Pick Up The Pieces (reissue)
Cat: BRZ45 019R. Rel: 20 Dec 24
Wilson Das Neves - "Pick Up The Pieces" (3:13)
Som Tres - "Tanga" (2:04)
Review: Mr Bongo restock a brilliant 7" in their signature Brazil 45s series. The nineteenth to grace it, this blue-starred slice of small wax shone a light on Wilson das Neves' brilliant cover of Average White Band's 'Pick Up The Pieces' on the A, as well as a Mr Bongo fave on the B, Som Tres' potent samba-funk overflow 'Tanga'. The former flexes the historic muscles of a mythic Brazilian percussionist and vibesman, lending fidgety soft feels to AWB's already lull-lifting concoction; then 'Tanga' contrasts to this sense of measuredness with pure animal verve, as Tres' calls out to his bandmates commandingly amid whirlwinds of piano and drums.

General TK - "How We Love Reggae Music So"
Scientist - "How We Dub Reggae Music So"
Review: One of the emblem-bearers of reggae digging in Japan, Ninjapan now turn their hands to two of the foremost Jamaican originators of the genre, Scientist and General TK. Extremely difficult to track down, 'How We Love Reggae Music So' and its corresponding B-side might as well have never before seen a release, only having cropped up in a handful of DJ mixes and unofficial tapes so far. Produced lovingly by the legend Hopeton Brown aka. Scientist on the version, TK's vocals glide with determined confidence over staunch horns and echoic effects, producing only the best of hypnotic effects on this new 7".

Sukiyaki Song (3:01)
Review: Rocksteady from Japanese crew Inokasira Rangers, whom've here teamed up with singer Hikari Suzuki for a cutely delivered cover of the Americana song 'Tonight You Belong To Me' by Nancy Sinatra. Performed in a "skinhead reggae" manner, this is a mysterious but fun version of the erstwhile lolloping 60s pop version. On the flip comes a curveball in the versioned form of one of the greatest-selling singles of all time, 'Ue o Muite Arukou' (aka. 'Sukiyaki' in English-speaking markets), originally sung by Kyu Sakamoto and again retaken by the Rangers.

Review: This London-based crew follows up their recent and acclaimed Akyio project with a 12" that dives deep into the vibrant rhythms of Brazil. The original is by the unique Samba De Matuto Leao Do Norte De Maragogi and was recorded by DJ Tudo. Kolago Kult offers a mix that is packed with Latin swagger, organic percussion and jumble of hand drums while the late Master Tiao adds his vocals to this samba-inspired street sound. Kolago Kult then steps up with two psychedelic remixes that are packed with heavy and dubby rhythms and many layers of percussion. A truly global journey, this one.

Ranjha (4:07)
Review: 'Shehzadi' (which means "Princess") is an Indo-disco gem featuring Solomon's Hindi vocals over Sababa 5's blend of hypnotic drums, nice pulsing bass, bright electric guitar and sparkling synths in a minor key. It channels '80s nostalgia with a modern twist and so rather evokes a Stranger Things meets Bollywood-type vibe. 'Ranjha' (which means 'Lover') shifts to a Middle Eastern feel with synths that echo traditional instruments like the saz. The upbeat groove complements Solomon's dynamic vocals and is filled with hope while dramatic pauses and an exuberant synth solo from Sophia add extra flair to make for a compelling mix of emotion and energy.

Roberto Sanchez - "Words Of My Mouth" (3:24)
Message - "Meditation Of My Dub" (3:24)
Review: Spanish label Base Lee Music has tapped up hometown hero Roberto Sanchez for this great new rockers roots single. 'Words Of My Mouth' really has it all - the smooth flowing bassline that undulates and rumbles with cavernous warmth, the acoustic guitar plucks up top to hint at the old school reggae sound and a vocal that is pure and soulful. The Message band come through with a dub version on the flip that layers in tons of echo and reverb and gets those snaking hi-hats hissing as they melt away to nothing.

Review: This 7" delivers two rare treasures from the early 70s Latin underground, showcasing a blend of innovation and groove. Side-1 is an electrifying gem from 1971, driven by its creative vocal delivery and rhythmic Latin funk foundation. The track's raw energy and unique arrangement make it an irresistible dancefloor favorite. On Side-2, a 1973 classic merges Brazilian jazz with funk and soul, delivering a sophisticated yet infectious groove. Its lush instrumentation and smooth melodies create a heady, distinctive atmosphere, reflecting the musical experimentation of the era. Two tracks that encapsulate the spirit of a dynamic scene.

Love Shines Bright

Ashanti Selah - "Love Shines Bright" (3:36)
J Rooney - "Dub Shines Bright" (3:36)
Review: Ashanti Selah's 'Love Shines Bright' delivers a powerful message of Jah praise, wrapped in a classic island sound that resonates with reggae and dub lovers. The track's uplifting rhythm and soulful vocals set a spiritual tone, invoking positivity and connection. On the flip side, J Rooney's 'Dub Shines Bright' is a masterful dub version, stripping down the original to its roots. With a spacey, atmospheric vibe, the dub version places the vocals in a new light while emphasising the groove and the intricate chords beneath. This 7" single provides a compelling contrast between message-driven reggae and its introspective, dub-infused counterpart, showcasing both artists' talents.

Review: Detour Records proudly presents the latest single from The Sha La La's, 'Always The Heartache' b/w 'Carpenter Of Love' and 'Straighten Up,' available on all formats, including limited edition 7" vinyl. The A-side kicks off with a fuzz guitar riff that sets a west coast tone, leading listeners through a Mod-infused journey. 'Carpenter of Love' showcases Darron Robinson's powerful vocals alongside a soulful Hammond organ, embodying the spirit of London's Mod scene. The B-side closes with 'Straighten Up,' a fiery 1:30 instrumental, fusing Small Faces-style energy with Booker T's groove for an exhilarating finish.

Shuggy
Review: Shuggy Edits kicks off its series with a double-sided treat, offering two distinct flavours of infectious grooves, primed for discerning DJs and dancefloor devotees alike. The A-side presents the 'CK Mix', a vibrant reimagining that injects a shot of adrenaline into the original. Imagine a pulsating rhythm section, swirling melodies, and a captivating blend of electronic and organic instrumentation, all expertly woven together to create a peak-time masterpiece. Flip the record over for the original version of 'Shuggy', a more laid-back affair that oozes with hypnotic rhythms and soulful melodies. This side is a journey into a mesmerising soundscape, perfect for those deeper, more introspective moments on the dancefloor. With its contrasting flavours and undeniable dancefloor appeal, this debut release is a testament to Shuggy Edits' dedication to quality dance music.

Review: Last year saw a repress of the pioneering 1987 self-titled debut EP from Queens, New York hardcore punk heroes Sick Of It All, housed in a limited one time only updated sleeve with new artwork designed by Jime Litwalk. The release was orchestrated to benefit frontman Lou Koller who recently received a cancer diagnosis with all proceeds going directly to the vocalist's treatment. With the outpouring of support from those within the hardcore community, the beneficial pressing has since sold out, leading to their label Revelation opting to now reissue the original version with the restored OG artwork. An influential blueprint and vital cornerstone of early NYHC, paving the way for the plethora of bands that would appear throughout the 90s, the EP boasts early versions of visceral cuts that would re-appear on their 1989 debut full-length Blood, Sweat & No Tears, including 'Pete's Sake', 'Friends Like You', and the venomous 'B.S. Justice' restored to its original full moniker 'Bullshit Justice'.

Review: Silver Skylarks' debut album was a wonderful mix of funky, hard-grooving rhythms with 70s r&b, West African funk, Afrobeat, jazz and Latin soul. Created by songwriter Danny Balis and producer Jeff "Skin" Wade, the album emerged from Balis' lockdown demos and was very much built for the dancefloor. Singles since continue pay homage to the roots of B-Boy culture and the sample-heavy era that influenced hip-hop and house music and here were have more of that. 'Southern Calculus' is a raw one with playful horn leading the charge and 'Style Queen' bringing psyched-out melodies and some disco exuberance.

It's Just Love (2:16)
Review: Long before Ashford & Simpson cemented themselves as the first couple of Motown, Valerie Simpson i raised in the Bronx i was quietly shaping the sound of American soul from the writing room. 'Look Away', now unearthed in its original form by Kent Records, captures her early brilliance. Backed by a haunting girl group (likely some of NYC's finest session singers), this previously unheard cut i out 25 April 2025 i predates the Shirelles' better-known version and carries a raw elegance that feels entirely her own: intimate, aching, and full of melodic poise. Flip it over and you get an even bigger scoop. 'It's Just Love' is a northern soul cornerstone, made famous by a near-mythical 1966 UK-only Parlophone 7" from John Andrews. This female-led take by Simpson, who co-wrote the song, is a seismic find i not just for collectors but for dancers who've long hunted a US production that didn't seem to exist. Now, more than 50 years on, it arrives with velvet touch and timeless sway, offering a rare, crystalline view of Simpson before the spotlight.

Review: Paul Sitter and Tony Lavrutz's collaboration on Eu e Meu Amor plays like a breezy stroll through sun-drenched sounds and smooth rhythms. Their work here pulls effortlessly from bossa nova and tropicalia, but without leaning too heavily on nostalgia. The production is tight and warm, with layered guitars and whispered vocals that could easily soundtrack a lazy afternoon. It's not overly flashy, but it doesn't need to be; the charm is in the simplicity, the way the melodies unfold and gently stick with you long after the record ends.

Review: The 12th release on Mr. Bongo's signature 45s series saw a reissue of two foundational releases in Brazil's modern popular music category; now the record hears a second round, fresh again off the master metal lacquer. On the A, we hear Brazilian samba luminary Elza Soares covering Jorge Ben's classic 'Mas Que Nada' - albeit with a hoarser vocal tone, such was Soares' signature voice, one which only led to a whopping 34-album career. B-sider Elizabeth, by contrast, upholds a mystery; the artist was nicknamed "Gatinha do Mato" ("jungle cat"), and recorded 'Vou Falar-Lhe Francamente' at some indeterminate point in 1960s Sao Paolo, when and where Brazilian local styles blended with funk and rock.

Released in 1993 on an album of the same name, it's a standout example of the lyrical dexterity of A-Plus, Opio, Phesto and Tajai. Its mellow, soulful production complements the effortlessly smooth flows which are packed with sophisticated wordplay and inventive beats that set it apart from usual West Coast gangsta rap by offering a fresh, alternative sound. Minsk collective Soyuz have some seriously strong musical chops and subsequently can bring in guest appearances from the sensational Biel Basile of the rising Brazilian group Sessa and Anthony Ferraro (Toro Y Moi, Astronauts, Etc.). They fit into the mixes beautifully, sounding like they've been part of the group their whole lives. It's a real gem of a release and a likely future collectible 7" from the Brighton-based independent label Mr Bongo.
