Unlisted Fanatic - "Poorman" (3:48)
Unlisted Fanatic - "Poorman" (dub) (3:49)
Review: Seafront International is "honoured" to unveil a poignant tribute to the late, great Sandeeno, who left us far too soon. In that regard, and with the legacy he leaves, he joins the ranks of many other reggae legends. This long-awaited release originates from a recording session a decade ago at Backyard Studio UK, and since then it has lay patiently awaiting completion. Renowned Belgian producer Martin De Ronne, also known as Unlisted Fanatic, has impeccably handled production and mixing duties. He levels up the track with the soulful embellishments of Moonshine Horns and guitar accents courtesy of Kingston Echo.

Jah Warrior - "Rougher Dub" (3:49)
Review: Seafront International returns with some classic roots sounds from U Brown with a dub from Jah Warrior. Recorded at Conscious Sounds studio in London 2001, the sounds are stripped down to raw bass and drum dynamics by producer Jah Warrior who was clearly intent on allowing his work to be a personal platform for U Brown to offer up his own lyrical expressions and his musical messages. It's a track delivered with energy and serious focus and will sound best nice and loud.

Tommy McCook & The Supersonics - "The World Needs Love" (2:08)
Review: Both tracks on this crucial new drop from Duke share a common theme of love and harmony, which were of course the cornerstones of reggae and part of the reason it has such an enduring appeal as the universal need for compassion and unity has never diminished. In fact, it might be more needed now than ever. First, 'Peace & Love' by U-Roy, The Jamaicans, and Tommy McCook & The Supersonics is a timeless cut with U-Roy's toasting sat next to horn-driven rhythms that were first released in the 1970s. Similarly, Tommy McCook & The Supersonics' "The World Needs Love" captures the essence of70s reggae, with McCook's smooth saxophone leading the instrumental arrangement.

Stone Fox Chase (UB 7' edit) (4:53)
Delirium (UB 7' edit) (4:30)
Review: The UB's bring their particular brand of funk to this steamy and fiery new 7" on the Fraternity label. It finds them in edit mode and first up reworking 'Stone Fox Chase'. It has some country-style harmonica built into the raw beats and plenty of psyched-out guitar lines that bring Americana vibes to the percolating rhythms. On the flip is their edit of 'Delirium' which is a totally different proposition - smooth funk grooves with busy chords and icy hi-hats. It's one that looks to the stars and crushes there on a feelgood vibe you hope never ends.

Review: For the second release on New York City's Peace Anthem Records, Annie Garlid
Aka UCC Harlo - a viola player and singer from Connecticut, living in Berlin - joins NY Graffiti for what the label so eloquently described itself as 'Ketamine-paced grooves, baroque miniatures, hazy-humid sonics, and dub inflections'. On the A side, you've got UCC Harlo serving up the minimal atmospherics of 'Let's See' awash in shimmering FM synth aesthetics, followed over on the flip by the evocative breaks of 'UN' by NY Graffiti, not to mention each of them delivering a remix of the other's track.

Set Your House In Order (4:37)
Lego Brick Road (5:23)
Review: Whether or not this label is named in reference to long-life semi-skimmed milk, we do not know, but the tunes on it are certainly fatter than the 2% you get with UHT. 'Set Your House In Order' is the sort of raw, from-the-heart soul sound that will bring any floor to rapture with its gospel influenced lyrics, big horns and neat organ chords. It's a real dancer, while 'Lego Brick Road' is more of a funk-strutter with moody bass and upright kicks embellished with some warped vocals and playful licks. Two gems.

For Your Love (2:19)
Taxman (2:33)
Review: With a title paying homage to London's cultural epicentre for the hippie and mod movements that would serve as precursors to the punk rock revolution, The Carnaby St. EP offers up a seasoned cross-Atlantic meeting of sonic minds between two seminal punk acts on either side of the sea. With legendary UK Subs frontman Charlie Harper and long-time bassist Alvin Gibbs linking up with Dead Boys guitarist Cheetah Chrome for a balls-to the-wall blowout celebration of some of the most quintessential cuts from the British Invasion that initially put them on their life-long trajectories, here the mutual veterans tear through faithful yet feral renditions of The Rolling Stones' 'Paint It Black', The Yardbirds' 'For Your Love', and our personal favourite; 'Taxman' by The Beatles. 3 covers, 7 inches and decades' worth of punk rock legacy.

Ordinary Boy (Leifur James remix) (4:06)
Review: Ultraista put out a highly acclaimed album in March and now it gets remixed by some superb underground electronic artists. Floating Points ditches his intricate prog and synth work of recent times to turn in a nice glitchy garage mix. American FaltyDL then soars up to the heavens on nice soulful vocal and shimmering drums and Zero 7 goes for a slower, more downtempo vibe for chilled home sessions. After a flurry of jungle percussion and drums from Crate Classics, Leifur James closes things down with intricate electronics and pensive synths. No two tunes here are alike, and all are essential.

Review: French-Haitian saxophone player Ulysse laid this cult gem down in 1983. After its release, he became an underground sensation within the niche French boogie scene, Both of the tunes which now get reissued manage to successfully mix political statements with dance-floor fire. First up is 'Naima' which is about the resilience of a woman who has grown up in war. On the flip is 'Tiers Monde' which is a much more heavy digital reggae tune that offers a reminder that we must not forget about abandoned children of the Third World. This was big in Paris in the 80s and will be just as big now.

Review: The crucial Original Gravity label is busy this month with three red hot new 7"s all dropping in quick succession. The top-notch funk crew has this spilt 7" from Umoza Music Project and The Woodfield Road Allstars up here on limited wax. The a-side is a sunny bit of original rousing 70s reggae direct from the islands. Backing vocalists provide plenty of butter while the lead laments a love lost and the rhythm rolls on. On the back side is a much more stoner-paced and funk drenched laidback instrumental with Balearic guitar licks that look to the stars as organ chords warm you through and the rocksteady rhythm gently sways to and fro. Two gems for sure.

Review: This reissue seven-inch offers up another double-header of hard to find heat from the expansive vaults of the legendary Kent label. First up on the A-side is Unique Blend's 1973 cut "Gonna Spread The News", a spiraling chunk of sing-along soul goodness full of heady group vocals, cut-glass strings, hazy horns and clipped guitar riffs. Over on side B you'll find A.C. Tilmon & The Detroit Emeralds' 1975 side "That's All I Got", a slightly more up-tempo and punchier affair that prioritizes groove and vocals over any kind of orchestral sweetness.

Never Let Me Go (3:26)
Review: Originally cut to wax and released in limited qualities in Jamaica way back in 1968, this single from the combined talents of producer Bunny Lee, vocal troupe Uniques and backing band Bobby Aitken and the Carib Beats has long been hard to find. We'd definitely recommend picking up this reissue, because the A-side rocksteady cover of Curtis Mayfield classic 'Gipsy Woman' is really rather good. The Uniques' vocals are every bit as sweet as Mayfield's, while the Lee-produced backing track boasts a fantastically deep and slow riddim. Flipside 'Never Let Me Go' is another simmering slow jam; while impressive, it's not a patch on the superb A-side.

Review: Mega-chromatic soul-jazz with a dash of weirdness from The Universal Togetherness Band. 'I Want You' and 'Call For Love' were recorded between 1979 and 1982, and were subsequently shelved until one of the duo's members began doling out cassette versions, which led to an unearthing in 2014. Unable to find a label for 'I Can Remember' they recorded at Cavern Studios, a unique space built in a Missouri limestone cave. Review: If you're looking for some exotic, spiritually minded jazz to kick-start 2021, look no further than this inspired collection as "direct-to-disc" improvisation from drummer Sarathy Korwar and his regular studio partners, the UPAJ Collective. In keeping with the feel of their previous work, the five showcased improvised recordings brilliant fuse familiar spiritual jazz tropes (snaking saxophone solos, loose-limbed drums and quality keys-work) with the traditions and sounds of Indian classical music (think tablas, violins, Hindi musical motifs played on acoustic guitar etc). Throw in some real-time recording trickery, and you've got an unusual but extremely entertaining set that we firmly believe is the first great jazz album of 2021.

Review: A stunning album of big band music from Finnish composer, Kerkko Koskinen, featuring Linda Fredriksson on saxophone and the UMO Helskinki Jazz Orchestra, Agatha 2 is a sequel of sorts to their original Agatha album released in 2007. Tracing Koskinen's signature immensely emotive and dramatic approach to composition, this album sits beautifully between moody atmospheres and fully immersive rushes of cinematic sound. It is clear that Fredrikkson and Koskinen share a clear vision with her solo performances shining against the undulating orchestral backdrop. Taking on a distinctly melancholic and nostalgic mood, especially with the pieces 'Promenade' and 'Piana', the drums are positioned at a purposeful distance to the driving dynamics of the composition, adding a hint of melodic colour to the overall piece rather than being a central force. An inventive project that journeys forwards and backwards in time.

It is aptly described as "a paranoid party-starter cast against a menacing greyscale backdrop of impressive dystopian grandeur." Now a major international star with a quartet of major label backed solo albums to her name, the Colombian American rapper and singer arrives at album number five, Sincerely, at the peak of her powers. During a 1975 tour of Japan with the Pioneers, they found time to hook up with guitarist and vocalist Toshikatsu Uchiumi of the rock band The Carol. Review: Uhlmann Johnson Wilkes is the debut album from Gregory Uhlmann, Josh Johnson and Sam Wilkes, a collective of three versatile improvisers, arrangers and producers whose work spans jazz, rock and experimental. Across 11 instrumental tracks, they explore a jazz-informed take on progressive electro-acoustic chamber music that brings beauty, melody and rhythm to the fore. The record was conceived during live shows and a home session in Los Angeles and features Uhlmann's mournful fingerpicked guitar, Wilkes' bass chording and Johnson's effect-laden saxophone. Their arrangement-minded improvisation results in some nicely otherworldly textures as they push their instruments to create a spacious, lyrical sound.

Review: In classic jazz style, this collaborative three-way debut album brings together three musicians at the top of their game: SML members Gregory Uhlman (guitar and effects) and Josh Johnson (saxophone and effects), and sometime Louis Cole, Sam Gendel and Chaka Khan collaborator Sam Wilkes (bass and effects). Musically, what the trio offers is undeniably unique, with International Anthem describing the album as "a jazz-informed take on progressive electro-acoustic chamber music". Certainly, there's much to enjoy, from the tracked bass, guitar and sax loops and subtle changes of 'Mavis' and the dreamlike ambient jazz of 'Arpy', to the bubbling cosmic jazz of 'Frica' and a stunning, off-kilter instrumental cover of Magical Mystery Tour-era Beatles number 'The Fool On The Hill'.

With lyrical cynicism showcasing Harper's razor sharp wit and riffage that simultaneously reflects the burgeoning hardcore scene forming across the Atlantic in 1982 (an era that saw the first batch of albums from future legends such as Black Flag, Negative Approach and Circle Jerks) whilst furthering their own brand of homegrown rock-centric punk into frenetic new directions, the work was severely ahead of its time with regards to where punk was at and where it was heading, with bangers such as the title-track or sarcastic 'Down On The Farm' still going as hard today as they did over four decades years ago.

Review: Having recently been refused entry into the US due to their staunch anti-Trump stance, London's own pub rock turned homegrown punk icons UK Subs shall reissue their criminally underrated Japan Today for Record Store Day 2025. Originally released in 1987 and ranked letter J in the Subs' A-Z album list, this LP has been out of print for the past decade and finally returns home to wax for both longtime fans who've worn their original pressing down to PVC scraps and late to the party newcomers doing their most studious punk homework. Remastered with updated artwork, featuring both Knox and Daryl Barth wielding a double-guitar assault, the record boasts some of the band's most overlooked gems such as 'Another Cuba' and 'Thunderbird Wine'.

Review: Often unfairly forgotten in the pantheon of alphabetical A to Z records from homegrown punk legends UK Subs, Flood Of Lies would arrive in 1983 on the heels of Endangered Species and mark both a shift in line up as well as a creative change of course. Enlisting early Subs bassist Steve Slack, drummer Steve Jones and guitarist Captain Scarlet, this new stable would help incomparable punk lifer and legendary frontman Charlie Harper to strike a balance between remaining faithful to their core punk ethos whilst experimenting with more accessible mid-tempo tracks recalling their early pub rock days yet far more refined. Forget what any middling review or closed minded fanboy said four decades ago, corner any tried and tested Subs devotee and they'll sing the praises of Flood Of Lies for days.

Review: Although the common consensus amongst the fateful UK Subs fanbase regards London's own pub-rockers turned punk heroes' classic debut LP Another Kind Of Blues as the high watermark of their output, many devout listener as well as both founding vocalist Charlie Harper and guitarist Nicky Garratt will counter-argue that the band's explosive fifth album Endangered Species (1982) is their strongest work. Complete with razor sharp cynical, lyrical insights and chunky riffage not dissimilar to the burgeoning hardcore scene formulating in tandem in early 80s USA, the material saw the Subs pushing their own form of classic rock-oriented punk into aggressive, surprising new directions, being both sonically emblematic of where the punk scene was at this time and where the future was beckoning towards, while bangers such as the title-track and the humorously sardonic 'Down On The Farm' still go as hard today as they did over four decades prior.

Review: While many a devout U.K. Subs fanatic will lay claim that the pub-rockers turned punk legends' seminal debut full-length Another Kind Of Blues is and shall always be the band's most vital contribution to the punk maelstrom, both legendary founding vocalist Charlie Harper and guitarist Nicky Garratt consider their fifth album Endangered Species to be their finest work. Boasting razor sharp lyrical cynicism and riffs simultaneously reflective of the burgeoning hardcore scene taking shape across the pond in 1982 (which saw the first slew of albums from future icons such as Black Flag, Circle Jerks and Descendents) while also pushing their own form of homegrown rock-oriented punk into aggressive new directions, the material was majorly ahead of its time in regards to where the punk scene was and where it was headed, with gems such as the title-track and sardonic 'Down On The Farm' still going as hard as they did 40 years ago. A true testament to the underrated staying power of one of the homegrown greats of first wave punk..

Review: PPU is one of your favourite labels when it comes to dusty and lo-fi soul and related sounds. Now the DC-based crew delivers another gem with Grand Hotel, a collection of ten rare tracks from Estonian funk legend Uku Kuut, who they have released several times before now. The instrumental album traces Kuut's journey through the Soviet Union, Sweden, Los Angeles, and Estonia and is a window into his excellently eclectic style. Highlights include his first home recording from 1982 and a track produced in Herbie Hancock's studio. After more than 30 years of travelling across borders, these precious masters have found a permanent home and means that Grand Hotel is a fine tribute to Kuut's international influences.

Review: Foam On A Wave is a brand new London-based reissue label. Its first offering is a carefully dug out delight from Ian Cooper and Paul Hammond aka Ultramarine, one of the UK's foremost ambient techno artists. Folk is a seamless weaving together of "unique instrumentation and sonic influences into rich, ethereal soundscapes" that have all been fully remastered for this 30th anniversary release. Mixing up organic and synthetic sound is what this pair did best and this album has a kaleidoscopic pallet drawn from Canterbury's jazz-infused psychedelia, the contemporary Benelux scene, and plenty in between. It manages to be both thoughtful and playful, serious yet irreverent, and has aged as well as a fine wine.

Review: First released in 1981, and garnering the 100,000-plus sales needed to hit Gold certification pretty quickly after arrival - a feat which, back in the glory days of charts, was still only enough for you to peak at #4 in the albums league - at the time this was a case of Ultravox, here in the height of the Midge Ure years, taking the electronic explorations that defined the previous two full-length records, Systems of Romance and Vienna, even further, returning to the same Cologne studio to achieve that quality and feeling.

Of course, there are still shades of the band as they were in formative, mid-1970s years, which many still forget was a far (far) rockier beast. Nevertheless, the synths make the most lasting impression here, with the LP somehow sounding kind of stark, a little cold and distant, perhaps even enigmatic, yet full and in many ways fun.

Review: The sixth studio album by British synth pop legends Ultravox landed in 1982, and peaked at an impressive number six in an albums chart that was still highly competitive. By December that year, the record had clocked up more than 100,000 copies, earning a Gold certificate from the BPI, while also ranking in US and German hit lists around the same time. Notable as it saw George Martin (affectionally known to some as The Fifth Beatle) stepping up to the helm, this veteran apparently claimed the band were "the most musical" he'd worked with in years. Agree or not, the record is bold and theatrical, at times taking us out on the town in bleep-happy Sheffield (or some such synth domain), in other moments inviting us to partake in a strange electronic cabaret.

Fairweather Friend is the difficult second album that didn't prove so and brought yet more lush and candied melodies with confident guitar, great vocals and plenty of studio finesse. Not bad for a group that met at San Francisco record emporium Amoeba Music.

Review: Once the leader of iconic and legendary Japanese New Wave rockers EX, Shigeru Umebayashi's Music For A Film compilation showcases the better-known work (in today's terms at least) of this multifaceted and multi-talented composer. 21 tracks of absolute beauty, all of which are taken from his 30-strong-plus oeuvre of movie scores, built over time since he first began writing tracks for screens in 1985, after said band called time.
Opening with what may be his most famous work of all time, 'Yumeji's Theme' (title piece from Siejun Suzuki's critically acclaimed 1991 movie, Yumeji) the playlist here really showcases the vision and musicality Umebayashi is renowned for, and removed from the context of movies the work is elevated to new heights. Classical, choral, quiet epics, and romantic mini-overtures rarely sound so good.

Review: Unchained is the longstanding solo project of Nathaniel Davis. Gabbeh is his latest offering to the world, a suite of blissfully introspective tracks that envelop the soul in a blanket of soft, delicate moods, their sole purpose to comfort aching heads. Remarkably, dedicated fans will know you can trace the artist's lineage to noise mix tapes on CD-R, although more recent excursions into Bossa nova influenced tones perhaps help bridge the gap between then and now. Recorded at home over a three year period, from 2020 to 2023, Grenoble, Switzerland, played a big part in end results here. "I think certain songs reflect, in ways, Grenoble's natural surroundings. 'Drac' is named after the river that flows from the mountains down to the city - 'Dru' is the name of a well-known peak near Chamonix," Davis has explained. That as may be, nevertheless there's something more transportive than that here - songs feel as though they would be at home anywhere green, slow and thoughtful.

Review: Unionen is a new quartet of top-tier Norwegian and Swedish jazz musicians, namely Stale Storlokken, Per "Texas" Johansson, Petter Eldh and Gard Nilssen. Their name references the 1814-1905 union between Sweden and Norway and their sound is truly unique in the way it combines misty introspection and energetic rock-infused jazz. This album then is a deeply original musical experience with tracks like 'Stahlbad' and '6983' dull of emotional nuance. Eight originals overall blend classic and rare instruments, creating a unified, emotive sound. Early live shows have been praised, confirming their status as a standout jazz ensemble.

V is said to be the band's most definitive album yet and it was written between the dry freeways of Palm Springs in California and the much more lush coastlines of Hawai'i. As such it is drawn from a world of West Coast AOR, classic hits, weirdo pop and Hawaiian Hapa-haole music. This is the first double album in the artist's discography and it is well worth the extra playtime.

Review: Logic runs through the Unknown Mortal Orchestra back catalogue, even if that's just in terms of what the records are actually called. V, then, is album number five, a double-sized and long-awaited package that represents the first long form outing from Ruban Nielson and Co since 2018. In modern music, that's a hell of a long time. Rest assured, though, it seems like time was well spent honing crafts, polishing ideas, and coming out with 14 incredibly interesting and compelling songs.

In many ways V isn't a huge departure from IV, but - maybe because of that extended gap - you still can't shake the feeling this is you meeting the Orchestra for the first time. Packed full of surprises, running the gamut between blissed out, stargazing stuff, lo-fi funk steppers, and a kind of stoner pop-blues, it's love at first play. Again.

Review: BBC's hit action drama Killing Eve not only introduced the exceptional screen talent of Jodie Comer to a global audience, it also had some damned good tunes each and every season. Unloved were responsible for much of the soundtrack to the relationship between deadly assassin Villanelle and super-determined government agent Eve, which progresses from obsessive woman-hunt to weirdly playful cat and mouse games and finally, something much more personal. Ode to the Lovers collates much of the music delivered by Unloved for this gripping journey played out over four series, resulting in a staggeringly mesmerising collection of sounds that seem to lull, swoon, sway, romance, mystify and, finally, win hearts over. Blissful and beautiful instrumental classical-pop-electronic business, it's certainly worthy of the eye candy these limited run pressings come packaged in.

Review: Departing Roadrunner Records for the more fitting label home of Century Media, Portland, Oregon's Unto Others (FKA Idle Hands) have consistently been referred to in the music press as the likely torch bearers of the goth-metal revival, with many even heralding them as the 21st century successors to The Sisters Of Mercy or Type O Negative. While their macabre 2019 debut Mana and the more abrasive sophomore effort Strength both provided glimpses of this perceived greatness, it's with their highly anticipated third full-length Never, Neverland the band truly seize the mantle and rise to the weighted pressure. Tapping producer Tom Dalgety (The Cult, Ghost) has proved a stroke of genius, as his experience and melodious sonic penchants allow for glossy synthwave to pulse beneath gloomy, gothic, lovelorn death-rock bangers as accessible and instantaneous as they are menacing. Dust off your black shades and leather jacket, it's cool to be a sad, verbose goth with a deep voice again.
