Review: Who doesn't love Toy Story? It's an on going classic with a heart of gold, some of The best animation in the film world and most loveable characters to ever make the silver screen. Whether young or old, snuggling down to watch this sone is always a treat, and now you can bring some of that magic onto your decks with the red vinyl compilation album. It brings together some of the best tracks and favourite musical moments of the movie such as, of course the most notable song of them all, 'You've Got A Friend In Me (Para El Buzz Espanol)' as well as 'I Will Go Sailing No More' and 'We Belong Together.'

Review: Denis Villeneuve's psychological thriller about a man who sees his doppelganger in a movie, and begins an obsessive search for the look-alike, is a strange, tense, highly stylised dive into a world that's informed by some of the masters of surrealist tension. At times invoking landmark mind-benders such as David Lynch's Lost Highway, albeit with a far less experimental narrative structure, to say its score works hard to set the tone is putting it mildly.
Created by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans, Enemy's soundtrack is a joy, but also thoroughly trippy. It's unnerving, and yet inviting, laidback while also mournful, and always has this air of the unknown and uncertain about it. Boasting white noise, strings, drones, woodwind, elements of classical, jazz and library sounds are all here, at times invoking space age imagery, in other moments taking use back to the great mysteries of 20th Century cinema.

Review: Essex based composer and music producer Robin Carolan is the man behind the acclaimed Tribute Angle label. He's worked with a fine array of artists including Bjork and Holy Other and now links with Seb Gainsborough who makes electronic and orchestral music as Vessel. This is the first time the pair have worked with director Robert Eggers on a score together and the results speak for themselves. It is harsh and uncomfortable with a dirty aesthetic that is designed to match the film, The Northman, and does so with great sympathy and respect to the authenticity of the Viking era period piece.

Review: Over the last couple of years, author Justin Hopper has joined folk musician Sharron Kraus and vintage synthesizer fetishists Belbury Poly on stage to narrate sections of his 2017 novel "Old Weird Albion" - a "poetical, autobiographical and psycho-geographical account" of his experiences at Chanctonbury Ring in West Sussex. This album is, in effect, an extended re-recording of those performances, with Hopper reading choice excerpts from his book over an inspired fusion of traditional folk tropes - think recorder, flute, and drifting female vocals - atmospheric field recordings and 1970s style electronic instrumentation. Given that these synths have largely been used to re-record tudor style Baroque tunes (think "Greensleeves" and you're close), the results are not only delightfully eccentric but also admirably unique.

Review: It's the anime that changed the format forever, from storytelling to character design - Neon Genesis Evangelion is still, to this day, one of the most beloved, divisive and iconic animated series of all time. From influencing 'Madoka Magicka', 'Serial Experiments Lain' or 'Kill La Kill' to its resurgence in popularity thanks to social media and the infinite memes that the show continues to spawn off almost 30 years later. Many will know 'Cruel Angels Thesis' and the bossa nova cover of 'Fly Me to the Moon' performed by J-Pop singer Yoko Takahashi, which are used as the intro and credit sequence songs, but don't neglect the electrifying orchestral composition from Shiro SAGISU that backsets the action sequences. This is the first time the full OST is pressed on vinyl. It comes in a beautiful gatefold featuring frames from the show inside, housed on black and blue vinyl to reflect the colour palette of this hugely influential show.

They have pressed this one up to various formats and this is a gatefold transparent lime green and black splattered vinyl from the acclaimed film scorer. He wrote for epics such as Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, The Sheltering Sky and The Last Emperor. Review: Not seen Exception? OK, let's start there. The Netflix series is at the vanguard of new adult animation epics. Setting its scene(s) in the future, we follow a space mission crew desperately searching for a world that can be terraformed in order to sustain life, humans already having been driven from Earth. It's a stark and foreboding journey which resonates almost too much in an age when the climate crisis is just beginning to show us what happens next.
For something like this you need a score of serious standards, so who better to draft than the master himself, Ryuchi Sakamoto. One of Japan's most respected, revered, and iconic musical minds is pretty much capable of creating anything, from curious pop to the kind of atmospheric overtures, strange incidentals, ambient arrangements and nerve-rattling movements that define this soundtrack.

Review: There is just no stopping Vibez 93, one of the busiest and most relabel beat makers in the drum & bass world right now. This new EP, Punkrocker, is another hard-hitting one in several different ways. The opener 'Aquatic Rock' makes an emotional impact - the soulful sounds, ambient pads and delicate floating breaks get you in the mood before things get darker with driving bass and ragga vocals. 'Herault' is another one with jazzy melodies and warm, spring-day atmospheres over tumbling drums and the title cut then gets playful on broken beats, undulating rhythms and filtered melodic loops. 'Serious (Style & Niceness)' is icy and minimal and brilliant.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Record sleeve damaged, product in working order***

With a string of soundtrack credits as long as your proverbial arm, it's no surprise Yellow Magic Orchestra man Ryuichi Sakamoto was top of the list when it came to scoring this "sumptuous romantic melodrama" from director Ann Hui. This is his first score for a Chinese film, however, and he pulls out the emotional stops to betray the tense, tumultuous stirrings going on beneath the surface of tight lipped manners and suppressed feelings. Many of the themes are explored through simple piano playing before returning in the form of complex string arrangements, a clever trick that proves Sakamoto was worthy of his Best Original Film Score prize at the 40th Hong Kong Film Awards for this work.

Review: When The Last Of Us first debuted in video game form, its soundtrack, composed by Gustavo Santaollala, took the world by storm for its instantly memorisable motifs and folkish sensibility. Driven largely by guitars and other acoustics, it did well to represent TLOU's wider world; that of a world driven murderous and inhospitable by a mutant strain of the (very real) cordyceps fungus. Now, along with the mind-blowing TV series reboot of the story, comes Santaollala's parallel reboot of the soundtrack. The Argentinian composer amps up (albeit subtly) most of the original and most recognisable themes from the original game, fleshing out the soundtrack in tandem with the expansion of the franchise and lore. The soundtrack also features additional music by David Fleming, a British composer who has collaborated with Santaolalla on many an occasion.

Review: This release marks the first offical vinyl outing for Gustavo Santaolalla and Mac Quayle's soundtrack. It is the highly anticipated 2020 sequel, The Last Of Us Part II and features stunning new artwork by Tula Lotay and liner notes by Co-Writer and Director Neil Druckmann. Musically it is a striking and emotive listen that takes in moments of bass heavy impending doom next to gentler tracks of acoustic guitar that soundtrack tearful moments. The dual narratives of revenge and differing perspectives of the game all shine through in beautiful fashion.

A mix of chiptune-inspired synths and lo-fi beats, crafted delicately and softly for the modern listener, combine to create this lovely ode to everybody's favourite green, giant-nosed reptile. Yoshi's greatest character themes - including those from Mario Kart, Super Mario World, and Yoshi's Story - all combine in an unequivocally cute mood here.

Review: Not your everyday crime thriller, Man On A Swing (1976) doesn't just follow a detective solving a murder with his very own machismic wits. It rather sees the main character consult a local mystic for help, in what can only be described as a far more holistic and spiritually in-touch mystery than most out there. Lalo Schifrin's OST is as entertaining and stark as this premise suggests, blending every influence from disco to funk to bossa nova into a rather exciting affair.

Review: The Cowboy Bebop was an anime series that was much loved for its soundtrack albums by Japanese composer and instrumentalist Yoko Kanno and his band the Seatbelts. The sounds were weird and wonderful affairs that made odd connections between seemingly disparate worlds - jazz, rock, J-pop and electronic, often with a curious aesthetic. Just this year, Kanno has returned to soundtracking the series on Netflix so this reissue is sure to connect with fans old and new. It is largely instrumental, with big band pieces next to more ambient passages and extensive alto sax deployment. As far as cult records go, this one is right up there.

Review: Widely hailed as one of the greatest animes of all time, and certainly one of the most successful, Cowboy Bebop was celebrated for its music as much as its narrative and animation. The soundtrack was composed by Yoko Kanno, who formed a blues and jazz band Seatbelts especially for the task. Kanno took a bold approach following her own instincts instead of sticking close to the requests from director Shinichiro Watanabe, and in turn her music ended up having a big impact on the way production unfolded. Quite simply, the end result would have been very different without Kanno's work, which has been faithfully packaged on this stunning double LP edition, pressed in brown and white vinyl.

Review: Whirlybird is a documentary which demanded a different sort of sound from Ty Segall,. He departs for his usual rock vibe and took on this challenge with an all new vibe. The resulting soundtrack is crafted from a variety of synth sounds, electric keyboards, drums, percussion and saxophones and off course, some of his signature guitars, It is sorry telling instrumental music with a real sense of its own narrative and perfectly frames the film's compulsive themes and images. It stands alone as a fine listen and a great testament to Ty's versatility.

Review: David Shire has one hell of a back catalogue. Active within music since the 1960s, and specifically theatre and film soundtracks in the 1970s, while many of the biggest names behind movie scores have a tendency to explore the same avenues, and therefore wind up creating tunes for relatively similar flicks, in this case that's not really true. The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (the original, of course), All The President's Men, and parts of Saturday Night Fever give some idea as to the breadth of his mastery.
The Conversation slips right in there in terms of period and genre, but is, of course, a very different classic to a movie about a New York subway train getting hijacked or social tensions in Brooklyn at the height of the disco era. While largely focused on piano solos, we also get late night dance floor jazz, tense drone, and moody avant-garde, just in case the on-screen action wasn't brooding enough already.

Review: Howard Shore is well known for some of the most riveting soundtracks to dramatic movies the last 30 plus years. Many consider him to be one of the most important movie composers in the last half century. And his credits are impressive to say the least. Included are music for Lord of the Rings, Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia, Aviator, The Score and many, many more. Not to be outdone, is the soundtrack for the cult classic Se7en starring Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman. Coming in a beautifully designed gatefold and pressed on blue and teal marbled vinyl 2xLP that also comes with an insert. An amazing package, fitting for an amazing soundtrack.

Four decades after first release it remains a classic of the genre that Mondo, Backlot Music and Howe Records now serve up for the first time ever on vinyl. It was produced by Howard Shore and Alan Frey and comes on original artwork by Rich Kelly, with great liner notes by Annette DiGiovanni and pressed on 180 g vinyl. It is a futuristic and cinematic work that has more than stood the test of time.

Review: Australian singer-songwriter Sia - formerly the voice of chill maestros Zero 7 - is a real pop gem who directed and co-wrote the musical film Music. She penned 10 new tunes for the occasion, with the best of them making the cut here next to songs inspired by the film such as the Dua-Lipa co-written 'Saved My Life.' Largely pop in style with undercurrents of electropop, reggae, EDM and R&B, these are accessible songs that bounce with joy and exuberance. The title track in all its sweeping cinematic glory will likely be the standout for many.

Review: If you're unfamiliar with Yugoslavia-era Croatian animated children's entertainment than where have you been? And, please, allow us some introductions. Produced for 11 years, between 1967 and 1978, Professor Balthazar was a kids show about a benevolent genius scientist (the titular star) who helps those around him overcome various problems, often through the use of invention, using a magical machine to come up with innovative designs to solve any issue. While there is certainly subtext to read into - TV has always been a bastion of propaganda, not least behind the Iron Curtain of yore - trying to pinpoint the location or origin here isn't easy, if you don't already know. No character speaks a discernible language, making this resolutely universal storytelling. Similarly, the soundtrack, by Balkan master Tomislav Simovic, is relentlessly shapeshifting and expressive, and impossible not to fall in love with, no matter where you grew up.

Review: Tomislav Simovic was among the most significant musical masters to emerge in post-World War II Yugoslavia. The Croatian artist was a member of several jazz bands over the years, is considered a pioneer of southern European electronic music, a highly respected musical theorist, commentator, and all-round visionary. During his lifetime, he would score 300 films, many of which are lost to the sands of time, and those that did survived, or were recreated by new artists, are considered examples of soundtrack as art. Few answer that call better than this previously unreleased collection of 18 short animated films from the Zagreb school, which positioned itself as an artistic institution concerned with presenting philosophical world views and changing the course of animated history. Simovic's work, even without the visuals, conveys this brilliantly, with a mixture of whimsy, comedy, contemporary songwriting, and grand arrangements.

It's a sure sign Son Lux are in the premier league now, and following the release of the soundtrack comes the official score, presented across four extended suites taking up whole sides of vinyl. This limited gatefold black and white pressing of the album gives the striking sonics the release they deserve.

Review: Nine specially remastered tracks by Sonic Mayhem and Jer Sypult, pressed onto heavyweight discs, from the original soundtrack of the videogame Quake II. Set in a dystopian future world in which an alien race known as the Strogg capture and convert deceased humans as fuel for their horrific war machine, this is first-person shooter music to the max. The bulk of the soundtrack was created by Sascha Dikiciyan aka. Sonic Mayhem, as his first game project among an enviably long credits list. Having caught id Software's ear with an unofficial Quake album (alongside production partner Dave Valencia), Sonic Mayhem went on to develop Quake II's trademark aggro-industrial metal sound, inspired in part by Metallica. The killer riffs, repeated for effect, urge players forward through the Strogg city and beyond, a trail of gibs in their wake.

Review: One of Giuliano Sorgini's finest and most sought-after titles, Scappo Per Cantare, is finally available as an official LP reissue, and the first ever to be remastered from the original tapes. Originally released in 1971 on the small library music imprint FAMA - which operated as a sub-label of RCA Italy - the record contains the original music written for Scappo Per Cantare, a small, pseudo-psychedelic 'musicarello' (musical comedy film) broadcast on RAI television. Despite this seemingly innocuous commission, the music - though he's uncredited, it was made in collaboration close confidant Alessandro Alessandroni - is incredibly surreal, and a psychedelic treat for anyone seeking crisp, chordophonal-compositional mastery distilled on record.

Review: Dean Honer and Kevin Pearce - a pair of musicians and critics enmeshed in the British music landscape since day dot - grew so sick of the manufactured children's songs they'd heard on vinyl and CD over the years that they decided to create their own version, albeit with a twist. 'The Sound Of Science' is a tongue-in-cheek rendition of this unique utility music format, designed to bypass its tendency to quickly "become a form of torture" for the adults in each other's families. Instead, this album is fun for both the kids and the parents, with science and astronomy forming the bulk of its themes.

Review: Photographer Nan Goldin captured snapshots of inner-city queer sexuality like no other. Famous for her visual chronicling of LGBT subcultures in New York throughout the 1970s and 80s, her work focused on escapism within the real - walking the tightrope of sexual ecstasy over beds of real danger: the twin epidemics, HIV/AIDS and opioid. Film material about her work up until now has largely been limited to the slideshow 'The Ballad Of Sexual Dependency', but 2023 changed that with the documentary film 'All The Beauty And The Bloodshed', which biographically documents Goldin's life and career, homing especially in on her lengthy fight with the orchestrators of the opioid epidemic, the Sackler family. The soundtrack to the film, composed by international experimental sound art group Soundwalk Collective, in collaboration with Dawn Sutter Madell - is an intense, almost heavenly orchestral suite, yet is no less cinematic or righteous. It's tinged with the mood of tearing down an oppressive, parasitic pharmaceutical structure, not least one which still financially feeds the arts world with bloodstained hands.

Review: Given the erotic subtexts to many of his films, it clearly didn't take much to seduce acclaimed director Ingmar Bergman. But that was more than fine for synth duo Sparks, who by August 2009 had become so enamoured with the director's work as to theme a whole album around him. Imagining a hypothetical trip to Hollywood, the album hears the strange duo embark on a synthy rock-operatic odyssey across four sides and at least 20 tracks; their first to do so.

Review: Canadian saxophonist, multi-instrumentalist and frequent collaborator of Arcade Fire, Bon Iver and most recently post-metal juggernauts Cult Of Luna; Colin Stetson isn't your standard film composer, nor is 2018's cerebral psychological family horror Hereditary your standard frightfest. Stetson's droning brass and avant-garde compositions may add layers of mercurial dread to filmmaker Ari Aster's bleak visuals but when isolated, the pieces take on entirely new life of caustic, crawling atmospherics which swell to nauseating degrees before spiralling into frenzies of twisted modern classical imbued jazz, complete with bursts of warped brass and psychotic strings coalescing into truly hellish soundscapes.

Review: You can trust Music On Vinyl to put out the very best soundtracks, from the least likely sources. That Blade Runner soundtrack reissue a few years back was an absolute treat for us, to cite an example, but this edition of the Call Me By Your Name soundtrack is even more leftfield. After all, it's no surprise because the film had an insanely on-point score that never made it onto vinyl format; songs from the likes of John Adams, Giorgio Moroder and Franco Battiato are a wonderful thing to own on wax, within the concept of this remarkable movie, alongside other great tunes from coveted producers like Japan's Ryuichi Sakamoto. All in all, a fine catch.

Review: For many young film lovers today, Call Me By Your Name might have just been their first ever experience of homosexuality represented on film. It also put heartthrob Timothee Chalamet on the map, so it's not a film without its dues owed to it. Few still know of the star-studded cast of soundtrack pieces cobbled together for the film, in some cases commissioned, in others licensed from prior recordings. Notably, original compositions from the likes of Sufjan Stevens and Ryuichi Sakamoto make up the atmospheric bulk of it, largely centring on hauntingly beautiful piano pieces tempered by transitional voices and well-controlled rooms. Elsewhere come a smattering of romantic, synthy, Euro classics from FR David's 'Words' Franco Battatio's 'Radio Varsavia'.

Lucifer Rising: A Reimagined Soundtrack

Track 1 (10:03)
Track 2 (10:36)
Review: .As the release notes here explain, countless greats have attempted to create their own score of the cult 1980 movie Lucifer Rising, Kenneth Anger's 29-minute meditation on faith, belief, and the corruption of minds through ritualistic practices. According to Studio Kosmische "some, including myself, will see this new rescore as an act of sacrilege; all I can say is that it was created in awe of, and with great respect to, everyone involved in the original work(s)." Thanks to the spontaneous recording process, which reflects the non-linear and waking-dream nature of the film, the music here genuinely feels as though it has a life of its own, existing only in the space in which it was created. So all we're actually hearing are distant echoes of that. An otherworldly, ambient, spiritual, beautiful, tense, building, singular movement that proves inescapable in the end.

Review: The second in a two-part remake by Square Enix of the landmark best-selling video game Final Fantasy VII, this revamped and rejuvenated title - Rebirth - is set to represent the latter half of one of the best video games of all time in a manner never experienced or experienceable before. Much in the same way as the remade game itself, the new soundtrack compiles the efforts of several of the game studio's brightest musical sparks, restarting all of the game's best themes and motifs from scratch. Directed by music supervisor Kenji Kawamori, the soundtrack is a soaring uplifter, and a perfect complement to the futuristic, sublime, mercenary anti-corporatist story arc of the game.
