  1. New Era (4:33)
  2. New Era (VIP mix) (4:34)
Review: The start of what many fans are hoping will eventually be an album later this year, Andy C let rip into 2016 with a brand new jump-up party track that smacks of "Twist 'Em Out" era jump up mischief (before things got a little too silly on that side of the genre). Now finally enjoying a vinyl outing, its ballsy sub matches the spiky riff with a dynamic that was seemingly written with wax in mind. The VIP is an interesting approach too; rather than being wilder than the original, it's actually deeper and more heads-down. Classic Andy C subversion... Let's hope it does build to an album.

  1. Overdose (5:55)
  2. Ultron (Mefjus remix) (4:49)
Review: Busta Rhymes has Flipmode, but Audio has Beastmode! After a slew of heavyweight albums on Virus, Audio is returning to the format with Beastmode forthcoming on the mighty RAM with this 12" sampler the first of many tasters. "Overdose" sets a high marker for the album, finding Audio returning with a brutish, rolling bassline, diced up with gritty drum loops and underpinned by quaking subs. Face down and Audio's signature RAM cut "Ultron" is given the Mefjus treatment, resulting in the sort of techy soundscape the Austrian producer reigns over. Mefjus moulds the original around the unfaltering guns of his peddled drums and wavering bassline.

  3. Intermission (Break remix) (5:58)
Review: Newcastle powerhouse Chroma come in from the cold and land a killer blow on Total Science's CIA label! The trio are no strangers to the CIA cause, having already supplied the label with 2013 high calibre 12" Intermission as well as remixing Total Science & S.P.Y. cut "Whoonga" last year, but Outline is some classy business. Opening up with the title track, Chroma head off into vintage junglist territory whilst showcasing their innate talent for catchy vocal edits, ear-bending mid basses and banging 808 subs. On the flip, the tight and heavy stepper "Hodrull" shares sides with a killer remix of the aforementioned "Intermission" from certified badman Break. Whilst Newcastle United may be currently mired in relegation woes, Chroma are flying high on this 12"!

Review: Commix returns: fresh from his Endian techno adventures, George Levings (now running solo ops) presents his first new D&B release in over four years. Has the wait been worth it? Immerse yourself into the deep rumbles, rolls and sound designs of "Generation" or the heavy meditative complexities of "Deepdubs" and the answer is clear... Yes, the wait has been worth it and it comes with the long awaited official release of Spectrasoul's remix of "Justified" to boot. Apparently there's a whole stack more in the Commix cannon too. Big yesses.

Review: Culture Shock releases are notoriously sparse... With upwards of a year passing between dispatches (and epic five-year hype times between ID clips of Ram boss Andy C playing them and them actually being finished and released) fans have learned to make hay while the sun shines. Like now... Originally released digitally in December, these four tracks are finally available on vinyl and every one of them is a thriller: from the Detroitian textures of the synths on "Tangents" to the all-out bull charge of "Steam Machine" and the vocal beauty of "No More", Shocky's sun is shining brightly right now. Review: Taken from their long-awaited debut album Paradise Lost, Ram roustabouts Delta Heavy deliver two distinct party bombs: "Oscillator" is a guttural growler with a staccato riff and tumbling tripletty drums and a second drop that shreds all the way up from Hades itself. "Fun House" shows the duo's more mischievous side as a post-jump-up riff licks with an atonal forked tongue over titanium beats. Immense.

Review: Delta Heaviness: this debut album has been on the cards since the UK duo signed to Ram in 2010 and they've not disappointed. Four of the 14 tracks, pressed to double 12", it's a sizzling synapse-snapping screenshot of where Ben and Si are at: feather-ruffling electrified bass, spatterings of rifle guitar blasts and beats so strong they could melt concrete. Climaxing with the hands-in-the-air vocal slap-down "City Of Dreams", each of these four cuts are primed for the peakest of peak hours. Delta Heaven.

Review: Synthesis is the fourth Digital album and it might be his most ambitious undertaking yet! The album's sixteen tracks see the UK producer working alongside a swathe of high profile contemporaries. The danger with projects such as this, is the lack of cohesion and binding theme but its clear Digital conceived Synthesis as a display of all that's good in the current scene. The first in a series of 12" samplers features Digital's Phantom Audio partner Spirit prominently; the pair team up for opener "Stolen Desire" and add the mighty Om Unit into the studio mixer on the deep and deadly "Skull". Flip it over and Nomine lands a hefty blow of junglist bliss alongside Digital with "Jungle Jaw" and the Niat collaboration "War" closes it out in style.

Review: An album so heavy in collaborative and sonic proportions, Digital's given us a week to recover between sessions. Part two continues the same broad-screen vein of creative form as we glide from meanie heads-down rollers ("Lost Life") to digidub halftime ("Rise") to raw tech grit ("Lightworks") before climaxing with the immense jazz swing of "Catch". Penned with Total Science, it's one of the most striking collaborations from the album due to the fact it sounds like neither party could create solo. Easily Digital's biggest project over his 25 year career, make sure you check the whole 16 track project.

Review: The fourth and final chapter of Digital's fourth album Synthesis: here we find yet more titanic collaborations with creative compadres far and wide. Nomine and Theory join the Ipswich artist for some straight-up amen-slapping jungle fun, "Primal" sees Digital team up with his longest standing partner in crime Spirit for some sledgehammer dark roll business while "Shadows & Dreams" is a more contemporary jam with an acidic hook and rim shots so sharp they could cut through bone. Finally "On My Head" hurls us back down to reality with a bump as dubby textures and more head-twisting drumwork remind us why Digital is held in such esteem in the first place.

Both lean and dubby, "Do One" carries one of those mix-friendly riffs on the intro that tease the cascading molten sounding drums (think "I'm A Creator" for 2016) and fit DRS's lyrics perfectly. All tribal and thumpy, "Doberman" is darker again. Ward 21's demonic mic command ensuring certified nightmare dancehall status. Woof woof.

  2. Rags
Review: D Bridge's Exit Records continues its boundary pushing endeavours within the confines of the drum & bass genre with this much anticipated collaborative release from Manchester based Dub Phixix and Skeptical. That anticipation is down to "Marka", surely one of the most forward thinking D&B tracks in recent times, and accompanied by a spookily suitable video that's clocked up half a million YouTube views in little under two months. Combining a half-step rhythm with warped bass growls, metallic lined woodblock snare hits and sinister atmospherics, it's nonetheless given its unique character by Strategy's menacing, dub leaning vocal contribution. "Rags" meanwhile proves to be just as vital, utilizing minimal percussive tics with vinyl crackle and sharp snares, teasing as it threatens to break into an all out assault. Highly recommended.

Review: Sublime retro future breaks from Keysound affiliate Etch. As suggested in the title, none of these breaks have real titles; it's just all about the crisp drum work, vast roominess and old school dynamics from the brushed drum swing of the first slice and the rubber ball bass of the second, right the way through the ghostly vocal tones and MC commands on the fourth slice, this is the sound of a man who knows his foundations inside out. Sneaker Social Club don't release anywhere near as much as they should.... But when they do you should always pay attention.

Review: A new Hidden Hawaii release has the ability to get our taste buds going and our mouths salivating from the first moment that we hear those warm glows of echo hit our ear drums. This is particularly true when it's coming from the likes of FLXK1 and DB1, two relatively unknown entities up to this day, and a pair of artists who truly understand the essence of dub techno. From the subaqueous bleeps and mechanical drums of "Track 1", through to the hollow, washed-out drones of "Track 2", and even contorted breakbeats of "Track 3" and "Track 4", this EP has everything you need for a full meditation session, whether that be in a club or on your headphones. No Apple buds, though, please.

Alicia Keys and Drake's "Unthinkable" gets the A-side with Alicia's voice working perfectly over the tempo and delicate piano emphasising her emotion. Meanwhile on the flip Jhene Aiko's "The Worst" enjoys some classic amen power with lavish synth washes and syrupy subs. The best.

Review: Longtime Headz affiliate and frequently Goldie's co-pilot in the studio, Heist returns to the label with his largest EP to date and its business from of the off as "Violent Rain" oozes Timeless era synth tones and drums so live and sweaty you can almost see the drummer's sweat coming from your speakers. Dig deeper for Heist's most versatile showcase in years: "In Pursuit" is all stripped back and slinky (think Enei but wider), "Sierra Mist" is a sci-fi stepper that nods towards Riya's soulful style, "Unauthorised Transmissions" is a cheeky underground squelcher, "Grebe" is thoroughbred alien funk with just a sly nod towards his more standard jump-up signature while "Ghost On My Shoulder" closes the show on a beautiful glitchy vibe that's somewhere between Culprate and Squarepusher. Properly unique, creative and immaculately produced, Heist has smashed it on this one.

Flipping between classical amen weaving and thundering halftime stomps, "Stakka" is Kenzo at his naughtiest and heaviest. Review: Monstrous tech from the leading label in neuro right now.... First up we find label bossman Jade teaming up with New Zealand herberts State Of Mind for the 1.21 gigawatt shock-out "Respirator". With a metallic dynamic to the bass that punches with singular and refuses to sustain and drown out the whole track, it punches with a refreshing energy. Spanish duo Dub Elements take care of the flip with a denser damager that comprises four basslines, each one carefully layered and positioned to create a clear but vicious punch.

Review: It's been years since John B last fronted a Headz release - 15 to be precise - but there is no other label these three tracks would be more at home on. Techstepping back to his earliest visions, "Lava" is a straight up spring back to 1998 in new trainers. Stark, grimy and heads-down, it pays homage to one of drum & bass's most innovative eras. "Lie To Me" reminds us of John's inability to sit still creatively with the jazzy, almost "Brand New Funk" style dynamics of "Lie To Me". Finally we hit "The Colossus". One of John's secret weapons since Sun & Bass 2015, it's an ugly piece of uncompromised machine funk with all the bass groans and cymbal splashing you could ever ask for. Arguably John's best release this decade.

Review: Mr Utopia returns to his spiritual home with four more forward-thinking sermons: "The Gully VIP" sees him giving 2015's underground thumper a toxic halftime treatment, stripped back the break and throwing it into a moody swagger with sudden flurries of breaks when you least expect them. "String Section" is a stark stepper with hardly an orchestra in sight, just raw sizzles of electricity running back and forth and a very subtle string line causing paranoid drama throughout. Finally "By Firelight" rolls with a really spacious design and polished bass textures that are reminiscent of a young Photek. It doesn't get much better than this.

Review: Wow, have we really had to wait five years for a new Mark System 12" on Warm Communications? Apparently so! You Gave Up My Love arrives with the Juno office stereo still giving Mark System's Final Approach LP for Exit some rotation and is a rather sublime slab of modern bass science. The title cut leads the way, pairing off the gentle vocals against the deep subs and enveloping basslines with instant classic results. Complementing this, the B side finds System squaring up against a Warm Comm classic in the shape of Fracture's "Tunnel Track" which flushes out the original's claustrophobic haze and lays down a luscious arrangement in its place whilst retaining some grit.

Review: Nomine returns from a short break after his debut album Inside Nomine. Clearly refreshed and motivated, this is a brand new label that he's launching with a new workshop/seminar event that climaxes with an all-out no-rules bass rave. It's some of his freshest music in a long time, too... "Nomine's Path" is a stark tribal affair with bold tub thumps and a frank spoken word sample, "Peace Please" and "Lost Girl" both look to north Africa for inspiration as Lustina's vocals add an eastern haze to the dense hypnotic blends. Finally we climax with "Nomine's Mantra", a resounding meditative chant-piece with sly flurries of sinewy acid and bulbous bass. Impeccable.

"Infection" is an unfettered neuro heads-down roller with bass textures that sound like they're made of pure electricity. Flip for the truly schizophrenic "Let It Go" where a jump-up dynamic is carried by a frazzled bass, truckloads of FX and drum rolls that teasingly go on for longer than they really should. Review: Neuro legends old and new: Optiv & BTK lead the charge with "Antimatter", a loose, funky example of toxic funk. Whether you focus on the extensive, tub-thumping rolls, the psy-like arpeggio or the twenty tonne bassline, there's so much detail in here you could get lost for days. Flip for a lesson from Ukraine duo Agressor Bunx as "Burn" shakes with a reece that's reminiscent of early Bad Company, drums that nod towards Misanthrop's methodology and a breakdown that guarantees some serious rabbit hole action. See you on the other side.

Shogun 100: Part 2 (heavyweight vinyl 12")
Cat: SHA 100EP2. Rel: 25 Apr 16
  1. Phace - "Mumbo Jumbo" (4:57)
  2. Joe Ford - "Time Is Limited" (5:32)
  3. SpectraSoul - "Glimpse" (feat Dbridge - Ivy Lab remix) (4:41)
  4. Proxima - "Sens8" (4:45)
Review: Friction's Shogun continues its centennial celebrations with four more wonderfully forward-thinking creations. Phace lets his hair down on "Mumbo Jumbo" where a grungy rolling groove provides deep layers and levels of dark funk. Joe Ford gets all cosmic and spacy with his Chords-style "Time Is Limited" while Ivy Lab buss up one of SpectraSoul's most delicate songs to date with subtle weight and spaciousness. Finally Proxima closes the show with alarmingly gritty halftime groove and a riff that sounds like the devil smashing up the church bells.

  1. Phaction - "Stratos" (Total Science remix) (5:19)
  2. Malaky, Satl & Silence Groove - "Skyfall" (6:23)
Review: More 20/20 goodness from longstanding Dutch imprint Fokuz. First up is a Total Science refix of Phaction's 2015 liquid vocal workout "Stratos" where the duo add more weight to the drums, space between the elements and big dubby plunges to the bass. Flip for a brand new original from label mainstays Malaky, Sati and Silence Groove. Blessed with breathy vocals, slinky drums and big washy textures, it's a great warm-up device that builds with cinematic effect throughout.

  2. GLXY - "I Want 2 VIP" (4:09)
  3. Northern Zone - "Soul Is Still The Same" (4:08)
Review: Belgian deep stable Limitless fix up for spring with two revisitations and a brand new original. First up Chris.SU takes the reins of Phase's 2013 gem "Walk Alone" adding a little scuffy, scratchy grit to the main bass riff. Currently hyped UK duo GLXY VIP the dickens out of last year's "I Want U 2" while German newcomer Northern Zone delivers a breezy stepper that's peppered with layers of cascading instrumentation and a powerful vocal sample. Beautiful.

  3. Your Love (2016 re-master) (5:59)
Review: Over two years have passed since Philth made his Dispatch debut with "Your Love". In that time he's torn new ones on a whole gamut of labels to develop a reputation as one of the UK's most reliable underground operators. Here we find him returning to Ant TC1's imprint with a fresh Wreckless collaboration: "The Circle" is a distortion-laden groaner that's anchored by a punctuated two-step and a wafts of ghostly sound design. Elsewhere the evangelistic tones and textures of "Your Love" enjoy a cheeky modern remaster and a subverted, barbed twist from the currently unstoppable SCAR.

Review: Released digitally a matter of months after their debut album, The Prototypes shunned the usual 'release a load of songs from the LP' attitude and flung out freshness. Electrified and rampant, it sums up just why the Brighton duo have risen to fame in the way they have these last few years. As does "Pop It Off". One of the most popular D&B tracks of 2015 full stop here it gets a new injection of VIP gulliness where the bassline is taken to deeper, leaner pastures. Never before pressed to vinyl, this one's special.

  1. Quadrant & NC 17 - "Dub Central" (4:33)
  2. NC 17 - "Only One Way Out" (5:20)
Review: The North American jungle assault continues as Dispatch welcome an old friend (Quadrant) and a new one (NC-17) for this powerful double-tracker. "Dub Central" is a lean warp-focused track where a pulsating bassline groans over the anchored kicks. NC-17 goes it alone for "Only One Way Out". Upping the savage factor a notch or two, there's more of a shred to the bass as it rips through the spectrum with a classic air of Renegade heaviness. Muscular.
