  1. Let's Funk Tonight (Full extended version) (9:56)
  2. Let's Funk Tonight (Faze Action dub) (5:43)
Review: Blue Feather were a truly blue-eyed funk outfit from the Netherlands who had a prolific run in the 80s with two albums and a string of club singles to their name. "Let's Funk Tonight" was surely one of their bigger hits, and it sounds resplendent with a fresh master and the full extended version spread out across the A side here. Offering something new for the modern market, Best call upon Faze Action to flesh out this reissue with a killer dub of the track that treads softly but funks deep, just like a good dub should.

Shadows From Nowhere (Danilo Braca mix) (limited blue vinyl 12")
Cat: SPQR1135 / BSTX009RRBLUE. Rel: 20 May 19
Disco/Reediciones
  1. Shadows From Nowhere (5:29)
  2. Marie (4:48)
  3. Shadows From Nowhere (Danilo Braca ReVision) (9:04)
Review: In the previous reissues we talked so much about this fantastic piece and "Marie", a very cinematic and supportive song, that now it is appropriate to dwell on the re-visited version of Danilo Braca that extends beautifully on the AA side of this new remastered reprint. Danilo who lives in the big apple often frequents Ibiza, perhaps also for this he has been able to exalt the most rhythmic elements of "Shadows from Nowhere", putting the beautiful falsetto beats to excessive movements, just like the waves that wash themselves on the sandy beaches of the White Island. His teacher Mario Gentili from Layer Bows added a beautiful arrangement for the strings and his Italian-New York collaborator Alvise Marino spread some fragments of guitar powder on top. That's it. 9 minutes of pure bliss, but also of catchy rhythm!

Review: Written, produced and recorded in Sheffield and Ibiza between 2016 and 2018, Nature Sounds Of The Balearics is Mark Barrott's third full length album following up two volumes in his Sketches From An Island series.. The International Fell boss described the musical outcome as a techno album of sorts, with influences harking back to the days of Warp's Artificial Intelligence compilations or SSR's Freezone series (as heard on the zeitgeist of '90s IDM like "TRIX/Ichimoku"), chill out ("Donchian Reprise") and Detroit's mellower moments like on the evocative "Point & Figure".

Review: Widely regarded as Boards of Canada's finest hour, Music Has The Right To Children finds itself the subject of a well-deserved 2LP gatefold reissue from Warp Records. One of the most defining records of what was known for better or worse as IDM still sounds as timeless as it did in 1998, as the library tones of "Wildlife Analysis", thick downtempo rhythms of "Roygbiv" and out of focus melodies of "Olson" prove. Essential!

Review: Given that it's been eight years since the last Boards of Canada album, Tomorrow's Harvest should, by rights, push Daft Punk's Random Access Memories in the hype stakes. Certainly, it's a fine set. During their sabbatical, Marcus Eoin and Michael Sandison have lost none of their power to amaze and impress. Chords drone, samples hiss, synths shimmer and beats swing. There are intense ambient moments and intoxicating, post-IDM dreamscapes. It is in turns icy, warm, introspective and blindingly picturesque. Throughout, Tomorrow's Harvest is impeccably atmospheric, conjuring images of windswept Scottish moors, becalmed Cornish bays and maudlin pagan ceremonies. As comeback records go, it's pretty darn good.

Review: Since first emerging at the tail end of the '90s, Simon Green has become downtempo music's most marketable star, appealing just as much to occasional listeners and 40-something housewives as underground heads. Throughout that time, he's carefully shifted his sound to take in current trends and musical developments, whilst retaining a certain picturesque aesthetic. This fifth full-length, his fourth for Ninja Tune, continues that trend. Amongst the usual shuffling beats and twinkling melodies you'll find garage-esque vocal cut-ups, rubbery dancefloor rhythms, Floating Points style neo-jazz, string-laden two-step and some seriously wonky soul featuring vocals from Erykah Badu.

  11. Mang Dynasty - "After Dark" (dub)
  12. Detachments - "The Flowers That Fel"
Review: The first installment of Late Night Tales' After Dark was that rarest of things: a DJ mix that retained a smoky sense of early morning, home listening atmosphere while retaining an open-minded focus on the dancefloor. This follow-up - once again compiled and mixed by Bill Brewster - offers more of the same. Musically it's pleasingly varied, moving from the string-drenched downtempo beauty of Typesun's "Last One Home", to the heady Balearic rock of General Lee, via Justus Kohnke, the soulful post-bruk smoothness of As One, and the sprightly analogue electronics of Emperor Machine's remix of Paqua's "Late Train". There's also a bunch of previously unreleased tunes to enjoy, including killer contributions from the Mang Dynasty (AKA Ray Mang), The Gino Fontaine (Chicken Lips man Andrew Meecham) and - most surprising of all - The Grid and Robert Fripp.

Review: It's not often you come across an artist you can genuinely refer to as a 'cult legend', but Vashti Bunyan is truly that. A full 35 years on from her only previous album, the singer returns with her first new solo work, a breathtakingly beautiful album. Now based in Edinburgh, Vashti's story tells of the thwarted promise of early fame, disenchantment, long-term exile and eventual rediscovery. In the mid-sixties, after quitting art school to concentrate on music, she was discovered by The Rolling Stones' guru, Andrew Loog Oldham, signed to Decca and recorded a single written by Jagger/Richards. Reviews touted her as 'the new Marianne Faithful' or the 'female Bob Dylan' (though Vashti claimed to be neither), yet further singles remained unreleased, leading to despair and a rejection of the music industry. After living under canvas in the bushes behind Ravensbourne College of Art, she bought a horse and cart and set off in 1968 with her boyfriend for the dream of a creative colony that the singer Donovan was setting up on the Isle of Skye. It took nearly two long years to get there, by which time Donovan had left, but the experience formed the songs for "Just Another Diamond Day", the album recorded by Joe Boyd (featuring members of The Incredible String Band and Fairport Convention) in November 1969, during a trip back to London. On the album's muted release, rather than hang around to promote the record, Vashti left the city again to live with the ISB in the Scottish Borders, and then (with horses, wagons, dogs and children) on to Ireland and obscurity. The record slipped out in a tiny pressing and was rapidly forgotten, yet gradually over the years accrued a cult currency as a lost English classic. In the late nineties, typing her own name into an internet search engine, Vashti became aware of this interest, and after tracking down the masters/rights, "JADD" was re-released - almost thirty years after she had "abandoned it and music forever" - to huge critical acclaim (The Observer Music Monthly placed it at 53 in their 'Top 100 British albums'). A host of young, new admirers emerged citing her influence, and Vashti has since recorded with Piano Magic, The Cocteau Twins' Simon Raymonde, Devendra Banhart, and with Animal Collective on the "Prospect Hummer" EP. Far from being simply some kind of appendage tacked onto the end of an amazing story and a past classic, "Lookaftering" is a fully beautiful album in its own right. produced by fellow Edinburgh resident Max Richter - who also co-arranged with Vashti, it's a rich, beautifully arranged and stirring album. Developing gradually and organically - with work initially taking place between Max and Vashti's homes, and then at various studios in Edinburgh, London and Glasgow - "Lookaftering" is anchored around Vashti's voice and picked acoustic guitar, and Max's piano playing and co-arranging. Its instrumentation includes a string quartet, oboe, harp, French horn, recorder, flute, hammer dulcimer, glasses, harmonium, and Rhodes piano, and it features contributions from Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart, Adem, Adam Pierce (Mice Parade), Robert Kirby (Nick Drake etc.), Otto Hauser and Kevin Barker (Espers / Currituck County).

Review: Prolific UK deep house hero Andy Compton is back on his fabled Peng stable with a new project entitled Blue Dream, and an album called California Dreaming which unsurprisingly deals in gorgeous sun soaked tones aimed squarely at the loungey end of his plush, melodic repertoire. From the slinking funk of "Betsy" to the low-slung beats and smooth-as-silk bass of "Disco Baby," Compton shows himself to be completely at home rolling at this kind of tempo, no doubt projecting himself to the Malibu beach idyll you can see on the cover. Music so radiant, you'd best slap on some sunblock.
