Review: Americans Hank Jacobs and Don Malone cooked up a bona fide political soul anthem when they crafted 'The World Needs Changin' back in 1970. It is now hard to find so naturally these days it fetches a very handsome fee on second hand markets so has rightly been reissued here by BGP. The a-side is a tune that cuts deep, with pained vocals over a simple but devastating soul rhythm. On the flip is another gem in the form of 'Getting On Down' making this a crucial cut.

Review: Soul Flip are the label completely upending our idea of what 'edits' are. Rather than putting 4x4 kicks on disco classics or reinventing funk instrumentals from the ground up, take this treatment of The Jam: 'A Solid Bond In Your Heart' gets a nice glassy flip-up, with sunny rhythm guitar and handclaps backending a song we never knew had the potential to become soul music in the first place. An equal treatment is given to The Capitols' 'Cool Jerk'.

Review: The Outta Sight Soul label kept coming with the good stuff this year, this time featuring a double sider from the sadly departed R&B vocalist Etta James flipped by the unknown Tony Topsy. The 1961 classic "Seven Day Fool" is classic stompy Rhythm & Blues tackle with great lyrics in which Etta tells us about working her butt off for a whole week just to get the good loving of her man. On the flip you'll find a more bluesy rasping soul number from female vocalist Tony Topsy on "Just A Little Bit".

Review: Jaribu Afrobeat Arkestra are an entirely unique phenomenon, a Japanese collective pushing forward Neo-Afrobeat with heavy influence of the classic Japanese jazz sound and the long tradition of covering iconic western soul/funk tracks. Aretha Franklin's 'Rock Steady' is a collaboration with fellow Japanese artist Tina (aka Luv Tina), a decorated vocal powerhouse in the early 2000s R&B landscape, culminating in a mind-boggling genre mashup that defies expectations. The J.A.A. chorus section matches Tina's power perfectly with the blaring jazz instrumental, with phenomenal sax and trumpets. Swipe this coloured reissue before it goes again, you have to hear it to feel it.

Review: The JariBu Afrobeat Arkestra formed in 2006 with a strong influence from grandmaster Fela Kuti, but equally with a clear-sighted intention to take their music in a new direction they deemed neoafrobeat. Japanese label Soul Garden have become a natural home for their sound since 2009 debut LP Afro Sound System, and they're back on Soul Garden once again with their latest single, a cover of Aretha Franklin's universally adored funk pinnacle, 'Rock Steady'. As well as the band's effervescent original version on the A side, on the flip we get an edit of the track by MACKA-CHIN with just a few tweaks here and there for the DJs.

Review: Brand new seven-piece Miami/New York troupe Jason Joshua & The Beholders land on the freshly-bubbling Miami imprint Mango Hill with their debut 45". Showcasing their style across two sides, "Rose Gold" is a woozy, bluesy ballad with all the dreamy motifs you'd expect from such a heartfelt piece while "Are You Ready?" takes us up a notch or two into stomping northern territory with velvet falsettos and stark staccato horns. Review: The esteemed Kalinda label serves up this glorious two-track soul and jazz release featuring Mavis John and The Red Stripe Band and we are here for it. It's a warming and funky rhythm overload with organic percussion and backed by lush chords as the Mavis vocal teases, pleases and seduces. On the flip side The Red Stripe Band fire up the dance floor with a more driving and strident rhythm section and bigger vocal bursts that will get you in a spin. Add in some exuberant song stabs and cosmic synth sounds and you have an ageless wonder.

Review: Our Label Records has never been prolific - this release is just their 19th vinyl outing since 2005 - but the imprint's catalogue is packed to the rafters with soul and funk-fired musical gold. This 45 contains more must-have material in the form of lightly edited versions of two tracks from last year's collaborative full-length from Hamburg-based band The Angels of Libra and Irish vocalist Nathan Johnston. 'All of Love' is a smooth, nostalgic chunk of deep soul in which Johnston sings sweetly and emotionally atop an attractive bed of rubbery bass guitar, shuffling funk style drum-breaks, glistening guitars and heavy horns. Flip-side 'Curtis', meanwhile, is a sultry, simmering, string-laden number of the sort that were once Curtis Mayfield's stock-in-trade.

Review: Hamburg based soul outfit Angels of Libra serve up a second single here in collaboration with Irish singer/songwriter Nathan Johnston. It's based on a bunch of instrumentals recorded on a TASCAM 388 8-track in a remote house outside Copenhagen by producer Dennis Rux with the group. The classic sounds were finished off with a more new school vocal style a la Anderson Paak to result in a track that is impossible to date but easy to love, with rich horns and seductive bass. It's a tune about the burning passion we all feel when we meet someone new and immediately fall for.

Review: Robert Jones and Berdell Gaston were said to be a couple of session musicians who, like many, worked tirelessly in the background while others took the spotlight and accolades. "Do You Get The Message" was recorded as a demo by Gaston (with Jones on vocals) as The Grey Imprint in 1969. In the beginning, it never made it past the demo stage to get a release. This is a true digger's delight which fetches exorbitant prices on the secondhand market so we're glad the vintage treasure gets a needed re-issue. On the flip, the cheekily titled version by The Cannonballs is actually an instrumental.

Review: Soundway brings the West Indian funk from 1977 on the new and raw double-sider. King Wellington's 'Shango' goes first and is a tune taken from his Sooner Or Later album. It now finally makes it onto 45rom for the first time and is inspired by the ritual from which it takes its name with roots in Yoruba culture and hints of Calypso music all powered by hypnotic bass with Wellington's signature vocal adding to this unique Caribbean blend. Canadian musician Tony Springer fronts the B-side cut 'Mystery Man' which is a dreamy and psyched-out trip with electric keys and floating horns.

Review: There is some class edit and mash up business going on here with the latest one from the Disco Bits crew. The 45 takes the form of of classic cuts reworked with an all new and contemporary edge with the dancefloor very much in mind. First up, a Patti Job classic gets taken apart and rebuilt with new vocals and a more stepping beat. The Chopper's 'People Hold On' is a more smoochy sound with classic vocal refrains singing out and twanging guitar riffs powering along a groove that is suited for everything from weddings to late night shenanigans.

Review: A brand new funk and soul compilation throwing back to four cross-sixties exquisites, Soul 4 Real have really outdone themselves this time about. We lead with the pithy prancing-about that it Gladys Knight & The Pips' lost-love magic carpet ride in song, 'Show Me The Way', which flaunts the singer's tumescent voice in a flurry of longing to acquire her crush's ticker. Then Martha Reeves' apparently, formerly unreleased 'This Is The Love' showcases the Alabaman's vaso-dilated voice against an equally degage but still hooking soul jovial. The B travels further back in time to The Temptations' 'Since I Don't Have You', an unreleased stock with an especial Christmas charm from the Motown towerers; and finally, Blinky and Edwin Starr consummate a duetting soul love, through harmonics and end-phrase ghost notes, on the closing 'Never Gonna Give You Up'.

Review: Japan meets Jamaica in Tokyo Riddim Band's latest single where illustrious keyboardist Izumi 'Mimi' Kobayashi joins forces with Jamaican singer Ras Tavaris. This track revives Kobayashi's 1981 hit, 'Lazy Love,' originally from her sought-after Coconuts High LP recorded in LA. Featured on Time Capsule's 2024 Japanese reggae compilation Tokyo Riddim 1976-1985, the song now transforms from soulful pop to a deep dub cut. Review: Known for its apt inclusion in the soundtrack for the classic Northern soul genre biopic Good For The Soul by director Dean Chalkley, Tobi Lark's fast-paced classic 'True True Love' hears a worthwhile pairing alongside The Dave & Darrell Band's instrumental retake here on a new Kent Soul 7". Recalling the quick-footed fouettes of dancer Durassie Kiangangu, who in the film entrains himself to many variously heated - and often difficult to dance to - Northern Soul rhythms, this track flaunts Lark's distinctly gravelly Canadian gospel voice, set against quick-witted drumming from longtime collaborator Darrell; both were favourites of the influental but short-lived Detroit label Topper.

Review: This essential soul 7" brings together two exceedingly hard-to-find 1970s classics for the very first time. On the A-side you'll find Connie Laverne's deliciously sweet and soaring "Can't Live Without You", a 1974 cut that sits somewhere between classic dancefloor soul and the then emerging Philadelphia International, proto-disco sound. On the flip you'll find another low-down, orchestrated slice of proto-disco perfection from New Jersey duo the Anderson Brothers. While nowhere near as tricky to track down as Laverne's A-side, "I Can See Him Losing You" is nevertheless similarly inspired and should be in the collection of every serious soul enthusiast.

Review: Earlier this year American Shawn Lee and The Soul Surfers formed an unlikely but seriously funky alliance. The result is a Russian/US super group via London and they've already released a full eponymous album. Here are two of the LP's many highlights; first we have the deep swing and jazzy wafts of the ETA-style "Jose Chicago" where things develop into some divine clean breaks towards the end before dropping into much more of a cosmic pastoral idyll on "Four Track Mind". Stunning.
