Dead Hush (12")
Cat: BROS 006. Rel: 12 Nov 14
AD\\HH - "Dead Hush"
AD\\SS - "Security Breach"
AD\\DC - "Sonic Erosion"
Review: By now you should be more than familiar with the concept central to the Brothers label, which has seen a succession of techno artists collaborating with like minded contemporaries. Mancunian techno brutalists AnD are the main players on this latest edition, swiftly following up that LP for Electric Deluxe with a 12" of joint productions featuring Headless Horseman, Sunil Sharpe and D Carbone. Though typically dystopian in sound, there's an element of restrain to the opening HH hookup "Dead Hush", whilst the nicely swung rhythms make a change from the relentless techno thud. On the flip Sunil Sharpe leads AnD down a mind bending acid wormhole on "Security Breach" whilst REPITCH artist D Carbone turns matters towards straight up warehouse techno on the finale "Sonic Erosion".

SCREAM (Sharif Laffrey Nightwork)
SCREAM
Review: Discos Capablanca dig into the undergrowth of German acid culture to unearth ADSX, otherwise known as Andre Fischer. An electronic music lifer since the 80s in Frankfurt, Fischer has avoided the limelight but been involved in all manner of movements. His ADSX (or Audiosex) alias was responsible for some serious acid heat back in the 90s, and it's revived here alongside former Tresor and Snax DJ Hanoben. "Phone Sex" is a dense and trippy freakout, while "Acid Sex" takes a lean and mean approach with the 303 front and centre. On the B side, resurgent Detroit champion Sharif Laffrey gets busy with a remix of "Scream" that stretches out over 12 minutes in his usual heavy-loaded, feverish and utterly on-point style.

Review: The Hardfloor label's new release '707' features Spanish producers Andres Gomez and Andreas Lundman carrying the torch for the Hardfloor sound, old school meeting new school. Jackin' acid-tweekin' filth backed by a tune from the Hardfloor boys themselves, which showcases their unique ability to make a 303 bounce and funk like crazy!

Cat: BROS 002. Rel: 24 May 13
AW & PB - "209"
AT & HE - "Liars Go Astray"
Review: It may be a slight shift down in gears from the Brothers' first sonic ear-bashing, which saw the biologically linked Truss and Tessela supply the fizzing hot "UC" alongside Andrew and Dimitry of AnD and Tom Dicicco's monstrous "Multiple Visions", but BROS002 sees the label continue to canvas UK techno's all-embracing reach of industrial and experimental styles. A new cast of all-caps headline this second missive, which sees the label maintain it's sub rosa approach to releasing music. It's since been made known however that AW\\PB, aka Perc and Sync24 supplied the heated "209", while the Cassegrain duo, aka AT\\HE deliver "Liars Go Astray" - both of which furtively skirt between raw and steroid-injected electro and pulsating club techno.

Highfield Casuals - "Highfield Daze" (7:09)
Natureboy Gold - "Prozac Test" (7:53)
Steven Simpson - "Qaua" (7:12)
Review: Scottish label Craigie Knowes are back with Knowes Universal Broadcast: Seg 1. Considering the likes of local heroes Vince Watson and Stephen Brown; we know the Scots have knack for hi-tech soul and this release does not disappoint. Starting out with "Baltra" then the epic acid odyssey "Fade Away", we then get treated to the soulful and emotive electro of Highfield Casual's "Highfield Daze" which will appeal to fans of Gerald Hanson or Gerald Donald without a doubt. On the flip Natureboy Gold (what a name!) serves up "Prozac Test" which is reminiscent of Laurent Garneier's acid epics of the mid noughties; you can't beat that for a compliment can you? Finally "Qaua" by Stephen Simpson closes the release out in sublime and dubby deep house territory; loving' it! Tip!

Cat: CB 02. Rel: 12 Mar 18
BFTT - "Public/Private"
Lack - "Absent"
Chekov - "Celeste"
Howes - "Untitled"
Review: Cong Burn made a mighty splash with its first release, clearly flaunting the kind of wares you'd expect to hear from Livity Sound alumni or other such esteemed techno renegades. The second installment is no slouch either, featuring a new cast of crooked creators offering up their wares for the modern mutant dancefloor. BFTT has a weighty low end thrum powering "Public/Private", while Lack takes things in a scuffed and nimble direction. Chekov pushes out into more experimental pastures with the broken beats and displaced sound design of "Celeste" and Howes creates a wonderful strain of mystical deep house for darkened souls. Each one of these tracks is loaded with flair and personality, yards ahead of your average generic knock offs and presenting something with real merit to the convoluted world of dance music.

Bicep & Hammer - "Icebowl" (4:59)
Bicep & Hammer - "Day 3" (6:30)
Review: By their standards, 2014 has been a relatively quiet year for Belfast boys Bicep, with a remix 12" and the Circles EP on Aus Music their only releases of note. "Lyk Lyk" is, then, a welcome return to action. The title track is particularly sweaty and once again mines vintage rave influences, with fluid synths and cut-up vocals riding a classic late '80s/early '90s breakbeat groove. "Poly Pineapple" is a little deeper, with waves of wide-eyed synths crashing over a thumping house groove. On the flipside, the duo join forces with partner-in-blogging Hammer for a couple of cuts; the woozy, glacial, synth-heavy "Icebowl" and "Day 3", a stomping chunk of retro-futurist techno smothered in 808 State style synths. Balearic techno anyone?

Stojche - "The Exchange" (Gian Hydrocity Refix) (5:40)
Review: Blackhall & Bookless have been pursuing a fantastic strain of house and techno via their Jaunt label for many moons now. They're back and celebrating 10 years with a series of fantastic remixes that highlight the scope of their artistic vision, and that of those close to them. Inland leads in with an oceans deep version of the label bosses' "Spirit", which is smartly followed up by Jonas Kopp's equally submersive take on Hiver's "Itria". Jasper Wolff and Maarten Mittendorff lets the swooning "Meandering Rivers" by Kaelan burst its banks and fill out an expansive landscape, while Stojche pings Gian's "The Exchange" out into an electro-speckled cosmos.

Hydergine - "Mystic Light" (6:11)
Hydergine - "Lunar Eclipse" (7:32)
Review: Lempuyang's third offering is an outstanding split release between Steve O'Sullivan & Hydergine, label bosses for Mosaic/Bluetrain & Ranges. In 'Binary Riddim' Steve delivers a two-part dub track spanning >13 minutes, seriously heavy in the low end; melancholy strings in the first half, progressing to outright menacing chord stabs in the latter. A versatile track offering something for both warm-up and the dancefloor. Complimenting on the flip are 'Mystic Light' and 'Lunar Eclipse' from Hydergine. Deep, dubby atmospherics meander over a weighty 909 kick on B1. Subtle minimalism a la Terrence Dixon, pitched down on B2. Essential release!

BNJMN - "Dive"
Delta Funktionen - "Petrol"
Herva - "Radio's Mutterings"
Bleak - "Keep Me Close"
John Beltran - "Return To Nightfall"
Review: Dutch label Delsin's 100th release celebrations continue, albeit in a typically understated fashion, on this fifth instalment. BNJMN's beautiful but brief opener "Dive" sets the scene for the release as does the dreamy but serene "Radio's Mutterings" by Herva. While the pace picks up on Delta Funktionen's "Petrol", a fusion of robust broken beats and dreamy chords, the overall tone here is mellow and melodic. This is audible on Bleak's "Keep Me Close", where dubbed out drums and a trancey bass prevail, and on the standout track from John Beltran. The US producer may be known primarily for his home-listening sounds, but on "Return to Nightfall" he copper-fastens his dreamy, melodic textures to a pulsing, hypnotic groove.

Henry Greenleaf - "Snide" (4:59)
Formant Value - "Polycausa" (7:03)
Review: Well Street keep up the heat as one of the most inventive labels operating in the liminal space between techno, dub and rhythmic mysticism. These various artist releases are also a perfect introduction to some essential new talent, and that's clear from the off with the snaking, echo chamber pressure of Box 5ive. Keppel's "Taken For Granted" is a distinctive slice of crooked 21st century soul that sports a whiff of early Kimbie / Blake in the vocals and overall attitude. Henry Greenleaf's "Snide" is a taut drum track that teases as much as it delivers, and Formant Value trips out into a meditative soundscape of pattering percussion and spacious atmospherics.

Review: The Bassiani label is the platform for the infamous Georgian club to present its sound to the wider world, and it does so in fantastic fashion with this run of various artist releases. This fourth release kicks off with the dark, textured and brilliantly rendered techno immersion of Cassegrain's "Departure Seven", while Ersatz Olfolks gets a little more heated with the strafing synth work that courses out of "Straight Road". Hector Oaks is also in a rowdy frame of mind with the peak time belter "Move In Circles, Walk On Lines", and it's down to Thomas Hessler to cool things off with the heart-rending electro of "Memories".

Review: Given that their friendship began when both were up-and-coming DJs making their way on the Bristol scene, this first collaborative 12" from Shanti Celeste and Hodge has been a long time coming. It's a reflection of how far they've come that the EP is undoubtedly one of the most talked-about of 2019 so far. Opener "Alula" is particularly potent, with weighty tropical drums and sparse, humid melodies rising above soundsystem-bordering sub-bass. Elsewhere, there's an endearingly dreamy, loved-up and saucer-eyed feel to the dream house/broken techno fusion of "Pips" (listen out for some of Shanti's trademark vocalizations) while "Soba" is a little more hectic, off-kilter and percussive whilst still retaining the same sense of tropical heat that permeates the entire EP.

At the A2 London's Doppelate makes their Cong Burn debut with an elegant tech-house roller. Moonside Playground (Alexander Kowalski remix)
Review: A forgotten gem from 1996, "Moonside Playground" was an early step out for both Sammy Dee and Heiko Laux when it appeared on the latter's Kanzleramt imprint. Making the most of a chillingly simple synth line and the hypnotic powers of techno, Laux has revisited the track, shifted the groove around and neatly beefed up the drums to make it gel more neatly with contemporary fare without losing any of the atmosphere. Label regular Alexander Kowalski meanwhile takes a more minimalist approach, submerging the iconic chords and throwing down a mean tempered beat that sits heavy over everything else, only to let the track swell up at the appropriate time

Review: The always on-the-money Run Out Run label boomerangs itself back onto our shelves with their seventh release, this time a split effort from a pool of techno juggernauts form around the globe. Label boss Tom Dicicco drops a heavy-loaded master blaster in "16 Reels" - fierce sonics and filtered beats sprawling from every angle - and TX Connect aka Dallas-based producer Gavin Guthrie delivers his usual slice-n-dice approach thanks to an artillery of gritty drum machine beats and bubbly, rolling melodies on "Clouds Like Leopards". Kinda Kickin' (Efdemin remix)
Review: There is a simple yet cunning concept to the Petite sub-division of Gent label Curle that continues to pay dividends; forgotten gems from house and techno past get fully relicensed and reissued backed with a contemporary remix. The 2010 reissue of Walt J's "Reborn" was a particular highlight thanks to the "DJ Qu's Journey Towards Birth" reinterpretation Curle secured. The first Petite release in 3 years draws for the one DJ Boom production Matthew Herbert and Charles Webster completed back in 1999, the ultra deep "Kinda Kickin", and pairs it up with a remix from Efdemin. It's a good match with Phillip Solman retaining that distinctive vocal hook whilst implementing the kind of textural detail which made this year's Efdemin LP Decay so memorable.

Review: As the excellent Kern series from Tresor hits its second installment via DJ Hell, so the welcome vinyl sampler drops with some rare gems lovingly reissued for a fresh set of ears. Jonas Kopp's "X" sounds as taut and deadly as ever, displaying the true meaning of minimalism across a barren soundscape, while Capracara's utterly sexy acid house jam "Flashback '86" shows just how erotic a 303 bassline can be. Independance Ave Orchestra - "Welfare"
Review: ** REPRESS ** A seventh release on Proibito arrives and it finds label boss Anthony Naples switching things up as the full artist approach is cast aside in favour of some posse gathering tactics. Label regulars Hank Jackson and Huerco S both feature (the latter under his newly helmed Independence Ave. Orchestra pseudonym) and they are joined by Proibito debutants Alex Falk and Jackson Lee - both of whom have priors for Proper Trax and Mystical Disco respectively. "Mitsuda" by Falk is a strange, ghostly slab of techno characterised by odd phasing and the occasional gurgle of stretched tape, whilst "Mongoos" from Hank Jackson keeps it weird but turns the mood towards something a lot frostier. On the B Side "Sumba Togola" from Jackson Lee mangles up all manner of vocal samples amidst a twisting groove of manipulated bass lines and unpredictable drum programming whilst the glistening "Welfare" suggests Huerco S is using the Independence Ave. Orchestra name to show a different aspect of his productions skills.

Christian Fischer vs The Galan Picx - "Lights Go Down In Germany"
Review: Probably the best Definite release to date, this EP is bound to cause an uproar as Christian Fischer, Leipzig's synonym for inventive techno, dishes up an utterly delectable four tracker, all of which are the spot-on. The "Clubtech EP" opens with "I Know", a melancholic, slightly trancey anthem that drives the people beyond their usual selves as they delve into the wide spheres and sad lusting vocals courtesy of English producers, Hybrid, known for their monumental multi-instrumental take on nu-breaks. A track that's so full of grandeur it hurts. "Advanced Panorama" opens like a huge window to Christian’s soul. Deep, infective, layered and intricate like a meandering landscape, full of psychoactive bleeps, belches, and blimps. A trancey melodic trip, set adrift on memory bliss, that slowly grows into obscure electro mayhem. "Clubtech" is more basic, more down to earth, a real winner on the dancefloor as it's straightforward electro-house action with a driving groove and a gripping breakdown that lets the hair stand on end. The EP closes with the huge "Germany", a really great vocal track powered by the energetic poetry of Leipzig-based band, The Galanpix, who give this driving electro-house smasher a face. And it surely is one you can't get out of your head!

If you class yourself as a Perc Trax completist and have already invested in the 2CD edition you should know what to expect from the four tracks here but those vinyl purists out there will enjoy those first few moments when the cuts are fresh on your 1210 and fresh in your mind. Review: Clearly Magical Voyage, The Hacker's recent Italo indebted EP for Tigersushi has piqued the legendary French producer's interest in revivalist material away from his familiar electro heavy sound. Whilst trace elements of The Hacker's sound are still more than apparent on "Shockwave", the track is an obvious homage to the 90s acid techno sound pioneered by R&S Records (when J Beltram and not J Blake was the figurehead). Gesaffelstein, a compatriot heavily indebted by The Hacker's electroclash era output, is a wise choice to remix the track given his continuing popularity and Different should also be commended for enlisting Altern8's Mark Archer to flip the track into a potent rave ready concoction of original break beats and acid house motifs.

Haddon - "Not Coming To The Club Tonight"
Howes - "Untitled"
L Pearson - "PSR1170"
Perfume Advert - "Dyn Horizontal Multiburst"
Review: Cong Burn is a new label that features a range of producers plying a more interesting twist on the standard deep house formula. Take opening case in point Haddon, who uses oodles of processing to create a slippery, shifting tripper out of "Not Coming To The Club" and instantly stepping aside from the run of the mill milieu. Howes then pops up with the snaking, ultra-deep electro abstractions of "Untitled". L Pearson is in a particularly cheeky mood with the scratchy micro-sampling fun of "PSR1170", calling to mind the crafty chops of Paradroid et al, and then Perfume Advert book end the release with some beautifully horizontal deep house for the subliminally minded to revel in.

Screamer
Review: Another monster release by Tom Hades - already charted by Carl Cox at No 2! 'Eclectic Twist' will certainly make the fans of Dahlbäck, Boys Noize or Tiefschwarz happy as it will turn upside down electro-house dancefloors worldwide. A future hit for sure! 'Askayum' builds up rather gently, but will blow away your crowd in the same way. 'Screamer' sounds different - dreamy, a little trancy - but is really beautiful. Perfect to close this great EP.

Buried Answers (Jamie Blanco remix)

Literate (Tiago Team Fumo remix)
Review: Not An Animal Records was formed in 2015 out of the ashes of the London-based party Bad Passion, and has thus far welcomed the likes of Man Power, Ess O Ess and Eric Duncan to release on the label. Now they turn to James Hadfield, a relatively new producer previously spotted on To Rack & Ruin and Me Me Me. On this four-tracker he deals in brooding synthwave tones mixed with classic jack track rhythms. "Literate" is just the kind of taut, sinister club creeper we can't get enough of, while "Buried Answers" takes a skippier but no less moody approach. On the remix front, Jamie Blanco takes the prize, turning "Buried Answers" into a bombastic slice of driving synth pop.

Review: REPRESS ALERT: In an age of over-information, it's refreshing to see Aurora Halal take her time with the Mutual Dreaming label, which notches up just its third release since launching in 2014. It's also the New York scene leader's first record in three years, and it's worth the wait. Some elements are familiar - Halal still has a keen instinct for heavy-hearted synth lines shaped out in bold curves, but the level of expression going into these tracks makes each one stand out like a striking painting. From the eerie mood of "Fattal 22" to the crunchy bleep workout "Nasty II", the character just oozes out of Halal's productions. With a remix from Wata Igarashi thrown into the mix as well, this is a record loaded with fresh and powerful takes on techno.

Review: Shapeshifter is the second EP by Aurora Halal, artist and creator of NY's Mutual Dreaming parties & the Sustain-Release festival. The EP dives deeper into the unique sound world introduced by last year's Passageway, its 5 tracks a deftly conjured ride through liquid emotive states. Shimmering waves of dark hypnotic energy rise and fall, evoking both synthetic plasmoid menace and soft sighing warmth, all brought to life by Halal's nuanced and rapidly evolving sound design.

Third Lucas (5:50)
Review: The latest release on Dutch label Will & Ink comes from one of its founders, Yaleesa Hall, and recent arrival Nick 'Malin' Putman. Lucas is similar in style to previous releases on the label, but it pushes farther in a loopy direction. "First Lucas" is a rolling, tracky affair, littered with disco riffs and reminiscent of a heavy take on Thomas Melchior's house sound. "Second Lucas" meanwhile sees the pair follow a similar route, but on this occasion, wired frequency drops and tonal shifts replace the disco elements. Finally, "Third Lucas" sees the duo deliver a more steppy rhythm, the dense drums still underpinning the swinging arrangement.

Review: Malin Genie's distinctive take on house and techno has already earned him spots on some of the contemporary scene's most vital labels, from Hypercolour to Will & Ink, and now his self-titled label throws the doors open to welcome in a likeminded individual with a similar instinct for unconventional approaches to 4/4 dynamics. Yaleesa Hall has already built up a strong identity on Will & Ink, and in partnership with Genie the results are nothing short of spellbinding. From the shimmering dubby tones of "Coronal Loop" to the submerged ruminations of "Oganesson," this is advanced dance music engineered to twist your synapses and shake your limbs in the most unpredictable of ways.

Stocha
Review: The sixth installment on Malin Genie's self-titled label welcomes Will & Ink resident Yaleesa Hall into the fold. Regular collaborators Malin and Yaleesa have turned out plenty of joint 12"s in the past on Will & Ink and this very label, and they sound more comfortable and sonically aligned than ever on this mighty record. There's no messing with "Alpha Decay," a loose and lysergic dubby techno workout. "Tachyon" orbits a similar soundworld, but shears the fat away for a minimal palette that sounds powerful echoing around the ample space in the mix. "Muck" slips into freaky after hours house territory, and "Stocha" drops a massive Basic Channel dub techno chord around a whisper of a beat to devastating effect.

Review: Scott Hallam has been an acid devotee since the early days, and he's largely put out his music on his own Axia label. While most of that is digital-only, now Cartulis have picked up on the considerable talents of this hardware lifer and presented five of his finest works on wax. The vibe veers tremendously, touching on dark and sinewy dungeon acid, boxy electro workouts, strangely psychedelic hardcore and plenty more besides. Hallam's style feels betrothed to the outboard approach - it's all synths and drum machines to these ears, and its immediacy is a big part of the charm. That, and the playful personality he works into those wigged out acid lines and pinging FX.

Review: On the third release by Hallucinator for Chain Reaction, the project refines their approach to repetitive music. Subtle rhythm and sound textures dominating this EP. Every single element gets explored to the edge of possibilities, but the closer you move the more fuzzy are the results you get. In sonic terms this means a rather rough, lo-fi alike sound aesthetic. Yet another interesting Chain Reaction release.

Review: Although Don't Be Afraid have had a busy year in 2013, adding DBA Dubs and DBA Special Editions to its label family, and issuing the Synthetes collection from Mr Beatnick, label owner Semtek has still found time to uncover some new talent in the form of unheralded Finnish producer Halvtrak. Little is known about the producer aside from a fondness for Chicago house, but the music on his debut Dust Under Bridges EP for DBA more than speaks for itself; opener "Finding Yourself" combines rumbling bass, searching chords and acidic textures in a Legowelt vein, while the frantic pace of "A Thousand Years" sounds almost UK funky-inspired. The dark melody and bubbling acid of "Barracuda" sees a return to restless sci-fi inspired melodies while "Face Two" delves into hypnotic 303 territory.
