Review: On their second album Desperado, the Eagles went deep into the idea of the American Wild West. With their country twang, Glenn Frey and Don Henley's songs were already cowboy-friendly, but this album took the concept further. Released in 1973, it captures everything you love about the Eagles from shit-kickin' rock n' roll like 'Out of Control' facing off with sentimental classic 'Tequila Sunrise'. After all this time it's the title track which remains one of the band's most beloved songs - everything a lonesome man on the prairie needs to hear after a hard day and a hoedown.

Review: Genesis' 1976 album represents a pivotal moment for the band, blending intricate jazz/fusion elements with their signature progressive rock style. The SACD release highlights the nuanced interplay among members, delivering stunning clarity to Phil Collins' dynamic drumming and Mike Rutherford's sophisticated bass lines. Tracks like 'Dance on a Volcano' showcase the band's energy, with Steve Hackett's guitar evoking vivid imagery against Tony Banks' layered keyboards. 'Entangled' and 'Mad Man Moon' stand out for their delicate, introspective tones, featuring acoustic guitars and emotive vocals from Collins, whose voice brings a heartfelt authenticity to the material. The intricate use of mellotron, especially on 'Los Endos' and the latter half of 'Entangled,' adds a lush, choral atmosphere. 'Ripples' emerges as one of Genesis' finest moments, its nostalgic beauty underscored by shimmering 12-string guitars and majestic instrumental passages. Meanwhile, 'Squonk' delivers a rhythmic punch, marking a turning point where Collins proved his mettle as both drummer and vocalist. With its varied compositions and instrumental brilliance, the album bridges the theatrical style of earlier works with a more cohesive and music-centric approach. The SACD release ensures these performances resonate more vibrantly than ever, cementing its place as one of the band's definitive achievements.

Review: Status Quo's iconic 1977 album Live! sets sail once again with a special 8xCD super deluxe reissue on May 16, 2025, celebrating two of the band's most electrifying performances in Glasgow. Recorded over three nights at the Apollo Theatre in October 1976, the album first captured a selection of tracks from said shows; for their boogie-rock sound and high-energy stage presence, these Glasgow performances were pivotal in cementing Status Quo's reputation on the world stage, in their prime. The reissue offers the gigs again in full, remastering them from newly discovered 24-track tapes, guaranteeing superior sound quality. The set includes a 24-page illustrated booklet with new sleeve notes, rare photographs and memorabilia, shedding light on the impact of the shows and the making of the album.

'Supper's Ready,' stretches over 20 minutes, shifting effortlessly between prog grandeur and delicate folk. Review: Van Halen's 1984 remains a seminal record in the history of rock music, marking a significant pivot in both the band's sound and its broader influence on the genre. Released in a year crowded with iconic albums from heavyweights like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Bon Jovi, 1984 stood out with its innovative use of synthesisers, a bold move for a band traditionally known for its hard-hitting guitar-driven rock. This sonic shift, spearheaded by Eddie Van Halen's exploration of keyboards, made the album both controversial and groundbreaking, with 'Jump' becoming a defining anthem of the era. The album kicks off with the brief, synth-driven title track that transitions seamlessly into 'Jump,' a song that introduced a new layer of polish to Van Halen's sound without sacrificing the energy or fun that defined their earlier work. Despite initial resistance from die-hard fans, 'Jump' became the band's most commercially successful song, balancing Eddie's keyboard experimentation with David Lee Roth's larger-than-life vocals. Following 'Jump', the album dives back into more familiar territory with tracks like 'Panama' and 'Hot For Teacher', showcasing the signature blistering guitar riffs and infectious rhythms that put Van Halen on the map. 'Panama' is an explosive rocker, with crunching guitars and Roth's unmistakable charisma, while 'Hot For Teacher' opens with one of the most recognizable drum intros in rock history. The band's chemistry is on full display, combining wild guitar solos, booming bass lines, and energetic vocals. Deeper cuts like 'Top Jimmy' and 'Drop Dead Legs'' are often overshadowed by the big singles but still highlight the band's dynamic range. 'I'll Wait', with its atmospheric production and introspective tone, stands as one of the more unique entries in the Van Halen catalog, blending ghostly vocal effects with the band's pop sensibilities. Produced by Ted Templeman, 1984 strikes a delicate balance between the more polished sound of mainstream rock and the band's rough, raw origins. The album's commercial success, aided by MTV and the rise of music videos, cemented Van Halen's place in the pantheon of rock greats. Even 40 years after its release, 1984 sounds fresh, an enduring testament to Van Halen's ability to innovate without losing their core identity. Whether it's the flashy guitar solos, Roth's exuberant vocal performances, or the bold use of synthrs, 1984 captures a band at the peak of their powers, pushing boundaries while staying true to their rock 'n' roll spirit.

Review: Yes's 1972 masterpiece remains a standout in progressive rock and this new remaster elevates it to even greater heights. With Steven Wilson's meticulous work, the album shines in all its sonic glory, bringing out the intricate details of the band's performances. The original tracklisting, which includes the iconic 'Close to the Edge,' 'And You and I,' and 'Siberian Khatru,' is a showcase of brilliant musicianship and songwriting. Each member plays a crucial role, with Steve Howe's guitar work and Chris Squire's bass standing out, while Rick Wakeman's organ solos add grandeur. This album refines an already near-perfect classic.

Review: Genesis took a significant leap forward with the addition of Phil Collins and Steve Hackett to the lineup and this album showcases a perfect blend of bombastic keyboards, intricate melodies and imaginative storytelling. Opening with 'The Musical Box', a mini rock opera that fuses nursery rhyme influences with progressive rock grandeur, the album establishes itself as a classic. The heavy and menacing 'The Return of the Giant Hogweed' exemplifies the band's creative audacity, while 'For Absent Friends' offers a brief, gentle respite led by Collins' emotive vocals. 'Seven Stones' features one of the most iconic Mellotron solos, while 'The Fountain of Salmacis' presents a mythical tale with symphonic depth. 'Harold the Barrel' provides a brief, humorous interlude and 'Harlequin' offers a quaint but somewhat disposable moment. The record's strength lies in its balance of light and dark, with moments of beauty and power seamlessly intertwined. The album captures the band's transition from their early sound to a more ambitious, epic style, laying the groundwork for future masterpieces. It remains a cornerstone of progressive rock, showcasing Genesis at their imaginative best.

Review: Genesis' 1983 release begins with an ominous whisper, 'Mama', where Phil Collins channels something unnerving-part confession, part menace-set against sparse, mechanical drum programming. The track crescendos into a searing release, its layers of synths and percussion driving home a deep unease. If 'Mama' is the ghost in the machine, 'That's All' is the human touch: deceptively light, yet built on intricate layers of melody and rhythm that reveal the band's refined craftsmanship. The album balances pop accessibility with progressive roots. 'Second Home by the Sea', a two-part suite, showcases their knack for storytelling through instrumental drama, while 'Illegal Alien' mixes humour with commentary in a way that still provokes discussion. For fans of lush, introspective ballads, 'Taking It All Too Hard' offers a poignant standout moment. This reissue captures Genesis at a pivotal point, straddling their experimental past and chart-topping future. A must-have for fans exploring the evolution of a genre-defining band.

Mixes Of A Lost World (Deluxe Edition)
Cat: 758645 2. Rel: 13 Jun 25
Review: This expanded vinyl edition of mixes of The Cure's latest LP plays like a love letter to distortion, atmosphere and the spaces in between. Robert Smith i the Crawley-born architect of dream-pop dread i doesn't just sign off on the remixes; he threads them into something tactile and deeply referential. On wax, everything breathes more. Craven Faults' rework of 'I Can Never Say Goodbye' stretches across the grooves like a slow fog; you can almost hear the reverb decay. Trentemoller's version of 'And Nothing Is Forever' pulses with distant thunder, while Ex-Easter Island Head bring a kind of percussive drone minimalism that feels at once ancient and alien. The inclusion of post-rock outliers like Mogwai and 65daysofstatic leans into the format's cinematic sprawl i these are not just remixes but alternate timelines. Smith curates the artwork, adds handwritten notes, sketches, fragments of ephemera i each fold and crease of the tri-gatefold sleeve feels intentional. Even the sequencing feels weighted: Four Tet and Anja Schneider on one end, Twilight Sad and Moreno on the other. This isn't just a deluxe package i it's a monument. A showcase of how far The Cure's music can stretch, bend and re-form without losing that original ache.

Review: Abacab remains an album that pulses with the energy of the early 80s, yet it carries a weight of reflection that anchors it beyond its time. The opening track sets a brisk pace, its driving rhythm section cutting through the dense layers of synths with a sense of urgency. 'No Reply at All' stands as one of the album's high points, with a funk-infused groove that is both unexpected and irresistible. As the album progresses, 'Dodo' takes a darker turn, blending prog-rock sensibilities with electronic textures, showing the band's ability to evolve while retaining their distinctive voice. Throughout, there's a sense of experimentationia willingness to push boundaries, to step away from their previous sound while staying true to their roots. Abacab showcases a band in transition, seamlessly fusing their past with the future they were stepping into.

Review: Genesis's 1981 album captures a pivotal moment in the band's evolution, where their progressive roots blend seamlessly with a sleek, radio-friendly sound that defined their 1980s identity. This album showcases the trio's ability to experiment while crafting accessible and compelling tracks. From the dynamic interplay of sharp guitar riffs and smooth organ tones on the title track to the infectious horn-driven groove of 'No Reply at All', Genesis proves their mastery of melody and rhythm. Tony Banks' 'Me and Sarah Jane' evokes the band's earlier prog days with its intricate layers, while 'Keep It Dark' and 'Dodo/Lurker' explore mechanical rhythms and multi-part suites. Phil Collins' heartfelt 'Man on the Corner' pairs poignant lyrics with electronic percussion and Mike Rutherford's 'Like It or Not' transitions beautifully from ballad to bold declaration. Closing with 'Another Record', the album leaves listeners with a punchy, rhythmic finale. Reissued on 180-gram vinyl with gatefold packaging, this edition enhances the listening experience, presenting the music with warmth and clarity. A significant chapter in Genesis's storied career, this album remains a testament to their innovation and adaptability.

Review: Buffalo Springfield's second album hears a reissue through Analogue Productions US. In the words of AllMusic, this record saw a decentralising of Springfield's band, with a tacit sprawling out of instrumental and production duties by the members informing on this blues folk-tinged, early psychedelic rock magnum. The mood is quotidian but fantastical at the same time: "Every day's a killing time, sun comin' up outside, no matter what this time, Saturday's child stays home..." goes the idling line on 'Everydays', just before a searing distorto-guitar note interrupts and cuts across an otherwise picturesque scene. Smooth to the point of cosmic, the record also benefits from orchestral Americana romances, which hardly signify the to come later: there's no way the idyllic 'Expecting To Fly' could predict the endless twangoffs of 'Hung Upside' for a second.

Review: A four sided selection of remixes of the goth kingpins' widely acclaimed and long awaited latest album Songs of a Lost World. From the moment Paul Oakenfold's 'I Can Never Say Goodbye' rework opens proceedings i lush strings, half-submerged vocals, and a cinematic pace i it's clear that curation, not just contribution, has shaped the form. Orbital turn 'Endsong' into a glistening spiral of sequencers and tension, while Sally C's raw house take on 'A Fragile Thing' ups the pulse without disturbing the gloom. Smith i still unmistakably the same outsider from Crawley, West Sussex i guides things with restraint, letting the space speak louder than the noise. Four Tet's version of 'Alone' closes the first disc like a forgotten lullaby, cracked and glinting. You don't get every remix i the more textural, post-rock turns are gone i but you do get a sharp cross-section that keeps faith with both atmosphere and momentum. It's the kind of record that feels designed for the night: not to lift it, exactly, but to sink into it willingly, track by track.

Proggy guitars draw out the me option and make it a perfect end of the night tune to send people home teary-eyed but euphoric.

Review: This album was a bold statement in 1985, marking this band leaders transition from frontman of The Police to a solo artist with a distinct musical vision. Now, 40 years later, this anniversary reissue on translucent aqua vinyl reaffirms the album's timeless appeal while honoring the format that first delivered its sonic richness. Stepping away from his former band's signature reggae-tainted sound, Sting embraced jazz influences, enlisting an exceptional lineup of musicians including Branford Marsalis and Omar Hakim. This fusion of pop, rock and jazz gave the album a sophisticated edge, evident in hits like the anthemic 'If You Love Somebody Set Them Free' and the brooding 'Fortress Around Your Heart'. 'Love Is the Seventh Wave' brought a playful, reggae-infused optimism, while 'Russians' showed Sting's political awareness, its Cold War-era message remaining hauntingly relevant. Beyond the hits, the album's depth shines in tracks like 'Moon Over Bourbon Street', a moody, jazz-inspired ballad that demonstrates his knack for storytelling. The reissue's high-quality pressing enhances the album's warmth and clarity, ensuring its intricate arrangements and lyrical poignancy resonate anew. More than a debut, The Dream of the Blue Turtles was a reinventionione that proved Sting's artistry could flourish beyond the confines of a band. This 40th-anniversary edition is both a celebration and a reminder of an artist daring to evolve, crafting music that still moves you four decades later.

Review: The latest George Harrison reissuing flurry from BMG flutters forth again, this time focusing on Let It Roll, a brief collection recorded by the "shy Beatle" well into his solo career. Released the day Harrison received his star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, the compilation pulls from his Apple and Dark Horse years but omits six of his studio albums entirely. Over chart majors like 'My Sweet Lord', 'Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth)', and 'Got My Mind Set On You', alongside three live recordings from the landmark Concert for Bangladesh, this one began as a full-career summary but nonetheless - necessarily - lacked material from Wonderwall Music, Thirty Three & 1/3, and the Traveling Wilburys, resolutely raising eyebrows among fans.

Tracks II: The Lost Albums
Cat: 194399 50151. Rel: 27 Jun 25
Review: Springsteen's place in music history is undeniable i a legendary figure whose songwriting has captured the heart, hope and heartbreak of American life for over five decades. With Tracks II: The Lost Albums, Springsteen opens the vault once again, offering fans an extraordinary glimpse into seven unreleased albums (80 tracks in total) spanning from the mid-70s to the 2000s. Rather than a simple outtakes collection, Tracks II feels like discovering entire new chapters of the Springsteen story. Across the compilation, you hear an artist constantly evolving i from the dusty romanticism of The Ties That Bind sessions to the raw urgency of the Born in the U.S.A. era demos. Songs like 'American Beauty' and 'Party Lights' showcase Springsteen's knack for creating melodies that feel instantly familiar yet deeply personal. The variety across the nine albums is striking. There are intimate acoustic sketches, full-throttle E Street Band anthems and brooding late-night confessionals. The production quality is strong throughout, preserving the raw spirit of the recordings while giving them a polished shine. Springsteen's voice i at turns weathered, fiery, tender i remains the heart of the collection. Lyrically, the themes of working-class dreams, lost love, redemption and perseverance remain constants, binding this sprawling set together. Tracks II isn't just for diehards; it's an example to Springsteen's restless creativity and enduring spirit. A gift to fans and a reminder of why his music remains timeless.

Review: Steely Dan's cynical 1976 opus passes go once again, rounding off Universal's reissue campaign of the band's revered 1972-1980 catalogue. Known for its slick jazz-rock fusion and caustic topicality, the album houses fan favourites like the acid-laced 'Kid Charlemagne' and the tightly wound funk of 'The Fez'. The sardonic 'Haitian Divorce' became an unexpected UK top 20 hit; it was the only time the group ever cracked that territory's singles chart. Long hailed as one of the group's darkest and densest records, The Royal Scam signalled a transition toward the meticulous studio sheen that would define Aja the following year.

Review: The Sweet's contribution to the glam rock canon would find itself less popularly cherished than that of their coevals in Slade, Roxy Music and David Bowie, but that doesn't stop their said many hits from utterly reshaping the ridgeline of British pop rock history. Sweet evolved from bubblegum pop beginnings into one of the defining forces of 70s glam rock. Their early chart success kicked off in 1971 with 'Funny, Funny', made in collaboration with hit-making duo Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. But this new compilation reissue, Platinum Rare 1, does yet more than just fixate on the hits, familiarising us even further intimately with the cat-suited four-piece in their nascency, selecting from longest-surviving member and guitarist Andy Scott's private archive, and with alternate takes, mixes and unreleased tracks recorded by the original lineup.

Review: Robert Smith has always treated remixing less like revision, more like ritual i a habit that's followed him since his days in Crawley, West Sussex and then surfacing officially on the first Cure remix album, 1990's Mixed Up. This triple-disc release of reworkings from the band's latest LP Songs of a Lost World feels assembled with obsessive care, mapping out every possible mood lurking beneath the surface. There are club-ready flips, yes i Sally C, Danny Briottet and Gregor Tresher all push the rhythm forward i but they sit beside glacial pieces that feel more like haunted sketches than reworks. Mura Masa's take on 'All I Ever Am' is disintegrated almost beyond recognition, its vocal a flickering memory. Mogwai's 'Endsong' feels like the end of the world in slow motion. Even Chino Moreno turns in something striking i 'WarSong' morphs into a sludgy howl with heat-warped edges. But it's the sequencing that surprises: these aren't bolted together, but grouped in arcs, as though Smith were arranging the bones of an old idea into something still alive. Four Tet's version of 'Alone' is a high point i deeply textured but featherlight. Like all The Cure's output, what really matters is the feeling of being drawn somewhere, and Smith's hand never letting go.

Review: More than four decades after he first appeared in smudged eyeliner and a mop of jet-black hair, Robert Smith is still finding new ways to pull his music apart and stitch it back together. This new remix collection i assembled and curated by Smith himself i feels less like a victory lap and more like a restless dissection of a legacy he's still actively shaping. The collaborators here are hardly incidental: Four Tet, Orbital, Ame, Chino Moreno, Mura Masa, Trentemoller, Mogwai. It reads like a list built by someone still hungrily tuned into the present, not stuck in the past. And true to form, the results are all over the place i a feature, not a flaw. Some tracks lean into grandeur: Paul Oakenfold's take on 'I Can Never Say Goodbye' opens with all the sweeping melodrama you'd expect, while Daybreakers stretch 'WarSong' into widescreen synthwork. Elsewhere, Shanti Celeste and Ex-Easter Island Head bring a strange intimacy to 'Alone', teasing out its ache with a different kind of spaciousness. At times, you wonder if Smith enjoys seeing how far his work can be bent before it breaks. But it never does i even filtered through others' hands, his sense of tension, drama and deep emotional unease holds everything together.

Review: Now reissued on vinyl, this 1999 album from veteran solo crooner and former Roxy Music frontman sees him in full command of his cabaret croon and vintage sensibilities, diving headlong into a collection of pop standards from the 1930s and 40s. Known for reshaping rock and pop songs in his own image, Ferry here takes a more classical routeinot to reinvent, but to evoke, with renditions rendered with delicate, period-authentic arrangements: intimate string sections, lilting piano and subdued brass, as Ferry's famously tremulous voice drifts like perfume through the arrangements. He approaches standards like 'Lover Come Back To Me', 'I'm In The Mood For Love,' and 'You Do Something To Me' with characterstic effortlessness, and rather than sounding like a museum piece, As Time Goes By feels lived-in and cinematic. A smooth, sepia-toned reverie.

Review: For the first time in over five decades, Detroit-born shock rock pioneer Alice Cooper reunites with his original band i and the result is as gloriously over-the-top as you'd hope. This new release drips with classic 70s grit: snarling guitars, theatrical menace and enough tongue-in-cheek horror to fill a Hammer box set. But beneath the spectacle is something surprisingly heartfelt i a celebration of enduring friendship, shared chaos and the music that made them. Tracks like 'Black Mamba' and 'Wild Ones' come out swinging, all swaggering riffs and venomous hooks, while 'See You on the Other Side' slows the pace with eerie, almost tender melodies. There's even a posthumous appearance from Glen Buxton, stitched in from unreleased recordings and handled with just the right amount of reverence and mischief. That balance i between chaos and craft, humour and heart i is what makes this reunion click. It's a record that doesn't try to modernise or apologise. Instead, it doubles down on what made the band great to begin with: theatrics, danger, and undeniable chemistry. For fans of the original lineup, or anyone with a love for twisted rock history, it's an absolute gift i unpolished, undead, and still kicking hard.

Review: Earth's live performance at KOKO in 2016 captures the Olympia-formed experimental drone crew's evolving sound in its most immersive form. The trioiDylan Carlson, Jodie Cox and Adrienne Davisioffers a slow-burn journey through layers of doom, drone and minimalist textures that feel as weighty as they do precise. The set begins with a familiar depth, the reverberating basslines and crushing guitar tones building a space of deliberate tension. Tracks like 'Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull' unfurl with a vast and spatial quality, while 'Even Hell Has Its Heroes' crawls along in thick, oppressive layers. What's striking is the restraint: Earth never rushes; each note, each pause, is deliberate, serving as a meditation on the slow, heavy force of sound. The minimalist approach feels almost tactile in its quiet moments, as if the silence itself is as profound as the noise. This live offering underlines their mastery of creating music that moves beyond noise, into a deeper exploration of space, sound, and feeling.

Review: After the relative commercial un-success of their debut Whole Oats, Hall & Oates relocated to the Big Apple to record 1973's Abandoned Luncheonette, marking the start of their New York chapter, which perhaps artistically expressed their own debutant dismay. Produced by Arif Mardin, and in a rightly disgruntled fashion, the duo sought to distance themselves from commercial formulae, honing a unique sound that would later prove non-fungible. Keeping close to the pair's American roots, Mardin played a crucial role, and under his guidance, H&O would call the production process a vital learning experience. The second side of the record is notable for its guitarist Chris Bond's Beatles-inspired ideas, which he would later express as a regretful choice, as it deviated substantially from H&O's vision. But this is an overall "magical" record, as expressed by the duo themselves.

Review: Keeping to a sadomasochistic touring schedule - juggling the dates of which with album releases between 1974 and 1977 - Bad Company were in sore need of a break following the completion of their fourth LP, Burnin' Sky. After two years, they made their return on March 17, 1979, with their fifth studio album Desolation Angels, named after the Jack Kerouac beatnik classic of the same name. A 10-track collection of blues-influenced rock was met with strong chart performance, proving that even amid the rise of punk and new wave, Bad Company's signature sound still had significant appeal. The album's standout track, 'Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy', became a gold-selling single, while tracks like 'Gone, Gone, Gone', 'Lonely for Your Love' and 'She Brings Me Love' emboldened the vocal prowess of lead larynx Paul Rodgers. The album sports a relatively polished production sheen compared to Burnin' Sky, suggesting renewal after disenchantment.

Review: Rod Stewart's voice has always sounded like it's just crawled out of a Soho bar fight - gravelly, charming and faintly ridiculous. But somehow, it still gets you. This new compilation, spanning everything from his 70s bar-room soul to recent swing experiments, is a reminder of just how strange and compelling his career has been. Few singers could convincingly move from 'Maggie May' to 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?' to 'Rhythm of My Heart' without seeming like a novelty act. Fewer still could make it all hang together with any sense of emotional truth. Born in London and once a failed footballer, Stewart turned rascal energy into stadium-filling charisma. The early material - with Python Lee Jackson, with the Faces, or solo - still feels beautifully tossed-off, full of unfiltered ache. Later tracks lean into gloss and schmaltz, sometimes to great effect and sometimes less so. But taken as a whole, this is a portrait of a singer who never quite gave up on the idea that pop music could be both daft and devastating. It's not cool, and it's not trying to be. That's the charm. If you're not moved by something here, you're either too young or trying far too hard.

Review: There's not many musicians who embody the sound of American rock 'n' roll as much as Bob Seger does. From the brooding introspection of 'Turn the Page' to the anthemic uplift of 'Like a Rock', this package of hits traverses decades of deeply resonant, unpretentious storytelling set to thundering drums and searing guitar. This greatest hits makes a powerful return on vinyl, pressed impeccably and sounding every bit as raw and soulful as the legacy it encapsulates. What sets Seger apart is his ability to merge working-class grit with melodic muscle. 'Night Moves' remains one of rock's most poignant coming-of-age narratives, while 'Against the Wind' offers quiet rebellion with a wistful heart. Even lighter tracks like 'Old Time Rock and Roll' bristle with conviction and energy, showing Seger's deep reverence for the roots of the genre. Comparisons to Springsteen and Van Morrison are natural, but while Seger's characters and cadences echo theirs, his brand of rustbelt rock is its own breed: proud, grounded and radiantly human. Back on vinyl and sounding terrific with its analogue warmth, it's quikcly clear why this compilation became the best-selling catalogue album of its decade.

Review: This new collection from New Jersey's Bruce Springsteen gathers 20 previously unreleased tracks, many taken from full albums that never saw the light of day i until now. Spanning 35 years of creative offshoots, false starts and private experiments, it's a rare insight into the quieter corners of one of America's most mythic songwriters. But this isn't just offcut archaeology; it's a powerful standalone listen. From the dusty pulse of the 'LA Garage Sessions '83' to the synthetic haze of the 'Streets of Philadelphia Sessions', these recordings trace Springsteen's musical drift between lo-fi intimacy, widescreen rock and unexpected stylistic detours. 'Somewhere North of Nashville' aches with country soul, pedal steel drifting like cigarette smoke. 'Inyo' is a richly detailed border tale, while 'Twilight Hours' goes full orchestral noir i all shadows and moonlight. 'Perfect World' brings it back to E Street territory, complete with rousing guitars and that familiar sense of hope under pressure. There's a looseness here that feels newly revealing, and the warmth of Springsteen's personal introduction only adds to its charm. It's not a victory lap i more a letter from the vaults, full of missed chances and alternate realities. A real gift for fans.

Review: Between 1969 and 1970, Elton John recorded a wide range of cover versions as part of his early career as a session musician and budget label contributor, and this new Iceni compilation tracks some of the very best of that era. Working frequently with producer Paul Brooks and arranger Zack Laurence, he lent his vocals to low-cost soundalike records covering contemporary hits. Be these Beatles or Rolling Stones redos, or personal takes on Simon & Garfunkel through Creedence Clearwater Revival, none were widely credited at the time, and yet they reveal John's vocal adaptability and emerging style, revealing a familiarly trodden path for many a musical mega-greats: as did Johnny Cash all the way through to Justin Bieber, you can make a sure start with covers.

Welcome To My Nightmare

Review: 1975 marked a defining moment in the Alice Cooper character arc, with the release of Welcome to My Nightmare, a concept album reiterating the Kiss member's theatricality, storytelling skills, and knack for all things phantasmagoric. From 'Welcome to My Nightmare', listeners are plunged into a dark fantastical nether-realm, with added orchestration lending Cooper's craft a Burtonesque grim like never before. In collaboration with longtime producer Bob Ezrin, Cooper impelled many memorable spirits here, naturally forming the sonic backbone of the eponymous, accompanying concert film (1975) produced by David Winter. The album's breakout hit, 'Only Women Bleed', reached the Top 5 and played a major role in propelling Welcome to My Nightmare to multi-platinum status.

Review: The fourth studio release from US country rock giants Crosby, Stills & Nash, released in 1982, marked a period of reflection and renewal for the American trio, shaped by their diverse backgrounds: David Crosby's West Coast roots, Stephen Stills' Texan upbringing and Graham Nash's British perspective. Their signature harmonies and seasoned craftsmanship come through with the project largely built from prior recordings between Stills and Nash in 1980 and 1981. What began as a duo effort was ultimately enhanced by Crosby's return that gave the tracks a fresh dynamic. The songs tap into familiar folk rock territory, but the album's highlights, like 'Wasted on the Way' (Nash reflecting on the consequences of personal squabbles) and 'Southern Cross' (Stills' reinterpretation of a Curtis brothers' track), explore the bittersweet nature of their turbulent past. Crosby's own contributionsiespecially 'Delta' and 'Might As Well Have a Good Time'iadd an intimate touch, weaving his signature harmonies with Stills and Nash's. With collaborators like Mike Finnigan and Art Garfunkel, the record embodies a sense of rebirth, while also introducing the band to the music video era with the MTV-friendly 'Southern Cross'. As they reckon with their past, the release captures their journey towards renewal, reaffirming their legacy while embracing change.

Review: The Doobie Brothers make a triumphant return with a revitalised lineup, uniting founding members Patrick Simmons, Tom Johnston, John McFee and Michael McDonald for their latest release. With a legacy built on infectious harmonies, impeccable musicianship and a genre-blending approach, the band has long been a staple in American rock and pop. Their newest project, produced by John Shanks, reflects both their storied past and evolving present. The album touches on personal themes of growth, recovery and a deepening understanding of life's essential truths, each track showcasing the band's uncanny ability to weave Americana, rock and soul into an expansive yet cohesive sound, while collaborationsiincluding a stirring appearance from Mavis Staplesiadd emotional depth. Tracks like 'Angels & Mercy' and 'Learn To Let Go' embrace themes of growth and recovery, while the title track, featuring Staples, offers a sense of hope and unity. As ever, the Doobies navigate complex emotions with timeless ease, proving that their distinct blend of optimism and introspection still resonates deeply, even after decades of musical evolution.

Review: Aimee Mann's 2002 album Lost In Space marked a creative peak in her post-major label years, coming as an indie, introspective, finely wrought collection released through her very own SuperEgo imprint. Understated but lyrically incisive, Mann intones themes of isolation, solastalgia, and emotional survival, with standouts like 'This Is How It Goes', 'Today's The Day' and 'Pavlov's Bell' leading to in-universe performances in various film and TV media such as Buffy The Vampire Slayer and the J-Lo starring Enough. This 2025 remaster comes now comes at a timely point, coinciding with a US anniversary tour and renewed attention on one of Mann's most resonant works.

Review: Continuing the journey on from her first two albums, Mangekyo and Mikko, Yoshiko Sai deepened the surreal, spiritual exploration first introduced in her earlier work on this, her third LP, when it arrived in 1977. Once again collaborating with arranger Yuji Ohno, she crafts an eerie, introspective atmosphere that blends poetic imagery with hauntingly beautiful music. At just 24, the Japanese artist was already an accomplished poet, painter, and singer, with this release showcasing her ability to conjure vivid, dream-like landscapes. Tracks like 'Gitano' and 'Alhambra No Aoi Bin' feature delicate arrangements that swirl around Sai's ethereal vocals, evoking a world of mystery and intrigue. The music moves through a range of emotions, from the quiet contemplation in 'Umi No Chinmoku' to the emotional depth of 'Taiji No Yume,' reflecting her spiritual journey. This reissue is the perfect showcase for her unique blend of folk, art and poetry, offering an experience that's both introspective and sonically rich.

Review: Long coveted by collectors and now available internationally for the first time, Yoshiko Sai's 1975 album Mangekyou finds the Japanese singer-songwriter at the height of her powers. Produced by the legendary Yuji Ohno, known for his work across jazz and film scores, the album weaves a dense tapestry of lush arrangements and vibrant textures. Ohno's instrumental backdropsifrom funky jazz infusions to breezy, cinematic soundscapesiallow Sai's crystal-clear voice to take centre stage, moving seamlessly between ethereal folk, dramatic chanson, and soft psych. Tracks like 'Yoru No Sei' and 'Oumagatoki' embody a surreal, haunting quality, as Sai's voice drifts through verses like a ghostly narrator, while the backing shifts between lighthearted jazz and wistful strings. The album's variety ensures that every track offers something new, whether it's the melancholy depth of 'Akai Hana' or the playfully strange 'Eidore Shibai'. Mangekyou feels simultaneously timeless and ahead of its time, a work that exists between genres, places, and moods. The arrangements feel light on their feet but heavy with emotion. Long buried in obscurity, this reissue frames Sai's vision not as esoterica, but as quietly revelatory.

Review: Talisman were a Swedish metal band founded in 1989 by bassist Marcel Jacob, whose charismatic core formed the basis of a melodic, urgent sound. Beset by tragedies in the late noughts - Jacob's health issues and suicide, and the band's eventual split - their various LPs have garnered much credo over the years and especially posthumously to Jacob's death. Genesis and Five Out Of Five all are the fan favourites, but it's their debut self-titled record from 1989 which cut an early mustard, with the arresting lead single 'I'll Be Waiting' wrenching the attentions of hard rock fans worldwide away, god forbid, from lesser acts. What's more, this anniversary edition from original pressers Sunhill includes two previously unreleased instrumental tracks, further marking out the anniversary brilliance of a tragic act.

A key figure in Japan's folk and psychedelic scenes, Sai's mixture of cantastoria (story-singing) and ethereal instrumentation have infatuated listeners for decades. Mikkou explores themes of stowaways and distant travels, immersing the listener in an exotic, Silk Road-inspired fantasy; we tread an exotic trade route, changing hands through sleepless, arid nights of longing vocals and darkened funk (just take in those drum unisons on 'Haru', setting a precedent for impeccable productions throughout).

Review: Keith Roth's first solo outing, recorded after decades fronting Frankenstein 3000 and more recently joining The Dictators, plays like a dense tour through the past 50 years of American rock while still nodding to the present. Born in the Bronx and raised in New Jersey, Roth's deep roots in the scene come through clearlyihis radio-hardened rasp moves from bruised glam on 'She Says Good Morning' to driving alt-rock on 'Go Away', while 'What It Means' and 'Children of Men' lean into a bleaker, grunge-adjacent palette. 'Cosmic Scene' and 'Strawman' benefit from features by Albert Bouchard and Ross the Boss, adding a smoky supergroup sheen. 'I Don't Feel Like Thinking Today!' sets the tone with defiant slacker energy, while closer 'I'll Get By' opens out into a kind of worn optimism. It's scuffed and emotionally raw, but grounded by Roth's unwavering voice and instinct for melodyiproof that, even after decades on the airwaves, he still has something new to say.

Review: This 2017 remaster revisits Paul McCartney's 1989 return to critical favour i a release that saw the UK artist bridging new studio technology with classic songwriting craft. Working with Elvis Costello on several co-writes, and producers including Trevor Horn, Mitchell Froom and Steve Lipson, the record pulls in tight arrangements, layered instrumentation and a refreshed lyrical sharpness. Tracks like 'My Brave Face' and 'This One' pair bounce and brightness with detailed melodic phrasing, while deeper cuts like 'Don't Be Careless Love' and 'That Day Is Done' show a darker, more reflective register. The band lineup features long-time collaborators including Hamish Stuart, Robbie McIntosh and Chris Whitten, laying down solid, versatile performances across brass-led pop, mid-tempo ballads and soft rock with orchestral touches. It's a reissue that doesn't add much new material, but the pressing is clean and the Japanese-translated lyric booklet adds an archival touch. A sharply focused, musically rich snapshot of McCartney reasserting himself in the late 80s, with arrangements that still hold shape and detail decades on.

Review: Bruce Springsteen has been sitting on these recordings for yearsiwhole records, not sketchesisome finished, some forgotten. Now they finally surface, spanning 1983 to 2018, and offer a different kind of self-portrait: one less polished and more exploratory. The earliest material finds him navigating a path between the haunted quiet of 'Nebraska' and the radio gloss of 'Born in the USA'. Later sessions toy with drum loops, synth beds and orchestral swells. One batch plays like the soundtrack to a film that never existed; another leans into pedal steel and modest country sketches. There are borderland narratives, noir-ish ballads, E Street-style anthems. That New Jersey gritithat plainspoken clarity he's carried since the boardwalk daysiruns through even the softest tracks. He says he made this music to please himself and close friends, and you hear that freedom in its variety: some songs feel raw and just-found, others fully formed. There's no tidy arc, but that's part of its charm. Across seven discs and 82 songs, what emerges isn't a legacy project but something quieter: a window into how a working musician keeps working. You don't come away with answersionly a better sense of how far Springsteen will follow a song just to see where it leads.
