Review: DIIV formed back in 2011 and made big impressions within the blog world and then the real world after debut single 'Sometime' picked up plenty of attention. It was follow up with two further singles as well as a cover of a Kurt Cobain tune 'Bambi Slaughter' and to mark the 10 year anniversary all of their debut album all of these 7"s re pulled together on vinyl and serve as a great reminder of where the band has come from. They scream DIY and are very indicated of the Brooklyn scene out of which they were born with songs that muse on love in all its many different ways.

Review: Collecting together most of their 7" releases onto this, their first album, 45Trio's keyboardist Swing-O/45, bassist Sunapanng and drummer Masahiko Kubo provide fans with not only their sold-out singles on the same label but new tracks too. So, enjoy their version of Patrice Rushen's 'Remind Me' that pares back the original, sweetening further this already sweet composition by marrying Fender Rhodes with vocoder, or relish Irvine Weldon's 'I Love You', as the sensitive keyboard again takes centre stage. Get lost in Loose Ends' 'A Little Spice' which is fairly true to the original but more synthesised with a jazzy hip hop break and the jerky more downbeat version of Gary Davis' 2006 track 'Gee Dee' reflecting the trio's love of paying homage but creating a different and slower groove. On Bloom Music, a label under the Japanese Flower Records 'Soul Review' soulfully reviews Trio 45s work to date, a must for fans disappointed not to have got in quick enough when tracks were first available on 7" and also for those newly initiated. You're all in for a treat.

Review: Ocala, Florida's easycore heroes A Day To Remember have become legends within the scene thanks to their fearless approach and compositional knack for marrying the most saccharine of earworm melodies with heaving, venomous metallic fury; resulting in an incomparable fluid style of post-metalcore meets pop-punk. Review: Los Angeles trio Acetone were one of the most quietly influential bands of the 1990s, blending elements of country, folk, and psychedelic rock into a unique sound that was all their own. Fans of Duster, Mazzy Star or Slint - but for whom a lilting country twang is also a necessary ingredient in the listening pie - will be sated. 1992-2001 collects the band's entire discography, including their legendary album If You Only Knew, which has been out of print for years. Sensitive, plodding and occupying only the haziest of backwaters of memory for most, highlights from this eerie LITA throwback include the tracks 'Germs' and 'Midnight Cowboy'. But all the tracks do the job, to be honest.

Review: Earlier in the year, British-Bahraini jazz musician Yazz Ahmed delivered her second album, a set so good that one critic (rightly) described it as "a modern jazz masterpiece". This surprisingly speedy follow-up is almost as good, and sees the masterful trumpeter and her musical accomplices guide us through a series of inventive original "fusion" compositions that variously fuse elements of big band jazz, Arabic musical culture, spiritual jazz, cinematic soundscapes, Afro-Cuban jazz and Blaxploitation-era jazz-funk. In other words, it's another strong set that confirms that looming superstar status of the effortlessly brilliant Ahmed.

Review: Sea Horse is a live album by Japanese reed instrument master Akira Miyazawa, together with a later incarnation of his quarrelsome quartet. One of his later 80s works - recorded after his return to jazz following a hiatus in the 1970s - Sea Horse thoroughly blurs hard distinctions between 'live album' and 'studio album', as its reissuer Light In The Attic rightly notes that the listener can barely hear the presence of the audience in the recording - though it is there. A mixture of both standards and originals are heard here, and all are brought together by Miyazawa's masterful saxophone playing, not least for Duke Ellington's 'In A Sentimental Mood', or Miyazawa's own, 'Baby Sea Horse'.

Review: Survival horror franchise Alan Wake saw its second instalment in 2023, following the game series' 2010 debut. Again, we follow novelist Alan Wake, as he attempts to escape his imprisonment in an alternate dimension by penning a horror story about an FBI agent, Saga Anderson. Both a detective story and a shoot 'em up, the second game bolsters the franchise's neo-noir and gothic Midwestern tropes; the soundtrack is fittingly both lachrymose and chilling, with its contributing scorers - Petri Alanko, Old Gods Of Asgard, Jean Castel and more - portraying Nordic moods of modern, nailbiting mystery. Through stark, grim, minor-keyed anthems, trip-hop furrowers and trembly orchestral laments, we find dead bodies found in the woods, fight spriggan-esque creatures, and soak in moods of noir crime psychodrama, all chillingly captured in a single sonic melange.
