Review: Jamal Moss, aka Hieroglyphic Being, returns this time under the alias Africans with Mainframes. With fellow Chicagoan Noleian Reusse they have been releasing music under the name Africans with Mainframes for over 15 years now. The KMT LP is the debut album from the group, a collage of apocalyptic Chicago acid meets industrial and transcendental post-house machine funk. Both intense and unique, the album of forward-thinking, experimental, boundary-pushing Afro-futurist electronic music shows why Hieroglyphic Being is regarded as one of the most serious purveyors of experimental electronic music today.

Review: Under the NHK yx Koyken alias, Japanese producer Kouhei Matsunaga has made some of the most arresting experimental techno of recent times. Here he lands on DFA following acclaimed releases on L.I.E.S, Computer Club and DFA. Interestingly, he's used this second full-length excursion to largely step away from the dancefloor - a couple of tough-as-teak outsider techno workouts aside - instead diving headfirst into the world of fuzzy electronic experimentation. As a result, the eight showcased cuts are even wonkier, weirder and more imaginative than his previous work, touching on drone, Autechre style IDM, PAN-style modular oddities and noise-laden industrial soundscapes. Expect to be challenged and entertained in equal measure.

Review: Melbourne's Nice Girl (real name Ruby Kerkhofs) has been of the Public Possession family for four years. In that time, she's released a handful of admirable singles and a pair of albums that showcase her distinctive, attractive and well-crafted take on house music. On Yummy, her third full-length, Kerkhofs continues on this theme, bouncing between autotune-sporting electronic colour (the blissful 'Walk In Walk Out'), heady and hypnotic, techno-tempo beauty ('Departure'), deep synth-pop ('My Feeling'), sun-splashed, saucer-eyed lusciousness ('Sonething'), sparkling electronic ambience ('Take a Break', '49'), cheeky nu-disco ('Watcha Do') and high-octane boundary-blurring cheeriness ('Yummy'). Best of all, though, is the techno-meets-progressive house joy of killer closing cut 'Pot Red').

Review: Given that Ninos Du Brasil's 2014 album on Hospital Productions, Novos Misterios, was such an intense, mind-altering thriller, hopes are naturally high for this belated follow-up. The genius of that set lay in the Italian duo's dizzying fusions of densely layered Batacuda drums, wild post-punk vocals, sticky sound effects and dark, feverish electronics. Wisely, they've retained the same blueprint on Via Eterna, sprinting through heady tribal workouts, macabre techno soundscapes, thrash-Batacuda scream-alongs, hypnotic late night throb-jobs, rolling percussion tracks and nightmarish compositions that seemingly draw on all of the above. One track even sounds like a dystopian take on the Pet Shop Boys Brasil-inspired album, Bilingual. In other words, Ninos Du Brasil is still a thrillingly unique proposition.

Review: Nitechord is an enigmatic ambient-tech duo that makes a striking debut here with Lume having previously released only two remixes. It was a demo tape from 2022 that impressed the Past Inside the Present label with its raw allure and it is that work which appears here nearly unaltered but for mastering from James Bernard. The opener unfolds with atmospheric guitar loops anchored by a steady kick and bass, 'Near' brings a hint of twang to expansive guitar tones and in 'Dim,' layered drones and melodies rise and fall like petals. Add in the suspensory sounds of 'Absent' and 'Carry' which blooms into a full orchestral swell and you have an immersive, introspective suite of sonic bliss.

Review: Nitzer Ebb are back with a "Best Of" compilation "Body Of Work 1984-1997" on Mute and "Body Rework: Remixes", the accompanying collection of remixes from contemporary artists and DJs inspired by the band's proto-techno industrial legacy. "Body Rework" sees such Ebb classics as "Control (I'm Here)", "Join In The Chant", "Murderous" and "Let Your Body Learn" remixed by the likes of Black Strobe, Xpress 2, Derrick May, The Hacker, Phil Kieran, Thomas Heckmann, Robag Wruhme, Terence Fixmer and Motor into updated electronic versions of their industrial blueprint.

Review: In interviews, Alessio Natalazia has freely stated his next album would be "very different" and "very intense". That album, his first for Powell's Diagonal stable, has finally arrived, and it's as ballsy, robust and full-throttle as he promised. While it contains nods to the woozy, shoegaze and ambient influenced soundscapes that have been a feature of his previous full-length excursions, these are well hidden behind clandestine fusions of techno and industrial, surging EBM-influenced workouts, post punk-goes-post rock explorations and atmospheric analogue electronics. For those well versed in his back catalogue, Animals makes for arresting listening. As for newcomers, they'll also find much to enjoy throughout.

Voices From The Lake (CD)

Review: Voices From The Lake is the first full-length collaboration between Italian techno producers Donato Dozzy and Neel. The album was recorded last summer in Rome, before being previewed as a live show at a wooded mountainside festival in Japan. This detail is perhaps crucial. Throughout, Voices From The Lake feels surprisingly 'live', given its almost entirely electronic contents. There's a fluidity to the rhythms and a green, organic tinge to the musty, atmospheric sounds that flit between the speakers. It's minimal, yes, but there's a strange warmth to proceedings. It's not cold and icy - an accusation often leveled at atmospheric techno - but rather pleasingly cosy.
