This new EP, Be Honest, is just that from long-time friends Lipelis and Arsenii, who are based in Belgrade and New York but seek inspiration in the New York sounds of the 80s and hook up with Gayana for some woozy and lovelorn vocal additions. 'Be Honest' is a dubbed out and swaggering deep disco groove that comes as long, dub and cappella versions on the A-side. The 12" dance mix brings some superb house drums into the picture and the Dubplate VIP is a fresh jungle rhythm. This is an EP with something for all.

Review: 10000 Lions Sound System brings some serious heat to their final release of 2024. It's a various artists affair with four artists offering up one heavyweight tune each. Spectacular's 'Big Bold & Brave' opens up with raw, guttural vocals over mid-tempo digi-dub rhythms. Bulby Yorke's 'Big, Bold Dub' stirs it back to a more low-end heavy roller but the bright melodies remain. Reemah's 'Run Dem Down; adds some nice female vocal soul next to big horns and raw percussion before a final dub again pairs things back to the rich basslines.

Review: Japanese artist Sawako returns to 12K with her first new release on the label since 2008's Bitter Sweet (12k1047). Sawako's sound, fragile and amorphous, may be made up of digital elements but takes on a humble, human sound here. Here she collapses eight years of memories and recordings into layers of sound intended to "open the body to the celestial world". Using generative compositional methods she recorded fragments of melodies on days of full moons, new moons, planetary conjunctions and around other notable events happening in the skies. She references orbits, sound waves and light, with suitably dream like results.

Review: Giuseppe Ielasi is back following his 2020 release Five Wooden Frames. There he returned to the guitar exploring shifting and modulating loops and the interplay of tuning and drifting to create five stark yet ethereal pieces. On The Prospect, Ielasi sticks to solo guitar but this time in a much more pure form. Each of the two pieces consists of parallel electric guitar lines recorded simply through a tube amplifier free of studio tricks or heavy editing. Like much music written over the past few years The Prospect is reflective and personal. Created during a time of tragic family loss there is clear melancholy in the stark arrangements where spaces between notes become the sounds of searching. Ielasi's haunting guitar brings us along to a new phase in his life that is as unknown to us as it is to him.

Now back on Taylor Deupree's experimental label, he fully immerses himself in the ambient world he previously considered only a side project. His aim is to heal himself through music and this record has six movements, each of which is based around his use of a 70s portable reel-to-reel tape recorder known as the UHER 4200. It makes for a widescreen and mesmeric work that stretches out in all directions around you with glistening melodies and slowly shifting energies that truly uplift.

Review: RBCHMBRS pushes his MPC - if that is the tool he used for this - to the max with a heavy mix of ramshackle loops, samples, busted drums and wonky rhythms on this great new EP for 1432 R US. It is steeped in hip-hop style for the way the grooves are so loosely assembled, but with a more rooted four-four house vibe. 'OD' is a deep and dusty opener for the back room, 'Eloise' brings hi tek funk and intense soul with Motor City overtones and 'Toe The Line' is a humid deep house cut that Theo Parrish or Moodymann might admire. 'Take Me' rounds out with twanging bass riffs and smeared chords that ooze heartfelt warmth.

Review: Astonishingly, 2020 marks 20 years since a group of Newport lads got together to form one of UK hip-hop's most unique rap crews, Goldie Lookin' Chain. To celebrate this significant anniversary, the Welsh collective has recorded a brand-new album, the hilariously titled Original Pyrite Material, and offered it up on glistening gold-coloured vinyl. It's an enjoyable romp all told, with the crew spitting largely laugh-out-loud rhymes - as has become their trademark - after Rhys-produced beats that offer a suitably lo-fi take on the squelchy, synth-heavy sounds of G-funk. Sure, there's nothing particularly groundbreaking here - by now we should all know what to expect from GLC - but it is hugely entertaining and arguably one of their strongest albums for years.
