Generator: Broadcast In Hi Tech
Abstract Science - "The Grinder"
Andy Rantzen - "The Kiss"
DJ T-1000 - "Detroitism"
Terrence Dixon - "Daily Routine"
Obsolete Music Technology - "Past Virtue"
Plural - "07"
Jamal M - "Fine & Mellow"
Windimoto - "Friday Night: UBQ"
Review: A hefty double 12" from Generator features a slew of basement techno bombs from both sides of the Atlantic (oh, and Australia). From the pounding, relentless throb of Abstract Science's "The Grinder" to the shuffling groove of "Detroitism" by DJ-T 1000, the eight tracks cover the full breadth of techno's rich sonic landscape. Other highlights include the broken beats and woodblock percussion on Plural's "07" and the more experimental vibe of "Fine & Mellow" by Mathematics boss and general Chicago underground legend, Jamal M. An unmissable collection of tracks packaged in highly collectable artwork by Alan Oldham, who was also responsible for the superbly illustrated Defenders Of The Deep House World EP that surfaced on Third Ear a few months back.

Track 1 (5:33)
Track 2 (5:39)
Track 3 (6:06)
Track 4 (6:56)
Review: Raquel Rivera-Lys aka Adi from Colombia has teamed up with Basic Moves head honcho Michiel Claus aka Walrus to start this new label For Playful Manners. They also split the first EP up between them and immediately turn heads with their wonky and unhinged house sounds. Who has made what track is no credited here but the first one is all spinning snares and crisp tech drums with warped keys draped over the top. There is more direct and bouncy techno on 'Track 2,' spaced out breaks on 'Track 3' and 'Track 4' is a lovely analogue house workout that's dusty and dishevelled.

Trax 25 vs DJ History Vol 3: Trax Re Edited

Funky/Club House
Adonis - "Down The House" (Toby Tobias & Hardway Bros remix)
Willie Wonka - "What Is House" (Andy Blake edit)
Ron Hardy - "Sensation" (Richard Sen edit)
Mr Lee - "Pump Up Chicago" (JD Twitch edit)
Review: Whilst all the vinyl samplers for this DJ History curated Trax Re-edit compilation are worth investigating, it's perhaps this third volume that screams essential the most by virtue of the presence of JD Twitch, Andy Blake, Richard Sen, Toby Tobias and Hardway Bros as the resident re-editors. Nor do they disappoint either as Hardway Bros team up with Rekids type Tobias and introduce some driving energetic synth patterns into Adonis' "We're Rocking Down This House" as well as embellishing the bottom end for a modern day warehouse thumper. Equally good is Cave Painter Andy Blake teasing out the rubbery off kilter undertones to Willy Wonka's spoken word drum machine thriller "What Is House" whilst retaining the raw, stuttering core. On the flip, Richard Sen goes deep on the signature synth stabs to Ron Hardy's "Sensation" which will destroy the more discerning dancefloors out there. Finally JD Twitch strips Mr. Lee's "Pump Up Chicago" of its really quite silly overtones and twists the track into a brilliantly hypnotic and menacing acid tinged late night jacker

Review: There’s no denying the power of a Broke release and here Wavewhore provide a stonking bassline reggae-fest in the form of "Sound System Banger". On the flip it's just as heavy but the ingredients include a large pinch of funk. This will rock any dancefloor without exception.

The Madd Scientist - "Funky Dreamz" (6:38)
DJ Who - "Shitty Samples On Acid (On The Rocks)" (5:37)
WhoDonIt - "House Rhythm" (4:59)
Review: Destination Baltimore 1995, Alienage (AKA Tony Pegas and Don Corrieri) indulged in a little lysergic and sonic experimentation. The results were a series of seriously heady club bangers released on Gargoyle and they still sound fat as hell 25 years later. This latest reissue sees Alienage take the lead with necksnap electro breaks, a sultry vox and buckets of sub before Pegas goes solo with his Madd Scientist alias on the b-boy style 'Funky Dreamz'. Flip for two from Who: the slamming TCR-style breaks of 'Shitty Samples On Acid' and an earlier 90s-style, heavily layered, slightly proggy jam 'House Rhythm'. Keep watching the skies.

DJ DSK - "Check Out The Technique" (feat Akil & Mysdiggi) (2:58)
Review: This internationally-flavoured vinyl 7? is a raucous celebration of hip-hop culture. The All Stars team who have crafted the a-side is made up of a load of talented veterans a.k.a. DJ DSK, Whirlwind D, Chrome, Specifik and Mr Wonderful. They pool their skills for a heavy dance floor celebration of Shanghai b-boy outfit Juice Crew that pays fine homage to MC Shan's original '88 classic 'Juice Crew Law'. Review: Inimeg Records label boss and general underground don Joey Anderson has always operated on the fringes of the deepest house and techno sounds. The New Jersey mainstay returns now with the Vanish EP on Obia Records while owner Wendel Sield also pops up with one tune. Anderson's trio ranges from the dusty, smoky basement dub of 'Vanish' to the ticking and glitchy minimal menace of 'Masked Ones' via the intense synth dystopia of 'Escape'. Sield's 'Cultivate' is a smeared, spacious cut with meandering pads and prickly percussion that zones you out for days.

A-side, in a more Chicago-ish vein, sees ARK and WHITE PAPOO on the remix driving seat, both delivering bass-heavy blip house that any Derrick Carter fan will enjoy to the max. Lego Edit - "Agosto D'Amor" (Lego Re edit) (5:37)
Review: Legofunk builds more bridges between beats with another four tracker from various artists. Atoz kick off with a chunky, heavyweight house tune 'Woman' which samples the iconic vocal from Nina Simone's 'See-Line Woman' tune. Musta goes for a more flailing and funky driven feeling on the afro-tinged 'Cam Run Sun' and on the flip, Wandervogel references one of the greatest fights of all-time with 'Thrilla In Manila.' No punches are pulled on this fulsome afro-disco pumper and last of all things get deep, with hip swinging claps and twirling trumpet leads all primed to warm up any club on 'Agosto D'Amor.'

Review: The Supply crew's John Barera and Will Martin team up again but this time it's for Steve Mizek's Argot imprint, and the duo have duly supplied their familiarly dusty brand of house music. The title track "1 2 3 (Feels Right)" is sparse, raw as hell and synth-heavy, while "Hide Tide" is a little ore low-key and loose around the edges. Over on the B-side, "Spin Cycle" unleashes a bubbling low-end underneath a grainy, swinging kick-snare approach, whereas "The Bog" winds the tempo right down resulting in a wonderfully abstract vision of house and techno.

Much like "Reality" from that aforementioned release on Steffi's label, the four tracks here commence on a disco flecked tip with "Awake" which is filled with driving soulful strings and cracking drums. Classic Rhodes punctuate "Say It Now" whilst the flip shows a different side to the pairing with "Unknown Factor" heading into stab heavy techno territory, whilst title track "Yen" displays Martin and Barera's mastery of haunting atmospheres. Review: The Original Gravity label's Reggae Dynamite series sure is packed full of dance floor heat. This fourth volume turns up the temperature once more, starting with Dave Barker's 'Move It On Now' with spoken word mic work over a guitar laced riddim. Woodfield Rd Allstars bring plenty of big horn energy and hints of ska to their 'San Salvario Stomp' then appear again on the flip with the organ-lead sounds of mid tempo wobbler 'Norwegian Wood'. Review: Bart Skills is a veteran techno producer and Drumcode is a veteran techno label, but neither shows any signs of age here with Weska also joining in for a pair of highly potent and weaponised new cuts. They take up one side each and first is 'Something More' with its sweeping blasts of white noise, factory floor sound effects and unrelenting drums that will demolish any dancefloor. 'Palm Strings' then carries on the party with a more stripped-back sound initially, but eventually, the rising synths take over as the gritty drum loops pound away below. A pair of big room monsters for sure.

Review: Sundries' Disco Goodies series, which rounds up the best of the label's digital releases and presents them on multi-artist EPs, reaches its fourth instalment. It hits home hard from the start, where Berobreo's 'Soul Driven Dynamics' provides an attractive mix of 1970s orchestral soul samples and rubbery deep house beats. Experienced re-editor Oldchap brings the goods with a lightly tooled-up and beefed-up rework of an orchestra-sporting disco gem ('Coloridos'), before X Gets The Crest delivers a percussive, hot-stepping and filter-smothered re-wire of a much-loved Cymande classic ('Still Come Home'). Over on side B, Alexny's heavy disco-funk re-edit ('People Says') is joined by a hazy and horn-heavy revision courtesy of Sould Out ('City Gal') and the pitched-up disco loop-funk of 'Since You Came' by Workerz.

Review: A special vinyl-only remix couplet from Critical's bashment professor Sam Binga. First-up the ever-sharp Sully jungles the dickens out of the Warrior Queen-front "Wasted Days", adding a whole hurricane of energy through the crafty edited breaks and cool sense unpredictability. Flip for a trip to Livity Sounds circa 2013 where Pev & Kowton laid down a delicate synth jam and Sam craftily brings it up to around 160, adds a few fluttering twists but loses none of its crystalline soul. Review: Sam Binga has established himself with boundary-pushing club tracks on labels like Critical and Exit and for this one teamed up with Welfare, a junglist and the Rua Sound label boss. Together they were inspired by the rugged beauty of Conamara, County Galway and began the project in a 300-year-old cottage overlooking the sea in a place free of creature comforts but rich in inspiration. Using a handheld recorder, the duo explored tidal caves, ruins and windswept coastlines while recording the ambient sounds they heard on the way and then turned them into these deeply textured dub compositions through live desk mixing at Dubkasm's studio.

Review: This Tail Of Tears 12" sees WT Records boss William Burnett adopt the Black Deer name for the No Label series that intermittently emits from Rush Hour HQ. The somewhat mysterious No Label series acts as a primer for music that essentially transcends label or genre, and has issued the tape saturated meanderings of Inga Copeland, jagged ragga techno from Aardvarck and the heavily psychedelic electronics of Stellar Om Source. Ths Black Deer record from Burnett certainly adheres to the expect the unexpected ethos of the No Label series, offering a more experimental side to the New Yorker's production palette than last year's exceptional Willie Burns release for The Trilogy Tapes. Burnett himself calls the Tail Of Tears 12" the results of some experiments with "12 string acoustic guitar with effects and synth" whilst Rush Hour call it "sympathetic storytelling for the real Americans".

'Hard To Find' is one of her most well-known tunes and it pairs electronic reggae with prog rock guitars and her own soulful vocals. It's curious and compelling and has some funk deep in its bones. Review: An anthem with an early reggae riddim. Burning Spear was an alias for Winston Rodney, one of the most beloved Jamaican singers. 'Door Peeper' was originally released in 1969 on the Supreme label in Jamaica, and later on Bamboo in the UK. Rasta lyrics and musical motifs had been previously adapted for commercial release, but none sounded quite like this. Dissimilar to the fast instrumental reggae records that were resonating with white teenagers in England at the time, this was 'starkly uncompromising music that demanded to be taken on its own terms, or not at all.'

Review: Burning Spear & Roland Alphonso's 'Door Peeper' is a super sacred and classic tune. It's as deep as they come, with spiritual sax and impassioned vocals, and this version nails all that and then some. Brook's sax comes in half way through to really make the trip peak. The original was one of the many greats arranged by legendary guitarist Ernest Ranglin, with added trumpet from David Madden. On the reverse of this crucial 7" is Willie Williams's earthy 'All The Way' with its characteristic tumbling melodies and fat bottomed bass.

Warlock - "Too Late"
Review: Hard to pronounce, even harder to ignore and impossible not to like, Frijsfo continue to delve deeper and deeper into bass-tickled compositions with these four floor-friendly treats. Buzzin10 get sexy with a 4/4 garage cut that lays lush organs over a paranoid backdrop, Sully's "Feel It" takes us right back to the fuzzy two-step soundtrack to the turn of the century, Point B's "Comfort Zone" explores the icy messages of early Metalheadz via a Radioactiveman style bump n' shuffle breakbeat and Warlock closes the show on an awesome Vibert style acid wonk. Beautiful.

Disco/Reediciones
Latin Box (Marcos Cabral edit)
No Mistake (Kon 2079 mix)
Love Reaction (Jacques Renault edit)
Night Walker (WOOHOO mix)
Review: It's been a while since label bosses Cabral and Renault treated us to volume six but, as always with OTP, its well worth the wait. Cabral kicks off proceedings with a sludgy proto-house number that comes complete with some fantastic chopped up vocal work a la Kevin Aviance. Kon follows with a homage to the disco edit. Not to leave us languishing in the 70s for too long, "Love Reaction" whisks us forward to a packed warehouse in Chicago circa 1989. Big, roomy, boomy and laced with just the right amount of contemporary production, it's Renault at his darkest. "Night Walker" is the final piece of the edit puzzle; woozy, filtered and possibly the best example of a processed Cevin Fisher vocal ever, it's the ultimate funk finale.

Captain Tinrib vs Pierce Rooney - "The Whole Shit House"
Review: Hard hoover action from The Captain here on Paul Glazby's Vicious Circle label. On the A-side "The Scream" is a monster slab of hard house NRG with a hard rolling bassline, stabbing riffs, screaming acid lines then one almighty hoover riff. "The Whole Shit Houses" oozes more Captain Tinrib quality with more acid stabs, rolling bass and heavy hoover sounds.

Review: Royal Tunbridge Wells based purveyors of D&B and Jungle Reggae beats Unrulee are back, with some of their latest offerings from the label roster. The title track "Stand Like Warriors" is a life affirming anthem that hammers the message home in slamming junglist fashion. Rebel MC Blak Warriah proclaims the ultimate anthem to light up your life (so to speak) on the ferocious jump up stepper "Marijuana Mek Me High" while Kingston's finest Isha Bel steps up to the mic also, to represent on the absolutely fierce breakbeat science of "Mek Me Maad". Respect!

West Norwood Cassette Library - "Drop" (Knowing Looks remix)
Kevin McPhee - "In Circles" (Kamikaze Space Programme drum tool)
J Tijn - "Flat" (West Norwood Cassette Library remix)
Review: Issued back in late 2012, the first volume of We Are Family signalled the West Norwood Cassette Library's expansion from the 10" format to the 12" format and did it in style with cuts from Don Froth, Milyoo, label boss WNCL and Knowing Looks. Since then, Bob Bhamra's label has really stepped it further with 12"s from J Tijn, Spatial, Kevin McPhee and the excellently named Kamikaze Space Programme. It seems about the right time for a second volume of We Are Family and this 12" sees cuts from Bobby Champs, McPhee, J Tijn and West Norwood Cassette Library getting the remix treatment. The Drum Tool refix of McPhee's "Circles" from Kamikaze Space Programme and West Norwood Cassette Library's Remix of J Tijn on the B Side are proper!

Review: Oh my - it's number 35 in the RDY edits series, and that means an instant purchase, peeps! These never stick around for very long, and especially when they're as bad-ass as this latest one. So, quick recap, just in case you weren't aware, this series aims to recollect of all legend Ron Hardy's edits; these are the tunes that made house music famous at the infamous Musik Box in Chicago. Italian disco sensations Chaplin Band feature with a subtle edit of "Il Veliero", a melancholic yet charging disco oddity, and the flip quickly heads down more electronic territories with a touch-up of "She Don't Knw I Am Alive" by Willie Colon. Tony Cook & The Party People's "On The Floor" is given a good makeover with that solid, 4/4 beat that contains the dubbiest of drums around. Ya can't miss this...

Review: Future Retro will release a series of 12" delights from up and coming artists. We couldn't think of a better way to kick things off than with the talents of Polish wonder boys CLS and Wax. "Full Of Strange" is a production of epic proportions that builds into an amazing crescendo of sound before dropping the trademark CLS and Wax b-line.

Review: Spanish stable Satta Sounds get busy on their Tuff Cut TCR series once again, inviting a rabble of roustabouts to the table: Conscious Species, Dr Um, Wize & Deadly and Pastaman all lay down their uncompromised designs and it's another freestyle breakbeat frenzy. Highlights run rife from the opening flutters and skips of Conscious Species' 'Warming Up' to the walloping swing and funk of Pastaman's finale 'Take Your Time'. Don't take that title literally, either! This 12" is limited and likely to fly as fast as the breaks themselves.
