Review: British heavyweights Underworld delivered one of the 90s' most enduring dance albums with their second LPivisionary, sprawling, and wired with tension. This 2025 reissue does it justice, pressed onto heavyweight vinyl with a half-speed cut that gives its deep, hypnotic sonics fresh bite. From the moment 'Juanita : Kiteless : To Dream Of Love' opens with glitchy insistence and locked grooves, it's clear how ahead of its time this was. The glitch-techno swirl of 'Banstyle/Sappy's Curry' and the growling 'Rowla' nod to Sheffield and Detroit in equal measure, while 'Pearl's Girl' pulses with breakbeat aggression and warped vocals, its grit sharpened here by the remaster. 'Confusion the Waitress' and 'Air Towel' show the band at their most meditative, layering ambience and submerged breaks into something closer to sound design than club tool. Even 'Blueski' and 'Stagger'ishorter, sketch-like piecesifeel essential to the album's industrial-sublime mood. Still fiercely modern, still haunted, still euphoric. An artefact of the past that belongs squarely in the now.

Review: Underworld's sixth LP A Hundred Days Off heard them wean their sound down to a finer but still full Brit-rave sound, not to mention a readiness on their part to break the charts compared to their earlier, yet by all means more esoteric, studio projects such as Dubnobasswithmyheadman. Praised by Uncut as a "beautiful and baffling enigma", the record gave birth to such wonders as 'Two Months Off', 'Trim', 'Ess Gee' and 'Dinosaur Adventure 3D', tracks whose long-form structures and brutalist trance ballistics would continue to prove lactic boons for the stylistic milking. Sheffield art collective The Designers Republic were commissioned to design the iconic balloon-head cover by label V2, also enshrining a spectacular modern art and modern music crossover in this ingenious record.

Review: Once Underworld dealt exclusively in the sweaty intensity of rave culture. These days, they're older, mellower and, presumably, wiser, and their music tends to reflect this. Certainly, Barbara Barbara, We Face A Shining Future is an altogether deeper, groovier and more atmospheric set than their shouty 1990s fare, with genuine moments of heartfelt melancholy ("Motorhome") and Balearic bliss (the Arabic influences and Flamenco guitars of "Santiago Cuatro") amongst the tactile deep house, and woozy European tech-house grooves. Interestingly, there's no standout "anthem" - something at which they've always excelled - and instead a lot of melodious introspection.

Review: More than a few eyebrows were raised when Danny Boyle announced that he'd asked Underworld to write music for the London 2012 Olympics' opening ceremony. While the veteran dance combo has produced some thrilling music over the years, their current output doesn't quite hit the heights of Underworld in their pomp. This career retrospective offers conclusive proof of that argument. By and large, the newer material such as the High Contrast/Tiesto collaboration just doesn't retain the enduring appeal of the older material. With classics like "Cowgirl", "Born Slippy", "Two Months Off", "Rez", "Mmm, Skyscraper I Love You" and "Dark & Long" (their tour de force) all present, Collection is a timely reminder of their talents. At their peak, Underworld were simply untouchable.

Review: There's no denying that Dubnobasswithmyheadman was a landmark electronic album. It marked Underworld's progression from electro-pop also-rans to festival headling techno titans, thanks in no small part to the addition of DJ/producer Darren Emerson to the line-up. This 20th anniversary box set gives the album the treatment it deserves, with a fully re-mastered version of the album being joined by four bonus CDs. While two of these discs feature previously heard material - one disc of singles from the period, another of lesser-known remixes - the other two are of more historical interest. Disc four is particularly illuminating, boasting as it does a swathe of unreleased recordings and demos from the period (including early versions of "Dark & Long" and "Mmm Skyscraper I Love You"), while the final disc presents a live rehearsal recorded in the band's home studio in 1993.

Review: Underworld will release a limited edition 5 x 12" collection of remixes inspired by their recent "Download Only" releases - the "River Run" project. This series of Underworld's 12"s features remixes from Paul Woolford, Wighnomy Bros & Robag Wruhme, Martinez, The Buick Project, Pig & Dan and Peter Heller. The remixers for the project were picked not only for their outstanding productions in the past but also their love of Underworld. Each producer was asked to choose their own favourite elements from any of the three 25 minute downloads and take us on their exploration through the Underworld sound and the results are breathtaking. The Buick Project are Nic Fanciulli (Space resident) and Andy Chatterley. Review: Underworld will release a limited edition 5 x 12" collection of remixes inspired by their recent 'download only' releases -"River Run" project. Pig & Dan, Dutch based producers Dan Duncan & Igor Tchkotoua, who have their own Dutch based record label Submission, have more recently had releases on Sven Vath's Cocoon Records. They have most recently remixed for labels as diverse at Anjuna Beats, Blanco Y Negro, Lost Language. Fans of their work include Deep Dish, Sasha, John Digweed, Laurent Garnier and Hernan Cattaneo. The remixers for the project were picked not only for their outstanding productions in the past but also their love of Underworld. Each producer was asked to choose their own favourite elements from any of the three 25 minute downloads and take us on their exploration through the Underworld sound and the results are breathtaking.
