Review: Luminaries of the St. Louis and Atlantan experimental dance circuits, Blvck Spade and Stefan Ringer reign over similar territories in the niche downland of raw, soulful house. Here the pair team up for the first time ever for a notable Touching Bass debut, with Ringer handling production and Spvde masterminding all things poetic, choral and verbal. Building on both artists' slowly accrued, and now prolific, contributions to such labels as Eglo, FWM and Dolfin Records, this newly erected album-temple hears the duo shift impossible sacral brickwork by the force of composition alone, with star relic 'YOURZZZ' especially cultivating an inner sanctum of humid cowbell, funky acid line, and theophanic vocal run.

Brenda Boykin - "All The Time In The World" (4:05)
Step Three - "A Dream" (feat B More - instrumental) (5:51)
Review: This split release offers two laid-back tracks from the depths of Brazil. On the A-side, Brenda Boykin (a jazz vocalist with a rich, creative voice which was nominated for a BAMMY Award in 1997 for Best Vocalist) delivers a soulful cover of Louis Armstrong's seminal 'We Have All The Time in the World,' the theme for George Lazenby's one-time portrayal of James Bond as well as a real karaoke favourite. The B-side features Step Three's 'A Dream,' a funky instrumental track with B. More which became a dance floor favourite following its 1993 release. Pressed on red 7" wax, this one beautifully captures some timeless Brazilian rhythms.

Review: Matthieu Chedid and Seu Jorge's long-running collaboration reaches a new peak with this latest release. A-side, the track 'Parioca' brings together the duo's signature stylesiChedid's French flair and Jorge's Brazilian rhythms, resulting in a seamless fusion of groove and melody that invites listeners into a warm, joyful world where their distinct musical identities meet. The B-side's dub mix of 'Parioca' takes things in a deeper direction, layering hypnotic rhythms and atmospheric textures that open up the track, creating an expansive, dubby atmosphere. It's a perfect companion to the original, showing the depth and versatility of their musical partnership, which continues to evolve after more than a decade of collaboration.

Chunky - "DOT" (Zed Bias & Metrodome remix)
Sticky Dub - "Minerals"
Giles Smith - "Hercules"
Alex Nut - "Arcade Fun" (part 1)
Review: Massive jazzdance and UK bass fusions on the new e-glowup from Eglo (though the record is also released physically). Celebrating 15 years of the nominal "post-dubstep" label, this limited 12" EP hears four exclusive, unreleased tracks from an upcoming label-definer compilation, the third in a series. Born from the basement of Plastic People, the pressure has remained continuously on Eglo to keep the same foment of bass musical innovation that the club nurtured alive. Plastic People is a routinised object of nostalgia, and it is often deemed the last proper place for innovation in bass music before austerity Britain militated against it. Zed Bias's remix of Chunky's 'Dancing On Tables' with Metrodome - and the deep, bruk-inspired track, 'Minerals,' from Liverpool's rising star Sticky Dub - both prove this assessment totally wrong. Genius thrives. On the flip, we've also house legend Giles Smith (formerly of Secretsundaze) delivering fresh material, as well as label boss Alexander Nut making his official debut with the lo-fi electro house track 'Arcade Fun Pt. 1.' The full compilation, featuring artists like Shy One, Steve Spacek, and Fatima, drops in April.

Review: Japanese talent DJ Koco aka Shimokita is a hardcore 45rpm devotee. They are his chosen tools as a beat-juggling DJ who can do logic-defying things with his grooves. He is a regal on Bloom and already dropped serious heat in January with 'World Famous'. This time he is back with a fresh take on 'Made In New York' which is a 1985 classic by renowned Brazilian funk and jazz pianist Tania Maria. He brings his signature hip-hop flair and creativity with his trusted crew, 45trio, and enlists the dynamic saxophonist King TJ (DA-Dee-MiX) to elevate things further.

A spin-off from acclaimed compilation brand Soulful, Deep & Dope - introduced back in 2015 - this new series sees the much-loved independent imprint pushing further at the boundaries of soulful music. All with that customary Reel People feeling. Broken, Deep & Dope 2024, the series' first instalment, unleashes 20 superlative examples of the soulful 'bruk' (broken beat), nu beat and nu jazz sound that has so innovatively informed contemporary dancefloors around the world since its inception back in late '90s West London.

Review: On his new 12" for his own kickstarter label Cosada, easy riser Laseech beseeches us to dance. Jazzy, soulful house music enlists the emosh but unrushed voice of Swaylo, snaring the essence of heartfelt house in a power-of-three-tracks net. Awakening the legend Ron Trent from his slumber, his deep, percussive touch and copy-paste-happy vocal science adds a happily haphazard twist. Inspired by the melodic landscapes of the Adriatic, the inaugural label name "Cosada" holds out a personal meaning for Laseech, drawing from both an idyllic island and the street where his studio lies, symbolising his continued hope to make timeless music.

Review: Former Dope Jams record store legend and deep house devotee Anthony Nicholson has linked up with Swaylo for this new outing on the Bak Muzik label out of the US of A. It features two versions of the same tune, 'Love Take Over In Deep Dark Space,' starting with a vocal. It's a track that locks you into a deep mental state with its spiritual pads and open word musings, wispy chords and deft, airy drums. The instrumental dub mix is even more focused on the lushness of the rhythms and melodies. Sublime.

Review: Analog Recital's new album fantastically collides the worlds of lo-fi house and jazz-synth sounds on Inner Tribe Records. Clearly drawing inspiration from early jazz-house production but adding new ideas to that, the record combines dynamic dancefloor rhythms with crusty drums reminiscent of classic hip-hop and live horns as well as traditional African drums. It features Adrian M Nation from Antigua and Barbuda and Millicent from South Africa on vocals, while Aussie Horatio Luna is on bass to make this a truly pan-global and richly musical affair. By merging live instrumentation with late-night club vibes in this way, Analog Recital really impresses.

Review: German duo Session Victim have always been about much more than just club tracks - their music draws on their playing skills and formal backgrounds so comes alive with meaningful melodies and rich instrumentation that elevates each track above the norm. This new EP on their home label Delusions of Grandeur kicks off with 'Screen Off' (feat Ras Stimulant) which is disco house with bubbly basslines and a retro feel. It also comes as an a cappella and on the flip 'Light The Way' is a seductively smooth cut with Balearic synths and floating pads that will levitate you off the floor. An Iron Curtis Illuminati mix brings starry-eyed electro vibes and his reprise closes out a lush EP.

Review: True to the name, Nervous Records have always kept us on our toes, biting our fingernails, hind-waddling to the edges of our seats. That being said, they themselves have kept rather relaxed on the releasing front in recent times; any residual nervousness is mostly on our side. In a rare original EP move from the veteran garage house label comes Shaka with 'Hidden Lover'; this is the wisened work of a battle-torn Swiss producer, whose many previous outings on Yore, Mate, Selections and Vibes & Grooves has all paid off with this inclusion in said anxious pantheon. 'Sing With Me' brings nostalgic feet-sweeping recollections from singer Eva against modular rack rides and cowbells, while 'Sill Groovin'' sounds like the same location but revamped for the anniversary present: its grooving, cool, vitreous sound design recalls the clinking of martini glasses and the tinging of wine measures in a svelte art deco backroom.

The title track, 'Vector Smector,' offers a smooth groove with a classy piano solo that weaves through a polished electronic rhythm section. It's a delightful fusion that balances sophistication with a laid-back vibe. On Side-2 ,'What You Gonna Say,' introduces a funky edge, incorporating crowd noise for added atmosphere. The spacey keyboard work enhances the track's immersive quality, creating a dynamic and engaging listening experience. Review: Siffleur delivers two lively mashups that are all about energy and good vibes. Side-1 sweeps listeners away to a colorful, rhythm-driven world where primal beats merge with unforgettable vocals, creating a track that bursts with life. It's the kind of music that instantly lifts the mood, making you feel like you're in the heart of a vibrant, sun-soaked celebration. A touch of psychedelia really takes these tracks over the edge. Side-2 shifts gears with its soul-infused grooves, blending a retro vibe with an irresistible rhythm. This track will have you moving, whether it's a subtle head nod or full-on dancing. The beats are so catchy, it's impossible to stay still, even if you try. Both sides showcase Siffleur's knack for creating mashups that are not only fun but also deeply engaging, making this release perfect for anyone looking to inject some joyful energy into their day.

Review: Paul Sitter and Tony Lavrutz's collaboration on Eu e Meu Amor plays like a breezy stroll through sun-drenched sounds and smooth rhythms. Their work here pulls effortlessly from bossa nova and tropicalia, but without leaning too heavily on nostalgia. The production is tight and warm, with layered guitars and whispered vocals that could easily soundtrack a lazy afternoon. It's not overly flashy, but it doesn't need to be; the charm is in the simplicity, the way the melodies unfold and gently stick with you long after the record ends.

Hipness (4:34)
Review: An impressively retro-feeling "breaksoul" choice from London label Digga Please?, once again delivering on their promise to bring the finest in funk, soul, disco, rap, b-boy breaks and "all that good shit". First released in 2004 on the iconic Freestyle Records, 'Get It On' is a bona fide cut & paste classic, its break-do backbeat and slippery funk vamps harking a filtered Rhodes line; here an obscure r&b libretto sings demonstratively, warning us of an incumbent detailing of her preferred mode of frisking: "this is how we like to get it on!" The record then segues into a timeless Gil-Scott Heron sample and breaks-tastic track slathered in sax, attesting to a so-called coolness that can be tapped by anyone willing to ease into it: "hipness is not a state of mind, it's a fact of life".

Review: While the Reflex was the first to forge a career out of multi-track re-editing (which would have been called remixing back in the disco era, since you are rearranging using the original parts), plenty of producers have followed in his footsteps in recent times - not least popular disco and funk party-starter Smoove. Here he serves up a ninth instalment in his excellent 'Multitrack Reworks' series. On side A he does a stellar job in reinventing Depeche Mode's 'Enjoy The Silence' as a squelchy, synths-and-slap-bass sporting mid-tempo disco anthem, complete with spine-tingling vocal breakdowns. He opens side B with a stripped-back, dubbed-out take on Al Green classic 'Let's Stay Together', smartly emphasising the bittersweet beauty of the original version's orchestral accompaniment, before delivering a sweet, head-nodding take on the Emotions' 'Blind Alley'.

Can't Catch Me In Love
Review: Solene and J. Rawls team up for a delicious pair of pelagic, coolant nu-soul and house nocturnes, crossing the sparse but oceanic space between genres. On 'Love Moon', the producer and singer respectively cover such intense themes as late-night reflectivity and good company: "nothing glam, it's just you and me..." Solene intones this sombrely, as the last syllable is heard to trail off into a surfactant mist. Meanwhile, 'Can't Catch Me In Love' raises the emotive drawbridge once more, hoisting supporting pillars of kick drum and serene pan flute, as flirtatious gingerbread taunts are heard in the chorus, not to mention musings on past relationship blunders.

Human Nature (DnB Jungle O2 remix) (4:45)
Review: What is "human nature"? Tokyo jazz trio Soundtype attempt to answer this near-impossible question on their expansive new album, serving an intentional crossing between genres, styles, and ultimately, interpersonal, intra-specific, human differences. Aiming for a sound that "transcends all boundaries", the implication is that human nature is itself an ultimately permeable concept. That, however, doesn't prevent the band defaulting to certain styles, which range from downbeat nu-jazz to clarinetting jungle to hip-hop via gospel. Remarkably clear, with crystalline production, the record shifts through talent-flaunting jazz and hip pop tidbits, culminating on a wonky, gaslamp-lit title track upon which singer Kotetsu and fellow jazzist Yota Miyazato pair up for a culminate, fulminatory Michael Jackson cover.

Built on hypnotic jazz loops, tight house rhythms and a sample from Marlena Shaw's 'Woman of the Ghetto', it was a vision of dance music that was cultured, expansive and deeply groovy. Its sophisticated blend of electronic textures and classic jazz sensibilities earned it a rightful home on Blue Note Records, elevating it beyond clubs and into the canon of genre-defying music. It remains a defining moment of jazz-house fusion. Two decades on, Jorja Smith brought her unmistakable voice to the track with a smoky, soulful reinterpretation that paid homage while casting it in a fresh r&b light. Joy Orbison's remix of her version on Side 2 injects another layer of evolution. It stretches the track into a deep, slow-burning cut, rich in atmosphere and bass weight, yet restrained and emotive. Together, these versions celebrate the enduring legacy and adaptability of Rose Rouge across generations and genres.

Review: Steevio's Dod yn ol at fy nghoed (Return to My Trees) marks a compelling return to form with its first volume of a two-part vinyl and digital release. After overcoming pressing delays and transitioning to a carbon-neutral pressing plant, Steevio delivers a masterclass in live improvisation. This volume, recorded during the pandemic lockdown, captures the heart of Steevio's exploration into deep, broken-beat bass techno, blending polymetric rhythms with jazz-infused chords. The album features Steevio's distinctive approach to modular synthesiser performance, where each track unfolds as a unique journey from a blank canvas. The result is a vibrant, free-form collection that defies conventional techno boundaries, highlighting Steevio's evolution into a more abstract and experimental sound. Pressed on bio-vinyl, this release not only celebrates musical innovation but also reflects a commitment to environmental sustainability.

Pain Au Chocalat (with Extra Butter bonus Beat) (3:43)
Review: Galaxy Sound Company has become one of those cop-on-sight labels thanks to is cultured 45rpm edit series. This time, label staple, bedroom B-boy beatmaker and Michigan native Strictlybutters drops a sweet duo of beatstrumentals that skate, stomp and groove with great style. Side A's 'Espresso Con Panna' flips Salt of the Earth's 1984 gospel-funk banger 'Love Light II' into a bass-thumping, sax-smooth hip-hop gem that will enliven any party. The second offer is just as sweet: 'Pain Au Chocolat' is a Detroit-inspired and buttery groove dripping in jazzy Axelrod-esque flair. Pure head-nod gold.

If finds the band blend electronica, jazz, soul and ambient music in a fresh and distinctive way. After revisiting their past with Unplugged collections and the vinyl release of their debut album Finest Hour, this project is where the band now moves forward with a refreshed perspective. The EP, which features Ruby Wood's fragile vocals and live instrumentation, explores new sonic landscapes and pushes their sound further than ever before as a great taste of the full length to come.

As I Walk On By (Improvised Jam edit) (6:38)
Review: A veritable wave-making machine in the infinity pool of British nu-jazz, producer Tom Funk rocks up with another 12" instalment in his The Sultan's Swing Project, linking with Colin Curtis Presents for a five-track EP to complement the three LPs reeled off the top so far. The usual grift of jazz, jazz-funk and acid jazz instrumentation - plus trip-hop, downtempo, dub, Balearica, and Latinesque beats - are heard in full swing here, with an extra linseed oiling for the dancefloor. Rapid club-bound bossa nova sets the scene on 'Thinking Of You', while 'Copenhagen Connection' suggests a potential sonic espionage link between London and Denmark, as a moment of Baltic dark jazz marks the only point of downtime on the record. A closing 'As I Walk On By', replete with guest singer, redrapes the Dionne Warwick hookline in looser jazz culottes.

Known for his work with the Jimi Tenor Band, as well as collaborations with Laurell from Dalindeo and for being a member of the jazz trio Mopo, Eeti's solo work here dives into soulful, upbeat house music infused with virtuosic musicianship and plenty of great improvisation. The track features legendary musician Jimi Tenor on flute alongside contributions from various guest artists. The Way Of The Dragon (4:15)
Review: Sunaga T Experience is a solo project of the world-renowned famous Japanese DJ and producer Tatsuo Sunaga. He has dropped a wide array of sounds in single and album form including a great cover of Joni Mitchell's Blue album. His latest 7" marks the 100th release on Disc Minor and is named in honour of that. 'STE 100' is a lush, tender dinner jazz sound with muted horns and warm reeds over a meandering bassline. 'The Way Of The Dragon' is as lively a tune as you might expect given it is named after a martial arts movie. It has busy drums and jagged horn leads with plenty of percussive energy all carrying you away.

Toribio - "My Humps (So Real)" (6:28)
Review: Brooklyn producer, bandleader and DJ Toribio returns for the second 12" on his newly launched BDA Imprint. Going deeper into his lifelong jazz obsession, 'Bring Dat Jazz' does just that whilst gladly exhorting us to do the same. Spanning three impressively arranged originals on top of a wicked remix of Sam Wilkes and Jacob Mann's 'Dr. T' on the A2, the overall impression gained here is one of an artist's deepest possible immersion in not just jazz as a whole, but its wildest contemporary abstractions through styles like deep house, garage house and post-punk. 'Jazz Misconduct' conducts itself rascally enough, holding itself together by the thinnest house-swing string; then the B-siders 'Bumples' and 'My Humps' herald a brief rise in tempo, coming shortly before an unusual hip-funk dub flip: a leftfield turn through a subtle, misty piano and vocal tinkering with the end of a storied Black Eyed Peas song.

Slick Mission - "Time's Up" (Luke Una 5am Shabeen Proto House edit) (7:13)
Manu Dibango - "Jingo" (feat King Sunny Ade - Luke Una Dancing In Outer Space edit) (5:51)
Review: While he's not put out many re-edits of late, Luke Una has serious scalpel-job pedigree. Back in the 2000s, he and then DJ partner Justin Crawford released a series of largely disco-focused edit EPs on the hush-hush Electrik Souls series. Here he returns to the format with the first in a series of reworks focused on his popular, dusty-fingered E Soul Cultura project. He begins by teasing out and lightly toughening up a killer Caribbean cut from the 1990s, Ella Andall's 'My Spirit Is Music' - an insanely rare and hard to find number that the Sheffield-born DJ has naturally tweaked sensitively. Elsewhere, he emphasises the 'proto-house dub' feel of Slick Mission's early UK house number 'Time's Up', before going even dubbed-out and more percussive on Manu Dibango's lesser-known cover of Latin disco classic 'Jingo'.
