  1. Allied - "Nth Degree" (5:20)
  2. Allied & Lockjaw - "Flow State" (5:32)
Review: Concussion continues to its underground operations with two grunting 3am rollers from Brighton's Allied. Fresh from their Methlab adventures last year, here we find them in a distinct Dispatch mood with a understated sandpaper funk feel running throughout the dark groove. Flip for "Flow State", a heavier, grizzlier piece of work with dubbed out synths, infectious shakers and a bed of subs so thick and heavy you could feed a family of 10 off them for three years. Proper.

Review: It's a good time to be an Artificial Intelligence fan. Hot on the heels of their "Reprisal" EP on Headz they return to their Integral mothership for four more understated slices of golden drum & bass. "Ask Yourself" teases with shades of cut up vocal soul over a heavily textured groove and loose percussive elements while "True Colours" goes all-out dreamy with a string hook and vocal to die for. Deeper into the EP we chow for the barbed banquet of futurist soul that is "Waiting For" followed by the soothing stepper palette of "Holding Out". Truth.

Weird In Munich (limited 12")
Cat: CBR 025. Rel: 21 Aug 17
  1. Frolic In Brine (4:25)
  2. Further Peaks (4:19)
Review: Absolute technoid grit from Sam and Danny as they soundtrack a hairy weekend of studio experimentation in Munich. Curveballs to the bitter distorted end, there's a fluidity and not-sit-still-ability running throughout the two as the pair defenestrate convention and get hands on. The delightfully titled "Frolic In Brine" is a swampy piece of tribal acid-tinged rollage with a toxic bassline emerging midway while "Further Peaks" is a drone procession that refuses to quit as it doubles and folds in on itself with decaying, mesmerising effect. Not what you'd expect from either party, which makes it all the more exciting. Pass the brine.

  2. TMS Soundsystem - "160bp" (4:06)
  3. NGHT DRPS - "Timebomb Dub" (5:59)
  4. Radar Bird - "Execute" (6:13)
Review: Given their addiction to British style bass music - not to mention rhythm patterns from around the world - the Through My Speakers crew is not your average Berlin-based DJ/producer collective. That much is clear from this all-star EP. There's much to admire throughout, from the trap-with-bells-on dancefloor madness of "Ladies & Cash" by Bukez Finezt and the high-octane, shangan shake-goes-acid brilliance of TMS Soundsystem's "160bp", to the wobbly post dubstep/revivalist jungle fusion of Radar Bird's formidable EP closer, "Execute". Perhaps most impressive of all, though, is the dancefloor-focused future dub fuzziness of vowel-hater NGHT DRPS's "Timebomb Dub".

Review: Doom struck grooves from California stealth operator Conspired Within. Building on his impressive two-year discography once again, he returns to Loxy's Cylon with two more heavy pressure deep steppers. "Artifact" is all about the percussive hook that weaves in and out of the cavernous atmospherics, "Sightings" harbours even more space as the beats strip back to shimmering elements allowing the suspense and pure density of the textures to seep through. Unabashed darkness.

Review: Name a respected and innovative label on the deeper, more experimental side of bass and you bet your bottom bitcoin Crypticz has worked with them. Last spotted on Halogen's Vantage Points album (and before that 31) here we find him flexing a whole four piece on the structually sound Cosmic Bridge; "Forever" shatters and stutters with its percussion-rattling and sub shaking while "Shapes Of You" flips the coin for a much more sparse, meditative authentic dub experience. Elsewhere "The Crawler" fixes our focus on a solid block-thwacking snare so the details and atmospheres flicker in our peripheries. Finally "Spirit On" spirits us away with its pensive dense atmospheres and ambient undertones. Sublime.

  2. Stickybuds Guaranteed
Review: Breakbeat warriors Deekline and Ed Solo team up again, and this time they've gone for it. Not content with producing some of the nastiest, wobbliest breakbeat around, they've decided to turn their hand to drum & bass and another release on Jungle Cakes. Lead cut "King Of The Bongo" is a cheeky exercise in bootleg jump-up buffoonery - the sort of tune that boasts a grin a mile wide and a happy dancefloor to match. Flip "Stickybuds Guaranteed" opts for a slightly more old skool jungle approach, mashing up skankin' MC and familiar pop vocals. It goes without saying that both tunes feature stupidly heavy basslines.

  4. Second Wave (5:11)
Review: OG in the house! Delta returns to show us who's boss with four ruthless cuts from across the board. Reminding us why he's released on some of the most renowned and influential labels in drum & bass history (Creative Source, Reinforced, Dread, Nu Identity) each cut flexes in a different corner; "Dreaming From The Hip" is late night Bukem style cosmic b-boy funk, "Feel" is classic sci-fi mid 90s creepage while the mystic, off-beat funk of "Kundalini Serpent" is straight up unclassifiable. "Second Wave" brings a little ghetto class to the party for the finale with a Detroit style arrangement that bounces with a technoid glee. Keep 'em coming Delta.

Review: While the world and their dog continues to drop his last hit "UK" in myriad creative mixes, Dimension follows it up with more peak time heavyweight massiveness; "Generator" is a big sing-along set-finale with a pumped-funk bassline while "Beg & Borrow" tips a nod at peers MTA mates Chase & Status with a stern spoken word vocal and a dangerous tech-edged drop. Then we have the special vinyl-only ">>>>_Error". What a twist to the tale... This can't be slept on.

Review: MartianMan launches a brand new label Off-World Colonies and the mission statement is clear: to thrust as far and as deep into the cosmos with nothing but the power of breakbeats. To launch the label we have undercover agents DJ Gaff and Cityspeak who provide four timeless odysseys. "Technology" is all iced out and reminiscent of early Subtitles releases while "This Feeling" loosens up the drums again for a slinky space jam a la early Source Direct. "Dream Mechanics" is a much sharper, steppier flavour and "Skinjob" brings home the bacon at a cool 160. True to the craft.

"Frenzy" lives up to its name with its stabbed out riff and doubled drums while "Go!" paints from a Bizarre Inc-coloured palette with a big hook and showstopping switches. 4. Simplification & Translate - "Don't Forget" (5:06)
Review: With a title such as "The Vibe is Coming", you'd expect this all-star excursion from the Sun and Bass Recordings camp to be chock full of breezy dancefloor positivity. DJ Patife and David WS deliver just that with the soulful reggae/D&B fusion of the title track, which features some wonderfully slick and emotion rich vocals from Fats. Alibi delivers two lilting chunks of audio sunshine: the hot-stepping dreaminess of "Feelings", where piano motifs and delicate horn samples tumble across the sound space, and the notably sub-heavy punch of Command Strange collaboration "Ahead of Me". Simplification and Translate join forces for closer "Don't Forget", a warm and attractive roller smothered in rubbery synth bass, whistling synth melodies and yearning vocals.

Review: Hannah "DJINN" Garvey has yet to break through as a producer, despite contributing some tight tracks to a number of well regarded, multi-artist EPS. Dark Reference is her debut solo EP and shows rather a lot of promise. Check, for example, the clandestine creepiness of opener "Nine Grounds", a dark jungle rinse out full of authentic early '90s breakbeat edits, moody aural textures and delay-laden ragga vocal samples. The paranoid darkness continues throughout, from the rolling, bass-heavy bustle of "Destructive Consequence" and dubwise hustle of closer "Pressure", to the sweaty madness of title track "Dark Reference". In other words, it's a superior collection of revivalist jungle workouts.

Review: Following a loan move to Exit Records last year, Fracture returns to his Astrophonia label for the first time in two years. Predictably, he hits the ground running with opener "Cold & Rain", a thrillingly bass-heavy assault on the senses built around thrusting sub-bass, cut-up old school jungle breaks and a brilliant vocal from Inaya Day. The "old school revival" vibe continues on the punchy "Your Time" - think powerful analogue bass and darting, "Fly Life" style synths - while "On My Mind" is a pitched-up 4/4 roller that sounds like it was designed to set pulses racing at messy sunrise raves. Old friend Alix Perez lends a hand on closer "So High", whose bustling, rising and falling bassline works in unison with the duo's brilliantly edited breakbeats and manipulated female vocal samples.

Review: Seattle producer Homemade Weapons has made quite an impact over the past 18 months. It was arguably debut album Negative Space that put him on the path to D&B superstardom, so it's fitting that his latest 12" features a quartet of fresh reworks of tracks from that set. He kicks things off with a thrillingly punchy, atmospheric and speaker-bothering re-make of "Tidal Track" - think 21st century Arabic jungle, and you're close - before Ancestral Voices delivers a suitably weird, dark and claustrophobic, experimental D&B interpretation of "Spasmolytic". Flip to the B-side and you'll find a humid, hot-steppin' remix of the feverish "Killing Moon" by The Untouchables - dense and tribal, but surprisingly spacious, too - as well as Sam KDC's dense, gloomy, techno-tinged rework of "Echoes".

Review: What type of collabo-devilry is this? DLR and Hybris are two of the most respected technicians, mix engineers and sound designers of our time. Combining science with funk on every release as individuals, it's no surprise their collaboration EP is no exception... "Every Day Is A New Tomorrow" comes on strong with a creepy classic molten steel tech groove that spaces out like an acid casualty on the breakdown before necksnapping you into oblivion. Elsewhere both parties provide solo heat in the form of the fast-lane racer "Panoramic View" and the hurricane stepper "Lately". Fierce enough to make the devil blush.

Review: Dutch breakbeat connoisseurs Next Phase hoist the jungle flag proudly once again with four ace blistering broken jams. Infest ignites the party with big dubby roller that's awash with big reverbed dub synths, Manchester's Earl Grey smothers the vibe with dense pressure before gradually allowing the dynamics to filter through the atmospheres with icy glee and OG DJ Trax nods towards his old mate Paradox with some incredible and ludicrously funky drum work. Enjoy calms us all down with a deep dub slice that drones so hard you'll think you've just fallen into a sinkhole. Sweet dreams.

Review: Since the tail end of the 1980s, the Steel City of Sheffield has produced a string of sub-bass hungry DJs and producers who like it raw, rough and ready. The latest to rise to prominence is Kid Lib, a producer who was making revivalist jungle rinse-outs long before it became fashionable to do so. As you'd expect, his latest two-track missive bristles with scattergun snare-rolls, precision percussion edits and booming basslines. Intriguingly, both "First Horizon" and "Second Horizon" are far deeper and dreamier than much of his output, as if paying tribute to the earliest "deep drum and bass" releases as much as the frenetic dancefloor pressure of jungle. In some ways, that makes both tracks even more attractive.

Review: Mark System's last outing on Exit, 2015's Final Approach LP, was almost universally praised for its pleasing fusion of bombastic, tech-step influenced bottom end and dreamy, ear-pleasing liquid D&B elements. The long-serving producer has taken a similar approach on this belated follow-up EP. While opener "Break Glass" is a little creepier than previous efforts - if no less punchy and bass-heavy - it retains System's instinctive grasp of the dynamics of light and shade. "600K" brilliantly joins the dots between classic jungle, modern tech-step and 8-bit games soundtracks, while "Obnox" dips crunchy beats in wild electronics to brilliant effect. Best of all, though, is closer "Dissolve", a superior deep space roller that sounds like it was recorded using some vintage electronic hardware.

"You & Me" is all about the jazz with its early Krust-style looseness and subtle evolution while "Like A Rebel" is a much deeper, pensive journey that really opens out half way with a whole new burst of energy. 4. The Savage Chase (5:17)
Review: Toulouse representing! Young Monty steps out for his debut 1985 release... And it's a bit of an occasion; he's the first artist to have their own EP on the label beyond Perez and his and Eprom's Shades project. Naturally he's delivered; "Hold Me Back" is deliciously space age and soulful, "The Underground Fable" is all about the highly-sprung steps and stark minimal shivers, "Spongy Conversation" continues the stark vocal theme over a grimy riddim that's not too far away from Commix at their finest while "The Savage Chase" takes us right down the roller rabbit hole with moody pressure and deep fog horn bass sweeps. Killer.

Again (white vinyl 12" in die-cut sleeve)

  1. Again (6:30)
  2. Uncalled (6:28)
Review: One of the very few artists to ever claim a solo release on Paradox's Paradox Music imprint, Naibu returns to follow up the remarkable "Straight Lines / Replaced" with two more detail-rich, heavily atmospheric compositions. "Again" is work of art; smelting three styles into one, we're ruffhoused, massaged and perplexed in equal measure as the elements entwine and merge into each other. "Uncalled" takes a jazzier turn with its brushed freestyle drums and minor chords cascading like slow motion raindrops. We suspect Naibu will return to Paradox Music again in the future...

  3. Ownglow & Dilemma - "Mercy" (feat Courtney Odom) (5:01)
  4. Glo-Mello-Flow (4:10)
Review: Ownglow AKA Simon Reeves was barely old enough to legally go clubbing when he made his 2014 breakthrough track, "Gold". These days, he's something of an old hand thanks to regular appearances on leading D&B label Hospital Records. Certainly, Inside The Silence, his first EP of 2017, is a more mature sounding proposition than his previous releases. Opener "Breathe", featuring vocalist Ellie Vee and Disco's Over, sets the tone magnificently, offering a sun-kissed romp through soulful D&B pastures. He joins forces with Mitekiss on the heavier roller "Take Me", before inviting Dilemma and singer Courtney Odom into the studio to collaborate on the punchy, melodious and thrillingly bass-heavy "Mercy". He draws a fine EP to a close with "Glo-Mello-Flow", a superb slice of R&B/D&B fusion that's as slick and soulful as they come.
