Body Mind Spirit EP
Cat: JMEP 023. Rel: 06 May 21
Meditation #1-2 (1:36)
Body Mind Spirit (feat Dumama) (7:05)
Saturn Return (6:37)
Elevation #1-2 (2:51)
Phoenix Rising (5:07)
Nuit Des To'eres (8:18)
Review: Multi-instrumentalist Abase and drummer/producer Ziggy Zeitgeist come together for this fantastic collaboration, which explores deep grooves tinged with everything from jazz to psyche, funk to afro. The voice of the South African singer Dumama lends epic cut 'Body Mind Spirit' a rare spirituality while on 'Elevation #1-2', it is more a deeply inward mood that melts your heart. There is a brilliant looseness to 'Phoenix Rising' as its drums and bass percolate like coffee, while 'Nuit Des To'eres' closes with a broken rhythm that keeps you every much on your toes.

Global Essence Sampler (12" limited to 300 copies)
Cat: DISRWAX 007. Rel: 25 Oct 23
Allstarr Motomusic - "Precious Path" (6:17)
Barce - "Clean That Shit" (6:29)
Zarenzeit - "Zahara" (4:05)
Jank - "What Becomes Of" (6:48)
Jan Kincl - "3300 Gratiot Ave" (feat Ishfaq & Wolford Heifer) (8:04)
Review: Global Essence Sampler is a new series from Deep Inspiration Show Records that calls upon a fine roster of international producer talent to serve up one track each and reflect on what deep house is today. For Allstarr Motomusic the answer is smooth and cruising house grooves with elastic basslines and distant vocal wails. Barce explores classic Larry Heard-style cosmic melodic territory with plenty of star-gazing potential, and Zarenzeit's 'Zahara' is another one that floats amongst the stars with lush ambient pads. Jank offers a more dusty, rhythmic house sound for cosy backroom parties, and then come the jazzy melodies and soulful bass noodling of Jan Kincl's '3300 Gratiot Ave.' Magic stuff.

Barce - "Jazztroit" (feat Roger Versey - Melchior Sultana remix) (5:52)
Dan Piu - "Whispers Of Goodbye" (6:15)
Zarenzeit - "We Are All The Same " (4:17)
Review: Deep Inspiration Show Records is back with a second part of its Global Essence Sampler and it is another 12" that offers great nourishment for mind, body and soul. Barce from Spain featuring Roger Versey opens up with some slow but heavy house grovers awash with rugged synth loops. Dan Piu's 'Ocean' is an aquatic and dubby roller for bliss doit vibes, and Zarenzeit taps into dreamy old school Italo house on 'Heard Echoes.' The same three artists appear in the same order on the flip with three other originals which tap into deeper Detroit schools of house, Balearic and electro stylings.

Biesmans - "All Day, Every Day" (4:19)
Review: Biesmans' contribution to Watergate's mix series is made up entirely of his own previously unreleased productions, most of which were made in cahoots with friends and other like-minded artists. Because of this, the German label has decided to release two extensive vinyl samplers featuring the cream of these cuts. The Belgian indie-dance stalwart is in fine form throughout the first of these, with our picks of a very strong bunch including the new wave-tinged, cosmic-minded Shubostar hook-up 'Across The Universe', Zombies In Miami-sporting nu-disco throb-job 'Smooth Monday', breakbeat-driven neo-rave anthem 'All Day Every Day' and the EP-closing 'Away', where doP member Vandesande helps Biesmans channel the spirit of Vangelis' much-loved Bladerunner soundtrack.

Juju (original)
Juju (Halo & Atjazz Deeply Minded mix)
Juju (Halo & Atjazz Deeply Minded dub)
Review: Sumptuous deep house sounds from South Africa courtesy of Black Coffee. Lead track "Juju" takes its name from the French word joujou, and refers to the supernatural power ascribed to an object or being, and on this occasion it seems the producer is referring to the hypnotic power of a woman. Richly textured instrumentation jingles below Zakes Bantwini's vocals for a truly moving deep house moment on the original version, while Halo & Atjazz team up for two remixes, with the oven warm chords and late night groove of the dub version taking the spoils.

Mayday/Captured Restless Soul Mixes (GU mix Meshup) (7:22)
Review: Those two little letters GU are always enough to get us excited. They are of course an alias of Glenn Underground, the masterful Chicago house producer, musician and DJ who still has a much lower profile than his talents deserve. Here he adds a Mix Mashup to Bobpstar's 'Mayday/Captured Restless Soul Mixes' and the result is a bubbly, mellifluous deep house cut with warm and liquid synths, chopped-up vocal fragments and a gooey sense of romance. It is another crucial offering from the Windy City mainstay, even if it is a one-sided 12".

Brawther - "Sundials" (feat Nathan Haines - B’s dub) (5:50)
Bengoa - "Neftina Dub" (5:09)
Lex & Locke - "Atenas Blues" (6:59)
Zaq - "Make A Wish" (7:50)
Review: No prizes for guessing the motivation behind this new EP, 5 Years Of B2 Recordings. It is a tidy and tasteful celebration of half a decade of top quality deep house from a range of key players. This one opens with Frenchman Brawther getting dubbed out and deep as ever with some nice lounge chords and blissed-out pads. Bengoa's 'Neftina Dub' has a subtle US garage shuffle to it that harks back to the 90s and Lex & Locke then bring rich paint chords and withering synth motifs to 'Atenas Blues' before Zaq's 'Make A Wish' shuts down with some cosmic rays of positivity. A fantastic EP so here's to the next five years.

Mike Clark - "Nu Day"
Zhao-Ski - "Ova The Limit"
Terrence Parker - "Lonely World"
Brian Harden - "String Vibe"
Sean Deason - "Beautiful 1"
Review: D3 Recordings offshoot D3 Elements is only three releases deep, but already their releases are reaching "must check" status. Following their recent release of a superb EP from US deep house veteran Brian Harden, the Paris-based imprint offers up something a little different - an EP of gorgeously deep and melodic flavours that joins the dots between head-nodding instrumental hip-hop and floor-friendly 4/4 fare. There are plenty of surprises, too, including techno stalwart Terrence Parker delivering a flute-heavy downtempo head-nodder, some gorgeous beatdown from Detroiter Mike Clark, and a thrillingly string-laden chunk of deep house bliss from the aforementioned Harden. Recommended.

Turntables On Ipanema

DJ G - "Samba Da Terra" (6:13)
Simbad - "Detroit De Janeiro" (3:28)
Nickodemus & Simbad - "BerlimBOOM" (4:57)
Zeb - "Space Forest" (4:26)
Review: Brooklyn's Wonderwheel is kind of like an institution by now; a label which has been delivering high levels of quality since the early 00s, and who is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. In fact, the imprint has only managed to develop and nurture their tribalistic style of the years, and it's fair to say that they have successfully managed to create a Wonderwheel 'sound'; heavy, club-friendly deep house with subtle Afro nuances. This new EP, Turntables On Ipanema, is a collaborative effort by a series of familiar names: DJ G's wonderfully tropical house ballad "Samba De Terra" leads the 12", and is followed by Simbad's darker, more broken house groove called "Detroit De Janeiro", a perfect blurring of the sounds of the two American cities. Over on the B-side, "BerimBOOM" by Nickodemus and Simbad is a warm, beat-heavy deep house tune, and Zeb's "Space Forest" winds the tempo down to a sweet, mid-paced groove with magnificently dubby harmonies, and a balearic kinda feel.

Review: Satya deals in a certain brand of deep house that is dreamy and organic. It's perfect for the cosier dancefloors out there, the more heady crowds who don't need big drops and samples to get their musical thrills. If you are one of those people then get your ears around this superb new various artists 12". YokoO & Zone+ offer one of the standouts with 'Once I Had It"]' which pairs subtly swirling pads with cuddly deep drum loops. Hermanez has his kickstand with a little more weight but they are no less hypnotic, while Moya (US) brings some enchanting strings and yawning vocals to 'Meliora' and Electricano keeps it nice and warm and liquid with the supple loops of 'Universal Language.'

Teenage Music - "Runnin From Your Love" (main final) (6:06)
Review: Brooklyn imprint Atypical Dopeness has previously given us homegrown talents Vick Lavender, Dawn Tillmann and Joe Claussell recently and now serve up some fresh talent on their label roster and it's sounding pretty hot. On the A side Eqwel & Ze's "Static Perc" is some pretty sinister dark house with some exotic steel drums supported by some violent tribal chants and minimal electronics; you've got to hear this one! "Runnin' From Your Love (Reprise)" by Teenage Music is even darker with its snarling sub bass and gloomy DX7 pads over a restrained groove; loved this one too. The main version on the flip has vocals and is more restrained. On the flip "Chellywood" by Russian Anton Neotnas (WAXXX) gets more uplifting than the other side but still mysterious enough with its soulful pads and deep groove making this one seriously emotive tune. Tip!

Review: The third and final EP from the ten year anniversary series by French label D3 Elements is another one that offers a wide range of excellent grooves. To kick off, Jason Hogans takes us into woozy late night territory with muffled leads and lazy breaks, then Zopelar heads for the cosmos on his radiant synth laced house offering 'Resolution.' Malik Hendricks keeps it low key and slow with his intimate basement sounds on 'Green Mango' then Meftah rebuilds on a dusty Theo Parrish tip with 'Maha Shatki.' Damar Davis offers pure cosmic deep house lushness on closer 'Kiss In The Dark.'

John Cravache - "Le Desir De Rester Petit" (Cubo remix) (4:53)
Zombie Zombie - "The Beach" (4:30)
Review: France's Versatile Records is a truly impressive label. They've been going string for over twenty years, and everything on its wonderful catalogue is worth a listen, whether you're a house fanatic or a jazz-funk head. They've been busy releasing vinyl EP's of this year's comprehensive 1996-2016 compilation, and this latest nugget forms part of the most recent years, where they've teamed up particularly closely with the likes of Sex Tags' DJ Sotofett. The opener is I:Cube's masterfully punchy and supremely executed "VVV" house bomb, followed by Sotofett's and label boss Gilb'r's "Foliages" - remixed here by Sotofett into a loose and jazzy version. I:Cube remixes John Cravache's "Le Desir De Rester Petit" on the flip under the Cubo name, the producer conjuring a dark and hypnotic tune, and Zombie Zombie make an appearance with their fuzzy electro house monster take of "Blue Monday" by New Order, entitled "The Beach". Solid.

Zoo Look - "I Can't Deny"
Review: As a steady bastion of UK centric deep house, Tsuba leave no-one guessing with the intention of their Night Trax series. This time around it's a meeting of old and new with Scottish scene stalwart Milton Jackson alongside fresh young South Coast upstarts Zoo Look. "Requisite Vocal Science" sees Jackson delivering his classic kind of ethereal deep house with rock solid beats and the titular samples on a Joy Orbison angle of mutation. Zoo Look are more kinked in their groove, maximizing on swing and shuffle to create a heated party rocker that keeps passions tempered even as it drops into a nagging funk, like all good deep house should.

Review: Steadily building up a prominent identity in the bustling minimal house and techno thoroughfare, The Untold Stories return with one of their signature various artist compilations to present some lesser known practitioners of the hypnotic groove. Jerome C gets a rugged angle on the swing to his beats on "An Intelligible Scrawl", while Volta Cab nods to a classic Tobias jam with "Street Knowledge". MD Wallholz's "Ein Bisschen Ruhe" is a shivering slice of experimental electro, and Jonas Sella brings an unhinged French flavour to proceedings, but truthfully every jam on this solidly packed release has its own distinct character that fits into the meandering tale the label is unfurling.

Review: Taken from Gilles' forthcoming 'In the House' compilation, Defected bring you the third in a series of three 12"s containing exclusive house productions
commissioned by Gilles Peterson himself. Whereas the word 'exclusive' is used by almost every label on any old release these days, this is one of the few
times where it definitely is required. Every track on these 3 pieces of vinyl have never before been released and are produced specifically for this product.
Carl Craig, Karizma, DJ Sneak, Peter Kruder, Sandy Rivera, Zed Bias - the list just goes on and on. Any serious House DJ who doesn't get their hands on

Review: The Beeyou crew are buzzing around once again, this time with The Digger EP which sees the return of a few label mainstays as well as some new bees entering the hive. Laidlaw & Le Louche kick off the A1 combining for AH HA. Although the name may sound funny, the beat is anything but that with serious grooves and a wicked bassline. The dutch powerhouse that is Julian Anthony returns to the label with the driving thumper Zero Gravity, which also comes with a "dance floor destroyer" warning attached. On the B side Zach Murray & Jake Kav take us deep & bubbly with Force Of Nature before rising talent Harry Felce rounds things off with Tantrum, a solid rave inspired flavour that combines the best of the 90s with a new UK sound.

This awesome 12" comes packed with a Rene Amesz remix, an artist that seems to have the Midas touch at the moment. Very slick production that gets the vocal sound just right. Nail - "Glazed"
Harry McCanna - "Act 1"

Review: The revival in fortunes of former Bent producer Nail began in earnest this year with the Ode Rammel EP of classic cuts that Fear Of Flying released back in February, and following further full EPs for Airdrop, Shabby Doll and Robsoul the man born as Niall Tolliday returns to FOF as part of their latest vinyl only excursion. The chunky, roughed up "Glazed" originates from the same time period as Nail's Fear Of Flying debut but is unreleased, having been found gathering dust on a DAT tape - more of this please Nail. Complementing this, Undersound resident Harry McCanna showcases his production prowess with "Act 1" which is dominated by a subtle yet powerful bassline, whilst the flip sees Romanian producer Zece mix delay laden vox with gritty breakbeat rhythms on the stripped down "Nephew". Sonodab's self titled closer dips into the deepest realms of melodic electro - this one has set opener written all over it.

Review: The second volume of Nuances De Nuit brings together another choice cast of producers operating in the contemporary deep house scene. Politics Of Dancing are always to be trusted to kick a record off in style, and they do so with aplomb here on the heady melodic rush of "When The Morning Comes" before Akyra takes things in a crafty, playful and heftily swinging direction on "Rizla". Karaba's "Floating Mind" hovers in a psychedelic space shaped out by expressive synth shapes and anchored by a rubbery bassline and stout house beat. Cosmic JD and Zenta complete the record with "Spencer Landoff", another cheeky diversion into the alternate dimension of the late night / early morning scene.

Review: Earlier this year the Kolour Ltd label issued the (rather indecisively titled) It's House Not House EP which featured DJ Sprinkles, Rick Wade and Bicep; understandably it was quite well received by the house (not house) vinyl buying public and sensing they are onto a winning formula Kolour now issue a second volume. It's an equally international affair too with the UK represented by the ubiquitous Waze & Oddysey and the like minded Zoo Look whilst Leipzig and South African are represented in the shape of M.ono & Luvless and Terrence Pearce respectively. W&O demonstrate a slightly more contemplative mood melodically speaking amidst the swooping vocal hooks and club ready beats on "Playin Musique" whilst "Auckland Joggers" showcases the inherent musicality of M.ono & Luvless. On the flip Zoo Look come through with a deeply layered slab of contemporary UK house whilst "The Fantastic" from Mr Pearce lives up to it's name and then some.

Review: Z Lovecraft AKA Rhythm Section International's Mali Baden-Powell, offers up four originals on the Utopia Club Tracks label that showcase the disco/house end of his varied output. 'Exotic Passage' coasts along serenely with gently slapped bongos and warm electric piano, definitely a weapon to have in one's warm up arsenal. 'Release (The Tension)' ups the heat a little with a busier bassline, filters and disco licks, before B-side opener 'Lust In Denial' comes with more jazz-slanted piano riffs and 'People Get Too Deep' closes proceedings with the most spacious and dubby arrangement of the quartet. Musically refreshing and understated but lively enough to move feet onto dancefloors, this is the business.

Review: Za Talent is a fresh alias from regular collaborators Jonny Nash and Suzanne Kraft. While their previous outings were unashamedly ambient and horizontal in nature, this 12" for Animals Dancing is deliciously dancefloor-focused - even if there trademark rich chords and glassy-eyed electronics do feature prominently. On the A you'll find "Telex", a quirky chunk of laidback electro smothered in fax machine electronics, bubbly melodies and punchy drum machine hits. Flip for "The Whale", where intergalactic police sirens weave in and out of spacey electro motifs, gently pulsing electronics and a rhythm track that can't decide whether it's broken, jazzy or just plain weird. It is, though, really rather good.

Review: Taymor Zadeh has only made one previous appearance alongside Mike Gill on Roots For Bloom, but now the mysterious producer steps out of the shadows to drop this crucial slice of minimal house with a unique twist. "Cacofonix" can't fail to get under your skin thanks to the unusual poetry being recited over the top of it. The lyrics and delivery gel smoothly into the rest of the track, but they're not the kind of style you would normally find in such a punchy club track. "One Soul" meanwhile reduces down some funky licks to make for a focused, hard grooving jam, and then Matt Tolfrey steps up on the flip to make a meatier concoction out of "Cacofonix".

Review: Jazz-funk twosome Zamie (Jadie Kiggundu AKA Ziggy Funk and pal Jamie McShane) impressed with their recent album, Fortuitous. On this EP, two of the set's most potent cuts have been given the remix treatment with club dancefloors in mind. Incognito main man Bluey handles side A, offering up a smooth, groovy and musically detailed take on 'Smash N Grab' that peppers a slap-bass-propelled groove with spacey synth pads, jammed out Rhodes stabs and all manner of life-affirming electric piano solos. Over on side B, Glaswegian veteran Al Kent takes 'Wildfire' down the disco, turning in a near 11-minute, Tom Moulton style rub rich in punchy synth-horns, snaking sax solos and spacey synth solos aplenty. Colourful, grown-up disco with a jazz-funk flex... more please!

Review: Futureboogie Recordings' musical transformation over recent years has been remarkable, with boss man Dave Harvey ditching the shiny, synth-powered house jams and nu-disco mutations of old for a range of releases that plough a more cosmic, psychedelic and chugging furrow. This EP from sometime Nein and Roam Recordings' producer Zakmina is a terrific example of the Bristol imprint's new trademark sound. It sees him confidently bounce between the Giallo-influenced, acid-soaked, synthesizer-driven throb of 'Church of Madness', the raw and hallucinatory, mid-tempo deep acid hedonism of 'Deja-Vu' and the frankly foreboding peak-time intensity of 'Running Amore', whose echo-laden timbales hits rise above a raw and druggy bassline. The EP's obligatory remix comes courtesy of Hungarian maestro Gnork, who re-imagines 'Church of Madness' as a punchy slab of glassy-eyed electro bliss.

Don't You Worry

Spinning On The Spot
Review: It looks like Paul Mac really has fired up the old Jorge Zamacona alias again since several of his DJ tools appeared in the early noughties on Ben Sims Ingoma imprint and more recently appearing on Zurich's Tardis and of course Steve O'Sullivan's Mosaic: who present us with this awesome EP. "Don't You Worry" is loopy and discofied power-house much in the same vein as Ben Sims' Ron Bacardi alias: this stuff will jack you in relentless fashion! "You've Forgotten" however is more reminiscent of the stuff on his Tardis release: stripped and dubby house that's hypnotic as much as it is funky. Finally on the flip is the tough techno DJ tool "Spinning On The Spot" which is powered by some furious and bass heavy toms for the most part as well as those haunting dub chords.

Review: Sheffield's Al Zanders aka Lodger is back with Dsomc and this 12" release inaugurates his new eponymous imprint.. so good on him! On the A side is his rework of local seven piece band Hot Diamond Aces' "DSOMC" which is an epic serving of jazzy, funky Afro house that'll really get into your head (and to your feet!) On the flip, we've got Zanders with "Raiz" featuring Sleepsang; a sublime deep house cut covered in just the right sheen of dust and immersed in the enough smoke to lose yourself in at a basement party this Summer.

Drunk At The Jazz
One Question
Flyin' High
Mustn't Evolve (feat Dugeon Posse)
Review: After first serving notice of their potential with a 2013 CDr of lopsided house indebted to the saucier strains of funk and disco, Zanzibar Chanel duo Baba-X and Imhotep Agbodzi made quite a stir with Funky Junk, their 12" debut on Ruff Records earlier this year. Arising on the Home Loan Records label that proved to be a winning platform for Andras Fox should see Zanzibar Chanel's star rise further more, with their humour very much still in evidence on Drunk At The Jazz Club. There's a classicist disco strut to the title cut that will act as an immediate hook for many inquisitive ears, whilst there's something positively Mood Hut about "One Question". Face down "Flying High" is weird mutant funk that you might hear shifting around a Maurice Fulton set, whilst "Mustn't Evolve" slows the tempo right down and sends the strangeness in the opposite direction..

Her Lesson
Review: It's been a fine first year of business for the Sol Asylum label who have secured a stellar selection of cuts from the likes of Dana Ruh, Dilated Pupils, Julie Marghilano and more with this output complemented by some truly distinct illustrated cover art. What better way to sign off 2014 than turn to one of Russia's most respected producers in Ethereal Sound boss man Anton Zap. It's not clear what Sleduyushly stands for, or indeed what exactly is happening on the cover art, but don't be distracted by translation woes and focus on Zap's refined skills for deep and ever evolving productions that is evident from the moment "Talking" locks into groove. From here Zap rolls through terrain that's abstract ("Rubblewood"), chunky ("My Lesson") and ambient ("Her Lesson") for one of the more diverse and accomplished 12"s you'll hear this week.

Water
Road Trip Song
Review: Russian producer Anton Zap is renowned for the deepness of his house and techno productions, but rarely has he gone as subterranean as the two tracks on the latest Ethereal Sounds release. "Water" is stunning in the deepness of its grooves and gently undulating chords. It brilliantly fuses sparse, shuffling techno rhythms with the sort of drifting, heart-aching melodies that could leave Larry Heard weeping tears of joy. As a piece of electronic music it's sublime. Flipside "Road Trip Song" is more obviously dancefloor friendly, but no less deep. Zap peppers a low-end heavy dub techno workout with cosmic effects, subtle chords and intermittent spurts of chasm-deep piano.

You Are Not Alone (Adide)
Review: A week after Juno Plus revealed Berlin based label Millions Of Moments was launching a UK dubstep/funky/garage influenced sub label, we're given a timely reminder about what made the MOM name in the first place: straight up, emotive deep house and techno. And who better to repress than Russian producer Anton Zap, whose You Are Not Alone EP - first released in late 2009 - constitutes one of the label's finest moments. Sit back and allow the pool cue percussion and sparse, mechanical chords to envelope your headphones in "Classic Dub", a master class in the 'less is more' school of production. This shares the A Side with the sombre shuffle of "Kingdom", before the skeletal drums of "Party Down Dub" opens proceedings on the flip. Final track "Adide" is imbued with the most groove of all, with expertly arranged bass and bongos reminding us once again why Zap is one of the most respected names in contemporary deep house.

Review: French label Terpsition present their first compilation, a mixed bag of sounds from Anton Zap, Chordula, Kai Von Glasgow and Hampel & Niki. The A-Side first falls to Ethereal Sounds guru Zap and his intense but slow burning deep house cut. Next up is newcomer Chordula with "Capture", made quite obviously to smash every dancefloor that has the pleasure of its presence - check out that hearty bass! Turning over, Kai Von Glasgow's "How to Love" is romantic, heartbreaking and bizarrely dance worthy at the same time. Last but not least Terpsition present another new artist duo, Hampel & Niki, who serve up old school disco beats with a modern edge and underlying house drive. The two sides of this EP cover a gloriously wide range of soundscapes, moods and arrangements.

Lay-Far - "A Piece Of Devotion"
Review: You'd expect a collection of tracks from the likes of Rick Wade and Anton Zap on esteemed deep house imprint Shanti to be pretty nifty, and - predictably - it is. With five soft focus excursions to choose from, there's plenty to get excited about - not least Wade's contribution. "Sexy Rostov" is as smooth and silky as we've come to expect, with enough bottom end groove to please all but the most bass-obsessed rave urchins. Zap's "We Are Satisfied" is equally simmering, but the real revelation is "Marwencol" by the St Petersburg Disco Spin Club - an unfeasibly beautiful slice of slow house brilliance that boasts some particularly intricate piano arrangements.

Review: Is deep house music dead? On HM008 - Retrospect, Hardmatter co-founder and label honcho Zapata flips that notion on its head, and proves that it's anything but. The Berlin-based, New York-born producer debuts on his own label with six thoughtful slabs of deep, padded, and jazzy house, informed not only by the legacy of his native city but also by the trying times that all house lovers face. The EP begins with the spaced-out, beatless ambient yarn 'A1 Bray From Beyond', a cinematic rumination as moving as it is nostalgic, before transitioning to 'A2 Miguel', a modern deep-house anthem dedicated to Mike Huckaby. 'A3 Birchy's Lament' follows, a hauntingly strewn, piano-driven slab of the early-morning deep house certain to move dancers into thoughtful submission. The B-side finds Zapata in jazz mode: like a Strictly Rhythm record, the three dubs on the backside-featuring key and piano solos by long-time collaborator and label hero Javonntte-pull together the best of the producer's musical tendencies, from slapping basslines to jazzy interludes.

Review: The latest Sex Tags Wania missive is a 10"-shaped soundclash between Phil Sherburne/Pitchfork agitator DJ Sotofett and a true legend of the Sydney scene in Carlos Zarate aka Zarate Fix (Thug/Sweet Chilli). On the A side, Zarate serves up "Sands Of Time," a smooth low-slung groove carried by exotic vocals reminiscent of Dead Can Dance's Lisa Gerrard; a nice touch. On the flip, Sotofett takes it down to grinding and slow-burning pace with the lysergic EBM styles of "Coiled (Acid mix)" which is one gutsy groove indeed; with a seriously nasty arpeggio covered in the right amount of rust and dust as we like!

Review: Sex Tags Mania chief Sotofett has had an ongoing friendship with Sydneysider Carlos Zarate, since appearing on the latter's Thug imprint with their collaborative Planetary Involvement EP back in 2016. Much like their previous outing, Arjun is another brazen tribute to the classic sounds of Detroit techno. From the classic hi-tech soul aesthetic of the title track with its celestial pads backed by bombastic electro-bass beats, plus sleazy G-funk leads. Speaking of which, the intergalactic funk of "Afroz" likewise gets its bass-heavy boom on, with melancholic strings and a wonky synth bass that's reminiscent of the Motor City's first wave - in particular Derrick May's Rhythim Is Rhythim releases.

Review: Sydney's Thug Records are back with label head honcho Zarate Fix teaming up again with DJ Sotofett on the Planetary Involvement EP. This follows up that great "Sands Of Time" release on Wania a little while back. The title track is a serving of emotive and deep techno that will appeal to fans of the Acido/SUED sound with its sonar blips, pan pipes and distant tribal chants and drums all working in perfect harmony. On the flip there's also "Solar Mixxx", a lush sci-fi ambient journey kinda sounding like a lost Rhythim Is Rhythm B side from way back.

Review: The young but already well-formed Deep Inspiration Show label continues its dedication to quality deep house with a new EP that comes as part of their international artist series. Zarenzeit from Zurich and Roger Versey from Arkansas open with 'So Smooth', a blend of rich keys, soulful loops and dynamic vocals over a sensual bassline. Melchior Sultana hails from sunny Malta and follows with 'Nothing Like It Seems' which features silky chords and a shuffling rhythm ideal for late-night sets. On the B-side, Jan Kincl from Zagreb delivers 'Sugar,' a fusion of house and cinematic disco with organic drums while Spain's Barce closes with 'Stigma,' a melodic union of deep house and techno.
