Alt! (5:55)
Nowhere To Nowhere (6:10)
Hapi (4:33)
Pacific State (4:30)
Review: Psychederek's latest EP, ALT!, takes listeners on a romp through psychedelic realms, blending electronic and rock influences into hypnotic rave soundscapes. The title track, 'ALT!,' honours Krautrock with soaring vocals atop layers of guitars, synths, and solid drumbeats. A real classy track that bridges into new wave in some respects. 'Nowhere To Nowhere' charms with its psychedelic reel, drawing listeners in with stacked instrumentation and catchy vocal breakdown. 'Hapi' offers a blissful retreat with its stripped-back arrangement, featuring soaring synths and reverb-drenched vocals that evoke the Balearic sounds of the 70s. Closing the EP is a cover of 808 State's classic 'Pacific State', reimagined with a psychedelic twist. Psychederek's rendition breathes new life into the Manchester anthem, with layers of synths, guitars, and swoosh-filled effects, anchored by the sublime drumming of Donald Johnson from A Certain Ratio. Overall, ALT! shows Psychederek's talent for creating immersive sonic landscapes that blur the lines between genres, inviting listeners on a cosmic trip through sound and space.

Review: Amorphous Androgynous are back with something suitably epic in the form of this symphonic, 40-minute prog space-rock concept album, We Persuade Ourselves We Are Immortal. It is presented as five fantastic parts with the legendary Peter Hammill and Paul Weller both guesting, while the Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir and a 25-piece live orchestral string section provide the sumptuous sound that makes this most expansive and borderless record sound so meaningful. A cosmic trip of gigantic proportions with all the ups and downs you need to really feel moved, this is the definition of prog lavishness.

Review: In 2022, modern-day Estonian jazz superstar Misha Panfilov dropped 'Momentum', one of six albums by the composer, multi-instrumentalist and producer to be released. Themed after the gothic image of Panfilov and his band playing in an abandoned mois (manor), this is a twilit spiritual jazz opus, backed by a troupe of percussionists (Leonid Galaganov, Madis Katkosilt, etc.) eager to accompany Panfilov's instrumental avarice; the master musician plays a grand total of twelve instruments on this dubious dream of an album, including, besides your typical jazz band inclusions, a waterphone and a Mellotron.

Review: Penza Penza, led by Misha Panfilov, is back with a fourth LP, Alto E Primitivo, which was recorded at private events in Funchal, Portugal, and Tallinn, Estonia. The album underscores Panfilov's genre-blending prowess on Detroit's Funk Night Records across 14 tracks that blend deep grooves, intricate guitars, and soulful rhythms from psychedelia to garage rock. The dynamic tracks showcase the groups' newly matured sound with refined production that will find favour with fans of Khruangbin and The Budos Band. Tracks like 'Wacky,' 'Pterodactyl,' and 'Boo Hoo Boogaloo' highlight their instrumental prowess while occasional distorted vocals add texture. Alto E Primitivo then is another gem from Penza Penza.

Review: Whether you opt to use the abbreviation - Pigsx7 - or say the band name in full, one thing is certainly abundantly clear about the swine-inspired sludge-rockers from Newcastle, UK. They make very loud and very powerful 'proper' rock music, make no apologies about it, and have been pretty damn consistent since they first squealed onto the scene with riffs blazing. 'Viscerals' does not break from that remit. Having managed to simultaneously win over die hard heavy metal types and BBC 6 Music listeners alike, they deliver this as their latest offering to the music hungry populace, and it's pretty much business as usual. Exceptional guitar innovation, propulsive rhythms and commanding atmospheres, with the only real change being the track lengths - with these arguably their most succinct to date, but as overwhelming as anything that has come before.

Review: Eddie Piller's first volume of British Mod Sounds of The 1960s went down a real storm so it's great that he has been commissioned to do another one. This second edition is another doozy with the Acid Jazz Records and Modcast founder digging deep and turning out plenty of knowledge. Early on, British Mod bands were prone to knocking out American r&b sounds but they later evolved and took in influences from jazz-rock, prog, psychedelic soul and eastern melodies. This collection charts that musical evolution across four sides of vinyl including tunes by the OGs well as plenty of newly emerging stars from Bowie to Bolan.

Review: Eddie Piller Presents The Mod Top 100 is a fulfilling four-CD set that revisits the golden era of 1960s mod culture through a meticulously curated selection of tracks. This collection, inspired by the original Mod Top 100 compiled by Randy Cozens, offers a rich mix of r&b, soul, jazz and beat music that was integral to the iconic dancefloors of London's West End. Piller has expanded upon Cozens' influential list, including additional personal favorites from the era. The result is a vibrant homage to the Mod movement, featuring soulful voices from Doris Troy, Betty Everett, and Bessie Banks, alongside classics from James Brown, Ike and Tina Turner, and Solomon Burke. Instrumental gems from Hank Jacobs and the Ramsey Lewis Trio further enhance this comprehensive set. The release not only showcases the era's diverse sound but also serves as a tribute to Randy Cozens, whose passion and dedication helped shape the Mod scene. With new sleeve notes by Piller and support from Cozens' family, this collection is a fitting celebration of a pivotal musical and cultural moment.

All of the 16 tracks here are previously unreleased demo versions that offer a real insight into how the final album came together. The works in progress versions are just as interesting and the whole thing comes with some new notes from Jon Savage. Whether it's the rawness of 'I'm Comin' Down' (Isle Of Dogs Home Studio) or the intensity of 'Movin' On Up' (Hackney Studio demo), fans will be keen to hear this one.

Review: Morning Star marks The Prisoners' triumphant return after nearly four decades, showcasing their timeless blend of garage-punk, soulful vocals, and electrifying Hammond organ. Recorded in just two days, the album captures the raw energy and chemistry of the original lineup, reminiscent of their seminal debut, A Taste of Pink.
Their gig at The Roundhouse in London on May 24th promises to be a celebration of their storied career and the release of this long-awaited album. The band's influence on subsequent generations of musicians is evident, with their sound serving as a blueprint for Brit-Pop and beyond. While James Taylor's Hammond prowess gained widespread recognition post-Prisoners, Graham Day and Allan Crockford's musical journey continued through various projects, each echoing the spirit of their groundbreaking band. Morning Star stands to honor The Prisoners' enduring legacy and reaffirms their status as pioneers of the DIY music movement. It's a reminder that some things truly are worth the wait.

Review: Now in their second decade as a band, it seems almost unthinkable that anyone should not have long-since fallen head over heels for Detroit's Protomartyr. The post-punk set stormed out of the starting blocks amid a niche but very notable resurgence in the sound, but years later have managed to continue staying relatively true to their remit, swerving any and every opportunity to reinvent in the hope of finding a spot on the next bandwagon, while still managing to avoid falling into repetitive pitfalls. Ever imaginative, in many ways Formal Growth In the Desert is their most uncompromising ode to the style we associate them with, and certainly reflects how close they can come to starting a full blow riot in your front room. Nevertheless, it's also packed full of tender moments, not least on closer 'The Author', an ode to iconic singer Joe Casey's late mother. A powerhouse band returning with a powerhouse record, even in its softest seconds.

Review: For the third album from these loveably cheeky additions to the Perth scene that gave us Tame Impala and King Gizzard, mainman Jack McEwan has turned back to the sounds of the 70s and re-routed them back through the band's trademark spaced out, stoner rock. The likes of 'Glitter Bug' and 'Hats Off To The Green Bins', then, are like hearing the excesses of early Queen or Gabriel-era Genesis being adopted and corrupted by a biker gang with questionable concern for their own cerebral protection. It's still widescreen and adorably catchy, just with more twists and turns than before and - possibly thanks to lockdown - impossibly packed with sonic detail. For a while, ardent followers of the band have been waiting for them to match the intensity of their widely lauded live show. Here, it feels like they do it and some, surpassing it even.

Review: Established in 2012, Marathon Artists has supported and released the music of Jagwar Ma, Real Lies and Courtney Barnett. Western Australian ironies the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets join the peloton with a third album following two linked LPs in 2016 and 2017. This album, "And Now For The Whatchamacallit", splashes on to record a streaming desert sky lit with streamlined guitar riffs draped in reverb and strafed by retro-active vocoders from the future. Like the cover art presents, it's a wild trip through a colourful and mystical land that almost paints a soundtrack for their very own planet sauvage. Fresh and contemporary psychedelica rising from the ashes of bands like Wolfmother and Kasabian. Highlights: "When In Rome" and "Digital Hunger".

Review: Whatever you think of their original productions, there's no denying the continued quality of Psychemagik's compilations. Their latest epic exploration of member Danny McLewin's epic record collection, Ritual Music, is split into three parts. This volume, Love, predictably includes some genuine thrillers, from the new age electronica of Man Parrish's "Water Sports", and the global mysticism of "Amram" by The Rias Orchestra, to the breathy sleaze of Jeanette's "L'Amour Jove Au Viol", and seductive guitar solos of Bobby Lyle's jazz-funk classic "Makin' Love". We could go on. Suffice to say, there's barely a duffer in sight, and more intriguing twists and turns than your average sci-fi murder mystery.

Review: Saint Etienne's Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs have more than proven their music knowledge across a stellar run of prior compilations, including The Daisy Age, Fell From The Sun and English Weather. This time around, they're tapping into the freeform climes of the late 70s and early 80s, as punk exploded and a myriad of bands channelled the unique, downcast mood of Britain into wildly creative, nervously urgent songs. Across four sides we take in all manner of cult selections and outer limits largely in the loose fit realm of post-punk. It's flawlessly selected and programmed - another reminder of how immersive a proper compilation can be.
