Imprints 014
Cat: IMP 014. Rel: 30 May 18
100Hz - "Kinetic Wasp" (7:06)
Charonne - "Vice City" (5:27)
Cobert - "Spaceghetto" (5:55)
Charonne - "Formule Stardust" (6:17)
Review: Domenico Rosa and Riccardo's Imprints label has regularly delivered the goods since making its debut back in 2013. Predictably, this multi-artist affair is also rather impressive. French twosome Charonne is arguably the star of the show, delivering two tidy tracks: the bouncy and far-sighted "Vice City", where '80s synth-funk style motifs and acid-funk electronics ride a bustling groove, and the similarly-inclined, elastic tech-house-funk of "Formule Stardust". Elsewhere, turn-of-the-90s survivor 100Hz delivers a fine chunk of woozy deep house/funky techno fusion and Cobert delivers some spacey and chunky, mid-set tech-house. In other words, all four tracks are playable and worthy of your attention.

Damon Lamar - "Rising Sun" (7:57)
Claro Intelecto - "Signifier" (6:19)
Lowtec - "Dat America" (6:48)
Review: Styrax's alphabetized Specials series reaches its fourth volume (or Styrax I / Styrax J to use the correct parlance) with four typically sumptuous examples of archival house. 154's delightfully fuzzy "Daze" opens proceedings, which will cause much misty eyed reminiscing for anyone who indulged in the 2004 Delsin released album Strike it first appeared on. Alongside it, Damon Lamar's luxuriously paced "Rising Sun" is borrowed from Tetrode Music, its intoxicating swirls of kaleidoscopic textures every bit as potent as when it first surfaced. The flipside tracks are naturally in a similar vein with some 2003 bounciness from Claro Intelecto complemented by "Dat America", Lowtec's 1999 jam for the Playhouse imprint.

Acid Arab Collections EP 03
Acid Arab - "Zahr"
Gilbr Beesan Rum - "A Song For Anna"
Society Of Silence - "Baghdad"
An I & Capablanca - "Farsi Farce"
Review: To date, the Acid Arab Collections EPs and CD - compiled by the Paris-based producers behind the concept, Guido Minisky and Herve Carvalho (who DJ/produce under the Acid Arab alias) - have been little less than stunning. This third vinyl-only EP is of a similar standard. As usual, there's a strong focus on house and techno, with Middle Eastern instrumentation, vocals and samples atop. Highlights include the raw, heavy pump of Society of Silence's deliciously distorted "Baghdad", the spiraling, Brown Album-era Oribital style intoxication of An-I & Capablancas "Farsi Farce", and the ghostly horns and humid pulse of Gilb'r Beesan Rum's "A Song For Anna".

Amir Alexander - "Cypher"
Chris Mitchell - "213 NI"
DJ Spider - "New World Resistance"
Dakini9 - "Rollercoaster To Nowhere"
Review: Volume four of the Vanguard Sound series from Anunnaki Cartel label sees Amir Alexander and Chris Mitchell once again open the invitation to the East Coast house innovators. This time it's Plan B pair DJ Spider and Dakini9 who line up alongside the label founders with Amir Alexander setting a rough and rugged tone on opening track "Cypher". Rasping kicks and a killer bouncing analogue bassline drive the track forwards as Alexander gradually weaves in a searing synth tone which increases with smudged incandescence until a vocal sample offers some brief politically tinged respite before the synth tone kicks back in. Mitchell is in equally bullish mood on "213 NL" a straight up drum track that ratchets up into full blow acid filled psychedelia as the final third hones into view. On the Plan B side, Spider drops one of his trademark lurching rhythms, with skittering drums traversing the gritty lower frequencies of "New World Resistance" which is filled with the sort of vocal samples that justifies the title. "Rollercoaster To Nowhere" from Dakini9 is just as impressive, retaining the murky mood yet driven by it's own almost drunken percussive swagger.

Review: End of Level Boss Records is a joint project from Tusk and Cyclonix celebrating the world of video game technostalgia through electronic music. End Of Level Boss 1 Ganondorf. Ganondorf is the humanoid form of Ganon, the ultimate embodiment of evil and hatred, the nemesis of Link, and the final boss in many of the Legend of Zelda games. Ganondorf is a formidable sorcerer and a shapeshifter. His hatred is so intense that he can survive even the total obliteration of his body and remain conscious. An ultimate bad ass.

Mark Archer - "We Jack The House"
Ben Pest - "Schedule Acid"
Posthuman - "Don't Rush"
Chevron - "Vishnu 303"
Review: Drum machines, synths and sequencers are alive and kicking on this various artist EP from, Posthuman's Balkan Vinyl label which features Horror Boogie's Ben Pest and Planet Mu artist Chevron. Mark Archer, a name familiar to Balkan Vinyl, opens the EP with an electrified piece of four-to-the-floor techno funk, while Ben Pest boils down the instrumentation in "Scheduled Acid" for a track that sounds like a cooler version of Mylo's "Muscle Car". Posthuman takes the EP into spacey, Detroit, 909 techno territory with "Don't Rush", while Chevron powers up his 303 to supply a track as cheeky and acidic as what Killekill's Affie Yusuf can muster.

Form Of Change
A Mental Image
Review: Charles Noel has been enjoying a resurgence of late, with his early explorations as Archetype resurfacing on a number of reissue labels. Future Primitive have tapped Noel up for two cuts that typify his left-of-centre approach, leading in with the sharp-edged beat excursion "Form Of Change" that will appeal to all lovers of reduced, off-kilter rhythm workouts. "A Mental Image" adopts a softer stance, laying out a bed of silken pads and errant tweaks that tap into the head-tripping mood of vintage techno while maintaining the future-minded thrust that makes true machine music timeless, whichever era it was crafted in.

Audio Injection - "Charge"
Dax J - "From The Grave"
Cleric - "Natural Process A"
Franco Gonzalez - "Submarine"
Review: Emerging from nowhere earlier this year, the LDN WHT label made quite the impression with their inaugural release incorporating full on productions from Bleaching Agent, Viktoria Rebekah, Krill Music's Espen Lauritzen and under rated Dutchman Charlton. The vinyl only London operation offer a similarly intriguing selection for release number 2 with Audio Injection and Dax J the headline draw alongside up and comers Franco Gonzales and Cleric. The presence of David Flores' Audio Injection project is naturally quite impressive and "Charge" is typical of the booming heavyweight material the Los Angeles resident has been filtering through his own Droid imprint. Ear To The Ground's Dax J is on fine form with "From The Grave" which takes a frenetic approach to taut acid tinged raw techno that still finds room for moments of mechanised emotion. Down town "Natural Process A" sees Cleric draw on the melodic approach of 'BFC' era Carl Craig within a modern rhythmic framework whilst Argentinean Gonzales demonstrates a looseness in drum programming that immediately catches the ear on "Submarine".

Cat: BROS 002. Rel: 24 May 13
AW & PB - "209"
AT & HE - "Liars Go Astray"
Review: It may be a slight shift down in gears from the Brothers' first sonic ear-bashing, which saw the biologically linked Truss and Tessela supply the fizzing hot "UC" alongside Andrew and Dimitry of AnD and Tom Dicicco's monstrous "Multiple Visions", but BROS002 sees the label continue to canvas UK techno's all-embracing reach of industrial and experimental styles. A new cast of all-caps headline this second missive, which sees the label maintain it's sub rosa approach to releasing music. It's since been made known however that AW\\PB, aka Perc and Sync24 supplied the heated "209", while the Cassegrain duo, aka AT\\HE deliver "Liars Go Astray" - both of which furtively skirt between raw and steroid-injected electro and pulsating club techno.

Cong Burn 02
Cat: CB 02. Rel: 12 Mar 18
BFTT - "Public/Private"
Lack - "Absent"
Chekov - "Celeste"
Howes - "Untitled"
Review: Cong Burn made a mighty splash with its first release, clearly flaunting the kind of wares you'd expect to hear from Livity Sound alumni or other such esteemed techno renegades. The second installment is no slouch either, featuring a new cast of crooked creators offering up their wares for the modern mutant dancefloor. BFTT has a weighty low end thrum powering "Public/Private", while Lack takes things in a scuffed and nimble direction. Chekov pushes out into more experimental pastures with the broken beats and displaced sound design of "Celeste" and Howes creates a wonderful strain of mystical deep house for darkened souls. Each one of these tracks is loaded with flair and personality, yards ahead of your average generic knock offs and presenting something with real merit to the convoluted world of dance music.

Black & Tract - "Back Into A Corner"
Tropics Of Cancer - "Helen Gilgrist"
Golden Teacher - "Cedar Eels"
Claire - "The Line"
Stefen Blomeier - "They Have No Place In Paradise"
Review: The Glasgow-based label Clan Destine Records started the Clan Destine Traxx imprint a few months ago as an outlet for dance floor-focused cuts that tap into their label's DIY musical aesthetic. The fledgling label's first release set the tone with Dungeon Acid, Torn Hawk and Tuff Sherm lining the excellent Dark Acid 12" and this second release in the series is equally good. Optimo Music's Golden Teacher are heavily involved, contributing a track in "Cedar Eels" that feels like an extension of their polyrhythmic endeavours for JD Twitch's label. In addition some of the band appears under the Tropic Of Capricorn banner with the straight up acid techno banger "Helen Gilgrist" whilst Stefen Blomeier might just steal the show with the K'ed up Daphni stylings of "They Have No Place In Paradise".

Chad - "Afters" (ASOK remix)
Review: Three years in, Blackhall & Bookless' Jaunt label is becoming a serious force for forward thinking, fractured techno exploration. On this split EP with Chad, the duo take the A-side and present two different versions of "Links". The "Battle rework" is a tense and dramatic tumble through dub techno soundscapes, while the "Bleak remix" pares the elements down to a more focused, minimalist thrum. Chad presents a wholly different vibe on the flip, using rich, warm synthesiser tones to draw you in to "Afters", and then Scenery regular ASOK takes up remix duties on the track with an immersive version that borders on breakbeat.

Spectrum III
Review: BMCCW is a new project from Brendon Moeller, Clay Wilson and Certain Creatures issued by the Styles Upon Styles label. Spectrum is the project's first outing, and sees the extended combo delving into the murky world of out-there techno. In practice, that means thunderous beats, sub-heavy basslines, horror-influenced textures and psychedelic electronics. It's a formula that means for interesting - if occasionally intense - listening, with all three tracks sounding ready-made for dark rooms at five in the morning. Our pick is probably the acid-flecked bounce of "Spectrum 3" - a kind of intense take on early bleep records - though "Spectrum 1" is not far behind.
