Lovin' You (Lovers Reggae mix)
Empire State Of Mind (part 2)
Review: Japanese singer-songwriter Calyn Tsukishima offers a fresh take on two iconic tracks with her reggae covers. Her rendition of Minnie Riperton's 'Lovin' You' is a smooth, emotional journey, with Tsukishima's glossy vocals building in intensity, pulling the listener into a warm embrace of lovers' reggae. This cover offers a unique yet faithful reimagining of a classic, with the gradual swell in her singing perfectly complementing the track's inherent tenderness. On the B-side, Tsukishima takes on Alicia Keys' 'Empire State of Mind (Pt. 2)' in a ska reggae style, the upbeat rhythm and catchy horns injecting a lively, fresh energy into a song often tied to urban grandeur. A must-have for reggae enthusiasts and those eager to hear beloved songs through a different lens.

Hatoba (instrumental)
Review: With over two decades of experience and more than 20 EPs to their name, this seasoned Japanese producer once again captures a distinct, sunset-soaked atmosphere on their latest release, Hatoba. Blending reggae, dub and chill-out with a uniquely Japanese sensibility, the track radiates warmth and understated elegance. Side-A's 'Hatoba' features a soulful vocal that floats effortlessly over a laid-back rhythm section. The groove is steady and filled with gentle guitar skanks, subtle bass and spacey dub effects that give the song depth without overwhelming its soothing tone. There’s a sense of calm here with this music made for late afternoons and fading light. The instrumental covers the second side to further highlight the excellent backing band. Overall, 'Hatoba' is another beautiful entry in this artist’s extensive catalog and ideal for fitting in with the sound of Flower records.

Everyday Is A Holiday
Jackie Paris - "Everyday Is A Holiday"
Techniques All Star - "Holiday Dub"
Review: A Hornin' Sounds deep cut from Jackie Paris - not the jazz vocalist, but the Jamaican singer formerly of American harmony group The Sensations - this soulful roots number carries the unmistakable mark of Winston Riley. Paris's voice, rich and grainy, sits confidently over a stripped-back, bass-heavy groove, trenchantly dug by Riley, the Techniques founder who helped steer reggae through and past its rocksteady, early dancehall and roots phases. Known for his tight productions and ear for vocal hooks, Riley brings a crisp, unhurried touch here, letting the weight of the rhythm speak.

Make Me Smile
Jackie Paris - "Make Me Smile"
Skin, Flesh & Bones - - "Smile Version"
Review: Jackie Paris of the Sensations formed a vital part of said Jamaican vocal harmony group, who were in turn a vital part of Caribbean island nation's rocksteady and reggae scenes of the 60s. Paris (not to be confused with the American jazz singer of the same name) was in fact frontman, and while his appearances with The Sensations and for his many Duke Reid/Treasure Isle collaborations were indeed sensational, his solo work is oft overlooked. 'Make Me Smile' is the best exception, coming backed on the B by the metallically weighty 'Smile Version', where girding a lackadaisical laxer of an A-side, with its central theme of smily forbearance, lies a merciless trunk of bassweight.

Review: Mittoo? Me too! Jackie Mittoo's Reggae Magic (Soul Jazz) assembles essential lathings and rare grooves from 1967 to 1974, a period when his keyboard work shaped reggae's core sound. After leaving seminal Jamaican ska outfit The Skatalites, Mittoo was de facto CCO at Studio One, driving its signature organ-led style that mounted Kingston's rhythms to earlier, more readily identifiable grooves from the popular sphere, such as the post-bossa flurries of Booker T And The MGs and the knee-slapping soul movements of Stax. The tunes you hear here - 'Hot Milk', 'One Step Beyond' and 'Real Rock' - were reused as riddims over a span of decades, reaching artists from Alton Ellis to The Clash, Lily Allen to Rihanna. Further rarities like 'Ghetto Organ' and 'Soul Stew' also appear, presenting a snapshot of Mittoo's can't-go-back impact on Jamaican music.

Weed Them Out
Weed Them Out (version)
Review: Kirk Davis aka Little Kirk scooped out an explosive lovers' rock career for himself after the 1986 debut 'Ghettoman Skank/Bad Boy Fe Dem', setting sail from Waterhouse, Jamaica to score a wicked eight albums from the mid eights all the way through to 08. 'Weed Them Out' came early as his third single and proved an early digital lovers' rock candy to chew on, its firm rims and Linns standing out stark against a brilliant cascade of synth arpeggios, and lyrics that speak of the fame-making, achievement and entertainment industry travails.

I Saw The Light
Review: Tokyo's ska and rocksteady revivalists Inokasira Rangers turn in yet one of two more new 7"s after a career-length focus on similar rocksteady cover versions, reworking familiar pop giants with signature Hammond heft. One disc flips Oasis's 'Wonderwall' into a slow burning organ-led instrumental with Dunbaresque, well drummed weft, harking Kingston, Manchester or Tokyo depending on the angle of earshot. For those with a Hammond fetish, The B redoes Todd Rungren's 'I Saw The Light', rendering its melody through an especially resonant organ, clicking keypresses galore.

Review: ATA regulars Sam Hobbs and Neil Innes stretch back over two decades of joint musical graft, and The Return Of The Flying Hats shows just how tightly wound that shared rhythm has become. Rooted in Innes's club-hardened taste for Afro-American dancefloor sounds and Hobbs's immersion in everything from New Orleans soul to roots reggae and calypso, the record draws in longtime allies Bob Birch and Chris Dawkins, whose Hammond and guitar works ha e graced British reggae and rock for years. There's a swampy Kingston-New Orleans fusion to 'Grafter' and 'Bust Up', with nods to Lynn Taitt, The Meters and Fatman Riddim Section throughout, and a glorious free-for-all on 'Iron Fist', where Birch plays straight from instinct.

Never Give Up (dub) (4:19)
Review: Jamar McNaughton aka Jamaican dancehall icon Chronixx lives up to his own name, leaving us with chronic catatonia after we find ourselves all too quickly and easily engrossed in his new single, 'Never Give Up'. A stripped-back, slow-burner rocksteady exclaimer rolled through soft percussion, spaceflight keys and a quietly unshakeable hook, it carries a steadfast message, one that lends associatively well to the guesting productive hand of fellow producer and SAULT mastermind Inflo. And what do we have it: just days before mastering the A, Chronixx laid down a dub version, now also pressed solely on this limited 10". This one offers a different kind of protest compared to the earlier, brasher 'Here Comes The Trouble', one rooted in systems thought, and the long arc of change.

X Uhuru
X Uhuru (LP)
Cat: TB 1156.
Review: Jamaican singer Michael Rose reunites with Sly & Robbie across 12 tracks recorded in the early 90s, now given a first vinyl pressing via TABOU1. Best known for his work with Black Uhuru during their late 70s to mid-80s run, Rose brings the same clipped phrasing and distinctive tone to productions that favour machine-programmed rhythms and restrained arrangements. 'Coke Is A Joke' and 'Monkey Business' lean into digital textures without overwhelming the vocal while 'Come Home' and 'Car Wars (Ambient)' explore more spacious and effects-driven territory. Sly & Robbie's approach avoids easy throwbacks. There's clarity to the mix with each element dialled in for precision instead of weight. 'Marcus Garvey' and 'African Girl' return to roots motifs but the surrounding production keeps things forward-facing. Rose's delivery remains intact: urgent, measured and instantly recognisable. This is not a legacy act revisiting past formulas but a session shaped by its own internal logic.
