The Unreleased Funky Instrumentals Vol 2
Cat: DAVID 002. Rel: 05 May 25
Sound & Vision (unreleased instrumental 45 edit)
Young Americans (unreleased instrumental 45 edit)
Review: This newly formed and already brilliant label is back with more previously unreleased instrumentals that bring a different twist and dancefloor edge to classic sounds from the rock and indie world. First up we get a subtle edit of 'Sound and Vision' which has a nice fat and funky bassline bouncing beneath the splashy drums as nice acoustic guitar melodies ring out next to glistening retro-future pads. It's a cosmic trip that oozes soul then things slow down on the flip with 'Young Americans'. This one is a nice go-slow instrumental with funky and expressive horn work taking the lead over the fat-bottomed drums and bass.

Golden Years (instrumental - previously unreleased 45 edit) (4:02)
Fame (instrumental - previously unreleased 45 edit) (4:03)
Review: Bowie is a new label that says it intends to "dig deep into the unreleased sides of pop superstars material from the past." The opening gambit is a strong one that should hook you in for more as it comes in the form of a 7" with two fine funk instrumentals, neither of which have been put out before. 'Golden Years' has lovely live drums and meandering guitar licks for some carefree listening, while 'Fame' has a deep cut groove that rises and falls in dramatic fashion with more neat and tidy riffs adding the detail next to the big licks.

Review: Very little information was provided to 20 Buck Spin regarding Dead In The Manger when the label was initially contacted about a release - only that the band plays a mix of depressive black metal and grind (which seemed on paper an impossible combination), and that their intention is to instill feelings of unease and despondency in the listener. Nonetheless, a cursory listen to "Transience" leaves no doubt that on their debut mini-LP Dead In The Manger creates music both brutally violent and coldly agonizing.

"Transience" opens with a repetitive, atmospheric motif, conjuring a bleak sadness that sets the stage for an urgent right turn to scalpel-sharp, high-BPM aggression and multiple stab wounds of hate-driven malcontent. Filled with ill-will and revulsion, Dead In The Manger walks a fine line between all-out sensory violence and post-trauma exhaustion.

At just six songs in under 20 minutes, "Transience" destroys the listener with a calculated premeditation, and is a first glimpse at what Dead In The Manger have in store. A debut full-length album is in the works currently and will see a release via 20 Buck Spin later in 2014.

Uncommon Man (live In Milan 2022)
Review: Legendary reformed British hard rockers Deep Purple have released 'Pictures Of You,' the second single from their upcoming album =1. Frontman Ian Gillan delivers enigmatic lyrics that critique modern technology and the use of computers and the track, featuring an atmospheric keyboard solo by Don Airey, is classic Deep Purple, showcasing their timeless ability to produce fantastic music. Following the success of their last single 'Portable Door,' this release proves the band's enduring prowess in the rock scene. Available here on CD single, the band is more potent now than ever 50 years on since they formed.

Review: Deep Purple have been rocking long enough to have written a song in response to the infamous Montreux Casino fire, which nearly killed Frank Zappa, forever changing his vocal range, in 1971. By the time that smash hit single came out - complete with arguably rock & roll's most iconic riff - the band were already on their sixth studio album. Skip forward 51 years after the track came out, alongside the Machine Head album, and we're still writing about Ian Gillan, Roger Glove, Ian Paice, Don Airey and Simon McBride. In a lot of ways, our thoughts are still the same. That blues psychedelia at work here, and the work still sets a benchmark for heavy rock and proto-metal. Of course, both canons have evolved and developed since their inception - which Deep Purple had a big hand in - but when you're faced with the pioneers and their new single, they rarely sound this complete.

Just Like 73 (3:45)
Just Like 73 (alternative version) (3:30)
Review: Sheffield rock royalty Def Leppard build momentous hype for their upcoming tour alongside Journey with the release of their brand new single 'Just Like 73'. Written in collaboration with Rage Against The Machine axeman Tom Morello, the banger comes complete with an absurd music video of computer generated de-aged models of the band and a parachuting Morello making their way to Earl's Court to perform for a massive crowd of adoring fans. Elaborating on the experience, the guitar guru stated - "I had a blast rocking a solo on 'Just Like 73.' I played 'Rock of Ages' in my college cover band almost 40 years ago and here Def Leppard are still killing it in stadiums with a brand-new tune that's one of their best." Pressed on limited 7" wax with an alternative version on the flip, the Leppard evidently still have plenty of sugar in the petrol tank.

Little Things Die Fast
Review: Diastole, from Bury St Edmunds, play rock like a less frenzied but more metal Be Your Own Pet, the tribal percussive thump of 'Little Things Die Fast' a thrilling insight to their eloquent, dark manner. 'Small Measures' place them further into an early 90s, post Riot Grrl, alt rock mode, Ellie Langley intoning like a teenage Polly Harvey. There is a blackness, an earthiness and some expressive songwriting from this impressive young rock band.

Review: Djar One is at it again, whipping up some deep and dusty funk mysteries from the past and laying them down on Beats House. The big beat 60s sound comes through heavy on "Soul Kitchen", what with all those handclaps and groovy organ chops, and there's no let up on the B side as "The Changeling" puts the break front and centre. There's no question - these cuts will do the damage in the dance, not least in the context of a vintage funk get down. Whether it's fussy heads or easy going party people you're playing for, you can't go wrong slapping this deadly 7" down on the platter.

Review: If you're stuck for a Valentine's day gift for the vinyl lover in your life, you might want to take a look at this limited, heart-shaped pressing of Donnie and Joe Emerson's cult 1979 cut "Baby", which has successfully been covered in recent years by Dean Blunt and Inga Copeland, and more surprisingly Ariel Pink and Damn Funk. Here it resides on the A-side, where the lovelorn brothers cut a heavy-hearted path through lo-fi blue-eyed soul pastures. B-side "Tonight" is a previously unreleased gem recorded during the same period. It, too, is emotion-rich and lo-fi in construction, with the pair adding their sublime vocals to a backing track rich in steel guitar solos, chunky bass and flanged guitar chords.

Review: Legendary guitarist Earl Slick is well known for his long-standing partnership with David Bowie and now he releases a remixed version of a track featuring Bowie on vocals. It comes on 7" coloured vinyl and celebrates a collaboration that produced plenty of iconic rock music that was well detailed in Slick's recent autobiography Guitar. In it, he recalls how Bowie spontaneously offered to sing on the track and that led to an unforgettable recording session. The remixed version honours their creative chemistry and brings Bowie's voice back to the forefront.

Morrissey - "That's Entertainment" (3:19)
Review: A live curio from the brief time that Bowie and Morrissey toured together that sees the two legends joining forces for a cover of T-Rex's 'Cosmic Dancer'. It's a fairly sparse arrangement, mainly dominated in musical terms by Boz Boorer's jangling acoustic tones, but obviously that does leave plenty of room for two of the most recognisable voices in the business to work their magic. A slick studio take of the Moz tackling The Jam's 'That's Entertainment' inhabits the flip side of what is surely a 7" to get diehards fans salivating.

Review: In October 1977, Australian rock titans AC/DC were set to enjoy a night off in London following two successful shows at the Hammersmith Odeon, before they were tapped by The BBC at the last minute to replace The Sensational Alex Harvey Band who had cancelled their scheduled appearance on the Sight & Sound In Concert show at the Hippodrome in North London's Golders Green. While the likes of Queen, Jethro Tull, The Kinks and Roxy Music would perform at the 3,000-capacity venue over the years, no band or set has ever rocked the Hippodrome like Bon Scott and the boys did on this fateful evening. Ripping through a truncated, all bangers setlist of seven tracks in just 40 minutes, including 'Problem Child', 'Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be', 'Whole Lotta Rosie' and 'T.N.T.', while Angus Young would run rampant whilst shredding through the balcony section, this performance has gone down as one of most iconic from this early definitive era of the band.

Review: Don't be confused by that title - this live album is a recording of their Monsters of Rock appearance from 1991, a bill on which even legends like Metallica and Motley Crue found themselves playing supporting roles to the Australian gods. That said, despite this being very much the domain of singer number two, Mr Brian Johnson, there are many, many moments from the Bon Scott songbook here, from album title tracks 'Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap', 'High Voltage' and 'Let Me Rock' alongside later triumphs like 'Hells Bells' and 'Heatseeeker'. The only thing that might seem odd by its omission is 'Highway To Hell' - the clue is NOT in the name, it seems - but across four sides of vinyl, there's still plenty of AC/DC at in truly electrifying mood here.

Review: Six years is ages for a band to go without releasing an album or doing very much. But for AC/DC, whose work rate has always been ridiculously high, it's a very, very long time. Between then and now, the band lost their lead singer, Brian Johnson, to hearing difficulties in the middle of their last tour, and saw drummer Paul Rudd arrested in New Zealand for 'attempting to procure a murder'. Talk about impetus to finally call time.

But then these are the guys responsible for one of history's greatest heavy rock triumphs, 1980s's Back In Black, released just months after formative frontman Bon Scott tragically passed. So it's no surprise Power Up, another post-traumatic release albeit an act of reunification with now (relatively) healthy Johnson and innocent Rudd returning, is among their best in the 40 years since. A comeback record that sounds exactly like AC/DC should - ballsy, bluesy, boozy riffs.

Review: The Mighty AC/DC will always invoke images of monstrous stadia packed with tens if not hundreds of thousands of heads stomping about to power riffs, tight bass and highs. But these masters of heavy, boozy, gutsy, bloodied rock 'n' roll didn't start out on those main stages, and earned their crust doing the pub circuits during the mid-1970s. The point being, they also know their way around intimate spots, and even when supersized that masterful rapport, and the feeling the outfit are playing at you specifically, still radiates. 80s Radio Broadcasts, which comprises tracks recorded live on a major tour, is a case in point. Yes, it's loud, perhaps some of the loudest concert recordings these guys have ever done, but there's a raucousness to the cacophonies that's more wild barroom than Wembley.

Review: The year 1977 might be remembered for being the moment punk went overground, but it was also the time that AC/DC turned into global rock superstars in the wake of the arrival of their classic Let There Be Rock album. This limited release takes a selection of tracks from the longer original recording in front of a rabid sounding audience at San Francisco's Old Waldorf in September 77, capturing the Australians in about as top form as you'll ever hear, from Malcom Young wall-of-sound riffing and Phil Rudd's nailed-to-the-floor drumming and Bon Scott's disitinctive wail. Alongside the wel worn classics like 'Problem Child' and 'Bad Boy Boogie' there are a handful of lesser known tracks in the process of being roadtested and you don't often see in their set lists, There's even a run through rock 'n' roll standard 'Plese Don't Go'.

Captured during their expansive run in promotion of their fourth Scott era LP Let There Be Rock, the set boasts some of the record's most timeless and bombastic cuts, from the iconic title track to the banging 'Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be' to the quintessential 'Whole Lotta Rosie', but there's still enough energy to pump out the frenetic closer 'TNT' in all of its original, raw abandon.

Review: Let There Be Rock, AC/DC's powerhouse fourth album, embodies the raw, unbridled energy that defines rock and roll. From the raw, almost Albini-like production of opener 'Go Down' onwards, the relentless drive of the title track to the riotous closing of 'Whole Lotta Rosie,' the album exudes a 'do it live' ethos. Bon Scott's raucous vocals and the band's frenetic guitars and driving rhythms push the limits of their musical abilities, resulting in a sound that's both unapologetically aggressive and irresistibly engaging. With its electrifying execution and high-octane performances, this album not only captures the essence of AC/DC but also makes a compelling case for their influence on the punk movement, landing as it did in 1977.

Review: With four albums dropping throughout the first half the 1980s, the second iteration of AC/DC with Brian Johnson on vocals was definitely on a roll. This recording of the band in action on the West Coast of the US mixes classics from their Back In Black classic like 'You Shook Me All Night Long' and 'Hell's Bells' - with older favourites. There are fan faves galore here but also a few tracks which make the cut less often, such as 'Shot Down In Flames' from the Highway To Hell album, 'She's Got Balls', 'Shoot To Thrill' and more. That alone sets it above the average live broadcast album from the band, elevating it into the realms of the essential for hardcore devotees.

Review: Recorded in the Netherlands as the band supported the penultimate studio outing of the Bon Scott years, Powerage. Of the ten tracks here, three are from that oft overlooked album and they're tracks that are a little rarer than the usual when it comes to the average AC/DC broadcast album. In particular, a rendition of 'Gone Shootin' that's been a little beefed up from the more reflective - yes, they did do reflective on occasion - studio version, is worthy of note, alongside versions of 'Rock 'N' Roll Damnation' and 'Sin City'. The more familiar fan faves from a spread of previous albums - see 'Rocker', 'Whole Lotta Rosie', 'Live Wire', 'High Voltage' - are here too, naturally enough. But, as with every live recording of the Aussies in action, there are priceless chunks of never-repeated improvisation (especially Angus Young's drama-driving between-song guitar riffing) that no real fan will want to miss.

Celebrating half a century of rock legacy, AC/DC's Back In Black gets a special edition release some 44 years after its original unleashing. The iconic album is well known for its thunderous riffs and anthemic choruses and though it is very much of its age, it solidified AC/DC's status as one of rock's greatest bands, despite the appearance of flat capped Geordie Brian Johnston in place of Bon Scott, who died tragically in 1980. With hits like 'You Shook Me All Night Long', live favourites 'Hells Bells' and 'Rock 'N' Roll Ain't Noise Pollution' and the title track, the album reached all-new heights of rock energy and big riffery and now this anniversary edition offers a fresh perspective on a timeless classic while showcasing AC/DC's enduring influence on the rock landscape.

Along with staple live favourites that have remained in the band's set for yonks - see 'Rocker', 'Bad Boy Boogie', 'Problem Child' and 'The Jack' - there are rare outings for the groovy but more subdued, bluesy 'Gone' Shootin' and, the final encore here, 'Dog Eat Dog' from 76's massive Let There Be Rock album. You can almost hear the collectors' salivating.

There is only contender in the park when it comes to the best live album of all time and that's AC/DC's 1978 classic, recorded at the Glasgow Apollo and featuring their original vocalist Bon Scott. From the deft riffing of opener 'Riff Raff' - recently covered by men of the moment Black Midi - to the 12 bar frenzy of traditional closer 'Rocker' via big hitting groovers like 'Bad Boy Boogie' and 'Problem Child' and audience participation-fests like 'The Jack' and 'Whole Lotta Rosie', this is dripping in crowd atmospherics, improvised solos and big walls of riffs. Just about as great an advert for live music as ever existed.

Review: Are AC/DC the greatest living rock & roll band? Is Angus Young the world's finest lead guitarist? Personal opinions aside, the motoring, riff-heavy, blues-infused legends certainly rank among the most successful and inimitable bands on the circuit, even if time is against them these days, with co-founding brother Malcolm Young now playing rhythm guitar in the sky and frontman Brian Johnson struggling with his own health. Nevertheless, the guys keep on keeping on, a determination bordering on an art form in itself which this lot are particularly adept at, having lost their beloved first lead singer, Bon Scott, back in 1980, only to recover with one of the best selling records of all time, Back In Black. Live At The Old Waldorf offers a snapshot of the period in which Scott was emerging as one of rock's finest, wittiest and cleverest songwriters, while the band itself had youth on their side. A priceless relic from a precious time.

Review: If you want blood... well, we all know what comes next. AC/DC are among the most marmite of stadium-sized rock bands, their consistency over the past six decades seen by some as relentless homogeneity. In reality, it's an auteur signature. We know, within three chords of school uniform-clad Angus Young's iconic Gibson, whose song, it is yet to the trained ear there are huge differentiations at play. From drawly blues through to seismic main stage energy. Highway To Hell is one of the group's seminal early outings, and any self-respecting fan should own it already. Although perhaps not in this stunning gold edition, released to celebrate the LP's 50th anniversary. Newcomers can expect an insight into the barrooms filled with sweat and spilt drinks from which this mega group came out of and a clue as to why Bon Scott, the lead singer who tragically died as they really hit fifth gear, will always have a place in our hearts.

Review: Following up the worldwide smash Back In Black was going to be a tough job for anyone, but AC/DC brought the big guns in - more specifically, the big gun on its cover, which we also get to hear in full explosive effect on the album's title track, the kind of epic most bands save for their closer but here designated the opening tune. While it's fair to say not as many of the tracks here made it into AC/DC classic territory as on its predecessor, the sound of the now Brian Johnson-fronted team in full power mode dishing out groovers like 'Let's Get It Up' and 'C.O.D' is pretty irresistible, while 'Breaking The Rules' marks new ground for them - a slow motion, headnodding anthem with the band's long running anti-authoritarian stance writ large upon it.

It's 1977 and AC/DC are not-so-fresh after a spell as the support on Black Sabbath's tour. Looking for a new bassist, after a disagreement over whether to pick Manfred Mann's Colin Pattenden, the band agree on Cliff Williams, who would remain in place until 2003. Recording what became Powerage, their fifth studio album, Atlantic Records soon complained there wasn't a sellable lead single. 'Rock 'n' Roll Damnation' took form, one of the group's outliers, which comes without standard guitar solo but with maracas and hand claps. While this proved divisive among die hard fans, the album itself has gold waiting to be discovered deeper down. 'Gimme A Bullet', for example, has been cited as the finest track the late Bon Scott would write, his lyrical flair and deft metaphorical wit shining through on a tune that won't let up. This was his final LP, and tragically three years later he was no longer with us, marking an end to the group's iconic first chapter.

From the title track, with its sleazy tale of cash for violence, to the Stones-esque 'Problem Child' and the frenetic 12-bar closer 'Rocker', the band's closing song in their live set for many years to come, this is the sound of a legend being forged.

Review: It's not so well known that Steely Dan had a precursor band, but here we come to enlighten you. The group was originally formed by two core members, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, whose collaborations as a pair preceded Steely Dan's supergroup work. Long before they embarked on a lofty rock career, they were soundtracking obscure comedies. Peter Locke's 'You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It Or You'll Lose That Beat' was their first and only victim - the comedy-drama dealt with the life of a young hippie coming of age in Central Park. The music, to boot, is an eight-track selection of rip-roaring blues and pedal basses, as Fagen and Becker meditate on the carnal nature of the world, through masterful guitar playing and impactful rhythms.

Review: Here comes Dahga Bloom's new record "No Curtains": psychotic sonics from the other side of the Orange County tracks. This psychedelic quintet aims straight for the head with undulating rhythms at full throttle.

The term psychedelic is being thrown around a lot these days. Sometimes this label is applied to long-form blues jams that mellow out into some stoner epiphany. Dahga Bloom's brand of "psych" blasts straight into the stratosphere from the word go, bypassing all the KB haze and good vibes. On the album opener "Supa" the BPM's are high as the Bloom turbocharge their capsule into the center of the sun, dodging space trash along the way. The frenetic pace and Lucas Drake's scratchy, driving vocals might make you reconsider the wisdom of this journey. However, by the time your reach the album's first single, "Space is the Place", the anxiety has dissipated. Euphoria and enormous beats hold sway.

The OC Weekly recently voted Dahga Bloom the best live band of 2013, stating that "the frenzy they conjure around them - akin to that of snake charmers in a pit of vipers - makes every set truly memorable. Paying their dues for years in OC has earned them the kind of respect and trust that ultimately convinces you to lose your bullshit too-cool pose for the duration of the performance, strip off an article of clothing, and do exactly as they say.".

What started out as Taylor Reid's popular book loosely based on Fleetwood Mac has gathered enough steam that the fictional band now have an album out, rendered in the real world by producer Blake Mills and featuring contributions from the likes of Marcus Mumford, Madison Cunningham and Jackson Browne. The sound is absolutely pitched at late 70s Fleetwood Mac - a universally adored sound which will no doubt find the band enjoying heaps of success, whether they actually exist or not.
