The Shining
The Shining (split coloured vinyl 7")
Cat: DW 200B. Rel: 03 Dec 21
The Shining (main Title) (3:25)
Rocky Mountains (2:55)
Review: This tri-colour 7" one-off compiles two select cuts from the soundtrack to Kubrick's essential horror The Shining. Available on vinyl for the first time in over 40 years, the colours of the record are the same colours as the Overlook hotel hallway's rug that appears in one of the film's most haunting scenes. It includes the film's main theme, and 'Rocky Mountains', both composed by the legendary Wendy Carlos alongside her little-known contemporary Rachel Elkind. As film buffs will recall, jilting doom and gloom is the main emotion felt, before a droning chord catacylsm ensues on the B side.

Assault On Precinct 13 (2:53)
The Fog (3:02)
Review: Another burst of contemporary-sounding gems from John Carpenter film scores, and this is good news to both the collectors and the sample junkies. On this latest missile we have the famous brooding synths and trite '80s romance of "Assault On Precinct 13", still a much coveted album by the diggers and one that is often heard on the more expansive DJ sets; the B-side is made up of "The Fog", a 1980 piece of history that once again manages to contain a true 80's spirit without the predictability of many sings from that era. Wonderful and, of course, highly recommended.

Halloween/Escape From New York (Soundtrack)
Cat: SBR 156PIC. Rel: 14 Jun 16
Halloween (2:57)
Escape Form New York (3:34)
Review: Sacred Bones is not messing around when it comes to reissuing mythical songs from legendary soundtracks across the board, and their latest releases truly do get the old mouth-watering. This new picture disc contains 1979's "Halloween" on the A-side, and 1981's "Escape From New York", both timeless films that have left viewers awestruck thanks to, in part, their fantastic scores. You'll all recognise that Halloween chimes, those eerie chimes of coldwave synths, but perhaps Escape From New York is less immediately recognisable, but that's a shame because it is potentially the less aged of the two and still a track to break a set in half with something beautiful and unexpected.

Die Klapperschlange (Escape From New York) (Nomoo remix)
Review: One of legendary filmmaker John Carpenter's few forays into electro-disco proper, 'Die Klapperschlange' is an instant throwback, the title theme from the 1981 sci-fi film Escape From New York. Everyone knows this melody, yet few could point to its origin, and that's likely due to the German release of the John Carpenter film being titled 'Die Klapperschlange' ('The Rattlesnake'). And yes, you heard us right: John Carpenter himself made this piece of music. A multi-talented man indeed, though he did work with fellow composer and sound designer Alan Howarth to add the finishing touches here. It's as if this track were made for the anarcho-discos of the future, its inherent darkness rendering it seemingly unassailable by the crumbling of society or public breakouts of violence depicted in the film. Plus, there's *that* unmistakable four-bar extension, in which a three-note hook has permanently wedged itself in our minds - wowee. And on this new release via ZYX, we've got two new alt-mixes and an outrun techno remix from Nomoo. Sweet!

You Can't Fight (original remastered version)
You Can't Fight (Riccio rerub)
Review: Fans of classic film will be all over this reissue. Jimmy Chambers' "You Can't Fight It" was written for John Carpenter's brilliant soundtrack to his classic 1976 horror flick Assault On Precinct 13. However the song only ever made it into the Italian edition of the film for some reason, despite it being a genius blend of Chambers' soulful vocals, parping funk horns, synthesizer motifs and delay-laden beats. This reissue is timely - it was only ever issued on 7" in the late 70's - and comes backed with a superb rework from Italian producer Riccio. He wisely emphasizes Carpenter's synth work and the snappy but dubwise beats, layering those horns and Chambers' brilliant vocal atop. Stellar stuff.

Cat: FKSP 020. Rel: 30 Jun 21
Xenon (long Effects) (3:44)
Xenon (vocal Effects) (0:45)
Xenon (short Effects) (2:52)
Review: She's the Diva of the Diode, five-time Grammy Awards-nominee for Best New Age Album, and one of America's all-time top synthesising pioneers. If that doesn't tell you almost everything there is to know about Xenon then we're really not sure what will. Ciano is a sound designer, composer, and label executive whose 1970s output was her most commercially successful, but has never backed off from the release schedule, or lost her innovative abilities.

This addition to any Ciani fan's collection is very much everything she's about. Comprising just three tracks, or rather two short tunes and an interlude of just 45-seconds, the best way to describe this is an experiment in descending notes and noises, formed into patterns which slowly present forms of sonic structure. Whether that's warbles or wobbles, bleeps or vocal samples.

The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra - "The James Bond Theme" (with original Bond Theme Guitarist Vic Flick) (1:55)
London Music Works - "Goldfinger" (with Louise Dearman) (2:52)
Review: It's not long now until the much-delayed new James Bond film gets released, so to mark the occasion - and Record Store Day - the good folks at Silva Screen have decided to offer up this seven-inch containing cover versions of theme tunes from the iconic spy series. On the A-side, the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra joins forces with guitarist Vic Flick on a fittingly excitement-packed take on Monty Norman's original 'James Bond Theme'. Flick reprises his 1960s spy-funk guitar licks from the original version, while the orchestra hits all the right notes on a familiar favourite. Arguably even better is London Sound Works' similarly authentic and luscious cover of 'Goldfinger', with Louise Dearman doing a rather good impression of Dame Shirley Bassey.

Les Velos (1:46)

Drole De Jeu De Dames (2:29)
Review: Jean Claudric's Jeu De Dames is considered one of the best French jazz funk soundtracks ever. If you don't know it, but are a fan of the likes of Michel Legrand and Jean-Pierre Mirouze, then it's time to get to know it via this fine taster on 45rpm. All four of the tracks are exquisitely impressive and evocative pieces which were by far and a way the best thing about the vaguely subversive, naive but never fully erotic charm flick for which they were written. While that was a commercial failure, the OST never was.

Review: It is one of the most successful and domineering computer games of all times, which is completely baffling to anyone over a certain age. But whether or not you understand Minecraft doesn't matter, it has global appeal and a unique soundtrack. It is that which is paid tribute to here with Ghostly International dropping the Minecraft Volume Alpha as composed by Rosenfeld under his C418 alias. It's a record of vibrant sound design that echos the work of Pete Namlook and Brian Eno and is sure to become a cult classic in its own right.

Review: While the appeal of Minecraft may be lost on some, there's no doubting the cultural significance of the immersive, user-built game. One of the title's most attractive features has always been its' music, which was composed, played and produced by a hitherto unknown German producer called Daniel Rosenfeld, under the C418 alias. Here, in the first of two volumes, Ghostly International showcases the best of Rosenfeld's work for the series. Sitting somewhere between the spacious ambience of Pete Namlook and Brian Eno, the heart-aching piano motifs of Eric Satie, and the sweeping orchestral pulse of a movie soundtrack, the 24 pieces here stand up with anything released by seasoned ambient producers in recent times.

Review: The reissue of Cagnet's Love Generation soundtrack is a nostalgic treasure for fans of 90s Japanese drama music. Originally composed for the hit series Love Generation (1997), starring Takuya Kimura and Takako Matsu, this soundtrack beautifully captures the show's emotional depth. Cagnet. led by Daisuke Hinata, crafted a unique blend of smooth jazz, pop, and wistful melodies that perfectly mirror the highs and lows of the drama's love story. Ahead of the time for then, now fits well with the Japanese reissue focus on smooth City Pop sounds. What sets this soundtrack apart is its balance between atmospheric background music and catchy, memorable tunes, which play an integral role in heightening the emotional resonance of key scenes. These tracks show Cagnet's ability to weave together soulful rhythms with melodic sophistication, making this reissue a perfect trip down memory lane. Now available on clear red double vinyl, Love Generation is an ideal piece to fit in with the classic Japanese drama soundtracks.

Review: Peaky Blinders is a saga that will live on in British cultural folklore long after people stop streaming the show itself. And the legacy of arguably the coolest show to come out of the UK in several years is as much to do with the contemporary stylisation of what's essentially a period piece as it is the attitude it exudes. An atmosphere that's distinctly British, to say the least. A key aspect of the overall impact is the soundtrack, and who better to craft the score to this dark, violent, socially-imbalanced, politically-volatile period in English gangster history than Anna Calvi. The high priestess of alternative, brooding, tense rock & roll plucked straight from the depths of surrealism, every pluck and chord seems to intensify the overall feeling, seducing us with a combination of breathy spoken word, operatic contralto, and tense virtuoso guitar playing.

Review: .If the aim of any commissioned soundtrack score is to provide music that enhances and emphasises the on-screen action, then Anna Calvi's work on BBC smash Peaky Blinders is up there with the best of them. While Calvi only provided soundtracks to two seasons - five and six, both of which are presented on this limited double-disc release - the distinctive sound worlds she created suited series' dark and stylish visual tone. All low-slung basslines, dystopian effects, snarling riffs and squally, stretched-out guitar solos, the collected instrumentals stand on their own two feet while naturally conjuring up mental glimpses of key scenes for those who watched and loved the award-winning series.

Review: From the moment you hit play on 'A New Threat Is Born', the first few minutes on this soundtrack to the acclaimed video game, Resident Evil 3, you could easily close your eyes and feel like you're back sat in front of a TV playing the story through. If you're unfamiliar with the franchise, let's just say it (re)wrote the book on survival horror, and a big part of this was in the scores used to accompany the on-screen tension. Less focused on specific theme tunes and tracks, over time the emphasis has increasingly fallen on building atmosphere and setting up jump scares for unassuming players. On a record, that sounds like a combination of fast moving and quickly developing instrumental movements and intimidating sound effects. Perhaps not the dinner party soundtrack you were looking for, nevertheless it makes a big impact.

Review: It's nice to see TV music scores being pressed onto vinyl in an age of computerised music. It's even nicer to see this specific score being officially released because it really transmits a mood of its own and one that's wrapped in a smoky, 50s kinda vibe. Mad Men has been one of the most successful American TV shows next to The Wire and Breaking Bad, and we always thought the music was blisteringly good! David Carbonara delivers an ethereal mixture of ambient, jazz and improv, making this a worthy addition to any collector's discography. Red vinyl, too!

Review: Audio Fidelity are fast-becoming one of our favourite reissue labels! It was them who were responsible for the Blade Runner re-vamp, an album so rare in its original vinyl format that It was truly unmissable. This time its another doozy, and also one which has been relegated to the pockets of the Discogs shotters. Wendy Carlos' inimitable Tron soundtrack was probably the best part of the film anyway, but now you can at least have the choice of owning both film and score! It's just tune after tune, spanning different genres and sounds. From the rocky sounds of "Only Solutions" to more abstract electronic moments such as "We've Got Company", this LP has it all. Don't snooze, it'll be gone all over again!

Review: Is Wendy Carlos one of the most underrated and overlooked of the female synth pioneers? It probably depends who you ask, with the die hard archivists no doubt ready to stand up and scream "who doesn't remember, respect, and revere her?" Nevertheless, in terms of popular culture she hasn't received the same level of reappraisal as the likes of Delia Derbyshire in recent years, in the UK at least, although perhaps that's because Britain always loves celebrating British achievements.

In all honesty, Carlos is just as important as anyone who has ever laid a finger on a synthesizer. Her legacy includes helping develop the benchmark setting Moog, alongside three truly unforgettable and iconic soundtracks. The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, and finally Tron, the latter - this - forsaking omnipresent tension and sense of impending doom, and menacing, snarling electronic takes on classical overtures, for something more in keeping with a Disney movie - fantastical, sweeping, and emotionally charged.

Review: Robin Carolan's latest score for Robert Eggers' Nosferatu is a darkly atmospheric work that fuses gothic elements with a broad range of instruments and sounds. Following their successful collaboration on The Northman, Carolan once again teams up with Eggers to craft a haunting, meticulously composed score that complements the eerie 19th-century setting. British musician Daniel Pioro leads the orchestration, which features 60 string players, a full choir, horns, woodwinds, a harpist and two percussionists. Despite this grandeur, one of the trickiest pieces to perfect was the opening music box which really shows Carolan and Eggers' meticulous attention to detail. Carolan sought to avoid modern influences in the score while embracing contemporary instruments, a balance enhanced by Letty Stott's use of ancient horns and pipes. Carolan's inspirations were diverse, from Bartok and Coil to films like The Innocents and Eyes Wide Shut. He also drew from the Ukrainian film The Eve of Ivan Kupalo to shape the otherworldly tone of the score. Rather than focusing on horror cliches, Carolan emphasised the melancholic and tragic aspects of the story, adding a layer of warped romanticism. The result is an evocative soundtrack that, while perfectly aligned with the film, also stands as a powerful work of art on its own.

Review: Essex based composer and music producer Robin Carolan is the man behind the acclaimed Tribute Angle label. He's worked with a fine array of artists including Bjork and Holy Other and now links with Seb Gainsborough who makes electronic and orchestral music as Vessel. This is the first time the pair have worked with director Robert Eggers on a score together and the results speak for themselves. It is harsh and uncomfortable with a dirty aesthetic that is designed to match the film, The Northman, and does so with great sympathy and respect to the authenticity of the Viking era period piece.

Review: In 1981, prolific film director John Carpenter made Escape From New York, a near-future dystopian action film which has inspired a whole generation of movie producers and musicians. Mr. Carpenter also took care of its soundtrack, originally out on Milan Records and reissued in 2000 by Silva Screen, and again now. If you haven't heard it before, it's a true journey into the depths of electronics. The double LP contains 27 songs, all representative of the chilling scenes in the film, ranging from vintage drones, to flurries of orchestral instrumentation, and even bursts of new age sounds. It's a mood record, and one which should be enjoyed with an open mind and an attentive set of ears. A classic.

Review: NYC's Sacred Bones delivers some quality recordings yet again. This time legendary American horror film director John Carpenter gets the remix treatment by an all-star cast giving his eerie and epic synth excursions some brilliant revisions. There really is some true gems on here. Prurient gives "Purgatory" an injection of his typically morbid and distorted extreme noise terror. Skinny Puppy's legendary frontman OhGr gives "Wraith" an immersive dark industrial makeover while Silent Servant gives "Vortex" his typically stylish and razor sharp EBM vibe, albeit a slower one than usual. On the second disc another industrial music legend and (Zola Jesus collaborator) J.G. Thirwell works his magic on "Abyss" and PAN label boss Bill Kouligas gives "Fallen" one of two remixes; his staying on the soundtrack vibe of the original but giving it a futuristic, high fidelity revision like you'd expect from him.

Review: Perhaps the most coveted of Death Waltz's excellent series of reissues thanks to its Dinos Chapman designed cover art and splattered vinyl, the swift sell out of their reissue of John Carpenter's score to The Fog has ensured a repress for the title, this time on gold vinyl. Whatever colour the vinyl is seems irrelevant when you're talking about one of Carpenter's most iconic scores; telling the story of a small North California fishing town terrorised by a glowing supernatural fog containing the vengeful ghosts of six murdered lepers, Carpenter's score built on the more simplistic piano melody and synthesiser combination of the iconic Halloween score to create something much more abstract and foreboding.

Review: There's universal agreement that John Carpenter's soundtrack to his own cult horror classic Assault on Precinct 13 is something of a synthwave classic. It's heartening, then, to see it re-released in newly re-mastered form (approved by the legendary director himself, no less), in plush packaging. Sparse, creepy and moody, built around recurring themes (a staple of high quality soundtracks), Carpenter's atmospheric compositions bristle with spine tingling synths and bustling analogue beats. There are, though, surprise moments; the classic electric piano warmth of "Julie", the piercing, high-pitched intensity of "Revenge" and "Sanctuary" and the hissing percussion of "Second Wave" prove Carpenter was always capable of producing more than just superb variations on a theme.

Review: Death Waltz were one of 2012?s most impressive new labels; under the watchful eye of Rough Trade East's Spencer Hickman they reissued soundtracks from several Carpenter films as well as the scores of Zombie Flesh Eaters, The Living Dead At The Manchester Morgue, Donnie Darko and 2008 Swedish horror film Let The Right One In, all with striking bespoke artwork rendered just for their vinyl reissues. Their appreciation for the work of John Carpenter continues here with an expanded reissue of the director's 1988 cult hit They Live. Given that They Live is one of the rare Carpenter films to straddle the horror, science-fiction and thriller genres, its no surprise that the score - composed by Carpenter himself and longtime collaborator Howarth - is one of the more intriguing efforts to grace a Carpenter film. Expect a journey through electronic blues graved with a dusty slow pulsating western feel.

The director behind such classics as The Thing and Escape From L.A. presented the first volume of unreleased soundtracks from the crypt last year, followed up by a brilliant remix compilation featuring the likes of Silent Servant, Skinny Puppy's Nivek Ogre and Zola Jesus amongst others. On this volume, Carpenter's unmistakeable sound for these imaginary soundtracks has many a nugget, our favourites were the ever perfect arpeggiations of "Persia Rising", soundtracking the most beautiful of Arabian nights, the indisputable vintage charm of analogue machines on the wonderfully epic "Windy Death" and the tribute to another true legend of the big screen on "Bela Lugosi" you could just imagine F.W Murnau making his grand entrance as you hear this unearthed classic.

Review: Is John Carpenter the best soundtrack composer of all time? The jury will always be out on that one, but chances are if you're reading this you'd prefer to tuck into the score to Assault On Precinct 13 than the pomp and pageantry of, say, John Williams or Hans Zimmer. Not that we don't have a huge amount of time for both those maestros, too. Lost Themes IV: Noir isn't really a soundtrack, of course, and goes some way to positioning Carpenter as a true musical genius well beyond any connection with the silver screen. Like listening to midnight blue descend over the endless sprawl of an unnamed city in soft focus, the album is packed with after dark overtures steeped in the kind of atmosphere you can cut with a knife.

The movie was an American supernatural horror that was co-written and directed by John Carpenter, about a glowing fog that sweeps over a small coastal town and is filled with vengeful ghosts. The sound track is synth driven (making great use of gear such as Sequential Circuits Prophet 5, Prophet 10, and Minimoog Model DO) and brilliantly spooky and is, according to Carpenter himself, one of his best musical works. We agree.

Review: 1988's They Live is still regarded as one of Carpenter and Howarth's most iconic films and it's surely something to do with the soundtrack! While it's often described as electronic blues, there's a whole spectrum of styles and influences contained within it. "Transient Hotel", for example, is a weird and wonderful cocktail of psych, blues, acoustic guitar an odd electronic frequencies. To be honest, the record should be owned simply for its singularity among Hollywood's original scores. Another recommended release from the Death Waltz crew!

Review: Essential repress from the Death Waltz Recording Co! Spencer Hickman's brilliant label have repressed several of their excellent soundtrack projects from 2012 this week due to popular demand and a clear highlight of them is this masterful presentation of John Carpenter's classic score for his own seminal 80s Kurt Russel vehicle Escape From New York. Released back in 1981, Carpenter's compositions for this score have equaled if not surpassed Vangelis' Bladerunner OST as a reference point for musicians and journalists alike and the chance to own this expanded edition should not be passed up a second time. In addition to the six extra tracks not included on the original score, Death Waltz have commissioned poster artist Jay Shaw aka Iron Jaiden to deliver some all new artwork and there are sleeve notes from Carpenter and his close friend and collaborator Alan Howarth. A film buff' dream!

Review: Following the celebrated reissue of the epochal Escape From New York, Death Waltz are turning back to their old flame John Carpenter for some more 80s soundtrack delight. This time it's the schlocky joys of Prince Of Darkness, featuring more of those ethereal synths that define the Carpenter sound, from choral notes to bombastic canned strings and spooky bass arpeggios. It's not hard to see why this music is enjoying a revival at the amount as these compositions swell in your ears, so rich in atmosphere and character as they are. Of course soundtrack music is written as an accompaniment, but when the music is this powerful it stands on its own.

They Live (Soundtrack) (limited eco vinyl LP)

Review: We’ll never tire of John Carpenter and Alan Howarth’s iconic, synth-drenched soundtracks. Whichever cinematic genre he was exploring from slasher horror to dystopian sci-fi, Carpenter knew exactly the kind of score he was after. Surely ranking among his greatest works is They Live, the 1988 ass-kicking classic taking a not so subtle dig at the machinations of capitalist society through the power of Randy Roddy Piper’s acting. Death Waltz always do a top job of packaging up Carpenter and Howarth’s music with fresh artwork and attention to sound quality, and this edition of the They Live OST pressed on eco-vinyl is no different.

Halloween III Season Of The Witch (Soundtrack)
Cat: DWE 8.
Review: John Carpenter and Alan Howarth's soundtrack for Halloween III: Season of the Witch is a chilling masterpiece that perfectly complements the eerie atmosphere of the film. Released in 1982, the score combines Carpenter's signature synthesizer melodies with Howarth's electronic expertise to create a hauntingly atmospheric soundscape. Tracks like 'Chariots of Pumpkins' and 'Halloween Montage' are iconic examples of their collaborative genius, instilling a sense of dread and unease. The pulsating rhythms and sinister melodies enhance the film's suspense and terror, making it a standout in the realm of horror soundtracks. Carpenter and Howarth's collaboration remains a timeless classic for horror aficionados.

Review: John Carpenter's knack for cinematic storytelling without the screen takes centre stage on this deluxe reissue, marking ten years since the release of the great American soundtrack artist's first Lost Themes edition. The new expanded edition, complete with artwork by Greg Ruth, offers more than just a nostalgic revisit; it adds a new 7" featuring two unreleased tracks, 'Cruisin' With Mr. Scratch' and 'Dominator', both pulled from the original sessions. When it first came out, the album stood out for its vivid, visceral style, blending horror, science fiction, and eerie synthwork into standalone pieces that could easily score unseen films.

Review: The Halloween soundtrack is still going strong, thanks to the untarnishable coattails of John Carpenter's original and spectral Halloween theme. For this first-time vinyl release, Sacred Bones immortalise the work of Carpenter, his equally talented son Cody, and guitarist/producer Daniel Davies, who teamed up as a scoring trio for the penultimate instalment in the film series, Halloween Kills, in 2021. With each motif lasting no longer than two minutes on average, this is an OST full of off-key arpeggiations, sinister low notes and sonic bumps in the night.

Review: A decade ago, legendary horror movie composer/director John Carpenter joined forces with son Cody and godson Daniel Davies to make Lost Themes, a collection of new musical compositions to "soundtrack the movies in your mind". It kick-started a prolific period of musical activity which included both real soundtracks and music made for imaginary ones. Lost Themes IV sits in the latter camp, with the trio delivering music inspired by the aesthetic of "noir" movies. While Carpenter senior's suspenseful, paired-down drum machine rhythms and clandestine synthesiser sounds are still present, they work in harmony with creepy effects, immersive sound effects and additional instrumentation. For proof, see the growling guitars on 'My name IS Death' and the exotic classical guitars and sitars of 'He Walks. By Night'.

Review: RECOMMENDED
At the end of the day John Carpenter could present us with infinite takes on the original Halloween tune - that creepy piano masterpiece - and we'd gobble up everything he has to offer. It's a simple case of four notes, or thereabouts, played in a repetitive loop, and it seems to conjure the most disturbing mental images you can imagine. A stroke of genius, you might say.

Halloween Kills is essentially the reprise of all that made the original movie score so powerful. There's not much here that didn't feature in the inaugural franchise outing, but in 2021 the raw and decidedly pared back atmospheres have been built on, expanded, born again, but crucially not ruined. Is John Carpenter the greatest film musician of all time? Hans Zimmer may disagree, but we say "of course".

Review: Before we get into it, let's just stop to consider what it must be like to be John Carpenter' son. A titan of horror, science fiction, and fantasy filmmaking who overcame early critical smiting to garner first a global cult following and more latterly reappraisal and recognition from the cinematic institution, while the reality of having this cultural powerhouse as a parent probably isn't along these lines, we like to think childhood was one long creative play session where imagination was only held back by the need to sleep.

Spurious point made, this latest addition to JC's musical oeuvre sees him team up with offspring Cody - a musician and composer in his own right - and long-time collaborator Daniel Davies for the score to the most recent reboot in the Halloween franchise. You can't touch a classic, of course, but what the actual movie lacked in originality the music more than compensates for, taking what was already an unsettling and chilling aural experience and modernising without fundamentally changing.
