Up first is the main theme from 1974's subway hijack movie The Taking Of The Pelham One Two Three and it is one with a funky, jazzy, high-octane sound that has been sampled by Company Flow, Mix Master Mike and many more. Review: Widely acclaimed and much loved American jazz fusion outfit Weather Report very much dominated the jazz landscape of the seventies and early eighties. It had an ever-rotating assembly of musicians throughout its history with the likes of Austrian keyboardist Joe Zawinul, American saxophonist Wayne Shorter, Czech bassist Miroslav Vitous and American drummer Alphonse Mouzon. 8:30 is their second live album and it came in 1979, swiftly rising to No. 3 on the Billboard Jazz Albums chart and also winning a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Fusion Performance. Zawinul wrote the majority of the tracks which are all freely improvised and escapist.

Rather, each artist invited to contribute to 'A Guide To The Birdsong of Western Africa' was challenged to make an original song both using and inspired by an endangered bird from their country. The album, in its ingenuity, was produced to help fund the Nigerian Bird Atlas Project (NIBAP), a public initiative to encourage young Nigerians get into bird conservation, watching and atlasing. Standouts include Lamine Cissokho's kora imitate the 'Yellow-casqued hornbill', and the lilting call of the 'Nimba flycatcher' included in a warming voice-and-guitar bossa nova piece by Ruth Tafebe.

Review: It goes without saying that 'A Love Supreme' is in the upper echelons of jazz history. A spiritual and emotional proclamation from American jazz saxophonist John Coltrane, the 32 minute runtime is a narrative of strife and struggle with addiction as well as the notable repetition of his riff in all 12 keys throughout the session in 'Acknowledgement'. In many ways you could say Coltrane's playing wasn't improvised at all, and you could argue that the session was better off for it. At the end of the half an hour, the narrative unwinds and Coltrane is declaring a faith to God, a musical thankyou to his faith that kept him true throughout his trials following a spiritual awakening in 1957 - what resulted was an undisputed musical masterpiece.

Most works by Coltrane serve as good introductions to jazz’s endemic practice of through-composition, but A Love Supreme (1964, Impulse!) is arguably among his best works to come in four suites; to quarter a technically singular piece. Widely recognised as the moment at which John all-aboarded the Soul ‘Trane, the album marked the apogee of a wave of popular analyses of US jazz records as holding special spiritual significance. This early vaunting may have fed into its popularity into the present day; but we cannot gloss over the fact that such elevations in status do not tend to come without supreme merit, and more level-headed takes on the LP simply interpret it as one of the most impeccably performed, precisely timed jazz records of its day. Review: Of all his many albums and live shows, A Love Supreme: Live In Seattle is often said by fans to be one Coltrane's greatest works. Until recently, this was a long lost performance from the iconic saxophonist. Recorded in 1964, it is only the second full live performance recording known after one from the Festival Mondial du Jazz Antibes in France from 1965. The quartet for the original recording of one was made up of McCoy Tyner, Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones next to Coltrane himself, but this recording was boosted by Pharoah Sanders on tenor sax and Donald Garrett on second bass. It's a suite packed with spirit, power and soul.

Review: Given that he was the Impulse label's most significant star during its formative years, it seems fitting that a newly discovered live recording of John Coltrane should form part of the acclaimed jazz imprint's 60th anniversary celebrations. What we get is a genuine piece of jazz history: an expanded, wonderfully free-wheeling and hugely atmospheric performance of Coltrane's landmark A Love Supreme suite, recorded live at The Penthouse in Seattle on October 2nd, 1965. Coltrane is of course in prime form, as are his regular accompanying players. Review: Claude Lelouch's 1966 romantic drama, translated into English as A Man and A Woman, is simultaneously filled with hope and tragedy. It's a passionate story but not one without warnings and lessons about the challenges of getting over loss and learning to trust again. It was also a huge success at the time of its release, grossing $14million at the US box office, which was big bucks back then for a foreign language movie. As the title suggests, the plot follows two single parents - he and she - who lost their spouses in horrible circumstances, namely suicide and an accident, and set about building new lives for themselves, which then cross paths. To complement this, French composer Francis Albert Lai created a sexy, playful, but highly emotional score, which ranges from heartfelt songs to jazz cool and laidback rock 'n' roll.

Review: 55 years have passed since Bobby Cole lay this one down in 1965 but that has done nothing to diminish its charms. This reissue from Omnivore has been fully sanctioned by the Estate of Bobby Cole and rightly so because it has had the full treatment - produced for release by Grammy-winner Cheryl Pawelski and remastered by Grammy-winner Michael Graves it captures Cole at his best. He was said to be Frank Sinatra's favourite saloon singer and the range he shows here goes some way to proving why. For some reason, the album was a critical but not commercial success.

Review: Dynamite Cuts has got a couple of Roy Ayers Ubiquity projects in the fire this month - a brilliant 7" double pack as well as this 45rpm. Both sides of this one rather take quite different paths to your affections. 'A Tear To A Smile' is high-speed and complex funk for the dance floor with loopy rhythms and Roy's mad vibes playing over the top next to some neat bass work. Flip it over and you'll find the much more deep and laid-back 'Time & Space' with its lavish cosmic keys and jazz vocals all working you into a star-gazing lather.

Review: Limited edition 7" comes in just 500 copies and features the American soul-jazz band from San Diego, California, known as The Greyboy Allstars. Memners Karl Denson, Elgin Park, Aaron Redfield, Chris Stillwell and Robert Walter have released six albums to date and originally formed as a backing band for rare groove star DJ Greyboy. Here though is the title track of their 'A Town Called Earth' long player from 1997 and it is one that is sure to appeal to jazz and funk heads who enjoy Pharaoh Sanders and Thembi. Review: Released to coincide with Japanese musical Goliath Ryuichi Sakamoto's 70th birthday, To the Moon & Back was almost inevitable. Even without worrying reports about the maestro's health, there's no way anyone can have such a significant impact on global music for so long and not have people wanting to pay tribute upon reaching septuagenarian years.
And what a tribute it is. Taking elements from a huge back catalogue that stretches back to the mid-1970s, contemporary greats including Thundercat, Alva Noto, Hildur Guonadottir, The Cinematic Orchestra, and David Sylvian offer new versions and remixes of the master's stuff, with each track here chosen by Sakamoto, which is about as significant a seal of approval as you could hope for. Like the man himself, it's widely varied, consistently innovative and just really, really good.

Review: Building on the success of their A New Kind of Love album back in 2022, Ghost Funk Orchestra ventures further into the realms of film music, exotica, and psychedelic surf rock with new record A Trip To The Moon.' It was written with the aim of creating a richly layered and collaged listening experience with myriad elements waiting to be discovered with each new spin, and they have certainly achieved that. Featuring fuzzy guitars drenched in spring reverb and horns arranged in a studio big band style, it offers a blend of garage rock attitude and big compositions with influences like Eddie Palmieri and Dusty Springfield to be found within. It also features real recorded transmissions from the Apollo moon missions weaved throughout the tracks as a tale is told of a woman left stranded on Earth by her cosmonaut partner.

Review: Lorenzo Morresi and Tenderlonious are back to build on the success of their first collaboration, last year's 'Cosmica Italiana.' This new single comes ahead of a forthcoming debut album later in the year and features a couple of gorgeous tunes. 'Acqua' is a joyous tune with a steady 6/8 groove that is loaded with flutes, sax lines and arpeggiated synthesizers. On the flipside is 'Tema Cinque' which comes as an electro ballad, powered by hypnotic drums and sweeping pads with lush and moody sopranos. Review: Alto saxophonist Jackie McLean's 1960s output ran the gamut from hard bop to the avant-gard, with his 1964 post-bop dates It's Time! and Action splitting the difference. Now reissued for Blue Note's Tone Poet series, this reissue of the latter LP follows up Rudy Van Gelder's 2004 curator's edition; McLean's playing is lithe and limber here, piquing out from each mix - from the opening fan-outs of 'Plight' to the continual peacockings of 'I Hear A Rhapsody' - as if to suggest that McLean himself knows that his instrument resounds at the exact high frequency that naturally commands human attention. With the Tone Poet series primed for audiophiles, you're in for a treat.

Review: Now more than 80 years old and onto its umpteenth reissue after the latest was a 75th anniversary edition in 2015, Wayne Shorter's Adam's Apple remains as classic as ever. This Classic Vinyl Series issue is all-analogue and mastered by Kevin Gray from the original master tapes then pressed on 180g vinyl. Next to sax from Wayne himself, Herbie Hancock, Reggie Workman and Joe Chambers joined the ranks to help cook up these serious grooving and cool-cat tunes. Review: It is always a highly anticipated event when Ikebe Shakedown drop new music and that is the case here once more. First up they tackle a legendary Ennio Morricone track as the A-side. Their take on 'Adonai' retains all the Western soundtrack charm of the original but with added horns, plenty of filthy but funky guitar riffs and a driving rhythm section sure to make its mark on the club. 'Waiting For The Storm' is a brand new cut that slows things down on the flip with jumbled drums and loose claps making for a more sensuous sound.

Review: This reissue from Jazz Room is one from the rather more obscure end of the jazz spectrum but it is well worthy of your time. Johnny Walker - not the same guy as the whisky magnate - recorded this one when he was touring the world with veteran jazz star Lionel Hampton back in 1982. The sounds that defined his signature are drenched in funk with fat beats powering them along. The excellent rhythm section work really shines through here on an album that was originally released on his own Private Press label.

Review: Spasibo Records has been busy lining up plenty of great funk sounds that all seem to be dropping at once. One of them is this limited yellow and red marbled vinyl from The Great Revivers. The band hail from St Petersburg in Russia and these two instrumental tunes are perfect examples of their lush library funk sound. Both were recorded pre-pandemic back in 2019 at a vintage studio in an old church. The organs really shimmer and bring the heat to opening cut 'Adventures Begin' while 'Estrellas' dial down into a more late night and intimate atmosphere before the funky breaks and neat guitar riffs come on with full force.

Review: The Great Revivers is a funk and library band with a focus on organ laced grooves that hails from Saint Petersburg, Russia. It was formed around a decade or so ago from members of bands Wake&Bake! and The Reggaenauts and has put out a steady stream of very danceable 7"s since then. 'Adventures Begin' is their latest and it comes on the Spasibo label with lashing of loquacious saxophone and some nice loose, live drumming. Flip it over for something more laid back and starry eyed - 'Estrellas' has a soothing late night feel and brims with musicality.

Review: Manu Dibango's grooves will never dull with time. The Cameroonian sax man made some of the most infectious, feel-good funk to ever transmit from the African continent, and here's one of his heavy-hitting high-watermarks, reissued by Soul Makossa. African Voodoo originally came out in 1972, a year that saw nearly all Dibango's most revered jams cut loose on an unsuspecting public. These sessions were recorded in France with Yvan Julien on trumpet, Slim Pezin on guitar, Jacques Bolgnesi on trombone and Lucien Dobat on drums to name but a part of the line-up, but of course it's Dibango holding court on the vibes, marimba, sax and organ who brings the unmistakable magic to the music.
