Review: Shrine Records, though a commercial failure in its time, has risen from obscurity to become a holy grail for collectors of rare soul music. Founded in 1964 by Eddie Singleton and Raynoma Gordy, the label's lack of commercial success belied its treasure trove of musical talent. Despite minimal sales, Shrine's twenty singles became highly coveted among collectors, spurred on by their discovery on the Northern Soul scene in the 70s and 80s. The recent resurgence of interest in Shrine Records has led to the rediscovery of hidden gems from artists like the Cautions, Cairos, and Les Chansonettes. Thanks to the efforts of individuals like Eddie Singleton and Ady Croasdell, original master tapes have been retrieved, revealing previously unreleased tracks from artists such as the Prophets and Tippie & the Wisemen. The "Shrine Northern - The 60s Rarest Dance Label" Kent LP, KENT 526, released last year, celebrated the label's legacy. Now, with the release of a 7x7" box set, Shrine's revival continues. Review: There are an awful lot of great records in the J Dilla's catalogue, but few can match the consistent quality and coherent construction of Welcome 2 Detroit, his 2001 breakthrough album. Designed as a love letter to his home city with a sample palette and blend of styles to match, it saw the late producer and a string of then largely unknown local MCs showcase their vocal talents over some of his best ever beats. This lusciously expansive 20th anniversary box set does a brilliant job in expanding on the original album, with the 12 included "45s" pairing vocal mixes with instrumentals, unreleased cuts and occasional remixes. The included hardback book is brilliant, too, and packed with first-hand accounts of the creation of a now iconic LP.

The album itself is incredible, with fantastic musicianship, arrangements and vocals, while the cast list - which includes original electrofunk outfit Unlimited Touch, Peech Boys main man Bernard Fowler, Honey Dijon, Cindy Mazelle, Moodymann, Kerri Chandler and his son Nico - is similarly impressive. It's a great product, packed with brilliant music: a fitting finale to this portion of the ongping 'Expansions NYC' project.

Tribal psychobilly blues, anyone? Welcome to The Gun Club, where the first rule is that everyone should listen to at least one album by the Jeffrey Lee Pierce-fronted, benchmark-setting, Los Angeline punk outfit. Well, actually, before that we should probably explain exactly why this lot broke the mould when they first landed in the very late-1970s.

At a time when everyone in the US was looking to genre pioneers like Iggy & The Stooges and the New York Dolls for inspiration, this team opted to roll time back much, much further, and start to bring elements of blues, country, and rockabilly to the punk party. The result was a blueprint which has, to some extent, had a huge impact on an array of later greats: Ezra Furman, Horton Heat, Jim Jones, BC Camplight... to name but a few.

Review: Love are one of those cult 60s band with a certain enigma around them, but so dearly adored by those who have let them into their hearts. There are many sides to this wonderful product of the psychedelic era, but perhaps not as widely known as their biggest album Forever Changes is the run of singles they put out between 1966 and 1969. For the first time, those ingles are gathered here as a beautifully presented box set, comprising eight 7"s with unique and original picture sleeves including previously hard to find promo-only records 'Que Vida' / 'Hey Joe' and 'Always See Your Face' / 'August'. In addition to the music there's a 62-page booklet with track-by-track annotation and never-before-seen photographs, making this a collectors item to truly treasure.
