Review: Laurel Aitken's High Priest of Reggae album is an early classic of the genre from 1969, and it captures the ska pioneer at a pivotal moment when he was blending his Jamaican roots with the evolving UK reggae scene. It came on Pama Records and shows Aitken's versatility with cuts like 'Jesse James' and 'Landlords and Tenants,' both a testament to his storytelling lyrical prowess over inventive rhythms down low. The record was further teased with 'Birds of a Feather' (featuring Ashleigh Ball from Hey Ocean and vocalist Jay Malinowski) and 'Beyond Four Walls'. All those tracks are included alongside some superb new songs. They add up to a reggae and ska classic that leans on the old school but also brings plenty of fresh new styles.

Rooted in powerful religious and social messages, the album carries a deep political undertone throughout. Quite notably, it also features a superb cover of Bill Withers' lovely 'Ain't No Sunshine' as part of an album that marked a significant evolution in Boothe's fusion of Jamaican soul and reggae.

Review: Reggae Charmers was originally released in 1970 and it showcased the best of Lloyd Charmers, who was born Lloyd Tyrell. His career spans Jamaica's vibrant musical eras from the late 50s shuffle r&b and ska boom to the rocksteady and roots reggae of the 60s and 70s. Across those years, Charmers excelled as a vocalist, session musician, and producer and after taking up the piano in 1966, he soon formed his own band. It backed artists like Ken Parker, Max Romeo, Pat Kelly, John Holt, and Slim Smith & the Uniques while Charmers also sang with the Uniques and gained a reputation for delivering some of the era's most compelling rhythms.

Review: Back in the mid-to-late noughties, musical polymath Bruno Hovart (Patchworks, Voilaaa, Mr President, Uptown Funk Empire etc) helmed a revivalist dub reggae band famed for delivering dusty cover versions of soul, pop and rock hits. Hovart is a dab hand at making anything he touches sound scarily authentic, and much of Version Excursions, the band's now reissued debut album, sounds like proper Jamaican rocksteady, roots and ska of the 1970s. It's a simple idea, brilliantly executed, with highlights including their covers of 'Seven Nation Army', the Rolling Stones' 'Miss You' (reimagined as a toaster-sporting disco-reggae jam), and Led Zeppelin's 'Whole Lotta Love'.

It's a delightful work of lovers' rock and roots magic that is centered around his impossibly pure and soulful vocals. They convey all manner of emotions from pain to joy over clean dubs and acoustic guitars. The hooks are catchy and their rhythms percussive, with joyous like 'Don't Stop' and more rueful vibes such as 'You're Eyes Are Dreaming' all sounding as good as ever.

Review: Leonard Dillon aka Ethiopian is a bonafide reggae legend who was backed by a top shelf selection of musicians for this previously unreleased album. Omnivore Recordings have acquired Nighthawk Records and Blackheart Music Publishing which is what has made this possible, and they do a fine job with it. The original album was recorded in 1987 when Leonard had already penned two great albums. This one was inspired by hearing tales of a Jamaican drummer on tour who talked of playing with a hot studio band. Leonard wanted to recreate that, and so followed this all-star session band.

Review: With their high tempo combination of ska, metal, punk, funk, reggae and soul, many elements of Fishbone can be compared to other bands, but the group themselves have always sounded quite inimitable. Consistently invoking good times, they garnered a truly cult following, drawn by their diverse influences (and membership), pithy wit and razor sharp social commentary. A Los Angeles troupe held very close to many hearts, Fishbone, a five track EP, defines all that hyperbole. It's energetic, engaging, fun, but unarguably accomplished lyrically and musically. Featuring 'All We Have Is Now', their first single featuring longstanding member Chris Dowd since 1994 (he was with the band from formation in 1979 then went on hiatus), here's more than enough proof they're still as irresistible as ever.

Review: Frightnrs are considered one of Daptone's best artists but they have put out any new music since 201 after the tragic passing from ALS of the front man, Dan Klein. That wrong is righted here with Always, a new posthumous long player that comes on black wax as well as a coloured version. As fans would expect, it is a raw and soulful offering from the Queens-based reggae outfit that has been built around vocal stems that Klein recorded before his death. It forms a fitting final album from this outfit who also did more than reggae revivalism by adding elements of Motown, doo-wop, Blues and gospel.

Review: Nigerian disco-boogie act Galaxy's sole, self-titled album has become a holy grail for Afro-boogie collectors over the last few years, so it's no surprise to see Italian crate diggers Mondo Groove giving it the reissue treatment. It was produced by Jake Sollo - one of Nigeria's premier funk and soul musicians of the '70s and '80s - and recorded in the UK, though it was originally only ever released in his home country. Review: LA based Black Market Dub like to rework great artists of decades gone by through a new sound system lens. This time it is the great 80s pop duo Hall & Oates who get the treatment with six of their most well-known tunes all reworked at slower tempos, with natty guitars, horns and rolling rhythms bring a new and sunny perspective. 'Private Eyes' in particular sounds superbly laid back and sun kissed for Balearic sessions and 'Maneater' also does the business with the original vocals soaring over lazy chords and amidst oodles of echo and reverb.

Review: You can probably work out what's going on here from the title: a superb collection of reworked Hall & Oates classics inna reggae style. They are the fine work of Black Market Dub who likes to reimagine classic sounds through a 70s Jamaican lens. The techniques used throughout are superbly authentic with hissing hi-hats, lazy tumbling beats and snaking baselines. The vocals remain in their original, often polished, falsetto style and extra horns are added for a lush sunny impact. Great fun, but also great quality.

It's a flawless gem of island boogie smoothed out to a gentle lull, buffeted along by breezy guitar licks and mellow Rhodes, quite happily reclining on a melodious phrase or two for as long as necessary to ensure ultimate relaxation. 'H2O' in particular is a float-adrift masterpiece, while 'Beauty & Beast + Bagel (Dub)' teases a little intrigue in amidst the placid waters without kicking up a fuss. Now it's being repressed on appropriately clear blue vinyl, bringing a perfect nugget of chill-out charm within reach for all your lounging, poolside or hammock-based needs.

Review: Legendary reggae vocalist John Holt was such a powerful and potent role on the mic that his 1000 Volts Of Holt album title is a perfect summation of what he brought. It is no wonder then that the Jamaican reggae singer and songwriter can be heard on tons of classic tunes and records across the seventies. For the fascinating Peacemaker, he worked with plenty of talented musicians (Sly and Robbie and Lindel Lewis were amongst them) and recorded across Jamaica and the UK. Review: Kalita Records have secured the first ever official reissue of Jivaro's lovely Saturday Fever album. It is said to be one of the best ever kwaito and bubblegum pop records to have ever come from the fertile South African scene and was first released on Maurice Horwitz's Music Team label in 1989. It serves up plenty of sick prog-house grooves and post-boogie sounds, with fat synths, tiny drum machine programming and a catchy Afro vocals that energise and enthuse any DJ set. This has been sourced from the original master tapes so you can be sure it sounds fat.

Review: Anthony Johnson spent lots of time in London despite being from Jamaica and it was during his time in the English capital that he recorded this album, Togetherness, which to this day endures as one of the dynamic dancehall man's best works. It came in 1993 and took in and spat out many of that era's big sounds - pop, ballads and of course dancehall. His singing is superb throughout as you would expect of someone who worked with all the greats, from Lineal Thompson to Lee "Scratch" Perry. Something of a lost gem, this album is now available again courtesy of Radiation Roots.

All that history is distilled into this sublime selection of sounds across four vital sounds fo wax. There's reggae, dub, ska, a cover of Joy Division, head twisting goodness from Gentleman's Dub Club and plenty of exclusives. It's an essential listen, basically.

Review: Hugh Maddo's Pop Style is one of those super rare but cult late 80s reggae and dancehall albums that just hit a perfect sweet spot between styles. Thankfully, Death Is Not The End sub-label 333 has got the rights to this full reissue of the original which was recorded in Jamaica at Byron Lee's Dynamics and Herman Chin-Loy's Aquarius studios in 1987. Review: Africa Unite (named after one of his 1979 tracks) is an album that finds Bob Marley's greatest tunes all reworked in a contemporary Afrobeat style by fine modern African musicians. It's a great project that Marley himself would surely have approved of and would have no doubt been involved with had he still been around. Often times the vocals are left quite similar to the originals, but reworked into languid electronic rhythms with nice noodling synths and plenty of brass and horns. Standouts for us include 'Redemption Song' (feat Ami Faku) and 'Three Little Birds' (feat Teni & Oxlade).

Review: Lloyd Parks was born in May 1948 in Kingston, Jamaica, and went on to live a rich life in reggae that made him an icon of the genre, in particular, known for his soulful melodies and fantastic bass playing skills. He began his career in the late 1960s with the Invincibles band before later forming The Termites with Wentworth Vernal. As a solo artist, Parks achieved success with his 1973 hit 'Officially' which also became the title of this sought-after album. Up there with the best of them is Man From Wareika which has been reissued many times over the years and this time out comes on lovely translucent gold vinyl. His style of reggae is swaggering and sun-kissed, with lazy trombone leads bringing character to each tune and plenty of neat organ work and natty melodies layering in extra musical vibes. This is regarded as a classic of the genre for good reason.

Review: Celebrate The Bullet was the revered second album by The Selecter back in February 1981. It came on the heels of the massive debut Too Much Pressure and a serious run of singles including the likes of 'Missing Words' and 'On My Radio.' Here though things slowed down a little with lyrical commentaries still coming thick and fast on everything from racial to social issues. At the time, the recent murder of John Lennon and an assassination attempt on U.S. President Ronald Regan meant the album got little to no mainstream support because of the title. For this special reissue, the original production tapes were dug out and remastered by Alchemy Mastering at AIR.
