Step In To Our Life
Step In To Our Life (7") (1 per customer)
Cat: DYNAM 7062. Rel: 24 Jan 20
  1. Step In To Our Life (5:29)
  2. For Real (3:50)
Review: When it comes to offering up seven-inch singles of tracks taken from classic or sought-after albums, Dynamite Cuts has an impressive track record. They're at it again here, this time mining Roy Ayers and Wayne Henderson's 1978 jazz-funk/disco fusion masterpiece "Step Into Our Life". On the A-side you'll find the languid, loose and groovy title track, a memorable affair in which dueling vibraphone and trumpet solos make merry atop a head-nodding, toe-tapping jazz-funk groove. Flipside "For Real" is a little more energetic and loved-up, with touchy-feely vocals, husling slap-bass and sci-fi synths to the fore.

  1. Soul Brothers Six - "I'll Be Loving You" (2:18)
  2. Willie Tee - "Walkin' Up A One Way Street" (2:44)
Review: Outta Sight's latest monthly rare soul missive contains hard-to-find and overlooked classics from "hard-hitting" New Jersey vocal group Soul Brothers Six and New Orleans Rhythm and Blues man Willie Tee. It's the former's wonderfully sweet and loose "I'll Be Loving You" (first released in 1966, fact fans) that takes pride of place on the A-side, serving up a lightly sauteed soul take on the rhythm and blues template. Willie Tee's 1967 jam "Walking Up A One Way Street", a summery affair blessed with a superb horn section, leisurely groove and brilliant lead vocal from the man himself, can be found on the B-side.

I Could Have Been A Millionaire
Cat: ST 012. Rel: 07 Dec 20
  1. I Could Have Been A Millionaire (3:32)
  2. Let Your Love Shine Out (3:34)
Review: British singer/songwriter Tom Wardle has enjoyed rather a lot of success in the United States, though his star has yet to ascend in the UK. Perhaps this first ever vinyl outing, courtesy of New York imprint It's Soul Time, will change that. 'I Could Have Been a Millionnaire' sits somewhere between blue-eyed soul, Steely Dan style West Coast rock and glassy-eyed yacht-rock, with Wardle making his presence felt over a sweet, string-laden backing track. Arguably even better is boisterous and up-tempo flipside 'Let Your Love Shine Out', which sees the Nottingham-raised troubadour join the dots between Northern Soul, rhythm & blues and Crowded House.

Why I Came To California
Cat: LW 712015. Rel: 11 May 15
  1. Why I Came To California (4:09)
  2. Rockin' You Eternally (4:19)
Review: Released in celebration of Expansion's recent re-serving of two of Leon's early 80s albums - Rockin' You Eternally and Leon Ware - here's a delightful 45 that reminds us of his finest solo moments. "Why I Came To California" is a sun-kissed soul boogie groove with big horns and even bigger chorus. "Rockin' You Eternally" (which is, let's face it, one of the smoothest song titles to ever come from the 80s) showcases Leon's softer side. A ballad steeped in sentiment, play this loud enough and everyone in a five mile radius will stop and get smoochy.

  1. I Wanna Be Where You Are (3:34)
  2. Instant Love (with Minnie Riperton) (3:29)
Review: "I Wanna Be Where You Are" was a song written by Arthur Ross for Michael Jackson in 1972 and covered here by co-writer Leon Ware. It appeared on his 1976 album Musical Massage, released on Motown. The album featured guests such as Minnie Riperton (vocals on "Instant Love" the B-side cut featured here), Bobby Womack and of course Marvin Gaye - who ended up doing a cover also. Not to mention the likes of Zulema, Willie Hutch, Jason Weaver and later The Fugees. Ware and Ross also penned the classic Marvin Gaye hit, "I Want You" several years afterwards, in addition to working with Quincy Jones and Maxwell. Ware passed away in 2017, at the age of 77.

  2. I Found What I've Been Searching For (4:20)
Review: The considered crew of crate diggers and musical historians that is the Melodies International team returns with another vital piece that can make all out collections seem that bit more pro. In the spotlight this time is the gorgeous soul of La'verne Washington, who released this single, and this single only, at an unknown time in the past. The whole thing has been remastered by Floating Points and kicks off with the heart swelling joy of "The Promise" with its soaring vocals and rich musicality. "I Found What I've Been Searching For" slows things down to a more romantic and intimate mood, with lush chords and vulnerable vocals hitting a perfect sweet spot.

  2. The Astors - "Uncle Willie Good Time" (Djar One edit) (4:04)
Review: The 11th in Del Gazeebo and Aldo Vanucci's much loved Soul Flip Edits series has been long delayed. Djar One is behind it - and thousands of other releases in the last year, it seems, with more to come, reportedly. The tunes here are high speed, hard hitting funk and breakbeat reworks with tempos well over 145 and 135bpm respectively. The a-side is Mary Wells' northern soul banger 'Can't You See You're Losing Me' remixed with extra bump and on the reverse is a re-souled Astors gem 'Uncle Willie Good Time.' These are as hard and fast as they are great.

  2. Semi Automatic - "Let Me Be The One" (instrumental) (4:36)
Review: The rebirth of 1980s UK soul and reggae imprint Local Records continues apace with the reissue of another John Collins-produced gem from 1984. In signature Collins fashion, the A-side Jaye Williams version of "Let Me Be The One" portrays many of his reggae influences - think liberal use of delay and reverb, as well as a distinctive lilt to the super-sweet vocals - while basing the musical action around a sharp, rubbery backing track rich in fizzing electronics, spacey synths and post-boogie, electro-influenced drums. The flipside Semi-Automatic version is basically Collins' intergalactic soul rhythm track smothered in snaking saxophone solos, which is no bad thing.

  2. Show & Tell (3:29)
Review: The latest offering from Outta Sight's Soul Club seven-inch series is rather special. It offers a new edition of Al Wilson's infectious 1968 cover of Oscar Brown, Jr lassic 'The Snake' - a Johnny Rivers/Marc Gordon production that saw the late, great soul singer tell a rip-roaring shaggy dog story over a ridiculously funky backing track that features one of the most recognizable and life-affirming horn arrangements of all time. As it did way back in 1968, the song comes backed with a fine acoustic-soul cover of Willie Hutch song 'Getting Ready for Tomorrow'. Impeccably produced and performed, this heartfelt number is every bit as essential as the more club-ready A-side.

Outta Sight's done a great job here, and the quality is class, offering the original cut in all its majestic, romantic glory...oh, do we love this! Because Of You

  2. Doris & Kelley - "You Don't Have To Worry" (2:44)
Review: If you have ever tried to track down an original copy of this cult Northern Soul classic you will know it will cost you anywhere between L200 and L400 for the b-side, and around L80 for the a-side. They come from 1973 and 1967 respectively and are real classics of the genre now carefully, and cost-effectively, reissued by Deptford Northern Soul Club Records. The opening side is the sound of Jackie in fantastic form. 'Because Of You' is a truly pained tale of love that captures the intensity of such experiences perfectly.

Review: Spanky Wilson is one of the fiercest, sweetest voices in the golden era of late 60s / early 70s soul, with a modest but mighty mark left behind by her run of classic albums and later collaboration with The Quantic Soul Orchestra. This handy 7" gathers together two classic Wilson cuts, leading in with the heavyweight soul-funk of "You". On the flip is her evergreen cover of "Sunshine Of Your Love", which for our money bests Jack Bruce's original vocal performance to take the vintage track onto a whole other level of raw, passionate power.

Review: The Beats & Breaks 7" series was founded to satisfy the desires of DJs, mainly by serving up re-edits that put some of the world's most recognizable drum breaks front and centre. This edition kicks off with a rearrangement of the Winstons' "Amen Brother", whose drum break not only became a staple of U.S hip-hop in the 1980s, but also the foundation of jungle and later drum and bass. This edit wisely gives plenty of air time to the infamous drum break, dropping into it at frequent intervals in between bouts of punchy, horn-heavy funk. Flip to the B-side for a tastefully chopped and rearranged version of The Chosen Few's super-sweet 1976 soul cut "Candy I'm So Doggone Mixed Up".

Cat: MS 495. Rel: 03 Aug 20
  1. Tonight Is The Night (live version) (8:11)
  2. Where Is The Love (Disco Purrfection DJ Delight version) (8:00)
Review: The late, great Betty Wright sadly departed earlier this year, but she leaves behind a mighty legacy in the American soul canon. Among her most universally adored recordings is Betty Wright Live, released in 1978, and that's where High Fashion have turned for this full-bloom yellow 12" release. "Tonight Is The Night" is arresting in any form, but Wright's engaging intro with the crowd takes this version into a whole other realm. As a foil for the tenderness of the A side, the B side finds Ben Liebrand getting in on an edit of "Where Is The Love" that lets Wright's more fiery side shine through with a surefire floor filler.

Review: While most of the obscure old records being reissued by Floating Points' Melodies label fetch eye-wateringly high prices on the second-hand market, there's no doubt that they're all astonishingly good. This latest gem - a little-known 1974 7" from folk-soul songwriter Bobby Wright (now Abu Talib) - is another fantastic example. "Blood of an American", a sweet sounding but politically heavyweight song inspired by the singer-songwriter's opposition to the Vietnam War, is every bit as inspired as the works of that better-known folk-soul legend, Terry Callier. In fact, B-side "Everyone Should Have His Day" sounds like a long-lost Callier recording. As ever, the record is beautifully packaged and comes bundled with a 16-page "mini-zine" packed with interviews and articles about the record.

Review: Milton Wright's perfect deep Soul classic "Keep It Up" has always been a top shelf record, everything about it is almost flawless! Whether it's Milton's silky vocal delivery, the incessant guitar driven back beat or the total space Funk vibe of his omnipresent ARP-2600 synthesizer this record has it all. Originally released on TK Disco's more Soul and Funk orientated Alston label which was home to many legendary artists and records, this 1975 sunshine classic never fails to make people move. A classic rare groove indeed. "The Silence That You Keep" takes up side-B, a jazzy, flute driven love song that again features Milton's perfect voice and some fantastic arrangement. A real gem of a record, with the original 45 changing hands for over L100 a time in used condition.

Review: Japanese turntablist, crate-digger and producer Ryuhei The Man has been on fine form of late, offering up fresh revisions of some seriously dope old soul, disco and jazz-funk releases. Here he continues the trend by delivering a neat "45 Edit" of Miami Soul man Milton Wright's 1977 track "Be With Me". His version tightens things up a little, moving from groove-based sections before introducing Wright's superb vocals and the sing-along chorus. He's also been busy on the EQs, too, effectively re-mastering it a touch to suit modern dancefloors. You'll find Wright's breezy original - all glistening guitars, hazy horns and jaunty bass guitar - in full on the flipside.

Review: While Larry Wu's one and only single, 1984's "Let Me Show You", has long been considered an 80s boogie classic, it has remained surprisingly hard to find on 12" - hence this timely reissue. As with the original 12", Wu's sparkling Long Version is featured on the A-side. It's perhaps closer in tone to the chart-bothering Jam & Lewis '80s soul sound than the grittier, funkier New York boogie style - think chiming melodies, eyes-closed guitar riffs and a chunky synth-heavy groove - the quality of Wu's soulful lead vocal really is in the top tier. There's also another chance to check the fantastic, dub style flipside Instrumental, which features all manner of dropouts, delay-laden vocal snippets, jammed-out synth solos and slighty more floor-friendly percussion. Essential.

Review: At the time of his passing in 2017, the late, great soul star Leon Ware was working on a new album with long-time collaborator Taylor Graves. Although he never finished it, Be With has decided to put together a final posthumous album that contains the five songs he finished for the set - which, impressively, include cameos from the likes of Kamasi Washington and Thundercat - and six cuts from an obscure, Japan-only CD from 2013. It's a wonderful listen from start to finish, with the Latin-tinged soul-jazz of "For The Rainbow", the head-nodding boogie business of "Sigh" and the synth-laden, strangely swung brilliance of "Are You Ready" amongst the highlights.

Review: The recently departed Leon Ware is the undisputed king of boogie. The man has released some of the most foundational albums of the disco offshoot genre, and it's probably thanks to him that we've even got electro blasting out of speakers these days. Be With reissued his fourth LP, from 1981, the timeless Rockin' You Eternally, which is a must-have for pretty much anyone who is into ANY style of dance music. In short, it's the absolute truth. "A Little Boogie (Never Hurt No One)" is basically the tune which gave boogie its name in the first place, all bouncy and full of electronic bass, while the rest of the A-side, made up utter classics like "Baby Don't Stop Me" or "Our Time", provides some of the most driving, heartfelt disco-soul known to man. The title track, "Rockin' You Eternally" is as sensual as it is masterfully produced, but our favourite has to be "Don't Stay Away, a luscious, string-led disco monster with an early electronic edge. This is some pioneering business, right here. Elektra's finest.
