Review: Over the last few years, Charlotte Adigery and Bolis Pupol have been amongst Deewee's most successful artists, regularly collaborating with label founders Soulwax on singles that blur the boundaries between synth-pop, electronic funk and more forthright dancefloor workouts. Topical Dancer, the pair's collaborative debut album, follows the same winning formula - Soulwax once again share co-writing and production duties - with a unifying theme: their experiences of being people of colour in a predominantly white Anglo-Saxon nation (in their case Belgium, though Adigery has said that the US and the UK were also in her thoughts). The results are never less than inspired, with strong songs aplenty, brilliant production and enough subtle musical shifts to please heads.

Review: Babyhead are certainly one of the UK's fastest-growing independent acts. Their appeal cannot be defined by one aspect alone. It's not just the combination of the horn section with turntable deck-sterity that gets any crowd's attention and it's not just the infectious nature of heavy dub bass and ska chops over a hip-hop backbeat that gets them moving. Nor is it the cutting edge lyricism delivered with unwavering tenacity that holds you until the encore. Babyhead has an intangible quality but have often been summed up by one word - energy; with their own Ringmaster MC Mancub leading this nine piece from the front. It's this energy combined with their unique sound, song writing skills and showmanship that has been catching the attention of the industry. Roni Size, Michael Franti and Ozomatli are just some of the names in their ever-growing fan base. "Babyboom Town" shows a whole other dimension to a band known for their live shows. Thirteen songs take the listener on a journey through urban landscapes, collective consciousness and the human condition. Deftly fusing a cacophony of ska, hip-hop, blazing brass, heavy bass and sardonic wit. Dealing with topics of love, war and table manners, this is full of honest, funny and at times scary observations of life at the beginning of a new century.

Review: Unfairly labelled as a novel curio when they first emerged, the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band is a genuine expression of Mighty Mocambos man Bjorn Wagner's love of Trinidadian steel pan music. Their tracks - often, but not always, quirky cover versions - combined authentic funk instrumentation (drums, bass, guitar, horns) with the timeless and distinctive sound of steel drums. BRSB, the combo's fourth album, is another summery and effortlessly entertaining treat. Highlights include the inspired 'Love For The Sake of Dub' (an organic interpretation of Claudja Barry's slo-mo disco classic 'Love For The Sake of Love'), the breaker-friendly cheeriness and heaviness of 'Grilled', a wonderfully woozy and dubbed out stroll through the 'Stranger Things Theme', and the summer sunshine of 'Champion's Walk'.

Talk Meaning
Review: Arriving five years after their previous album, IV, Talk Memory sees Badbadnotgood pitch up on XL Recordings for the first time with what could be their most potent full-length yet. It's certainly their most expansive, adventurous and cinematic set so far, both in musical scope (it includes more nods towards post-rock and jazz-rock, for example) and sound (multiple tracks feature contribitions from Brazilian string arranger Arthur Verocai). It's a dazzling album all told, with the band's choice of improvisational composition techniques and an impressive guest list (Laraaju, Karriem Roggins, Terrace Martin and Brandee Younder all appear) resulting in a string of epic, life-affirming compositions. Picking highlights is tough, but we'd suggest checking slow burn, constantly building epic 'Signal to the Noise' and the buzzing, psychedelic jazz-rock of 'Beside April'.

Review: In early 2024, contemporary jazz cats BADBADNOTGOOD reported that they returned to the studio energised by recent international shows and collaborations with artists like Daniel Caesar, Charlotte Day Wilson and Baby Rose. The Canadian trio of Al Sow, Chester Hansen and Leland Whitty then joined with friends including Felix Fox-Pappas, Kaelin Murphy and Tyler Lott for an intensive recording week at Los Angeles' Valentine Studios. The result was the Mid Spiral series which explores distinct themes of Chaos, Order and Growth. Released initially in three digital parts, this genre-blending project now arrives on CD via XL and is another superb listen that explores how their roots in instrumental jazz fuse with hip-hop, neo-soul and funk.

Review: Having teased the jazz fraternity with a cheeky 7" earlier on this year, Andrea assuages our ears with this super smooth full lengther. Pristinely polished and produced with a big band feeling, there's a distinct Rat Pack feeling as we stride confidently through big choruses and sassy sambas ("I Will Never Stop Loving You") before diving headfirst into mournful smoky saxophone and piano laments ("The Meaning Of Love"). A common face performing on the French Riviera, hopefully this should take Balducci to the broader audience he deserves...

Review: Two years on from the release of their fantastic debut album, Wolo So, Balimaya Project returns with more inspired fusions of polyrhythms, percussion, heady horns, "virtuosic kora styles", contemporary jazz and traditional Mande music. It's a uniquely sweet, deep and gently sun-soaked sound - all emotive vocals, tapped out tribal rhythms, frazzled solos, dreamy acoustic guitars, glistening highlife-influenced electric guitars and sultry, soulful intent. The London-based collective has long been hard-to-pigeonhole, and it's this impeccably realised but sonically adventurous approach - along with the quality of their musicianship - that's been the key to their success. When The Dust Settles will only enhance their rising reputation - it really is that good!

Tongan Steel
Review: The Bamboos, an Australian funk six piece, are big funk collectors and inspired by artists such as The Meters, Mickey & the Soul Generation, Jimmy Smith and Reuben Wilson, but have a contemporary deep funk sound too. "Rawville" still embraces the deep raw organ based funk aesthetic of their album "Step It Up", but it also embraces different flavours. "Rawville" is a lot more song-based than "Step It Up". The album is half vocal based tunes and half instrumental. Vocals include those from label mate Alice Russell as well as vocalists Kylie Auldist, Tyra Hammond (Opens Souls), Fallon Williams and Ohmega Watts (Ubiquity). The Bamboos took a larger horn section into the studio for this album, so the horns are thicker and more experimental in terms if harmonies. You will hear influences from the JB's, Alice Clark, and early Kool & The Gang coming through on the horn arrangements.

Three Things To Remember
Review: The debut album of Ane Oestergaard, "Anish Music", is a wonderful mix of melodic electronica, pop, drum & bass, children's music and a little bit of happy hardcore. An engaging mix of styles that keeps the interest up for the duration of the LP - quirky enough to draw the listener in, but never too 'crazy' to distract from the beautiful melodies and intricately programmed beats that run throughout. A great debut from this young artist whom we hope to be hearing more from soon.

Review: Chris Bangs is a legendary figure within the UK jazz-dance scene whose extensive CV includes coining the term 'Acid Jazz'. While he's always been more of a DJ than a producer, his occasional musical outings are always on-point. 'Firebird' is his first solo album since 2008, though it was naturally created with the help of an impressive cast-list of experienced musicians. It was intended to be a collection of dancefloor-friendly tracks that explore his major musical influences - Latin jazz, jazz-funk, Brit-funk, jazz-fusion and so on - and in that regard he's hit the brief. The set's many highlights include the sun-splashed Brazilian heat of 'Samba Do Sueno', the up-tempo, extra-percussive heat of 'Firebird' and a brilliant Batacuda style cover of 'Kitchen (Cosina)' by Dom Un Romao.

Infusing Afro-Latin rhythms with electronic elements, Bangs creates a vital soundtrack to a steamy dance floor session in tropical weather and humid atmospheres, all of which pulse with infectious energy. Driven by hypnotic beats and vibrant melodies, Bangs showcases his mastery of groove and texture, weaving layers of percussion and synths into a dynamic tapestry of sound that will unite dancers with its global appeal.

Review: Little Maurice Jones was born deep in a Louisiana in 1932. While he grew up in a family of guitar pickers, he gravitated towards banging things constantly at a very early age, much to his momma's dismay and annoyance. Eventually, he made his way to the drums, although he can play pretty much any instrument and will sing if coaxed or bribed appropriately. While some so-called "critics". without any real sense of music. have on occasion opined that he's a little too heavy on the bass drum, it's Mudfoot's signature style and the quirk which gave him his nickname. One day at a recording session, the engineer called out, "Hey Mudfoot! Can you turn it down some, son!" Ever since that fateful afternoon, the name "Mudfoot" has stuck to Jones like glue.

Having produced hits for artists such as Ultra Nate, Crystal Waters and Mass Order and remixing tracks by Michael Jackson, Erykah Badu, Angie Stone and Lenny Kravitz as well as knocking out underground classics under the names of 33 1/3 Queen and Those Guys, it's no surprise that The Basement Boys are regarded as pioneers of American dance music. Synonymous with the deep house and garage scene of the mid nineties, the boys have also lent their golden touch to more contemporary artists such as Shaun Escoffery, Marcell Russell and Bob Sinclair.

Here the boys delve deep into their soul, jazz and Latin roots to concoct the perfect setting for Mudfoot to do his thing. The end result is a magical mix of the blues, jazz, gospel and Latin rhythms.

Review: Beat Spacek aka Steve Spacek is a man who has seen it all and done it all. Well, not quite all because this latest project is quite possibly his best in recent years. Having worked with artists as diverse as J Dilla and dBridge, his sound is characterised by a hugely varied conglomeration of styles and influences, but also methods. For instance, we've been told that this LP is made up exclusively of sounds generated from iPhone and iPad apps, so it's easy to see the man's versatility and openness to new sonic territories. "Modern Streets" itself is an intricate cocktail of ideas, incorporating remnants of drum & bass, digital dancehall and curb-side poetry. The whole LP is a daring and successful view into Spacek's multifaceted mind as a musician. Recommended.

Review: It's hard to pin down exactly what Bebo Baldan aka Bebo Best actually does. Musically, he's clearly inspired by easy listening, library music, jazz, swing, bossa-nova and Cuban grooves, but his productions have a chunky swing and hip-hop sensibility that should appeal to DJs who like their beats breaksy. Saronno On The Rocks is his third album with the (presumably mythical) Super Lounge Orchestra. It's an entertaining, dancefloor-friendly set that breezily leaps between his favoured sounds and styles. There's electro-swing ("Sing Sing"), overblown big band Latin jazz ("Havana Jazz Dance"), plenty of tongue-in-cheek bossa and even a delightfully silly cover of Monty Norman's James Bond theme. Think Senor Coconut doing funk breaks, and you're close.

Review: While Jim Jupp's work as the Belbury Poly has always touched on pagan imagery, clandestine atmospherics and vintage electronics - with a dash of pastoral instrumentation thrown in from time to time - it's fair to say that he's never released an album quite like The Path, his seventh full-length excursion. Recorded with the help of a band of musicians - bass, guitar, flute, clarinet and piano all feature alongside his familiar analogue and modular synth sounds - and a narrator (poet and spoken word artist Justin Hopper), the album manages to be atmospheric and alluring whilst also being loose and groovy - all re-imagined folk-rock, eyes-closed psychedelia, breezy jazz and library music chic. It will surprise some fans, for sure, but it's a genuinely fantastic album and a huge step forward from a producer who's not content to just plough the same musical furrow.

Review: It's some eight years since electronic soul outfit Belleruche released their debut 7" on Hippoflex. Since then, they've become one of Tru Thoughts' most reliable acts, delivering a series of albums that join the dots between nu-jazz, funk, soul and wide-eyed downtempo beats. Highligthts are plentiful, from the string-laden soul shuffle of "3 Amp Fuse" and jazz-flecked bump of "Minor Swing", to the lo-fi soul-rock of "Stormbird" and the downtempo beats of "16 Minutes".

Review: Benny Sings really is returning home with his new album "Benny At Home". The acoustic instrumentation that dominated "I Love You", Benny's previous release, takes a back seat to a much more urban sound. Still present though is the light hearted and seeming effortless way Benny Sings presents his compositions. The tracks are built on solid foundations of tight back-beats and bouncy grooves - the Dutchman, who started as a bass-player, seems to have remembered his hip-hop roots.

There was a time, sometime around the turn of the millennium, that Nottingham pair Simon Mills and Nail Tolliday - aka Bent - were hot property. They've long since returned to their solo projects, but here deliver a reminder of their ability to make enchanting, unusual and intoxicating downtempo music in the shape of From The Vaults 1998-2006, a collection of previously unreleased tracks. For those who followed their progress, there's plenty to enjoy, from the wonky electronic disco of "Job Finder", and blissfully Balearic, Mudd-ish "The Gallery", to the grandiose, string-laden "Blank" and piano-laden breeziness of "My Daughter The Asteroid".

Review: It's been 12 years since the release of bossa, downtempo and Latin jazz duo Bet E and Stef's debut album, Day By Day. Their reputation seems to have risen in recent years, and here Compost presents a deluxe two-disc retrospective of their short-lived career. It mixes slick, sensual originals - soft-focus songs, where Bet E's fragile, quietly soulful vocals ride similarly dewy-eyed, sun-soaked grooves - with rarities and a hand picked selection of reworks from last year's Remix Deluxe set. There's plenty to get excited about, from the sax-laden shuffle of previously unreleased "Corcovado" and breezy skank of Zeb's Ragga-Dub Rub of "Day By Day", to the Cuban beats of John Beltran's version of "It's All Right", and Buscemi's carnival D&B reinterpretation of "It's Over".

Review: After months locked in the studio Big Bang are finally here with their new album "Way In Jazz". This new project, sees the collaboration of artists such as Rasiyah (Bugz In The Attic/Marc De Clive Lowe), Xan Blacq, Roger Beaujolais, Jessica Lauren, Neil Angilley & Davide Giovannini (Snowboy/Vertente/Jazztronik), the excellent Nathan Haines on sax and flute, and an incredible horns section featuring Ingrid Laubrock. This album represents a new beginning for Big Bang, with his jazz and Brazilian roots really emerging in each track, especially in tracks like "Summer Fields" and "Batucada Mondiale" (with a great performance from the Samba King Barak Schmool)

Review: Maps is the twelfth studio album by NYC rapper Billy Woods, renowned for his abstract and poetic lyrics and put-ons from the likes of Elucid, Kenny Segal, Aesop Rock, and Danny Brown. It comes as a concept album about Woods' experiences as a touring musician, inspired by his crowded touring schedule after COVID-19 restrictions were lifted. The ensuing themes of connection, transformation, evolution, and homecoming are thoroughly explored through 13 tracks that hear Woods' vivid storytelling with diverse musical influences.

Review: After the excellent "Between The Lines" primer, Copenhagen collective Black Lillies drop their first full length album and it's a revelation. From the opening string strains of "Cannonball", you know this is going to be a real melting pot of sounds and ideas. The samba swing of "Cargo" boasts some intense percussion, while "A Rock In The Rain" is a slow, jazz torch song that defies description. Elsewhere, the woozy trip-hop of "In A Sweet Way" is a highlight as is the closing piano 'n' glitch of "Vinternat".

Review: A lot happened in the six years since George Mandas aka Blend released his debut 'Izired' for the Athenian label Dsofa Recordings.
As we look back we can surely acclaim his 2002 album release with New York's Shadow Records ('Echo Warrior'), his collaboration
with singer Natasha Atlas, the remix work for the DJ Spooky remix project 'Dubtometry' feat Mad Professor - Lee 'Scratch' Perry, his
appearance in LTJ Bukem's 'Soul Addiction' compilation, and definitely his current release for G.a.m.m. Enterprises under his
Palov & Mishkin moniker with partner DJ Palov.
Prepare yourself... 'Misplaced', released on Cast A Blast, features a cast of creative and talented people, including jazz-pianist/organist
Yiannis Dimitriadis; (Happy Dog Project, Omar Faruk Tekbilek) guitarist/producer Thanos Amorginos from 'The Earthbound' collective;
Dominican/New Yorker DJ/MC Jeff 'Rocklip' Gonzalez aka BnC, responsible for most of the vocals and scratches; vocalist Georgia

music partner Costas Chrysogelos aka Digital Alkemist playing the drums; plus special guests vocalist/guitarist Markos Koumaris from

Review: Parisian producer Blundetto has a growing reputation thanks to a string of fine singles that join the dots between cosy downtempo beatscapes, fresh neo-soul and crackly dub reggae. Yet for all his successes, he's yet to really break through. This third full-length - his first for two years - could change all that. Produced and performed with a laidback confidence, the 11 tracks variously touch on clavinet-heavy reggae (see the excellent cover of Alan Toussaint's soul staple "Hercules"), Afro-soul, hip-hop, R&B (the string-laden slow jam "It's All About"), and even breezy Latino sounds (the Meters-go-Cuban vibes of "I'll Be Home Later").

With a sound spanning reggae, Latin, African, Jazz and more established on the first two Blundetto albums, World Of... finds Guiget expanding this vision for perhaps his finest work to date. Vocals naturally play a big part in World Of... with some of France's foremost Reggae voices like Biga Ranx and PupaJim featuring amongst the 12 tracks, whilst Marina Peloso's contribution to "Last Broken Bones" marks it out as an album highlight. Look out for the cover of Bob Marley's "Work" too which features New York rapper Jahdan Blakamoore and Ubiquity's ubiquitous Shawn Lee.

Review: Hype Williams man Dean Blunt seems to delight in confounding expectations. Over the years, he's offered up solo and collaborative releases that steadfastly refuse to fit into any neat pattern. Here he's at it again, largely stepping away from experimental electronics towards a more fragile, heartfelt sound that prioritizes acoustic guitars, harps, mournful strings and emotionally raw lyrics over drum machines and hissing pops and crackles. It makes for an arresting, if surprising, set, one which retains interest thanks not only to the emotion-rich feel of its music, but Blunt's impeccable sequencing skills. Certainly, it squeezes more simple, unfussy beauty into 70 minutes than anything he's done previously.

Review: The traditonal way to start a review of any Micko Westmoreland release - and with as is to point out that he's best known for playing Jack Fairey in the mock glam documentary Velvet Goldmine, but with a second strong album in his new, flanked -by-legends incarnation and some highly memorable video promos featuring a succession of alternativ ecomedy greats, that could well be changing. Expect spiky English podst-punk songwriting a la XTC or even Pulp, with recent singles 'Autosexual' and 'What's In A Name' (which includes guest vocals from Kevin Eldon numbering among the highligths.

Review: It would be fair to say that self-styled cheeky monkey Benji Boko is better known for his incendiary "live remix" shows - a festival-rocking excuse to mash-up old and new records using samplers, sequencers and the like - than his own productions. This debut album may change all that. In true hip-hop style, it's an all-action patchwork of charity shop beats and samples, funtime skits, dancefloor-centric bangers (check out the reggae hip-hop smasher "No. 1 Sound" with veteran soundsystem toaster Ricky Rankin) and other kaleidoscopic audio treats. As you can imagine, Boko doesn't take himself too seriously, but there's enough quality here to prevent Beats, Treats & All Things Unique slipping into novelty territory.

Black Sands
Review: Black Sands, the eagerly anticipated fourth album from Simon Green AKA Bonobo, is no revolutionary change from his signature sound but does come with perhaps even more subtlety and complexity than his previous offerings. Having constantly instilled a degree of integrity and value back into chill out music following the influx of Cafe Del Mar and Coffeeshop compilations, Green once again displays a musicianship that sets him apart as a true artist and producer amongst a sea of downtempo and chillout DJs.
His undeniably clear understanding of composition and arrangement of live instruments has enabled Green to make an album that reaches out through diverse styles, taking influence and inspiration from wherever possible. On Black Sands, Green delves into electronic music and bass more than he did across Animal Magic, Dial "M" For Monkey or Days To Come but does so with enough subtlety and finesse to refrain from causing a radical shift in his product. Tracks like "Kiara," "We Could Forever" and "All In Forms" all utilise beats and bass in a more contemporary outlook than we are used to with Bonobo. Of course the instrumental feel is still there for all to see. Title track "Black Sands" takes this position for almost seven minutes of a horn infused waltz whereas "Kong" assumes the traditional soul-jazz Bonobo take and "Animals" lets delicate drum patterns guide us through pleasing tempo shifts.
The instrumental vibe is highlighted further in the album's approach to vocals. Unlike his last album, Days To Come which was littered with vocals, Black Sands houses only three tracks that contain vocals. The breathy vocals of Andreya Triana complete tracks like "Stay the Same" and "The Keeper" turning them in more traditional songs. Black Sands is another loving crafted offering that uses orchestral arrangements but this time merged with more of a dance aesthetic. As he continues to make chillout more credible in his experimental way, it's no wonder that Bonobo is one of the biggest artists to come from the excellent Ninja Tune.

Review: Simon Greene aka. Bonobo is set to put forth yet another album from his own personal ether; 'Fragments' was born from actual sonic 'fragments' that were later repurposed into twelve full 'sonic affirmations'. A later escape into the wilds of California's deserts formed the bulk of this album's downtempo magnum opi; watch out for collabs with a foray of world-downtempo electronica acts including Jamila Woods, O'Flynn and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson. One of his most heartfelt albums, expect all from lilting future garage ('Rosewood') to rave-nostalgic slow builds.
