Review: If you've caught either Khruangbin or Leon Bridges live before, or indeed listened to anything by either band or producer-singer-songwriter, you'll know where this 20-minute EP is heading. The sleeve art, which gives more than a nod to the 1960s hippy movement, also offers a major clue.

Tripped out, smoked out, lackadaisical, bliss-infused overtures, honied and syrupy, easing you in so far that you don't quite realise how hard it is to crawl back out of the sugar-coated opiate haze. A collection of heady, hallucinogenic work for 21st Century high plains drifters, it's jazzy, psychy, lush soulful fare you'll be wanting to hear again and again, capturing the heat and slow pace of America's southern states with heartfelt songwriting from genuine masters. The result is something very special indeed.

Monophonics - "Love You Better" (3:06)
Kelly Finnigan - "The Shape Of My Teardrops" (4:30)
Review: Here comes a meltingly powerful 7" split single by Monophonics and Kelly Finnigan, a psychedelic soul band and a singer from California respectively. Monophonics' contribution is a classic: 'Love You Better', a catchy, soulful belter concerning a formerly broken relationship, and the sacrifices it takes to pick up the pieces. The flipside, meanwhile, is a newer one from Finnigan; 'The Shape Of My Teardrops', which reckons with grief in the form of a surreal, rimshotting slow jam.

Monophonics - "Love You Better" (3:09)
Kelly Finnigan - "The Shape Of My Teardrops" (6:05)
Review: American psychedelic soul band Monophonics, together with lead vocalist Kelly Finnigan, are back once more with the single version of their most recent album highlight, the vocal hooker-inner 'Love You Better'. The band's tight instrumentation are laid down rather effortlessly, and come as testament to their ability to shine through a strongly warm, lo-fi sound. Lyrically, the song is bittersweet, with both Finnigan's solos and choral backing vocals pining after what could've been, despite the song commanding a new-leafy, life-goes-on mood of confidence.

The Chairman's Portrait (6:41)
Midnight In Sodom (5:06)
Hoof & Horn (6:49)
Review: A collaborative EP between 2 Australian rock giants, this limited one-sided collectors disc comprises the 19 minutes long 'Satanic Slumber Party' split into three sections. 'The Chairman's Portrait' intro is a dark, heavily distorted spoken-word piece backed by dark rumbling guitars that explodes into the head-banging electronic banger 'Midnight in Sodom'. The angry lyrics are paired with awesome melodic guitar solos and chiptune noises, before shifting into noise rock territory. 'Hoof and Horn' takes up most of the runtime at a hefty 12 minutes, in which ambient drone begets experimental sound effects that are reminiscent of the liquid bass and synths favoured by producer SOPHIE. The track evolves into a demonic lullaby that wouldn't feel out of place in an episode of American Horror Story, and fans of 2 Mello's 'Atmospheric Horror Music Vol.1' will greatly appreciate this track. The EP is all-in-all a camp experience. An Avante-Garde, quintessentially fun blend of two incredible groups.

Review: Desert funkers Khruangbin announce their latest album A La Sala, turning their efforts inward to a more personal recollection of childhood and origination, and to reach a firmer understanding of what exact influences made this troupe who they are today. In contrast to their last record Mordechai (2020), uniquely conceived as a party record from the jump of its making, A La Sala (translation: 'to the room') is the measured, self-reflective morning after; lead singles 'May Ninth' and 'A Love International' pare back the layers even further than we could imagine Khruangbin pulling otherwise, making for emotional ponderings of the external world, inextricably tied to the internal as it is.

Review: 'Mordechai is another blissed-out record from Texan party-chill-psyche trio Khruangbin. It's also among the outfit's most defined and driven, a smooth, sticky hot funk odyssey made for hazy afternoon soirees. Leader Laura Lee is, as ever, unfathomably siren-like on vocals, her bass grooves aiding the process of seduction no end. Even at the most upbeat and anthemic, 'Time (You and I)', it's hard not to feel woozy and intoxicated by the pared-back breaks and guitar lick combination. Dance floor ammo for sure, as is Pelota. Overall, though, it's an album best savoured slowly, allowing you to fully appreciate every lackadaisical moment of opiate goodness, with tracks such as 'Father Bird, Mother Bird', 'One To Remember' and 'Shida' summoning stunning sticky, heavy, deep atmospheres.

Review: Inspired by the slightly unlikely collision of the Thai music of the '70s and The Shadows, Khruangbin - the name means 'aeroplane' in Thailand - are purveyors of a deliriously mellow and beguiling form of jammed-out power-trio guitar music - far removed from standard notions of psych and dreampop, partly owing to its pan-global influences, its nonetheless both psychedelic and dreamy, not to mention possessed of an unhurried, reflective and spacious lilt that renders this Texan-London outfit a rare treat in an information-saturated age, taking on delicate soul and funk with exotic atmospheres and making the journey feel both blissful and effortless.

Review: Smoked-out Texan psych troupe Khruangbin have picked a pretty apt moment to release this recording of their live show at Villain, Brooklyn. For starters, it's summer 2020, and if it weren't for a global pandemic there's a good chance a few of us would be recovering from the night before to a late-afternoon, or better yet early-evening performance from this lot at some festival or other. Secondly, because of said health crisis, we're all starved of the unique qualities that come from a band playing in the flesh. Dinner is definitely served here, then, via generous helpings of Laura Lee's bass-laden grooves and gorgeous, intoxicatingly airy vocal delivery. First laid down in 2018, when Khruangbin were touring in support of their second album, while 'Con Todo El Mundo' provides the majority of musical moments here, really 'Live At Villain' is a self-contained record - an hour or so of the band's typically magical and engrossing stage stuff, captured for keeps.

Review: Khruangbin has very much become the masters of the downtempo sphere over the last decade. The Texan Thai-funk trio makes spaced-out, star-gazing and gently psychedelic sounds with deep and dubby rhythms, barely-there but alluring vocal hooks and persuasive basslines. Mordechai was their third studio album back in June of 2020 and is an ode to everything that'd done to date. Building on their Thai and Iranian rock roots, they head into new ground with a subtle lyrical freshness and more widescreen world of intercontinental influences all perfectly fused into their own sublime sounds.

Review: In November 2022 Houston, Texas globetrotters Khruangbin settled into a three-night residency at Sydney's iconic Opera House. It was just one of many high points for a band who have woven their way into the hearts of so many through the transcendental power of their music alone, and now the show has been properly documented and released as a double vinyl epic for devoted fans to savour, whether they were there or not. There are career-spanning classics all over this set, from 'A Calf Born In Winter' to 'Friday Morning' and each song lives and breathes with the intuition and flair of the players involved as they give these spiritually charged tracks subtle tweaks and twists in the heat of the moment.

Review: What an experience it must have been to herald the lifting of lockdown at the helm of a band like Khruangbin, watching crowds reconnect with people and live music like it was the first time all over again. The Texan band have always been dedicated to capturing their live sound, and they decided to mark their life-changing 2022 tour with some choice recordings that not only showcase their own performances, but also the sets of the bands they shared the bill with. Their Live At album series has already taken in a show from September last year at Stubb's in Austin - a homecoming show for the world-roaming band, and it featured a host of their support acts and fellow performers too. Now they're presenting a fully-fledged split release with London's premier modern jazz explorers Nubya Garcia, capturing their performance from Radio City Music Hall in New York in March 2022. With a side of wax each, both bands sound utterly captivating in the live setting, and being placed next to each other helps bring the spirit of the evening itself to life in so many ways.

Rather than a straight-up live album, they decided to create a series of Live At recordings which not only feature choice cuts from Khruangbin's sets, but also showcases the music of the people they played with. In the case of this release, it's Toro Y Moi who get the A-side warm-up slot, recorded from their May 7 2022 show from The Fillmore, Miami Beach.

Review: It feels like every couple of years a new reissue of Kikagaku Moyo's magical 2013 album Forest of Lost Children comes around, but we are not moaning. This group is "a musical union between five free spirits" or in less poetic terms, band founders Go Kurosawa (on drums and vocals) and Tomo Katsurada (on guitar and vocals) plus bass by and Akira also on guitar. Their sound is as unique as any, with psychedelic, folk, prog-rock, psychedelic-folk-mixed-with-prog-rock and more all collided into one another on an album that keeps you on your toes and guessing at what might come next even within each track, let alone across the whole album. If you're a new interested party this is a great primer for what the band is all about.

Review: Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince - better known together as The Kills - present God Games, their latest ballad-rock opus for Domino Records. Composed off the back of a 100-dollar keyboard and in a makeshift studio nestled in an old church, God Games shoots squarely for a grandiose oeuvre, making use of stomping, brassy power pop motifs to evoke the sublime rapture of encountering god, whether that be in the raucous opening loom of 'New York' or the texturally gritty '103'. In an era where everyone plays god, and in which we all operate under the Nietzschean claim that god is dead, it seems The Kills could have the tools to light the way to a not-false idol.

Review: Fill Your Lungs is the third album from the acclaimed Aussie psychedelic rock band King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. It is one of many of theirs getting the reissue treatment right now and it came initially only months after their debut Eyes Like the Sky. The album hit No 12 on the ARIA Albums Chart and marked a quick change in style for the band. This album found them embracing their psychedelic sound even more and featured second drummer Eric Moore using a real drum kit as possessed to the keys and theremin of the debut. It's a greatly experimental album with memserising riffs.

Review: These Aussie psych-mayhem merchants have set their sights on releasing a terrifying five records this year, and only a fool or a cynic would deny they're capable of it, given the freewheeling abandon and hell-for-leather chutzpah they've delivered on each of their ten outings to date. Whilst the majority of bands habitually claim to be pursuing a uniquely uncompromising vision, few are as guileless and full-on as the outfit we feast on via 'Murder Of The Universe', one completely unafraid to deal with four-part sagas concerning Tolkein-esque mythical monsters and Japanese cyborgs via a kinetic and combustible melange of garage fury and third-eye-massaging acid visions. Who knows where King Gizzard are heading, but right-thinking folks will be willing them to keep their foot firmly on the accelerator.

Review: Aussie psych rockers King Gizzard & The Lizzard Wizard are an insanely productive and prolific group. Petrodragonic Apocalypse Or Dawn Of Eternal Night: An Annihilation Of Planet Earth & The Beginning Of Merciless Damnation is their 24th album and is base don jam sessions that finds them incorporating more heavy metal sounds than ever before. Lead singer Stu Mackenzie has explained that the album's concept is based around "humankind, and it's about planet Earth, but it's also about witches and dragons, and shit." It's a fine follow-up to the band's thrash metal album Infest the Rats' Nest and will keep them well in with fans old and new alike.

Review: One of the greatest things to happen to the vinyl industry, the beloved Australian rock collective are a force to be reckoned with in terms of releases. For all their conceptual and experimental releases however, 'Omnium Gatherum' works exactly as prescribed - a latin phrase roughly translating to "just a bunch of stuff". The double LP is a collection of reworked unreleased material, as well as original music tacked on to boot - King Gizzard fans never have to worry about getting bang for their buck. Expect frenzied shredding, nu-metal cuts and the occasional synth-pop banger. The real highlight here is 'The Grim Reaper', a fusion of hip-hop and medieval instrumentation if you can believe it. Kenny-Smith's flow is no doubt influenced by the Beastie Boys era of hip-hop, a style being repopularised by the likes of Joey Valence & Brae. The album is a crazy patchwork of genres that feels not unlike watching your favourite movie in the form of a highlight reel.

Review: It's hard to side with anyone that goes in hard on enigmatic epic metallers King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. When a band releases 24 studio albums you know they're sure of themselves and cult followers are almost guaranteed to support every release. When those releases come with names like PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation you also know the band don't really care for people who take things too seriously. There's always been an interesting juxtaposition between the Gizzard's tongue in cheek persona - even the band name smacks of wry humour - and the music itself, though, and this outing is no different. Sprawling guitar-fuelled arrangements that owe as much to post punk as psychedelic and prog reign supreme, making for another powerhouse outing you can love or feel indifferent towards, but never legitimately hate.

Review: Kyle Thomas is the name of the singer-songwriter who records and performs as King Tuff. During the pandemic lockdowns he had something of a realisation about who he was and what he wanted to be and then "set out to write a love letter to those cherished moments of inspiration and to the small town that formed him," namely Brattleboro, Vermont. This is that love letter and it is an album of musical magic with uplifting and spiritual joy found in every hook and verse. There are gorgeous orchestral tones, tender moments of violin and cello and plenty of thoughtful sax lines on a gem of a record.

Review: .Celebrated Polish composer Andrzej Korzynski defined prolific. The musician was behind some of his homeland's biggest musical hits of the post-World War II communist era, through to the late-1990s, while his work on soundtracks helped create some truly iconic movies from those decades, including Andrzej Wada's The Birch Wood and Man of Marble, and Andrzej Zulawski's The Devil and Possession. Tajemnica Enigmy, or Secret Enigma, represents all the other bits - work that had been presumed lost behind the Iron Curtain and socio-economic and cultural overhaul that took place following the collapse of the USSR. Recorded in studios from Warsaw to Paris, it's psychedelic rock, sublime pop, noise, avant garde, electronica and so much more, not least strange, otherworldly suspenseful stuff and funk-driven party rock 'n' roll. Quite the deep dive.

Review: Opening on the grinding powerhouse of 'I', Kosmik Sun present three tracks of epic, cinematic heavy rock-metal which gives a nod to the likes of Mogwai and Explosions In the Sky. Albeit here things seem to have taken more of an influence from darker places, with each part of the triptych casting an eerie spell over the listener, transporting them to psychedelic, doom-laden otherworldly places. The side project of German aficionado Eugen Kohl, best known for the Crypt Witch project, Kosmik Sun also features members of Coven Spell and Devil Leaf, which, if nothing else, should let any newbies know exactly what they're in for. Steeped in deep stoner atmosphere, not to mention exceptional, gritty musicality, this is intensity for thinking people and it never lets up.

Review: Returning in their usual captivating style, Kula Shaker's latest album, Natural Magick, maintains their spellbinding blend of psychedelic rock, Indian classical nuances, and Britpop influences. The long player unravels as a distinctive sonic expedition, showcasing Kula Shaker's renowned fusion of mystical lyrics and intricate instrumentals, infused with spiritual tones and experimental vibes. While still resonating with the essence of the 90s alternative scene, the album introduces some of their most potent compositions yet. Each track serves as a blazing psychedelic sermon, accompanied by raga-tinged raves, adorned with "pop pearls and mood-enhancing mantras," solidifying Kula Shaker's continued prowess in their unique realm of musical enchantment.

Review: The KVB's forthcoming album Tremors, marks a significant return for the coldwave duo. Described as 'dystopian pop,' the album promises a fusion of industrial-tainted synths with post-punk percussive patterns, capturing the warped energy of their live performances. Lead single 'Labyrinths' offers a visceral experience, with sloping bass-lines and imposing production delivering unbridled aggression reminiscent of the band's early releases. The album represents a culmination of the duo's evolution, blending emotive impact and pop hooks within a uniquely shadowy atmosphere. As pioneers in atmosphere mastery. A cinematic journey through themes of loss, resistance and inevitable change, making it their most complete album to date.

Review: British synth wave duo The KVB has always had a psychedelic tint to their sound, so it's no surprise to hear them embarking on a project like Artefacts for this new album on Cleopatra. The pair have dug back through heir record collections and settled on a grip of tracks to cover in their distinctive style. The selections are varied, from outright freakniks 13th Floor Elevators to Them, The Troggs and The Pretty Things, but as you might well expect none of the choices have been obvious ones. As a result, and given the strong artistic stamp of The KVB's shadowy synth sound, this is solid a KVB record as any of their original output and brilliant with it.

Though it's billed as a solo record, Kyra's album is backed by the members of the Headcotes and is a surreal, lo-fi excursion in garage-punk in its 90s heyday.

Review: Stoner rockers Kyuss were epitomisers of the sound in their day, but after a respectable spate of four albums, the band went their separate ways in 1995. After all bitternesses and resentments bowled over, they found it in their hearts to look back - and this selection of 15 rare tracks brings together the best cuts of live material, B-sides and more. This is fast-paced, moody and fearsome rock.

Review: Texan funk-dub stalwarts Khruangbin set aside their own inward-looking solo projects for another collaborative endeavour. Following their first collab with Leon Bridges, they've now covered the work of 'African rock royalty' Ali Farka Toure, alongside his son, Vieux. Toure is a much-celebrated Malian musician whose 'desert blues' evoked a similarly African, primordial version of Khruangbin's Western cosmic folk. While their music came up in completely different times, the throughlines between the Khru' and Toure's musics are far from tenuous; together, the band and Vieux Toure paint a diasporic picture of a legend's music and life, musically documenting the influence his music has had on subsequent generations.
