Floyd James & The GTs - "Work That Thang" (2:50)
Curtis Baker & The Bravehearts - "Fried Fish ’n’ Collard Greens" (2:40)
The Native Yinzer - "The Hip Strip" (2:33)
Review: The fourth edition in Original Gravity's Down In The Basement series, which gathers instrumental soul and swing cuts onto worthy 7" slabs, resounding the fervent 1960s decadal gap in which mod reigned supreme. With juleps flowing and kneecaps knocking, Abramo & Nestor bring newfangled electric pianistic swing with 'Dig It!', while a twinned "hit it!" injunction is heard from Floyd James & The GTs on the reissued 'Work That Thang'; James' voice is tubed and speed-delayed to terrific effect, achieving a sprung intonation. Curtis Baker brassifies the bonanza with the lively 'Fried Fish 'n' Collard Greens', while The Native Yinzer's exiting excitation 'The Hip Strip' quilts our ears with a mnemic, down-feathery Hammond-breaks bit.

Aceedo Domingo - "Corre Riba" (4:25)
Those Guys From Athens - "Na Bola" (3:45)
DJ Laurel - "Peanut Man" (5:08)
Monsieur Van Pratt - "Lose Your Mind" (4:24)
Review: As the title suggests, there's an undeniably humid, sun-kissed and tropical feel to Act of Sedition's latest double-dose of seven-inch re-edits. Accedo Domingo lives up to his name by adding squelchy TB-303 lines and relaxed house beats to a stirring Cape Verde dancefloor jam on "Corre Riba", before Those Guys From Athens deliver a chunky, house-style revision of a turn-of-the-80s MPB classic ("No Bola"). Over on the second "45", DJ Laurel tools up an undeniably funky disco number (the stellar "Peanut Man") before Monsieur Von Pratt makes an already heavy disco-funk number even weightier ("Lose Your Mind").

Zulu Walk (part 1) (3:55)
Zulu Walk (part 2 - instrumental) (3:43)
Review: If you missed this one when it first dropped in 2011, now's your chance to catch up on a serious slice of rootsy funk with some heavyweight players involved. Afrika Bambaatta teamed up with The Mighty Mocambos and Charlie Funk to record "Zulu Walk", and what a result. The groove is incredible, deep in the pocket and rolling forward with a mellow urgency that works for "Part 1" and the instrumental "Part 2" on the flip. King Kamonzi rides the beat on the A side in fine style, capturing a wild energy that wouldn't be out of place in the P-Funk pantheon. True-skool funk heads, don't sleep.

Rar (single version) (3:56)
Rar (Radio Citizen vinyl mix) (3:57)
Review: Berlin's finest contemporary Afrofunk quintet lay down a freaky piece of spirited cosmic boogie where all is not what it seems... What begins as a pretty straight forward groove is gradually layered with more and more Manzarek-style freestyle organ slapping. The result is a really dense but playful construction that sounds genuinely unique. Looking for something with just a little more framework? Flip for Radio Citizen's chunkier, floor-minded remix. Rar indeed!

Sanctify (4:03)
Sanctify (T Groove Smooth mix) (4:14)
Review: Love Touch Records has a devilishly simple game plan: to release brand-new revivalist boogie, electrofunk and synth-powered soul songs on seven-inch singles. Here, the label's very first release from late 2019- which, incredibly, sold out simply through social media hype - finally gets a wider release. It's well worth checking, because it's a terrific slab of smooth, spacey, talk box-sporting slab of synth-soul from vocalist Amalia, label regulars The Precious Lo's and modern boogie wizard Brian Ellis, who provides a killer synth solo rich in wavy, LFO-trigger action. Over on the flip T-Groove provides a "Smooth Mix" - a more thickset take built around warm chords and one of the most squelchy synthesizer basslines we've ever hard.

The Apples - "Attention!"
The Quartertones - "Caffeine" (DJ Format's Getaway version)
Review: In anticipation of the forthcoming follow up to the hugely popular "Stay On The Groove" compilation, Freestyle drop another couple of sublime modern funk nuggets on 45. Beaming in directly from Israel, The Apples give us the insanely catchy "Attention!" - lifted from their debut album of the same name, this is an essential slice of dancefloor funk. Updating the classic funk sound, The Apples drop heavy instrumentation over a looped up break, alongside some fresh cuts and scratches. Rumoured to be a live experience not to miss, we hope to be able to bring you more from this energetic set. Over on the flip, Canada's finest The Quartertones drop another hefty chunk of funk with the highly charged "Caffeine". Stepping up on remix duties is the UK's very own DJ Format who applies the brakes and beefs up the beats with his trademark funk sound. Sounding like the theme to the worlds funkiest car chase, it's hard to imagine this not killing it on the dancefloor!

The Aswads - "I'm So Proud" (4:12)
The Naturall Band - "There Was" (3:46)
Review: Clap City is dropping some next-level heat right now for those who like their soul super sweet. This particular 7" - which comes with a booklet - is a reissue of Aswads' delightful 'I'm So Proud'. It is very much defined by its glorious male falsetto vocal, which is aided by some acoustic guitars and subtle but dramatic drumming that rises and falls to accompany the emotional roller coaster of the vocal line. Things sped right up for the high-speed funk case that is The Naturall Band's tight and intense 'There Was' on the flip. An absolute must-cop.

Everybody Loves The Sunshine (vocal) (4:36)
Everybody Loves The Sunshine (instrumental) (4:36)
Review: 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine' represented a pivotal moment for Roy Ayers and Ubiquity as it marked a shift towards a funkier, more relaxed sound in 1976. It is one of his best-loved tunes as a result and always comes out when the weather warms up. That means it also often gets reissued, as it does here, as the track captures the essence of summer through joyful lyrics and a hypnotic groove. Ayers' vibraphone melodies intertwine seamlessly with the band's instrumentation while on the flip us an instrumental that offers a slightly different vibe. It all comes on nice yellow marbled vinyl.

With its languid tempo and dreamy atmosphere, captures the essence of summer with its joyful lyrics and hypnotic groove. Ayers' vibraphone melodies intertwine seamlessly with the band's instrumentation, creating a mesmerizing sonic landscape that resonates with listeners. Badder Than Evil - "Hot Wheels" (extended edit) (3:36)
The Chosen Few - "Funky Buttercup" (extended edit) (2:33)
Review: This dinked 7" features extended edits of two break-digging funk faves. On the A-side, the un-credited re-editor takes his or her scalpel to "Hot Wheels", a relatively well-known cut by Angelo Badalamenti and Al Elias under the Badder Than Evil alias. Wisely concentrating on the killer drums, wah-wah guitar licks and rising horn lines, the edit extends the track in all the right places for increased dancefloor pressure. On the flip you'll find a hot-to-trot extension of The Chosen Few's 1976 single "Funky Buttercup", which wisely extends the breaks for hip-hop DJ use. The break extensions sound slightly tighter than the original version, but the track has lost none of its instinctive swing.

The Kevin Fingier Collective - "Addis Ababa" (3:14)
Review: Fingier is Acid Jazz's new sub label for the multifarious works of Argentinian producer Kevin Fingier. Fingier touches on soul, R&B, boogaloo and raw funk in his music, and that's true once again on this collaboration with Abdoulaye Badiane. Badiane is originally from Senegal but now based in Argentina, and he's been travelling the world for 20 years teaching African music. Now he brings his musical heritage to bear on Fingier's funk, and the fusion is incredibly sweet and soulful. 'Kairo Bancou Moulu' has a 60s touch, while 'Addis Ababa' naturally takes its cues from the incredible legacy of Ethiopian jazz.

The Native Yinzer - "Return Of The Yinzer" (2:54)
Review: The third volume of this series delivers an irresistible blend of funk and 60s-inspired grooves. Side-1 kicks off with a surf-rock-infused funk jam packed with energy and retro vibes. Following that, a swinging 60s sound that combining catchy rhythms and pop sensibilities keeps the momentum going. Side-2 shifts gears a groove-heavy track led by a soulful organ that oozes vintage charm. Closing the collection, there is a gem that features smooth, funk-driven melodies, topped off by a standout sax solo and a subtle British flair. This compilation offers a vibrant mix of styles, perfect for fans of classic funk with a modern twist.

Funky Soul (part 1) (1:58)
Funky Soul (part 2) (2:32)
Review: 'Funky Soul' - a 1970 single from New Orleans band David Batise & The Gladiators - rose to prominence in the 1990s thanks to its inclusion on several high-profile funk compilations, before finding further success thanks to a Breakestra cover in the early 2000s. Ahead of a new collection of unheard cuts from the southern funk band, Family Groove records has decided to reissue it. In it's A-side 'Part 1' form, the track is a killer instrumental funk workout rich in razor-sharp guitar licks, weighty bass, crunchy drum breaks and hazy horns (the arrangement of which was provided by Isaac Hayes). Arguably even more frantic and energetic is the flipside 'Part 2' take, whose call-and-response vocals were a familiar feature of the band's popular live shows.

Hummin' A Sad Song (2:25)
Review: It was Dave Godin including this lush bit of aching Louisiana deep soul on the first Deep Soul Treasures CD that renewed interest in it. Now, original copies are pricey and hard to find and last year a nice cover version was served up by Lady Blackbird. The good folk at Beat Goes Public aka BGP have decide to reissue the original. It's an impossible to ignore track laden with heartbreak. On the flip side is another bluesy soul gem in the form of 'Hummin' A Sad Song.'

Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) (Flying Fish dub) (2:57)
Review: Here's a cover which can't fail to please a huge crowd, as Betty Black takes on Eurythmics' eternal 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)'. Black has been hitting her stride as a modern day soul diva after moving on from her accomplished roots voicing some iconic UK garage tunes, and her cover of 'Cry Me A River' is no joke either. Backed up by The Family Fortune and bringing an undeniable 60s sass to her performance, she makes the track her own. As well as the full vocal version on the A-side, the B-side has the slightly edited, dubbed out 'Work Out' version for when you want to work up a sweat.

Review: This one got a special Japanese Edition reissue in Spring last year but is such an in-demand delight that now comes other pressing. It finds Betty Black serving up her own sublime cover of Eurythmics' mega hit 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)'. She is a modern-day soul diva who used to vocalise UK garage tunes and now shows another side to her bow. She is backed up by The Family Fortune and adds plenty of 60s sass to the original which as well as including the full vocal version on the A-side, also has a more dubbed-out edit on the B-side.

Birmingham Traveleers - "Call Me, Answer" (3:47)
Gospel Ambassadors - "This Little Light Of Mine" (2:58)
Review: Having previously championed rare and little-known gospel disco, crate digger Greg Belson has now turned his attention to the world of gospel funk and gospel sound. This must-check "45" boasts two obscure, hard-to-find gems from the British DJ and re-editor's forthcoming compilation, Greg Belson's Divine Funk. The A-side offers a chance to cop Birmingham Traveleers' [sic] ultra-rare, private press cut 'Call Me Answer', where guest vocalist Henry Burton spars with the male harmony group over a flash-fried-mid-tempo funk groove. It's really rather good all told, as is the Gospel Ambassadors' flipside cover of gospel staple 'This Little Light of Mine' - a rolling, breakbeat funk interpretation that's as groovy, righteous and life-affirming as they come.

They take care of the a-side of this red hot release from Funk Night with 'Flowman Break', a bubbling, loose limbed funk bumper that is full flavour and full of playful funk. Tatasomba's 'Kaleidoscope' is a little more paired back and coy, with a conversational bassline and jangling cow bells that keep you on the move.

Review: The Originals sample-seeking series continue as we're asked to compare and contrast an original source and a classic execution made years later. This is a perfect example; here Blue Mitchell's Blue Note 1967 smoky jazz instrumental (taken from his Heads Up! album) is remembered in all its multi-strand narrative glory before we jump deep into early 90s b-boy heaven by way of New York's UMC's. A fine lesson in how to work a sample to the funkiest effect.

Review: Blimey....not one single, not two but three 45's housed as a triple pack of essential re-issued releases from New Orleans label Seven B via the mighty Jazzman label. This package picks out possibly the rarest and best tracks from the label which traverses the genres of breakbeat funk, Northern Soul and original Rhythm n Blues flavour. One highlight for us here at Juno towers is the infectious "Something Out Of Nothing" from Lenny McDaniel & The New Era which starts off with a stompy organ and fierce brass section before a thumping bass and fat beat drums take over the proceedings. Elsewhere there's the amazing Roger & The Gypsies jam "Pass The Hatchett" which starts off with a growling bass, picked rhythm guitar before Roger drops those immortal lines.''Let Me Chop It.. Let Me Chop It'' over b-boy drums. Pure gold!

It's another scorcher from 1970 right here, except that Eddie is joined by The Soul Finders across two parts of the majestic "We're Doing It (Thang)".
