized, mature sound, one marked by eccentrically high-feedbacked, pop-eye delay effects, not to mention a driven percussion section. Now released in Canada by Clocktower Records, Canucks (and citizens of all other beneficiary nations of international postage systems) can enjoy the multi-instrumental blitz of Earl Smith, Ashton Barrett, Carlton Barrett, Robbie Shakespeare in collaboration with Tubby, the protomartyr of dub himself, on one of the quintessentially best dub reggae albums of all time.

Memories By The Score (2:41)
Review: The Dutchess label continues to establish itself in its early life with third outing that delves deep into some ageless reggae and ska sounds. It is The Paragons who are behind this one with 'Blackbirds Singing' opens up with some gorgeous vocal harmonies android back grooves topped with nice natty guitars. It's brilliantly sunny, laidback music for slowed down sessions and will sound best played through a serious system nice and loud. What music isn't, though? 'Memories By The Score' on the flip is a heavyweight sound with a fat bottom and some great spoken word vocal and backing harmonics for a nice lush sound.

Review: Lloyd Parks was born in May 1948 in Kingston, Jamaica, and went on to live a rich life in reggae that made him an icon of the genre, in particular, known for his soulful melodies and fantastic bass playing skills. He began his career in the late 1960s with the Invincibles band before later forming The Termites with Wentworth Vernal. As a solo artist, Parks achieved success with his 1973 hit 'Officially' which also became the title of this sought-after album. He worked with artists like Justin Hinds, Dennis Brown and The Abyssinians and later founded the We The People Band. This reissue brings 'Officially' back into the spotlight where it belongs.

Review: Hey, Mr. Music! The expertly rediscovered North West London soul singer Candy McKenzie (sister of Bunny McKenzie) hears her Trojan Records debut, and only album, reissued through MOV. "Upset" by Lee Perry of all people - the late great dub producer titularly "introduces" McKenzie as person of interest here - this sole LP from McKenzie, first unearthed in 2011 but recorded unmistakably in the 80s - betrays a nonconformist character, crossing blurrily between percussive lovers rock and bubbly new wave. McKenzie's vocal style is aplomb and vigorous, and is well contrasted to the otherwise soothing laryngeals of Perry's many other femme familiars, such as Susan Cadogan.

Originally released in 1984 on Island/Mango, this album History Mystery Prophesy gets a welcome reissue and features an array of his most weed-worshipping songs. Review: Back in 2010 before his sad passing, the great Lee "Scratch" Perry dropped Revelation, an album made at his second studio in Switzerland, which is where he lived after spending most of his life working from his legendary Black Ark Studio in Jamaica. For this one, he collaborated with Keith Richards and George Clinton to complete what was a three-part series made with English musician and producer Steve Marshall aka John Saxon. It was accompanied day a full-length film offering behind-the-scenes access to the making of the album, which now gets reissued on limited and numbered gatefold 180-gram audiophile translucent yellow vinyl. A real modern classic.

Review: This double-disc collection offers a fascinating glimpse into Lee Perry's evolution as a producer during a pivotal year in reggae music. 1970 saw Perry at the top of his game, fresh off the success of Return Of Django, and these recordings capture his adventurous spirit and groundbreaking studio techniques. The compilation features a wealth of instrumental works, showcasing the proto-dub experiments of his backing band, The Hippy Boys. With 14 tracks new to CD and many others unavailable since the 1990s, this release is a treasure trove for dedicated Upsetter fans. From the infectious grooves of 'Yakety Yak' to the dubwise explorations of 'Bush Tea' and the soulful sounds of 'Let It Be', this collection is a must-have for any reggae enthusiast.

Review: The first extensive anthology of Lee Perry's early productions includes numerous Jamaican hits and features some of the most influential recordings of the late 60s. Today, Lee 'Scratch' Perry is widely recognied as one of the finest talents from the golden age of Jamaican music. However, his rise to fame was neither easy nor swift. After working for Studio One boss Clement 'Coxson' Dodd, Perry made his mark as an artist and arranger in the mid-60s, eventually becoming a fully independent producer by mid-1968. Perry's innovative approach and understanding of local music trends quickly brought him national success with popular singles on Upset, the label he co-owned. He soon became an independent operator, releasing best-selling 45s on his Upsetter label, which attracted the attention of London-based Trojan Records. Trojan created a British version of his imprint in early 1969. Perry's music particularly resonated with Britain's skinhead fans, and in autumn 1969, his production of Val Bennett and The Upsetters' Return Of Django reached the UK pop charts, exposing Perry's music to a global audience. This anthology brings together the recordings that launched Perry's career as an independent producer, showcasing a mix of soulful rock steady and dynamic boss reggae. It offers a compelling listening experience and a fascinating insight into the early musical development of one of Jamaican music's most influential and innovative figures.

Review: On its latest deep dive into the Jamaican reggae archives, the Doctor Bird label has returned to the early years of one of the style's most iconic producers, Lee 'Scratch' Perry. The music showcased on this two-disc set was initially released on Perry's own Upsetter imprint in 1969-70 and contains a mix of vocal numbers, instrumental 'versions' and alternate takes from the archive. There's naturally tons of highlights amongst the 50-plus tracks on show, including the organ-rich ska flex of The Upsetters' 'Night Doctor', the soulful rocksteady sweetness of 'Kiddy-O' by the Silvertones, the slow-dance excellence of Busty Brown's 'I Can't See Myself Cry About You', the low-slung shuffle of The Upsetters' 'Bab Thool' and the bona fide anthem that is 'Django Shoots Again' by Val Bennett and the Upsetters.

Review: Japanese music outlet Rock A Shacka reissues a compelling 2020 compilation, Play On Music: Lee Perry Black Ark Days, which captures the Upsetter for the best part of his key tenancy at the Black Ark Studio in Jamaica, which he built himself and which lasted from 1973 to 1979. Having died a legendarily bizarre death - during a manic episode amid an alleged fiscal entanglement involving being blackmailed for studio profits, Perry was alleged to have covered every available surface in black marker pen before burning the entire complex to the ground - the Black Ark Studio was martyred as not just a hitmaker but also a known out-turner of many an uncommon dub gem. Featuring such greats as 'Play On Mr. Music', 'Milte Hi Ankhen' and 'Bird In Hand', this comp also features brilliant rarities like 'Rejoice Jah Jah Children' by the Silvertones, as well as an unreleased take of Carlton Jackson's biggest tune 'History'.

Review: The world will never not miss the one and only Lee "Scratch" Perry. His influence on dub will never be matched, his back catalogue will forever turn up some treasure or other you haven't heard. And now we can add to that this, a tribute album from his son Omar. Perry Jr is an accomplished performer in his own right and he shows that on Channeling Lee Scratch Perry, which features Olivier Gangloff who produced Perry Snr's final studio album. It's a blend of the fat, pillowy low ends Perry was so well known for with conscious lyrics, upbeat drums and plenty of whimsical and alluring melodies.

This is their debut outing and it's a fresh blend of original jungle infused with inspiration from a wide world of sounds. There are tropical but physical sounds like 'Diplomatico Dub' packed with smart effects, minimal head spiders like the sci-fi styled '$nkt Erik Jamboree' and experimental vignettes such as 'Olearie$ Dub' with well-worked vocals and snaking basslines. It's colourful, unusual, and perfect for late-night sessions.

Review: Initially released back in 2007 and now repressed for new audiences as well as enduring fans, Pitch Black's fourth album was possibly their best yet. Rude Mechanicals blends dance music and electronica with their signature mix of echoes, delays and deep basslines to brilliantly alluring effect. Kicking off with the lush 'South of the Line,' it progresses into tracks like the dub-heavy '1000 Mile Drift' and the high-energy 'Sonic Colonic.' 'Bird Soul' nods to Salmonella Dub's influence while 'Harmonia' delivers exquisite electronica. The title track features rapper KP addressing environmental destruction and things close with 'Please Leave Quietly'. Complex rhythms, warm bass and haunting melodies with sharp social commentary all make this a genre-busting bit of work.

Review: London's Prince Fatty is a determined dub solo artist ready to take on the world and his mission is more than well reiterated on his latest expansion in the US realm of Seattle. Dub Battle For Seattle brings a further eight dub dramatics to the fold; the tracks were conceived many moons ago on the south coast of England, and in response to Little Roy's eponymous 2021 album of the same name, which took after the 1999 anti-World Trade Organization protests in Seattle, whilst also making for eight dub reggae cover versions of Nirvana's greatest hits. Little Roy's originals are well deglazed as Nirvanic versions by Fatty, whose bulbous productions serve to enliven and trip them out.

Review: Nope, sadly it is not that Prince Philip - the late Queen's husband - though boy would we love to hear what he could do on a mixing desk with those porcine fingers of his. Instead, this is a collection of sounds dedicated to the work of the late "Prince" Philip Smart, who was the first-ever engineer at King Tabby's legendary Tubby studio beside the boss himself. He was key to sharing the early sound of dub though he was rarely credited at the time. Listen to this collection of gems from between 1973 and 1976 across to glorious slabs of wax though and you'll be sure to be a fan.
