Review: Vancouver's temple of lo-fi house returns with Braden Thompson aka Riohv, a producer originally from Saskatchewan, but now based out of Montreal via a spell in the capital Ottawa. Thompson is quoted as saying that his music "has a dual purpose; it has a place on the dance floor, but at the same time it's definitely something that someone could just zone out to" and this is evident on the Green Room EP. It starts out with the soulful and emotive electro of "Redux" followed by the rather "Sueno Latino" sounding title track which soon turns into some early '90s breakbeat driven rave anthem. The retro tributes continue on the flip, with the junglist roller "Juice It" calling to mind early Goldie or Alex Reece.
Review: Steffen Laschinski has been taking his time issuing forth a delectable brand of house music that deals in elegant melodic constructions and restrained grooves. That all comes out in abundance on the "Vintage Club" version of "Nostalgia", as a roving lead synth calls out across accompanying pads, leaving the beat and bassline in their own space to tick away dutifully. Convextion decides this is not the right approach and ditches the beat altogether, revelling in the cavernous resonation of thick chords bleeding into each other. Whichever side tickles your fancy, both cuts display a rich grasp of how to express
Review: Route-8 is a Budapest producer and this is his much anticipated debut LP. But the story is that it almost didn't happen because the original album was lost when the artist and his fellow Lobster Theremin crew had all their stuff knocked in Detroit while on tour of the US. However Route 8 began re-piecing the record back together and thankfully here it is. It's an album of causing house and techno tunes indebted to the sound of the American mid-west. Far sighted pads, deep beats, balmy ambience are all present and correct and make this a mini classic.
