Review: The latest alt-rock, shoegaze and alternative fusion band to emerge from Ireland is Cardinals (thank you kindly - we really do like to stay at the bleeding edge of things). Though this is their titular EP, it actually follows up three former releases, continuing to prove their 'rising' status. Through a set of noisy but romantic jaunts, the likes of 'Unreal' to 'Roseland' to 'If I Could Make You Care' recall of everything from theChameleons to the Smiths to Slint to Matt Molloy, making for a unique smattering of influences that nonetheless all fit well into the multiplicitious, difficult-to-fit-into indie Pandora's box of today. Producer Kathy Kurasch and Carter's sister Jan discovered the unreleased material and paired Carter's isolated vocals with the current Faragher Brothers band. The B-side features a new recording of James Brown's 'What My Baby Needs Now' using Carter's live 1976 performance. This single, which perfectly celebrates Carter's legacy, is available on a 7" vinyl courtesy of Record Store Day 2024.

Review: "Ushering in the week he knelt down and crushed his brother's head in with a bone / It's my great privilege to walk you home." So go the opening lines to Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds' summer 2024 single, 'Frogs', and the first words written for the first track on the seminal group's forthcoming album, Wild God. Tackling the first murder (of many) to take place in the pages of The Bible may not sound like the easiest thing to do convincingly in rock & roll form, but once again Cave and Co show themselves to be among the greatest living song-masters, pulling off a sweeping, soaring, and emotionally rapturing anthem that feels destined for their list of all-time greats. Epic stuff.

Review: Cindy is set to unveil their new six-track EP Swan Lake through Tough Love. While the title doesn't directly reference the famous ballet or folktale, it evokes an image that is familiar yet open to interpretation. Review: "Everything is being transformed and yet nothing changes" sings Andrew Burnett on the aptly-titled 'Everything Is Moving.' It's been a fair while since we last heard from Paisley-Glasgow's jangly-indie-poppers Close Lobsters, and by all accounts their triumphant and unarguably catchy return pretty much sums up where we're at in February 2025. So much seems to be changing. And yet, when all is said and done, most of us are still going to be left in the same vulnerable position we started out in. But let's not get too bogged down in geopolitics. Better to focus on the four tracks that make up this resurgent EP. Opening on the title song, Stepping Across sets its stall out somewhere close to The Lighting Seeds, and double down on that position throughout. It's uptempo, summer-sounding stuff that doesn't shy away from exploring reflective themes. Oh, and probably worth noting the excellent, tougher and drummier 'Stepping Across (Temporal Transgression Mix)' that closes the package - arguably superior to the original.

Review: Talk about being truly timeless. Chicano soul sensation Johnny Benavidez is the kind of artist who can figuratively, and spiritually, transport listeners to a golden age of Doo Wop, funk, and R&B, writing tracks and songs that glide on a smooth, easy listening cloud but still pack plenty of bite when it comes to the nitty gritty. Music to move you in many ways. Grandson of John Lorenzo Guzman (background vocalist for Sonny Powell & The Night-Dreamers), this relationship has a lot to answer for, with Pa encouraging Jr to take up singing and pursue music seriously. We're glad that happened, given My Echo Shadow & Me - a two tracker that could almost be considered retro or pastiche, if it didn't sound so damned fresh. Or at least ageless.

Review: Comet Gain, a British indie pop band formed in 1992, have been crafting their distinctive sound for over three decades. Led by singer-songwriter and guitarist David Christian (aka David Feck/Charlie Damage) and Phil Sutton, their music draws from post-punk and Northern Soul influences. Starting with homemade cassette demos, Comet Gain's releases have spanned labels like Wiiija Records, Fortuna Pop! and Tapete Records. Despite numerous lineup changes, David Christian has remained the constant force behind the band. Early gigs saw them supporting acts like Stereolab, Television Personalities, Bikini Kill and Heavenly, and they also recorded several Peel Sessions, touting a musical style ranging from soul-influenced indie pop to early-80s alternative pop and punk. This 7" record features two tracks recorded in the Spring/Summer of 1996. Side A's 'Only Happy When I'm Sad' and Side B's 'Dreams Of A Working Girl,' appearing on vinyl for the first time, originally debuted on the NME C96 compilation CD.

Review: Discodelic comes correct again with a new 7" that features a pair of rather lesser-known and brilliantly obscure Latin psych-rock gems. Conjunto Raza' 'African Dream' is all crackly and immediately nostalgic because of it, with noodle acoustic guitar sounds making way for a more upbeat and driving 60s garage rock sound but all in loveable lo-fi. Add in a red-hot vocal and you have a flame cut full of funk. On the reverse, The Scepters 'Message' is another well-aged jam that brings rawness and emotion in equal measure.

Review: The Scepters, formed in 1967 in Paraiso by guitarist Celso Spencer, were a popular Panamanian band known for their energetic performances across military bases and high school dances in the Canal Zone. Alongside Lionel Best and Jose James, they covered Top 40 hits and iconic rock bands like Santana and Jimi Hendrix. They released two 45s, including 'Message,' which debuted at Panama's first National Soul Music Festival in 1971 and features next here to a jam from Conjunto Raza, another project led by Agustin Leiro, this one with rotating musicians. They released a single 45 on Onda Nueva in the mid-70s and it blends Zonian and Panamanian talent with aplomb.

Review: "The world's greatest two person rock 'n' roll ensemble, the next big thing - out now!" You can hear the delicious wit and parody in the copy sitting on The Courettes website, a band that have managed to do the unthinkable, swerving all trends to come up with music that simultaneously sounds self-aware in its retro nostalgia, yet incredibly fresh. Hailing from Denmark and Brazil - another curveball in many ways, California, which welcomes the additional vocals of La La Brookes, is a case in point. Jangly yet snarling garage rock, seductive art pop aimed at the charts, beach guitar stuff that supplants realism and experimentation for the doe-eyed dreaminess of, err, beach guitar stuff. Original as ever, it's more evidence that these guys may well be on the money with that description of themselves.

Review: Climactic, psychedelic soul and blues brilliance by Don Covay, co-written by Donny Hathaway and backed by a proto-Balearic sweetmeat on the B, Harvey Mandel's 'Baby Batter'. The A-side was originally released one year after (1972) the B-side (1971) on the American Janus label, and the tracks provide a palpable contrast, drawing on the same idiom yet approaching it with remarkable difference. Covay's lyrics are, thematically, overflowing with determination, despite the psychic conflict at the track's heart. Is there any resolution? "The sweeter you, look, mama... the bitterer you treat me..."

Review: A pair of Cure singles, one a classic from the 80s and the other more of a deep cut from the 1996 album Wild Mood Swings, caught here in the live arena on turned into two sides of a rather nifty 7" picture disc. 'The Walk' is one of the Crawley crew's most electronic moments, a Japanese-slanted retort to New Order's huge 'Blue Monday' single a more cynical observer might be moved to admit. It's immediately nevertheless one to transport you back to the lazer-peppered, smoke machine-swathed dancefloors of the era, with its concluding line "I remember everything" seeming particularly apt in hindsight. 'Mint Car', while less well known than many other Cure 45s, was nevertheless one of Robert Smiths' favourites. He, apparently, couldn't fathom out why it only charted in the low 30s when 'Friday I'm In Love' smashed the top ten. Perhaps the outbreak of utter cheeriness - "I really don't think it gets any better than this/vanilla smile and a gorgeous strawberry kiss" - was disconcerting considering the band's pretty much unrivalled reputation as the popes of mope, but its charms are undeniable and definitely due a restrospective reappraisal.

Review: The revitalised singer Constantine Weir, who you may know from work with Galliano, makes a welcome return with some incredibly powerful soul. It comes on his own already interesting young label Itez and opens with the yawning and sun-kissed sounds of 'Dried Tears' with aching vocals and glistening melodies. 'Father' is an imitated song with the deep lyrics allowed plenty of room to make their mark as gentle bongos and strings company a soothing rhythm. Aspirated, smoky vocals again take centre stage on 'Lovely Lovely' which is a reminisce of a romantic tryst and 'Contradictions' then has a more breezy feel and sunny disposition. 'Seeweeyah' shuts down with a powerful monologue.

Review: Jim Black's Houseplant sees the progressive-jazz drummer continue to refine his signature style, a fusion of jazz and rock that's as quirky as it is inventive. While not a radical shift from his previous works, this 2009 release showcases Black's distinctive approach to drumming, blending complex rhythms with sly, punchy backbeats that keep the session lively. Backed by his longtime band Alas No Axis, Black delivers a sprightly set with guitarist Hilmar Jensson, whose polytonal riffs add texture, and saxophonist Chris Speed, who brings a smoother edge to the more intense moments. Tracks like 'Malomice' highlight the band's ability to shift seamlessly between acid-rock and jazz, with Speed's saxophone weaving off-kilter melodies over Black's precise, crashing grooves. The mood softens on introspective cuts like 'Elight,' where the musicians ease into more delicate, atmospheric territory. Bassist Skuli Sverrisson provides the glue, his limber playing driving the energy throughout. Review: The sixth studio album from US rockers Cage The Elephant arrives after a turbulent time for the band. Deaths of loved ones, a lead singer arrested then hospitalised, and the slow mental recovery from our collective free fall during the pandemic betray just how challenging recent years have been. The remarkable part is these experiences, and the resulting emotions, have been thoughtfully distilled into Neon Pill. A record that's just as much of a rollercoaster ride, we veer between the funk-laden 'Ball & Chain', the garage-y title track, gritty romanticism of 'Float Into the Sky', and rousing, lo-fi closer, 'Over Your Shoulder'. Scarcely stopping for breath, the ideas come thick, fast, and varied - leaving us feeling like we've been on an odyssey of psyche-blues-post-punk-indie. A combination that can only really sound like Cage the Elephant.

Review: Who doesn't like a freebie? Nice move from the Daughter of Cain label here (an imprint of Prescription Songs) they offer a free poster with this limited run of Ethel Cain's debut album. With Cain, real name Hayden Anhedonia, having kicked off 2025 with the release of her second album; her debut, which paved the way for a massive cult following that's her into a mainstream alt-pop figure, is earning renewed attention. Sonically, this is befitting to the Sad Girl Summer movement which became a craze on social media. Think Mitski, Lana Del Rey, Phoebe Bridgers, but with more of an alternative and shoegaze undercurrent. Lyrically, Anhedonia delves into her past, growing up in a staunchly religious family - and her most iconic line of any song on the album has to go to 'American Teenager': "God loves you/but not enough to save you".

Review: The cult-classic debut album from Florida-raised singer-songwriter and producer Hayden Silas Anhedonia, who goes by the stage name Ethel Cain. The album draws on her personal experiences, including growing up homeschooled in a Southern Baptist family. She channels that it into tender, balladic indie pop that's connected with millions. Anhedonia is reportedly no longer religious and so her lyrics are more of an exploration of those themes and hold an irreverence. In heartbreaking ethereal tones, reminiscent of Lana Del Rey, she sings: "God loves you / but not enough to save you", on 'American Teenager'. The album took four years for Anhedonia to make and she claims to have made nearly every inch of it herself. This painstaking attention to detail shows in the mixes, which feel like pop but are subtly avant-garde and make you feel in the company of a true artist.

Review: Domino Records embark on an ambitious reissues double-bill of John Cale's earliest solo records. Here - third to his debut record after his self-excision from the Velvet Underground, Vintage Violence (1970) (to which Cale was infamously disparaging in his later years, deriding his performance on the work as "masked" behind a disingenuous imperative to prove he could still write songs) and second to his Academy In Peril (1972) - comes his third and much better loved LP, Paris 1919. Released in 1973, Cale has regained ground here, still flexing a wonderful talent for songcraft, yet also an entirely new orchestral chamber pop direction, easily foiling the unflappable cool cat persona depicted on the front cover, and eschewing the dark experimentalism of his preceding album. Where it's not plush with string movements, Paris 1919 brims with softly-strung guitar arpeggiations and electric piano hooks, its placid easy listening approach much befitting of the Paris Peace Conference, and other related postwar drives to armistice, that bestruck the public imagination during the earliest post-war 20th Century.

Review: This is the second of three inventive and influential albums that John Cale released through Island Records in the mid-70s. The Velvet Underground founding member was in stellar company with Brian Eno, Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera and one of the most prolific studio session guitarists of all time, Chris Spedding, all appearing on the album. The album is stacked with bangers, but of note is the life-affirming and soulful 'Dirtyass Rock 'n' Roll; his cover of 'Heartbreak Hotel', which is one of the best covers ever recorded and 'I'm Not The Loving Kind'. The latter gained recognition most recently when the late, great Mark Lanegan covered it beautifully for his Imitations album. Cale will forever be a wellspring of inspiration.

Review: It's hard to feel 'meh' about John Cale. In fact, it's impossible. The Welsh musician, Velvet Underground alumni and composer has given us 18 studio albums, including June 2024's Poptical Illusion, and there's nary a misstep in the lot. His latest plays out like a warm bath full of dreamy optimism, a follow up to the highly collaborative affair, Mercy, here we see the super-talent adjust his focus and fly out alone to prove the point. And prove it he does. Across 12 weird and unarguably wonderful tracks, Cale manages to defy genres, flitting between chamber punk and beach pop, theatrical croon-dom and syrupy downtempo. While there are dark-er moods, 'Funkball The Brewster', for example, on the whole this is smile-inducing, if bat-shit crazy stuff, from start to finish.

Review: Glasgow indie pop sonic-photographers Camera Obscura have always been masters of subtlety and this sense of finesse only hears a bolstering on the new record Look To The East, Look To The West. After the sad loss of their former founding member and keyboardist Carey Lander in 2015, the group took the time out for a much-needed hiatus before reuniting for the recording of this personally redemptive full-length. Led by the soft, tambouring jangles of 'Big Love', the album's lead single, we're met with an elegiac but ultimately hopeful recollection, via its lovingly prodding lyrics ("it was a big love, she said, the kind of big love that made you easily led") and sonic resemblance of Waylon Jennings.

Review: Scottish indie-pop survivors Camera Obscura have been operative since the mid 1990s, though they've effectively been on hiatus for the last decade. Look To The East, Look To The West, then, is a comeback of sorts - though no doubt the Tracyanne Campbell-fronted outfit would no doubt play down this aspect of the story. They think it is their most well-crafted and 'sophisticated' set to date - a kind of distillation of the jangly, cheery and tuneful indie-pop sound they've always done well, with a wider palette of influences (note the lilting pedal steel on the superb title track, the twinkling piano lament of 'Sugar Almond' and the saucer-eyed dream pop of 'Denon'). We tend to agree; whether a comeback or not, it's a hugely enjoyable album that should appeal to dedicated fans and newcomers alike.

Review: Second time around for German new-wave and wayward synth-pop outfit Camouflage's 1993 album Bodega Bohemia - a set that was initially only released in Germany due to conflict with the band's record label. It saw them pivot away from the sound of their previous album and back towards synthesisers and drum machines, with the trio reportedly wanting to make it "as electronic as possible". There are hints of mid-80s goth and New Romantic, though the influence of the turn-of-the-90s indie-dance sound made famous by the likes of the Stone Roses and New Order is much greater. This anniversary edition also boasts two additional discs: one (CD2) showcasing radio edits, B-sides and remixes from the period, and another (CD3) comprising demos, live recordings and unheard instrumental takes.

Review: Originally released in 2009 and celebrating its 15th anniversary this year, Evisceration Plague would serve as the 11th full-length from Buffalo, New York (now Florida based) brutal death metal legends Cannibal Corpse. Following on from 2006's critically acclaimed Kill, the band promised themselves to endeavour to make each subsequent project even heavier, a feat they managed to accomplish by re-enlisting Hate Eternal guitarist Erik Rutan as producer (some years before he would ultimately join the group full-time). Review: Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band are the latest act to be featured in Warner's series of Now Playing greatest hits-style comps. Born Don Vliet, Captain Beefheart was a true innovator in modern music, boasting a four-and-a-half-octave vocal range, and fused free jazz, Delta blues, classical music and rock & roll with unique rhythms and surreal lyrics. Though he never achieved mainstream success, his influence permeated punk, new wave and post-rock and this album shows why, with tracks like 'I'm Gonna Booglarize You Baby' and 'Her Eyes Are a Blue Million Miles' showcasing his bolder moves, alongside the more introspective 'My Head Is My Only House When It Rains' and 'Clear Spot.' Vliet, a child prodigy in art, moved to the Mojave Desert in his teens, where he met Frank Zappa. They initially collaborated on a film project, but Vliet eventually formed the Magic Band. After several lineup changes, they released the seminal Trout Mask Replica in 1969. Beefheart's career spanned various experimental phases until he retired in 1982 to focus on painting, earning acclaim for his abstract outsider art.
