Ich Traume So Leise Von Dir
Cat: MFM 015. Rel: 17 Nov 16

Balearic/Downtempo
Mein Tanzlied (5:06)
Dir (4:49)
Der Schnupfen (4:47)
Abends (4:24)
Review: Once again, Music From Memory has dug deep for inspiration. Very few will have come across the original 1987 pressing of Ich Traume So Leise, a long-forgotten collaborative album that brought together trumpet player Heinz Becker, songwriter Karl-Heinz Stegmann, and poet Isabel Zeumer. Predictably, though, the tracks which the Dutch label has chosen to reissue are exceptionally good. "Mein Tanzlied", for example, features Becker's meandering trumpet lines and Zeumer's eyebrow-raising spoken word vocals seemingly drifting over an intoxicatingly funky, mid-80s dancefloor groove, while "Dir" is a seriously atmospheric chunk of beatless jazz poetry. Flip for the Balearic electro-funk of "Der Schnupfen" and the languid, new age ambience of "Abends".

Smash N Grab (Bluey remix) (6:22)
Wildfire (Al Kent remix) (10:43)
Review: Jazz-funk twosome Zamie (Jadie Kiggundu AKA Ziggy Funk and pal Jamie McShane) impressed with their recent album, Fortuitous. On this EP, two of the set's most potent cuts have been given the remix treatment with club dancefloors in mind. Incognito main man Bluey handles side A, offering up a smooth, groovy and musically detailed take on 'Smash N Grab' that peppers a slap-bass-propelled groove with spacey synth pads, jammed out Rhodes stabs and all manner of life-affirming electric piano solos. Over on side B, Glaswegian veteran Al Kent takes 'Wildfire' down the disco, turning in a near 11-minute, Tom Moulton style rub rich in punchy synth-horns, snaking sax solos and spacey synth solos aplenty. Colourful, grown-up disco with a jazz-funk flex... more please!

Everlasting (5:42)
Review: ZAN's latest album is currently 26 in the UK soul chart s it's no wonder the label it came on has pressed up this 12" with a couple of mixes of one of its standout tunes on as well as a new jam. The first is an extended mix of 'Follow My Heart' that has timeless synth soul and lush boogie disco drums with wet claps and cowbells a plenty. Then comes Bangsy's 808 disco mix which is a little more blissed out and low-slung with funky guitar riffs and lovely vocal hooks. Also included is the new cut 'Everlasting' which is a dubbed-out, reverb-drenched street soul stepper with retro keys to melt the heart.

Disco Facial
Self Isolated
Review: Zapatilla, better known as Louis Hackett, is a founding member of Brownswood 's Owiny Sigoma Band and key collaborator on Eska's Mercury nominated debut album, but has a neat side hustle making house music with one foot in the gentle melodies of Balearic beat and another in the irresistible energy of Afrobeat. It's a recipe that he continues over onto this fine four tracker, which opens with the smoothly grooving but lively 'Like Dat' before 'Zimzimmer' builds up around a gently frenetic Afro guitar riff. On the flip, 'Disco Facial' is slower and more retro, with a synth line that could be from a lost John Carpenter soundtrack. 'Self Isolated' completes the package in its most esoteric fashion, another synth work rooted in the past, this time perhaps echoing the approachable experimentalism of Jean Jacques Perry.

Review: Zarkoff taps into myriad different sources for inspiration here - there are swirling vocals that remind of Bowie, chilly synths from Depeche Mode and lithe beats from the contemporary underground. It's all crafted from melancholic synths as the heavenly voices soar up top and hypnotic drum machine beats lock in the groove. It makes for music that is both suited to more cultured club sets but also home listening sessions. 'Bureau Degradation' is our favourite for the slightly speedier beats and more pained vibes of the synths. A brilliantly original EP, wherever you look.

All Things Done (Chinaski remix) (5:19)
Quarter 25 (SIRS remix) (6:03)
Review: XXX is back with a steamy 16th EP and it features two original tracks by Anastasia Zems & Radial Gaze on the A-side, with remixes from Chinaski & S.I.R.S. on the B-side. The originals are characterised by dark industrial vibes, sharp kicks, and throbbing yet playful basslines that will persuade any dance floor to get throwing shapes. On the flip side, Chinaski's remix takes an unexpected turn as a trance-like trip that climbs higher and faster with each beat. S.I.R.S. offers a contrasting disco remix with an irresistibly groovy bassline, and just as irresistible is the playful artwork by Gees Voorhees that perfectly captures the eclectic nature of this EP.

Witches (3:03)
Witches '85 (Bedmo Disco Spell Of Love) (6:34)
Review: Bedford-based trio Zenana never made much of an impact when they were first active in the 1980s but have become the toast of the world's media following the rediscovery of their excellent, Italo and Hi-NRG-influenced 1986 synth-pop single, 'Witches', by crate diggers a couple of years back. Here that fine track, originally produced in terraced house in Cornwall by the brother of bandmember Anita Tedder, gets the reissue treatment on Rush Hour's RSS series - thanks, in no small part, to a new (but authentically 80s sounding) extended remix from long-established Bristol DJ/production duo Bedmo Disco. Their flipside 'Spell of Love' version strips back and stretches out the track, taking cues from NYC proto-house, Martin Rushent dubs and mid-80s Shep Pettibone remixes. It's the 12" dance mix the song never had first time round.

Review: False Aralia is a new self-titled label from Brian Foote (of Peak Oil, Kranky, etc.) that launches with "a series of recordings growing in all directions" and that draws together the work of artists from North America who are centred around the studio practices of Izaak Schlossman. Zero Key is the first 12" and it opens with a blend of spread synths, dubby undercurrents and microhouse rhythms. Pained vocals drift in and out of focus. There is a hallucinogenic quality to some of the sounds and an aquatic feel to the way the subtle and supple grooves unfold. It is otherworldly music that is rooted in real-world emotion.

Review: The Metalheadz train shows no signs of slowing down despite being well into its third decade. This tasty four tracker comes from the combined creative minds of Zero T and Beta 2 and they come through in style with a modern-day reproduction of the vintage Metalheadz sound we all know and love. Tough drums, sprinkled with plenty of future soul and devastating bass, "Misdemeanour" in particular is prickly yet emotional stuff while "In My Head" brings a dose of joyful soul and "Dead Cert" ends on a more angsty tip.

First up is Pedro Zopelar, known not only for his work with the anarchic-techno-punk act Teto Preto, but also for the project My Girlfriend and his solo LP - both on Funkineven's Apron Records. Novaterra Vol 1 features the hi-tech jazz of 'Livre', the off-kilter funk of 'Dias Tensos' is wonderfully disorienting, while the UK broken beat influence of Bugz In The Attic or Atjazz are clearly evident on tracks like 'Modo Aviao' or the bittersweet 'Boogie Da Paz'.

Review: The fertile South African house scene keeps on giving rise to brand new goodness. Token is a label whose mission it is to bring such sounds to the wider world and this second EP is another winner. 'Stay' immediately gets you dreaming of warm climates and gorgeous sunsets before 'Set It' picks up the pace but keeps the pads warm and fuzzy and the bass elastic and deep. There is spiritual vocal faire on the cosy 'A Winters Night' and a melodic masterclass on 'The World Order' that is steeped in US house tradition but brings something fresh.

Review:  Zy The Way hail from Taiwan and are recognised as pioneers of the jazz scene in Asia. Their signature style is to infuse their work with ancient Chinese poetry and their first outing 'A Different Destiny,' reimagined 3,000-year-old poems curated by Confucius and earned them plenty of plaudits. Now, they unveil two EPs as a prelude to their upcoming album. Collaborating with renowned remixers who operate at the jazz-electronic crossroads, they present 'Ten Acres' with a remarkable remix by Mark de Clive Lowe. Maintaining jazz's essence while igniting the dancefloor, this EP bridges East and West, past and present and shows Zy The Way as a transformative musical force who are pushing boundaries.

Review:  Given the respective outputs of committed ambient explorers and sound designers zake (best known for releasing no less than five fine albums in 2019) and 36 (most recently seen on A Strangely Isolated Place with the superb album "Fade To Grey"), you'd expect this trip into aural deep space to be rather good. It is of course, with the four tracks mixing echoing sonic tones and drifting sound effects with slow-burn electronic melodies and the kind of immersive, sustained chords that were once the preserve of German maestro Pete Namlook. The third track in the suite, appropriately titled 'Stage 3', is little less than stunning, in part because of its grandiose, almost classical intent. No surprise to discover, then, that after a stretch of being out of print it's back via a reissue, this version being a limited clear vinyl edition.

This time, they return with the Paris compilation, driven by the sounds of some of Europe's finest. Among our favourites on here, we have the opener, Saverio Celestri's majestic "Interstellar", a hybrid trip between house and industrial electro that sounds as if it were cut straight from the machines through which it was conceived; "Rob In The Hood" by Seuil is another sublime slice of grainy, stripped-back dance music with a clear ode to the coldwave scene, and Alex Picone's "Sunday" provides a charming, graceful analogue house cut with a broken rhythm and some glorious background sonic manipulation. He came into the scene in the mid-nineties and took part in squat parties on the banks of the Obvodny Canal before raving at The Tunnel, Russia's first proper techno club. Soon after starting to DJ himself he played on Port FM and became a core part of the early Russian techno scene. This album is the first time his music has been on wax and it features music that Azelitskiy made during 1995 - 2005, except for the track My 40th Vesna, produced in 2010. It is truly original and hard to define as it traverses tempos, textures and genres with ease.

Review: It would be fair to say that Dave Holland, Zakir Hussain and Chris Potter are not your average jazz trio. For starters, we can't think of many other trios comprised of a double bassist, a tabla player and a saxophonist. It's a musical line-up that guarantees intriguing, intoxicating and exotic music, as "Good Hope" emphatically proves. There's something genuinely alluring about the trio's combination of intricate table rhythms, inventive and off-kilter double bass lines, and sax solos that wind their way around both like a fell runner zig-zagging his or her way up a windswept mountainside. It's jazz, Jim, but not as we know it.

Review: Since being founded in 2013 in Rome, Sonor Music Editions has become a treasure trove of archival music that was originally made for films, radio and television. The mysterious Mandrassi & Zollinger, here backed by the I Beati studio band, cooked up one such killer but hitherto unknown library session, Rhythm & Sound, back in 1973. Andreassi is said to one of the first female library music composers and likely the release of this album is going to change how she is perceived. It's packed with endless breaks, superb funk grooves and plenty of chasing beats with a loose, live jam session feel that makes it all the more vibrant.

Review: 'Tenor Conclave' is an unusual and specific kind of release, but that's exactly why we've stocked it. A four-track album of long form jazz bits, each song comes courtesy of one of jazz's best-known tenor sax greats: Al Cohn, John Coltrane, Hank Mobley and Zoot Sims. With each recording hailing from the tail end of the 1950s, we're bowled over by each original here like breathy brass blasts from the past; te quartet's rendition of the jazz standard 'How Deep Is The Ocean' is our fave, rounding off the EP with peculiarly noir depth.

Review: Pellegrino & Zodyaco's skillfully intertwine Neapolitan disco, funk, jazz and world music while channelling a spirit of creative escape of this new album, which is inspired by Henri Laborit's 'Eloge de la fuite'. It explores conscious escapism as a return to authenticity and seeks a "common language" through sound by merging Mediterranean melodies with global rhythms, vintage instruments and ethnic percussion that all bridge past and present. Four years after his last outing, Morphe, Pellegrino is still in top form here with a soulful, genre-blurring portrait of modern Naples that reflects the fact that, in the city, musical traditions meet modern experimentation.

Review: Eary Sounds boss Pellegrino S. Sinchelotto founded the Zodyaco project two years as an umbrella for his ongoing studio collaborations with an ever-changing cast of musicians, vocalists and producers. Morphe, the project's second full-length excursion, continues in a similar vein to its predecessor, offering a similarly attractive mix of tracks that effortlessly blur the boundaries between mid-80s Balearic synth-pop, jazz-funk, zouk, Afro-cosmic, AOR disco and intergalactic boogie. With quality musicianship, colourful melodic motifs and accurately depicted period details to the fore, it's the sort of set that would now be considered a Balearic classic had it been released in 1885 rather than 2020. In other words, Morphe is an album you need in your life right now.

Review: The mythical Warp figurehead whose greatness is only matched by the one of AFX returns to his native label with a mysterious new clan who go by the name of Z Machines. Things like this always get our mouths salivating and especially when the music of this quality and diversity! "Remote Amber" shifts things into gear on a purely future jazz vibe, with "Sad Robot Goes Funny" then going in with a Hancockian synth solo and some truly nutty break chops. "World Three" spins the previous track on its head thanks to improvisational piano keys, whereas "Dissolve" forms a more concrete structure and "You Endless" ties things off on a downtempo tip. All in all, this is exciting new stuff from the legend.

Across the 11 jams he combines squelchy analogue boogie sounds with cosmic disco energy and low slung funk swagger with help from some of the finest producers in the game such as XL Middleton. The highlights come thick and fast from the sensors 'Around My Way' to the more dusty hip-hop styles of 'Agony' and jazzed up future retro sounds of 'Lil Dutchie'.

Review: European techno powerhouse Rekids welcomes back Minneapolis-raised DJ and producer Dustin Zahn for a second album seven years after his last. Gain of Function is a perfect fir for this label with its muscular drums, elastic bass and driving sense of techno warmth. Every track here is economical but never minimal: the way Zahn crafts his sounds means each one makes its own impact, be it a well treated vocal, a hammering kick drum or a serene synth that backlights a track. There are deeper moments like 'Smoking In Silence' next to more tripped out head-fuckery such as 'Shark Rodeo' and it all makes for a fantastic full length.

As a result, listeners can expect to hear babbling brooks, birdsong and the gentle rustling of leaves beneath Zake's alluring mixture of enveloping ambient chords, unearthly drone tones, opaque electronics and slowly-shifting, heavily processed neo-classical movements. The results are hugely immersive and undeniably enjoyable, with each of the four tracks delivering a head-in-the-clouds journey that ripples with becalmed, atmospheric intent. In other words, it's the kind of ambient music you can get lost in. More please!

We're glad to finally have the second instalment in the series available because there has rarely been music as cathartic and soothing as this on our shelves. It's made from drones, field recordings and richly layered movements of fragmented orchestral loops. It is heavily inspired by the sound of the greatest minimalist symphonic composers and orchestras of the last 100 years and comes in several different colours. This version is a transparent rose vinyl LP and download code.

He dropped the first volume of his Orchestral Tape Studies way back in 2019, and finally follows it up now with a second volume. Once again this is a selection of richly layered movements of fragmented orchestral loops that all pay homage to minimalist symphonic composers and orchestras and makes use of field recordings as well as gentle drones to soothe your soul.

Review: The most prolific man in all of music (maybe, but probably) is zake aka Zach Frizzell, and now he returns to his own Past Inside The Present label with yet another essential piece of work. Veta finds him crafting a world veiled in smoky half-tones that mirror the muted mystery of his compositions. As he often does, he fuses modern ambient classical with analogue production and conjures up thoughts of ceremonial divinity, healing and protection and offers a place to go and find solace from the pains of the world. There are both deft synths and purposefully layered pads that blend the organic and synthesised into solemn explorations, foreboding shadows and bells of despair. Another absorbing work from the maestro.

Review: zake's latest album, Dolere, unfolds meticulously over 70 minutes and invites you deep into his signature blend of detailed, harmonic drone. Inspired by the suspended weight of unchangeable emotions, the first movement drifts on melancholy waves all enveloped in analogue hiss and tape samples that echo a wandering mind's ceaseless pondering. The title track shifts mood with darkly-tinged drones and subtle field recordings that progress deliberately like shadows in a forest. Both pieces offer refuge from life's relentless pace and resonate like sonic Rorschach Tests or meditative soundscapes. Positioned alongside ambient greats like Thomas Koner, this is another essential album in a long line of them from this ambient titan.

It has four long and widescreen tracks inspired by natural elements like weather, erosion and decay and finds Teixeira using the Lyra-8 analogue synth to create generative, living sound textures then Frizzell randomly assembled these stems to form a new and dynamic composition. Tracks like 'Thence' offer intense, swirling soundscapes with tactile strings and field recordings, while 'Dross' and 'Hewn' explore evolving synth harmonies and fuzzy textures. The album culminates with 'Quel' which is a powerful end to Wind Rust which merges natural forces and human emotion into a deeply immersive sounds.

Review: eve is the debut collaboration between Past Inside the Present label head zake and Benoît Pioulard captures the serene magic of a quiet December night. Spanning four side-length tracks, the album grew from a decade of sound fragments all layered up "like family album photos." zake shaped the sonic base while Pioulard added textures with guitar, voice, dulcimer, melodica and synths. The title track evokes a wintry stillness with low swells and turntable crackles, while 'Frost' drifts on reverent vocals and shimmering drones. 'Pine' conveys forest mystery and 'Slept' closes with haunting loops and a delicate resolution like snowfall on an open field.

Review: A new double cassette box from Past Inside The Present, which sees its co-founder zake in relatively rare solo mode mixing soothing ambient sensibilities with orchestral, classical influences. 'Dernier Souffle (Pt 1)' is a great example of how the two can meld very easily and comfortably, a sense of slowly retreating heartache creeping over its open, slabs of floating sounds, whereas the three parts of 'La Paix Eternelle (Pt 1), on the other hand, evoke heavenly choirs of angels. An album with its head in the clouds, for sure, but once you join it there you won't want to come down.

Review: Zake and City of Dawn return to their longstanding collaboration for a new album, 'Agape', delivering a slow-droning album that bucks the trend of ambient's original purpose as background music. The Texas-Indiana duo steadily eases into great time-dilated deluges of sound, slowing everything down, yet not giving into pure depth, spanning both high and low frequencies. A natural theme is unearthed across the six pieces, producing a sublime soundscape reminiscent of Steve Roach, Bvdub or GAS meeting the thematic motifs of Shelley or Wordsworth.
