Review: Catawba Records celebrates 40 years of influential music with The Lowdown: A Catawba Records Story. Founded by industry legend Richard Mack who helped launch icons like Earth, Wind & Fire and The Jacksons, this curated compilation from the label highlights Catawba's rich legacy in disco and soul with standout tracks from Maurice Starr, Dutch Robinson and The Fantastic Aleems. It takes in all manner of infectious grooves with throwback analogue drums sounds, brilliant keys and smooth vocals with plenty of rare edits, unreleased gems and more well-known but still timeless cuts. Favourites for us include the lithe and leggy Silk jam 'Somethin' 'Bout The Way' and the soul-drenched funk-disco of Jackie Moore & Wilson Pickett's 'Seconds Of Your Love'.

Review: Penrose Records returns with Vol. 2 of its coveted compilation series, featuring 14 tracks of sweet soul from SoCal's finest. This LP brings together hits from the label's top 45 releases over the past two years, including standout performances by Thee Sacred Souls, The Altons, Vicky Tafoya, and Jensine Benitez. Newcomers Johnny Ruiz & The Escapers and Junior Scaife also make a memorable impression. Each track is steeped in vintage late 60s and early 70s soul influences, but the songwriting and performances elevate them beyond mere homage. Following in the footsteps of Brooklyn's Daptone Records, Penrose and its sister label, Colemine Records, have spearheaded the modern soul revival. The music is organic and raw, recorded without sequencers or excessive effects. Highlights include Thee Sacred Souls' 'Can I Call You Rose?' and Los Yesterdays' infectious 'Nobody's Clown.' Vicky Tafoya's 'Forever' is a lovely lowrider jam that captures the essence of classic soul. Pressed on vinyl with a pure, warm sound, Vol. 2 is perfect for any soul enthusiast looking to dive into modern takes on timeless grooves.

Review: Originally released by the Chess label subsidiary Checker, this fresh new gospel-soul compilation record is both a congregation of great musicians and a guiding moral star, coming replete with redemptive and tutelary messages. Compiled by Honest Jon's and laid to heavyweight gatefold 2xLP, the defining trait of this firecracker LP is its rough-hewn live feel, which in turn cements each artist's to-the-ground concern with the then developing political tone of the era. From Martha Bass to the appropriately baptised Soul Stirrers, the record also serves as an induction into the brilliant productive stylings of one Monk Higgins, whose motto was "spontaneity" and whose touch is heard on all of the sheet songs you hear here. Get on up!

Review: You'd think by the time any compilation series reached its 35th instalment, it would be scraping the barrel in terms of killer cuts to showcase. That's certainly not the case with the latest volume in the Masterpiece: The Ultimate Disco Funk Collection series, which has rustled up some genuinely brilliant - and largely little known - cuts to share. For proof, check the glossy, boogie-era disco-funk of Tammi Holt's 'Funk For You', the bubbly and polished 80s soul dancefloor flex of Jo Ann Jones' 'Share My Love (Club Mix)', Mark Mitchell's synth solo-laden 'Pretty Baby', Mel Strong's boogie-licious 'Uptown Lady', and the sing-along goodness of Sherrie Payne and Philip Ingram's 'Incredible (Dance Mix)'.

Review: Time Capsule exposes a few of the myriad pathways in Japan's 70s psychedelic soul wormhole, when a bountiful crop of music emerged from musicians inspired by homespun hero Haruomi Hosono's Happy End project, as well as the meandering ballads emerging from the dissolution of the 1960s protest movements. From the charming, Hosono-esque Francophile lounge funk of Hiroshi Kamayatsu's 'Have You Smoked Gauloise?' to the Tadashi Goino Group's strikingly sparse drum machine n' synth incantation 'Jikan Wo Koero Go Beyond Time', almost sounding like Goino is flanked by Vega and Rev at times, to the theatrical, almost duul-esque closing ballad 'Heya No Naka In The Room', the heads at Time Capsule assemble a compelling and kaleidoscopic anthology of forgotten Japanese gems.

Review: Down & Wired 7: A Dose Of Psychedelic Funk & Blue Eyed Soul is a gold mine of rare 60s gems, carefully curated for lovers of soul, psychedelic and garage rock. This compilation, released by Perfect Toy Germany, offers a cost-effective way to enjoy tracks that would otherwise be difficult and expensive to acquire, with original copies often fetching hundreds of dollars. Review: Soundway Records deliver a new compilation, delving deep into the many obscure and experimental disco cuts laid to record in 70s and 80s Southeast Asia. Here Soundway's longtime general manager Alice Whittington (aka. DJ Norsicaa) steps into the limelight, embracing her Malaysian heritage and selecting music from her heavy collection of Asian records. Taking its namesake from the Indonesian phrase for "let's go to the disco", Ayo Ke Disco spans ten rare slices of disco-funk, psychedelic funk, synth, city pop and Hindustani-Arabic rhythms, all painstaking licensed from the local labels whose efforts still often persist some forty years on.

Review: Pyramid deliver a wonderful new compilation of deep gospel from the 1960s and 1970s. Named after the Holy Light Jrs' eponymous slow jam, featuring as the lead track here, all the songs featured come corralled from the vaults of Pyramid's very own DJ Jumbo. Doing well to shine a light on the unbeatably sentimental mood that hung heavy over the Mississippi-born genre that emerged in the postwar period, the likes of 'Beams Of Heaven', 'Lord You Are My Burden Brother' and 'When The Gates Swing Open' all function as faithful, ivory-fingered devotionals and effective paeans for a better world to come.

Review: Five years ago, Sban Records unleashed Harde Smart, a fine collection of Flemish and Dutch records of the 1970s heavily influenced by Black American funk, soul, and dance music. This belated follow-up focuses on the 1980s, a decade in which the influence of American AOR, disco-rock, boogie, synth-pop and electro could be heard across plenty of releases by Dutch and Belgian bands. Highlights include the blue-eyed, synth-powered dreaminess of 'Drugs' by Omar & The New Sound, the P-funk-influenced flavours of Joost Belinfante's 'Zonder Woorden', the Zouk-splashed tropical boogie of De Div's 'Teken De Tijd', and the post-punk new-wave eccentricity of Nadagen's 'Onder 4 Ogen', which sounds like a Dutch take on Sheffield band Chakk.

Review: Acid Jazz top up their longstanding Rare Mod series, one of their most fervently clamoured-over compilations to have been conceived since their launch. A recent three-volume boxset set the tone for its recollection; and now, we're met with a further Best Of record, bottling the essence of the highly headsy and in-the-know series into a tighter thirteen-track compendium. Compiling the many lost classics without which there would be no 'sound' to typify the original Mod scene - a fusion of hard 60s r&b, freakbeat, soul and pop - the likes of Cathedral, Shyster, Fleur De Lys, Dog Soul, Maxine and Richard Kent Style all abound across a well-rounded quadraphonic crunch.

Centring on the curatorial efforts of TK Records founder Henry Stone, who is credited by Soul Jazz as one of the tastemaking pioneers of boogie, after the early ferments of gritty funk and soul formed out of the arrival of disco in the mid-70s. This compilation snaps up a distinct, unforgettable moment in the pivot from disco into soul, with essential tracks from Betty Wright, to Timmy Thomas, to Raw Soul Express, to T Connection all in tow.

Review: Since its inception in 2020, Kunimondo Takiguchi's City Music Tokyo compilation series has emerged as one of the most authoritative and reliable sources of 'city pop' gems - in part because he traditionally looks beyond the style's 1980s heyday and includes older and newer songs that fit into the celebrated style's colourful and Western pop-influenced aesthetic. There's naturally plenty of goodness to be found across the latest edition, subtitled 'Anagram'. The plentiful highlights include the joyous, boogie-era disco swell of Ami Ozaki's 'Love Is Easy', the quirky, big band-sporting eccentricity of 'Maya Maya Beach' by Yuko Kanai, the slow-motion reggae-pop warmth of Seiko Ito's 'Nagisa No Unlucky Boys' and the low-slung wonder that is Parachute's 'Kowloon Daily'.

Review: New Jill Swing is a vibrant throwback that captures the essence of late 80s and early 90s female r&Bb, offering a refreshing take on the male-dominated New Jack Swing era. This collection shines a spotlight on the talented women who matched, if not surpassed, their male counterparts, delivering smooth, soulful tracks that defined a golden age of R&B. From SWV's infectious 'I'm So Into You' remix to Karyn White's upbeat 'The Way You Love Me,' the album kicks off with undeniable energy. Gems like En Vogue's 'Lies' remix and Xscape's 'Love On My Mind' keep the groove going, blending attitude with vocal finesse. The compilation also includes lesser-known but equally powerful tracks like Ex Girlfriend's 'What I Will Do To You' and Chantay Savage's 'Betcha'll Never Find,' adding depth and variety. Each song is a nostalgic journey, perfectly curated to remind listeners of the era's distinctive sound. Overall, New Jill Swing is an enjoyable and well-crafted homage to the women who helped shape R&B.

This one, after loads that have focussed on everything form techno to soul to protest songs, is simply called Groove Diggin. Review: Whatever condition your condition is in, Soul4Real have brought together a crack team of the finest soul physicians to ensure you're feeling good. Having scoured all the shelves in the soul pharmacy - and handing out said potions like candy, despite them having only just made it through the trial stage - we can vouch, as your guinea pigs, that Soul Prescription is indeed the curatorial penicillin, a cure-all panacea for the soul-starving. From Arthur Alexander's magnificent 'I Need You Baby', which reached legendary status during the tape-swapping epidemic of the late 70s/early 80s, to repeat prescriptions of Maxine, Gil Scott-Heron and the Isleys, this one's anything but a placebo.

Review: In the late 1970s and early 80s, disco swept through dancefloors across the world, with musicians, producers and labels in all four corners of the world recording and releasing their own local variations on the New York-pioneered sound. This fine compilation digs into the Japanese interpretation of the sound, offering up a selection of gems pulled from the vaults of the Nippon Columbia imprint. As you'd expect, there are some genuinely soaring and delightfully over-the-top cuts on show (see Godiego's 'The Odyssey Begins - Monkey Magic' and the disco-funk mania of Ikue Sakakibara's bilingual 'This Is Hot'), alongside such forgotten or lesser-celebrated gems as Yumi Moreta's rubbery bass-propelled 'Krishna', the strings-and-synth-drenched brilliance of Pink Parachute's 'Disco Great' and the ridiculously grandiose 'Hazumi De Daitte (A Woman Inside a Man's Body)' by Hatsumi Shibata.

Review: The Wiz is a vibrant urban adaptation of the classic musical turned spooky-as-hell movie The Wizard of Oz, and it is set in Queens, New York, rather than the deepest Kansas as was the original. Featuring a talented Black cast, the musical stars iconic artists like Diana Ross, Nipsey Russell, Michael Jackson, and Quincy Jones and was a huge success. The soundtrack, certified Gold by the RIAA, was just as much of a hit and now it arrives on vinyl. The album includes hit singles such as 'You Can't Win,' 'Ease on Down the Road' and 'A Brand New Day.'

Review: This Is Retro Soul 1969-1979 offers a vivid journey through the golden age of soul, spanning from the late 1960s to the late 1970s. Featuring a carefully curated selection of tracks, the album highlights the creativity and innovation of artists like Isaac Hayes, Millie Jackson and cult figures like George Jackson and Darrow Fletcher. From the deep emotion of ballads to infectious dance grooves, each track offers a fresh experience for both longtime soul fans and those new to the genre. Songs like Millie Jackson and Isaac Hayes' duet 'Sweet Music, Soft Lights And You' and George Jackson's 'Love Highjacker' evoke the elegance and passion of the era. Meanwhile, rarer gems like Cesar's 'See Saw Affair' and Ty Karim's 'Lightin' Up' reveal the depth of the soul scene's more obscure talents. The diversity of this collection, blending funk, r&b, gospel and jazz influences, creates a lively and sophisticated atmosphere. This Is Retro Soul is more than a trip down memory laneiit's a timeless reminder of the depth and brilliance of soul's most innovative period, inviting listeners to rediscover this iconic music anew.

Many of these tracks in their original physical release form - you'd be looking at hundreds of dollars for the first pressings, so thank Numero Group for gathering these together and saving the fans from spending a lot of money and a lot of time finding them. Tracks like the amazing 'Mr.Lucky' by Betty Wright - which sounds fit for a blockbuster movie soundtrack - Trinikas' 'Remember Me' and the James Brown-like funk 'Good Things' by Pearl Dowdell are must have scarce tracks, but there's a host of yet to be discovered gemes here too, like Fay Cooper's 'Closer Together' and Betty & Angel's 'Everlasting Love'.

Review: Tramp Records celebrate a whopper milestone, with the label's 125th record taking shape as a reconnaissant celebration of 1970s soul jazz and funk, forming part of the Praise Poems series. Launched to fare an interminable journey through the many privately pressed, furtively released and/or criminally undersung jazz-funk-soul records of yore, and with an international focus, this is a rather special case of one such compilation series making it to its tenth edition, and still retaining the kind of quality control and assiduity most comp-curators may only dream of. From the opening, ultra-headsy 'Fields Of Laughter' by the chartless American band Color Me Blu, to instrumental AOR from pianist George Melvin's short-lived Quintet, you can expect to hear super-rarities here, with some originals only having heard but two acetates to their names at first press.

Review: Loving On The Flip Side compiles overlooked ballads from the flip sides of funk 45s in the Now-Again and Truth and Soul vaults, all presented in the same format as the Soul Cal anthology. This collection showcases incredible music that pairs heavy funk with sweet soul to create a sound the label calls "sweet funk." The journey began nearly a decade ago with the discovery of the Darling Dears and Funky Heavy's unique two-sided single which sparked a search that led to their full inclusion in this anthology. The process unearthed other soulful gems and now culminates in an essential exploration of black American creativity and musical innovation.

Review: The Colour Purple is one of those films that went against the odds in the wrong way - the second adaptation of Alice Walker's novel about a Black couple living in the Deep South around the turn of the 20th Century, it built on a legacy of acclaimed literature and cinema (Steven Spielberg's 1985 film), came with a strong cast and had $100million spent on it. Yet, after its release in 2023, despite great reviews and multiple award nominations, it grossed just $67million at the global box office. Musicals aren't for everyone, of course, although it's hard to find fault here. Songs range from super dramatic, almost tribal and certainly stage-filling epics, through to kitchen sink soul, roots, blues, R&B, hip hop, and power pop, and listening through even without the visual focus, leaves a big, long-lasting impression.

Review: Tiny but big-hearted German label Tramp Rec. share Praise Poems, their latest journey deep into the heart of funk music. A curators' comp like few others, Tramp's tracking-down and selection efforts are little-matched here, and their assurances are comparably thorough. For example: "this album needs time and patience to be fully understood. Be prepared to listen to this album in tranquillity. If you do not do so you will most likely rate this release one out of five stars." The mystification of a records by the issuer prescribing how one might listen to it is an old and well-known trick, but we think it may genuinely apply in this case: Gemstones' 'Cold Soul', Cookie Thomas' 'Black Velvet Soul' and Lee Stone's 'What Is Life' are all examples of soft-spoken rarities. All the tracks here, in fact, were recorded courteously and dynamically, and not bombastically; such was characteristic of the best Latin and North American blues, jazz and funk of the 70s.

As you'd expect, the standard is exceptionally high throughout, with Belson digging deep into his crates to present top-notch gems that will be all but unknown to all but the most hardcore gospel collectors. Volume 2 is equally as inspired, though the focus is a little different. Whereas Volcov previously chose to concentrate on soul, funk and disco, this edition is far more widescreen in scope. So, we get soaring soul-jazz bliss (Collective Peace's "Let The Music Play"), head-nodding hip-hop soul (Eric Lau remixing Ruth Koleva), futurist jazz-funk (Ron Trent's wild but brilliant "Ori Space"), soul-fired broken beat (Volcov's own re-edit of Xantone Blacq's vintage remix of Intuit's "Planet Birth"), impeccable soundscape jazz ("Lawra" by Tony Williams) and much more besides.

It is, of course, packed to the rafters with rare, slept-on gems, the majority of which change hands for silly money online. Highlights include - but are by no means limited to - the gentle gospel-boogie slickness of Sharnell Morton's "You Are My Shining Star", the glistening guitars and sun-kissed vocals of Direct Connec Shun's two-step soul gem "He's No" and the purple-coloured synth-funk hustle of Spice Of Ice's "Star Struck".

Review: Paul Weller is perhaps one of the best non-soul musicians to ask to compile a rare soul compilation. Rather than documenting soul music as it proliferated in the 1960s, Ace Records' soul aim was to capture a genre, fashion and style as one man saw it in retrospect, in light of his involvement in the mod revival of the mid 1970s. Weller would later go onto form and front The Jam, but in late 1974, shortly before his involvement in the punk movement, he was about none of that business at all. Punk partly grew on febrile tissues of mod, which was in turn an offshoot of 60s soul; and it is true that we may hear a foetal form of the sound in the brasher cuts on this record, be it Billy Stewart's 'Summertime' or James Carr's 'Pouring Water'. Also clock Brother To Brother's 'In The Bottle', a super-early drum machine blues gem perfect for the house heads.

Review: Almost 15 years after her tragic death and admission to the ill-fated '27 club', it's impossible not to tear up when thinking about Amy Winehouse. The untimely loss of such an incredible talent is one thing, gradually understanding that nobody caught and held such a vulnerable person in their time of need is what really hits the hardest. Back to Black, Sam Taylor-Johnson's biographical drama about the UK singer-songwriter and musician's rise to stardom, and the fallout, was never going to be an easy watch, then. As if we needed any more proof, the soundtrack really emphasises just how timeless Winehouse was as an artist. Highlights from her own incredible output are here - 'What Is It About Men', 'Stronger Than Me', 'Valerie', '(There Is) No Greater Love', the list could go on - as are some of the most evocative and captivating soul, blues and r&b tracks of the 20th Century. And there's nothing to separate these from each other, sonically, lyrically, or emotionally. We weren't worthy, and maybe never will be

Review: Adrian Younge's latest in the Something About April series is a stunning analogue opus that blends a 30-piece orchestra with breakbeats, synth work and Brazilian psychedelia. It has reportedly been years in the making and is the culmination of Younge's sonic vision as well as being his most expansive and experimental work to date. Brazilian vocalists, fuzzed-out drums and lush orchestration evoke MPB greats like Verocai and Os Mutantes and hip-hop kings Wu-Tang in equal measure. Tracks like 'Nunca Estranhos' and 'Nossas Sombras' are richly cinematic and deeply soulful standouts. More than a closing chapter, this record cements Younge's legacy as a visionary composer.
