Review: Shinichiro Yokota's legendary discography finally arrives on vinyl with The Pitstop Box, featuring 24 essential and exclusive tracks. Originally available only in Japan via Far East Recording, this long-awaited collection highlights Yokota's signature blend of funk, hip-hop, electronic and Japanese influences. It features house classics like 'Right Here Right Now' and 'Night Drive', plus a cover of Haruomi Hosono's 'Simoon' and a collaboration with Soichi Terada that is packed with signature melodic sugariness. Inspired by his love for sports cars, The Pitstop Box is a brilliant overview of one of house music's finest talents..

Review: While Japanese house music owes a lot to the dusty drums and emotion of early Chicago beats, it has always had its own signature sound on top. The chords and pianos bring a happiness that cannot fail to get you smiling and that is laid bare again here and this superbly uplifting collection of nice analogue jams by Shinichiro Yokota on J-house legend Soichi Terada's Far Eat Recordings. There are bouncy vocal cuts like 'Timelaps', tight cosmic kickers and soul drenched vibes like 'Tokyo Traffic Paradise'. It's an impossibly pleasing collection with great use of sax in places, which is no mean feat.

Review: Yomm's upcoming EP showcases a unique blend of City-Pop with diverse influences, solidifying her as a standout figure in the contemporary music scene. This six-track collection includes the pre-release singles 'Hatsukoi,' 'Alice,' 'Miraco feat. Layone,' and 'Saratto Patto Pitto,' alongside two new tracks: 'Hon de Yomitake,' penned and arranged by Kiseru's Gobun Tsujimura, and 'Scramble - Tokyo,' written and composed by yomm herself. A new project by Korean singer-songwriter and model Choi Jung-yoon, Yomm has quickly gained attention since its launch in April, with contributions from notable artists like Shota Araya (formerly of yonawo), Motoi Kawabe (Mitsume) and Jin Ono. The EP showcases yomm's ability to blend City-Pop with modern elements, creating a sound that feels both nostalgic and innovative. With its eclectic mix of styles and top-tier collaborations, this EP is set to be a refreshing addition to the evolving City-Pop genre.

Review: When he originally released his second solo album, Tomorrow's Modern Boxes, in 2014, Thom Yorke only made it available as a download via BitTorrent. The paid-for package proved popular, with over a million listeners scrambling to download it in the first week of release. Here it finally gets a physical release (a limited Japanese pressing in 2015 not withstanding). The album is naturally typical of much of Yorke's solo work, blending his fragile and dinstinctive vocals with heart-aching piano motifs, crunchy electronics beats and all manner of weird and wonderful sonic textures. Early reviews stated that it was Yorke's most challenging work to date, but one that just gets better with every listen. That remains a perfect summary of an alluring and deliciously odd collection of tracks.

Review: Since he first landed on our radar via Vivid a few years back, Yosh has dished out enough high grade garage and breakbeat gear to fuel the scene on his own. Not only a prolific producer, he's also got a razor sharp flair which edges him in front of a crowded scene, and now he's back to Vivid to show us exactly what he's about with a 12-track double-pack, his biggest release to date. In one sense you should know exactly what to expect - elevated steppers and deft rollers, but the fundamental appeal of Yosh is all those ear-snagging traits which make his tracks sparkle, and you never know what they're going to be until the needle's tracking in that groove. Now you can enjoy that sensation 12 times over - a good deal if ever we saw one.

Review: It's not easy trying to pin down Yoshi, the Italian producer. Info is thin on the ground but we do know that parts of A Sunny Place for Shady People are clearly inspired, at least in part, by the legendary Ryuichi Sakamoto and other Japanese digital pop moguls, A Sunny Place is as exploratory and avant garde as it is universal, and steeped in a kind of authenticity that means it could quite possibly have been made at any point since the mid-1980s. A noteworthy achievement and a fantastic, instantly replay-able album.

Review: Hiroshi Yoshimura is having a moment. Originally released in the 1980s, this collection of environmental music from the Japanese musician and composer offers a tranquil listening experience, Yoshimura painting sonic landscapes that evoke the subtle beauty of the natural world. 'Over The Clover' unfolds with the gentle sway of leaves, while 'Flora' captures the delicate essence of blossoming flowers. Each track is a miniature portrait of nature's intricacies, from the unfurling of morning glories in 'Asagao' to the whispering breeze of 'Wind Echo'. 'Maple Syrup Factory' adds a touch of unexpected sweetness, a subtle shift in the otherwise serene palette. But this is more than just pretty soundscapes. Yoshimura's music invites active listening, revealing intricate details that might be missed on a casual listen. It's music that rewards close attention while simultaneously blending into the background of everyday life.

Review: Much to nerdy Japanese electronic lovers' delight, Temporal Drift reissued Hiroshi Yoshimura's Surround last year, and now carry on focussing on his work with the first-ever reissue of Flora, an overlooked gem in ambient music. Recorded in 1987 but unreleased until 2006, which was three years after Yoshimura's sad passing, Flora carries on in style where his acclaimed works Green and Surround left off. It's another sublime record that highlights Yoshimura's ability to explore the interplay between sound and ambience. He was a diverse talent who also created an album for museum playback, and composed a soundtrack for a contemporary fashion show.

Review: Slime Season 3 is the third mixtape by American rapper Young Thug and it was initially released on March 25 back in 2016. Continuing the Slime Season series, the mixtape features Thug's signature blend of eccentric delivery and melodic flows which now stand alone within the trap genre. Highlights include standout tracks like 'With That' and 'For Ya'll' where Thug combines inventive wordplay with hard-hitting beats. While it wasn't initially available in the UK on vinyl, Slime Season 3 solidified Thug's influence in the hip-hop world and got praise for its and boundary-pushing approach to trap.

Review: The original entry in the Slime Season series from Yung Thug is a mixtape filled with highs and lows. While the rapper showcases his eccentric style and talent, the compilation feels like a patchwork of unfinished ideas. Some tracks are fast-paced while others, like 'Hey I' and 'Best Friend' shine as highlights. Thug's strongest songs display subtle, carefully structured melodies, and many have high replay value, especially the opening tracks. Despite this, the mixtape features standout moments, such as 'Draw Down' and 'Wood Would' which demonstrate his lyrical unpredictability and emotional depth and remind why Thug is so revered in trap.

Drift Study 14 VII 73 9:27:27-10:06:41 PM NYC
Review: American minimalism pioneers La Monte Young and Marian Zeeler released their second album in 1974, when they were already well-established in the US avant-garde. This serves as a document of their work and ideas at the time, with two very different sides on offer. The first side was recorded at a private concert, in which Young and Zeeler's voices interact with sustained drones and some occasional trumpet from Jon Hassell and trombone from Garrett List. The second side focuses on a bowed gong study, ruminating on the particulars of frequency and harmonics and their potential effects on the listener and the space in which they're heard.

Made between 1964 and 1969, the album has gone down in history as a captivating fusion of dreamy electronic sounds and Eastern-influenced vocalization, with techniques such as microtonal tuning and extended repetition laying its experimental groundwork.

His self-titled debut marked the beginning of a prolific career and quickly established him as an underground force with mainstream appeal. Over the years, Droog has gained widespread recognition and earned co-signs from hip-hop legends. With his latest project Movie, he embraces a new chapter by collaborating with Method Man, Denzel Curry, and producers like Just Blaze and Madlib to showcase the full range of his artistry and personal journey.

Review: Brooklyn heavyweight Your Old Droog is one of the most prolific rappers in the game right now, and following up quickly on his Time LP (which featured the likes of Doom and Edan) comes this sure shot. As ever the beats sport a maverick touch where major label rock gets squashed into a funk and the drums slip and slide around seriously loose grooves. The ideas just spill out of this guy, and he's brought some co-conspirators along for the ride. Look out for Lil Ugly Mane and Billy Woods on 'Meteor Man' and Nickelus F on 'Mojito', all weighing in on another gold standard drop from a supreme mic man and producer extraordinaire.

Review: Here comes Brooklyn's finest, Your Old Droog, with a double feature of EPs previously confined to Bandcamp. Natures Sounds have gathered together 2022's The Yodfather and The Shining and pressed them up on a platter and there's no doubt both releases are more than worthy of the extra shine. While you might expect such cinema-referencing projects to be loaded with bait samples, Droog works in more subtle ways, laying down his killer flows over those blunted, off-kilter beats that mark him out as one of the strongest voices in US hip-hop right now.

Review: Youthie and Macca Dread redefine excellence with their latest album Gecko Tones on Youthie Records which builds on previous albums The Roots Explorers and Nomad Skank. This consistency isn't stagnation but a subtle evolution that remains high-caliber. Juliette Bourdeix aka Youthie is classically trained on trumpet and infuses each note with soul while also skilfully integrating flute and accordion. The album's diverse instrumentation, which draws from global influences takes you on a world trip with strong Eastern Europe sounds. Macca Dread's analogue productions deliver dynamic, crisp sounds that defy criticism and make this a wonderful reggae outing.

Review: Club culture can be curiously misled at times. While the focus is so often on breakdowns, in reality it's the hypnosis of looped drums and hi hats that often captures our imagination. And while belters frequently steal the limelight, in doing so we're at risk of forgetting the unifying, open-armed foundations that are found in everything from techno to hardcore to jungle and beyond. Brutal Flowers certainly makes a strong case for rethinking priorities. "A no-airs and graces piece of cool future-proof ambience" the label puts it. We'd agree. YS's stunning record seems to speak to our inner dreams of what rave has been and could still be, it hits nail-on-head in turning the emotions of surreal walks home post-club with friends into beautiful, understated yet grand synth overtures. It never forgets that heads down and ethereality are not opposites, but instead two halves of the same passion, and thoughtfulness is really the only secret ingredient in the dance music spectrum.

Review: Swedish-Japanese vocalist Yukimi Nagano (best known as the lead singer of the post-punk and electronica group Little Dragon) shares her debut album on Ninja Tune, embodying the best of her charms as a solo artist whose space away from the band allows her ample time to reflect on her own emotions. Born of the first production 'Sad Makeup' - a song about the inevitably, always-botched attempt to suppress and sweep sad feelings under the rug, and the ways this backfires when around close friends - the entire album in fact threads a narrative yarn centring on the overcoming of "darkest nights", externalised in the repeated mention in the lyrics of Sweden's long, dark and shivery winters. Taking cues from everyone to filmmaker Ingmar Bergman to collaborator Lianne La Havas, Nagano wears her vulnerability on her sleeve.

Review: Yuna's self-titled debut album came with three tracks produced by none other than Pharrell Williams. That was a decade ago when she was just 24 years old and one of the hottest properties in the scene. Freshly signed to Fader for the album, it was a great showcase of the young singer's voice across a mix of sounds that took in r&b, soul and pop with a mature edge and moving emotional narrative. It was initially only put out on CD but a decade on that is corrected as Fader drop this vinyl version just in time for Christmas.

Review: Yung Bae hails from Los Angeles, California and has always brought plenty of that state's sunshine and good time vibes into his effortlessly feel-good music. B4E is an album he dropped back in 2018 following Skyscraper Anonymous, BAE 2, BA3 and Bae: Side B, all in 2016. He has always mixed up future funk, vapourware adjacent sounds, boogie, disco and soul, most often self-releasing his tunes via online platforms. This album now makes its way to vinyl and we couldn't be happier - it is delightfully bright and colourful with irresistible vocals and hooks across ten life-affirming tunes.

Review: Yung Bae is the alias of Dallas Cotton, a Los Angeles-based producer with influences that include disco, r&b and Japanese City Pop. He had already proven his capabilities over the past two years, but his album Bae 3 really shows off his mastery in making A-grade funk. There's the boogie-down vibe of 'Back To The Classics', the neon-lit night moves of 'If You Want It', as well as the low slung mood music of 'All Night' and the upbeat horns-driven dancefloor heater 'Fantasy' being just of the highlights.

Review: Earlier in the year, Yves Tumor announced the release of this album by releasing 'Gospel For a New Country', a low-slung chunk of post-punk pop brilliance that mixed weighty grooves and emotive vocals with flash-fried guitar riffs amd sampled big band horns. Fittingly, it's this fine track that kicks off 'Heaven To A Tortured Mind', a notably fuzzy, live-sounding set that continues his evolution from quirky electronica maker to alt-rock artist. While there are some electronic sounds dotted across the set, for the most part it's funk-rock riffs, ESG style basslines, organic drums and his own heartfelt vocals that dominate. It could win him many new fans; certainly, it's a very good album.
