Review: Omar S does what he wants, so we are often treated to some surprises on his FXHE label that come seemingly out of nowhere. If they come with his stamp of approval, though, that is enough for us to find them intriguing, at the very least. This one is from Dastardly Kids aka Sonny Dulphi and Pat2Dope and they bring hi tech styles to hip-hop. The sounds are raw and twisted, with spoken-word bars over dense layers of synth and drums on opener '4 Every Day Dastardly'. There is a metallic feel to the icy cold and sleazy beats of 'Bu$$ The Bank', more depth to 'Pesos' which has a cloud rap vibe and more stoned and late night vibes to 'Dastardly Love Song'. A fresh double 7" for sure.

Q-Tip's truly sone cold 'Breathe & Stop' is up first with its wigging basslines and crispy drum breaks The bars up top are smooth as you like and oft-sampled. Flip it over for the Redman joint 'Smash Sumthin'' with its splashy cymbals and hard-hitting drums underpinned by menacing bass and crowds of 'murder.' Review: We now know that Daman Albarn's face-less and animated Gorillaz project was way ahead of its time. The tunes still stand up, too, with early hit 'Clint Eastwood' one of the best they did. It gets pressed dup here to this cheeky and limited 7", its low slung and downbeat groove topped with dub harmonicas and the drawling vocals of Albarn. Review: Easily two of the most unique, eccentric and absurd artists in modern hip-hop; the much whispered about collaborative album from Danny Brown and JPEGMAFIA finally lands on wax, and does its utmost to live up to the apt, meme-reflective title of Scaring The Hoes. Fully produced in house by JPEGMAFIA, the beats are stark, minimal, caustic and often impenetrable, whilst the two frenetic MCs go toe to toe, back and forth, and constantly attempt to one-up the other with bizarre bars, unhinged delivery and a hazy, drugged out audible aesthetic designed to clear out any party and scare away all proverbial hoes. Alternative hip-hop rarely gets as outsider or purposefully obtuse as this warped meeting of minds.

Review: Originally released in 2016, just one year after his major label breakout GO:OD AM; the fourth LP from the late, great Mac Miller showcased a remarkable pivot from quick-witted, slightly offensive alternative hip-hop bangers to a more introspective and vulnerable style of neo-r&b. Written whilst in a relationship with pop megastar Ariana Grande (who also features on the record as well as being credited for the inspiration to the track 'Cinderella'), the project focuses on both external romantic love as well as love of the self and one's surroundings. With an impressive guestlist featuring Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak and Ty Dolla Sign, and exuding Miller's first declarative foray into more nuanced, melodic and lush soundscapes, the album remains an outlier in an immensely expansive discography, which sadly still feels as if it was only just beginning to blossom before Miller's tragic and untimely passing.

Review: The Alloy Cuts label is back with another sweet 45rpm that collides some of the greats of hip-hop past into two new fusion and mash-up jams designed to do plenty of damage to dancefloors. First up is Jurasoc 5 vs Booty Haul with 'Divided Conformelution' which has some sick low ends and booming kicks overlaid with funky guitar riffs and hard bars. Booty Haul's 'Conformstumental' then appears on the flip side as the original sample source for the a1. It's more physical with the bars stripped away and still has plenty of raw funk.

Review: A collaborative album made and released by Mike Patton and NYC's hip-hop DJ trio the X-Ecutioners, General Patton vs. The X-Ecutioners is a landmark album in the big-smoked turntablists' discog, thanks to its then-newfangled embrace of elements of two nascent genres: free jazz and glitch. In fact, the album is themed around a war between the two vastly different styles, which makes it a worthy, but lesser-known contemporary to many other artists fusing the styles at the time, such as Amon Tobin. However, this album is more in the vein of Wu-Tang than future angst; this reissue via Ipecac serves to rejolt its underground infamy.

It comes on red and black splatter vinyl and features plenty of signature boom-bap produciton, future soul vibes and classic jazz references as well as deep house, boogie and funk overtones to make it rhythmically playful and stylishly diverse, but unified by the superb mic work.
