Review: Horace Tapscott founded the Pan African Peoples Arkestra in Los Angeles in 1961, foregrounding community and expressions for Black people and their arts. Across their considerable legacy, this live album is one of the Arkestra's standout moments and now it's finally being repressed. Scott's leadership guides the Arkestra on a journey through the most life-affirming spiritual jazz, fuelled by Afro-centric rhythms, meandering basslines and soaring flute and horn arrangements. Recorded at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in LA in 1979, this double album is a stunning document of Tapscott's project during a golden era for underground jazz.

Review: Tarika Blue were a New York-based band who explored jazz fusion with a vibrant sound fronted by Irene Datcher's vocals. On their second album they presented a sound which could be sultry and fierce in equal measure, and their legacy was assured when Erykah Badu famously sampled 'Dreamflower' for her equally classic 'Didn't Cha Know' from Mama's Gun. The whole album is a wonder to behold, and this repress on Chiaroscuro should bring a deep dig back in reach for many a jazz lover.

It is now a full half a century old but has aged well and gets this special anniversary reissue for Record Store Day Black Friday RSD 2024 on brown marbled vinyl. Review: This album recorded by Tatum and Webster in 1956 came just prior to Tatum's passing less than two months later. Revered as a masterpiece, the dynamic interplay between Webster's blend of aggression and lyricism and Tatum's flamboyance and delicacy creates a captivating encounter, with Callendar and Douglass providing impeccable support. Reissued previously by Essential Jazz Classics, this new edition adds bonus tracks from a 1953 Tatum solo session and four numbers from a summit meeting between Webster and Teddy Wilson. The opener sets a languid tempo, diverging from the breakneck pace of many bebop jams, establishing the album's relaxed vibe. And even as later cuts quicken the pace, there's an underlying sense of ease that permeates throughout. Tatum's cascades of notes serve as ornamental accents rather than urgent directives, while Webster, despite the excess reverb of the era, focuses on melody.

Review: In 1957, Art Taylor brought together an all-star ensemble for a recording session that captured the swinging energy of his Taylor's Wailers group. Featuring Donald Byrd, Charlie Rouse, and Jackie McLean, this Prestige session showcased the rhythmic intensity expected from a drummer-led band. The inclusion of two Thelonious Monk compositions, 'Well, You Needn't' and 'Off Minor,' arranged by Monk himself, adds a distinctive flair. Another highlight is Jimmy Heath's 'C.T.A.,' featuring John Coltrane alongside Red Garland and Paul Chambers, a dream lineup of Prestige regulars. Taylor's Wailers embody the pulse and drive of jazz's golden era, making this a timeless addition to any collection.

Review: Cecil Taylor released Unit Structures on the Blue Note label in 1966. It was his debut on the label and was quickly followed up by a second album in the same year with Conquistador! This one came with an essay by Taylor entitled Sound Structure of Subculture Becoming Major Breath/Naked Fire Gesture and is known for its high energy and atonal sounds. It sat well within the plasm of the free-jazz of the times but was at the sharp end with its ferocious paying styles. It is a record rich on colour and mathematical complexity with two bassists adding their own low end weight.

Review: Cecil Taylor's Live at the Cafe Montmartre captures a transformative night in jazz, with Taylor leading a powerhouse trio featuring Sunny Murray on drums and Jimmy Lyons on alto sax. Recorded in Copenhagen on November 23, 1962, this landmark set is Taylor at his most innovative, merging fierce improvisation with raw, rhythmic freedom. The opening track, 'Trance', immediately challenges traditional jazz rhythms, with Murray redefining percussive timing, while Lyons' sax riffs anchor the swirling chaos. In 'Call', Taylor's piano spills out haunting, dissonant notes, crafting a noir-esque atmosphere that dissolves rhythmic boundaries. By the time 'D Trad, That's What' closes the set, the trio is in full flightia 21-minute frenzy that matches the legendary energy of Coltrane's performances. Legend has it that Taylor was inspired by a Coltrane concert the night before and the influence is palpable, driving each musician to extraordinary limits. Remastered by Dave Gardner for audiophile-grade vinyl, this release brings the brilliance and intensity of Taylor's pioneering vision into sharp relief. It's essential listening for jazz fans and anyone eager to experience the beginnings of true free jazz.

Review: At 88, Ebo Taylor, the legendary Ghanaian highlife and Afrobeat pioneer, made his U.S. debut at the Jazz Is Dead concert series, captivating audiences nationwide. This historic visit coincided with the recording of Ebo Taylor JID022, a groundbreaking psychedelic afrobeat album produced with Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. Younge expressed the significance of this collaboration, likening it to working with Fela Kuti, emphasising the dream of capturing Ebo's essence on analog tape. The album features swirling horns, gritty guitars and polyrhythmic percussion reminiscent of Taylor's seminal 1970s work, alongside spiritually rich backing vocals that evoke a sense of nostalgia. Ebo's heartfelt lyrics, exploring themes of love, peace and spirituality, resonate with nearly a century of wisdom. Tracks like 'Beye Bu, Beye Ba' and 'Kusi Na Sibo' impart life lessons on gratitude and divine provision, solidifying Ebo Taylor JID022 as an essential addition to his storied catalogue and a crown jewel for Jazz Is Dead. This release coincides with his eagerly anticipated tour across the Americas, showcasing the enduring legacy of a true musical icon.

Review: At 88, Ghanaian highlife and afrobeat legend Ebo Taylor made his first-ever journey to the US, performing in the Jazz Is Dead concert series. These shows, which sold out across the country, led to an unexpected and electrifying collaboration between Taylor, Adrian Younge, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad. The result is a psychedelic afrobeat album, recorded at Younge's Linear Labs studio, that's bound to thrill fans of both classic West African funk and afrobeat purists. The album channels the raw energy of Ebo's 70s recordings, with swirling horns, fuzzed-out guitars, and the unmistakable polyrhythmic percussion that made Taylor a revolutionary figure in African music. "Collaborating with Ebo Taylor is a bucket-list accomplishment," says Younge, likening the experience to working with another afrobeat pioneer, Fela Kuti. The analog recording style, embracing the gritty textures of 70s Africa, gives this album an authenticity that's impossible to ignore. Tracks like 'Beye Bu, Beye Ba' and 'Kusi Na Sibo' exemplify Taylor's profound lyricism. His reflections on love, spirituality, and gratitude echo his decades-long career, while the ensemble of Ghanaian vocalists adds a spiritual depth that transports listeners back to his prime. Ebo's son, Henry Taylor, also features, proving himself a formidable talent in his own right. This album is not just a nod to the past but a crowning achievement in Taylor's enduring legacy. For connoisseurs of afrobeat, it's a standout moment in both Ebo's catalogue and the growing canon of the Jazz Is Dead series.

The album showcases the trio's seamless interplay and innovative approach to improvisation with Taylor's delicate piano, Winstone's ethereal vocals and Wheeler's evocative trumpet creating a mesmerizing tapestry of sound. From the introspective ballads to the spirited compositions, Azimuth captivates with its emotive depth and musical sophistication. The Big News is their new album on Eight islands and it finds the ensemble merging virtuosity with innovation as each member brings a unique flair. The absorbing record blends Ohbayashi's intricate piano melodies, Williams' pulsating bass lines, and Smith's dynamic drumming and their synergy creates a captivating tapestry that effortlessly traverses various tempos and moods with effortless precision. The album showcases the trio's collective prowess with a rich tapestry of harmonies and rhythms that solidifies their position as a formidable force in the modern jazz landscape.

Review: In 2009, Congolese-Danish saxophonist and composer John Tchicai (1936-2012) diverged from his usual path in the 60s free jazz scene to record a straight-ahead jazz album. He surprised his loyal followers on the process but also won them over with the new direction. The album, In Monk's Mood, proved a big hit and soon sold out. Danish label Steeplechase has now served up this resume on nice heavyweight vinyl so it can be enjoyed all over again by past and future fans. The seven tunes are all easy to enjoy cuts with dynamic drumming and plenty of majestic sax lines.

John Tchicai Octet - "The Eucation Of An Amphibian" (feat Shabib Shibab) (15:53)
Review: Alga Marghen has been long renowned for its dedication to avant-garde and experimental sound art and now it ventures into new territory with Formalibera, a label devoted to free jazz. Its inaugural releases feature never-before-heard archival recordings by saxophonist John Tchicai, which were originally created in Copenhagen during the 1960s and '70s. This second album from the crew showcases two stunning performances: first is 'The Education of an Amphibian' with Shahib Shahab and then comes 'Beautiful United Harmony Happening' with Don Cherry. These landmark releases offer a rare glimpse into Tchicai's groundbreaking career and free jazz's radical evolution.

Review: During a trip to Lahore, Pakistan in April 2019, multi-instrumentalist and all-rounder jazz musician Tenderlonious set about a storied collaboration with local quartet Jaubi, laying down a set of six full, original instrumental ragas form a single one-day recording session. The result is the record you hear here; the emanative sounds of Indian and Pakistani classical music, acting as a framework for a spiritual interdiction between Tenderlonious on flute and soprano sax and Jaubi band members on tabla, vocals, sarangi and guitar. A determinant synth drone, lent to the euphony by Polish composer Marek Pedziwiatr, underlies the entire suite, lending this six-pack a not unfuturistic mood of brooding. Four years in the post-productive making, Ragas From Lahore is a pristine, on which the boughing lops of the tabla, the effortless flurries of the sarangi and apical vocal, and the arch-mood of overcoming and perseverance through strife, are felt with full sway. A deeply foreboding, but rewarding contemporary raga album.

You Know I Care
Review: Tenderlonoius has long been at the heart of the nu-jazz and broken beat sound that has proliferated over the last five for so years, as has his 22a label. They have both been prolific sources of new school sounds and old school influences and You Know I Care is another full length statement of skill from the man who has often worked in collaboration or with his Ruby Ruston band. It is a widescreen offering that ranges from brooding ballads to epic modal delights which will appeal to all sorts of jazz heads old and new. All the tunes are standards by some of Tender's favs including Jackie McClean, Clifford Jordan, Wayne Shorter and Duke Pearson.

Review: The latest volume in BBE's J Jazz Masterclass series is something of a stone-cold classic: then young Japanese pianist Makoto Terashita's 1983 album-length collaboration with legendary tenor saxophonist Harold Land. Somewhat surprisingly, this is the first time that the sought-after set has been reissued since, making it something of a must-have for serious jazz fans. Both players are clearly audible throughout the LP, with the accompanying bassist and drummer generally kept low in the mix. It's an approach that pays dividends from start to finish, with highlights including the poignant and picturesque "Dear Friends", the epic dancefloor flex of "Dragon Dance" and the raucous, high-octane thrills of "Crossing".

Review: The Original Jazz Classics series continues to uphold its legacy with the reissue of Clark Terry's seminal album, In Orbit. Originally recorded in New York in 1958 and featuring the legendary Thelonious Monk in his sole Riverside outing as a sideman, this album is a cornerstone of Terry's discography. Accompanied by Sam Jones on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums, In Orbit features Terry's inept talents as a trumpeter and leader. This reissue, pressed on 180-gram vinyl at RTI, benefits from AAA lacquers meticulously cut from the original master tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio. The packaging also features a high-quality Tip-On Jacket, reflecting the series' commitment to preserving the integrity of the original release, from cover art to liner notes. Since its inception in 1982, the Original Jazz Classics (OJC) series has been the benchmark for collectible jazz reissues. In Orbit is a prime album to reissue, offering a pristine listening experience that honors the timeless artistry of Clark Terry and his collaborators.

Ballad Medley: Here's That Rainy Day/Gypsy/If I Should Lose You (7:37)
Review: The Alternate Blues presents a standout gathering of three iconic trumpeters - Dizzy Gillespie, Freddie Hubbard, and Clark Terry - alongside jazz luminaries like Oscar Peterson, Joe Pass, Ray Brown, and Bobby Durham. Recorded in 1980, this album captures the essence of a classic jam session, showcasing the musicians' virtuosity and camaraderie. The slow blues jams on this album, each exceeding eight minutes, allow the players ample space to explore and express themselves. Despite the relaxed pace, the performances are emotionally charged, drawing listeners into the heart of the blues tradition. Granz's decision to release alternate takes adds a layer of authenticity, capturing the spontaneity and energy of the sessions. Highlights include Hubbard's soulful rendition of 'Here's That Rainy Day' and the stellar ballad medley featuring all three trumpeters. The interaction between the musicians is seamless, resulting in a cohesive and stunning recording. In sum, The Alternate Blues is a bookmark for jazz aficionados, offering a rare glimpse into the creative process of three legendary trumpeters.

Feeling Blue As You Are Feel (6:58)
Review: Terumasa Hino's "Into the Heaven" (1970): Despite Japanese jazzmen's limited international fame, Terumasa Hino stands out due to his collaborations with American musicians. Into the Heaven features Hino on trumpet, joined by his brother Motohiko Hino on drums, Hiromasa Suzuki on electric piano, Kunimitsu Inaba on electric bass, and Takeru Muraoka on tenor sax. The album's title track, spanning over 20 minutes, is a jazz fusion piece reminiscent of Miles Davis' work, while the B-side starts with 'Love More Train,' a brilliant, lengthy hard bop composition, and closes with the peaceful 'Feeling Blues As You Are Feeling'. Whether you are new to Hino's work or a fan, this reissue was very needed to bring it to the attention of music lovers and buyers everywhere.

Review: British library musician and composer Alan Tew has one of his many magnum opuses, Drama Suite Part II, reissued by KPM. With the label keen to flaunt its first edition's going rate on Discogs, Tew's follow-up to the first part is a holy grail for library music collectors, owing to its performative subtlety, breadth of mood, and doubtless bottling of several modish styles of the time: noir, dark jazz, explotiation theme music. The track 'Stonechange' in particular hears many coded rerubs, with many versions and sub-versions, as was of the factual, rationalistic and methodical approach to the library music of the 1970s and early 80s. It's also got an indelibly clean sound: as with all KPM reissues, the audio for Drama Suite Part II comes from the original analogue tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis.
