Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged, record slightly warped***

ViGis opening salvo for 2025 brings together four artists from four continents who all blend their own diverse cultural roots and influences into a superb collection of cuts for the club. This is a 12" that offers a refreshing take on familiar sounds and delivers subtle yet punchy variations in style and rhythm. Adema keeps it nice and clean and slick on the deep, bubbly tech of 'Jm Glavio' while Red Pig Flower's 'Stardust' is a zoned-out roller. Artur Nikolaev's 'New Edition' is a deft minimal soundscape with warped lines and bubbles dub undercurrents. Cladu shuts down with 'No Name' which is a more propulsive cut.

Dan Andrei - "Si Un Ecou" (8:07)
Root - "Apophis" (7:36)
Clock Poets - "Galaxy" (13:45)
Review: Clock Poets returns with Surrealism, a three-track various artists exploration of minimal techno and micro-house. Dan Andrei's 'Si Un Ecou' is a stripped-back, bass-heavy roller that is simmering with tension before erupting into modulated synths. Root's 'Apophis' delivers swing-heavy micro-house with shuffling drums and growling synth textures which nod to the genre's golden era. Clock Poets' 'Galaxy' on the flip is a sprawling 14-minute live-recorded jam rich in intricate sound design to end with a classy touch. Surrealism masterfully balances moods and textures here and makes for another refined entry in the Clock Poets catalogue for lovers of thoughtful, hypnotic dance sounds.

Cedric Dekowski - "Roayal" (7:18)
Luca Piermattei - "Aerial Silk" (6:27)
Thilo Dietrich - "72th Chord" (6:46)
Review: Polarity keeps on the early pressure and quality it has shown over its first few releases with another searing EP that is aimed square at the floor. A quarter of different artists contribute to the '4 Intense Stories EP' and Giuseppe Angeloro opens up in bristling fashion with 'Sequenza Libera' a coarse acid workout. Cedric Dekowski's 'Roayal' has a more trippy take on techno with its unusual sci-fi energy and Luca Piermattei's 'Aerial Silk' has you in freefall as the synth sequences ride up and down the scale over mechanical beats. Thilo Dietrich shits down with a nice techno stomper with plenty of warped lines.

Jay Tripwire & Miller - "BC75109" (6:23)
T NA - "Nicky" (6:33)
Crihan - "Hocus Pocus" (7:47)
Review: An enviously sick, fidget-dub-minimal-tech blastoff from Into The Woods, the London imprint whose efforts to push the genre, in a city where it may indeed need more force behind it, are admirable. The first V/A of a new series, ITW have hand-picked an impressing array of artists here; choose your fighter: Crihan, Jay Tripwire & Miller, Vlad Arapasu, and the fast-rising T.Na all feature. First up, it's Vlad, with 'Hidden In The Chaos', whose title invites us to decipher the message coiled about the technical scytale: the track's so-said "chaos" betrays its mad method, its impish persona portrayed through random-modded bass pitch bobs set against a fizzing backbeat. Tripwire and Miller add much texture to the proceedings, sweeping our ears unto a journey into what sounds like frayed cabling and clairaudient voices; then T.Na seriously impresses with truly, properly balanced beat and bass elements, with evil demonic gurgling and laughter aplenty, on 'Nicky'; and finally, Crihan rounds things off on a note of gruff, grit-laid wizardry with 'Hocus Pocus'.

On the B-side, Nicola Brusegan and Camilo Gil unite to create a soulful deep house track complete with lush chords and pulsating basslines, and this one is paired with a remix from Jorge Caiado that is sure to electrify dance floors thanks to his knack for crafting statement-making sound and pulsating acid vibes.

Review: Fantastic Friends reaches out to welcome us into its inner circle once more with another tasteful tech house outing. this time a various artists affair with some tasty talent. Christian Burkhardt opens up with 'Rytm Mod' with its wide vocal sounds and chunky, funky low end. Chris Llopis's 'Dubster' us a bubbly number with fluid bass and liquid rhythms and Nils Twachtmann's 'Space Odyssey' get cosmic with a spaced-out and late-night ambient vibe. Filou shuts down with 'Sophe' which is a skittish number with dubbed out and rolling low ends.

Review: Christian Rinderman, aka C-Rock, has been a key figure in Frankfurt's house scene since the 90s, consistently delivering deep and funky tracks regardless of fleeting trends. His first release in 1995 included the club favourite 'Funky Dope Trakk,' which quickly gained support from local and international DJs. Ricardo Villalobos, among others, played the tune relentlessly for decades. In 2012/13, C-Rock's own label Lo-Fi Stereo remixed and reissued the track, but those versions have since become rare and sought-after. Now, 'All That Jelly' is reissuing the four original versions, freshly remastered from the original DATs, ensuring they'll remain dancefloor staples for the next 30 years.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Slight surface marks ***

Groovin Italy landed a monumental reissue for the label with C'hantal's 'The Realm'. Originally released way back in 1990 on the dance and early Brooklyn based Powertraxx records. Staying true to the original release, it offers the 'Love In D Minor' mix but does one better in tucking in the Acapella version to the A-side so the B-side 2 versions have a little more room to breathe. The added bonus has to be putting on the more rare "Wild Club mix' to the party along with the original 'Rave Mix'. All and all, a very packed reissue of some of the best versions of the track, all on one record. This might just hold the number one spot for best techno reissue so far of 2024.

Review: Alexis Cabrera has always liked to subvert expectations and cross traditional genre lines in his work. He does so again here on the On_NRV label which brims with inventive spirit. 'Mi Housa Es Tu Housa' is a vibrant minimal house cut with some fresh synth sounds looping through rolling and infectious drums. 'Balas Que Pican Cerca' has a more abstract cosmic feel with menacing sci-fi pads and unreeling drum funk. 'Expiration Pain' has a steely aesthetic with rugged and textural synth motifs looping up through the mix and last of all, 'Under That Blue Sea' is a more balmy cut that allows you to catch your breadth amongst some deeper grooves.

Your Name On My Arm (7:18)
Do You Wanna Wonder (7:13)
Review: Following years spent serving up sounds on a wide variety of underground labels (Into The Woods, Atipic and Infuse included), Alexis Cabrera renews his productive partnership with Raum Musik - a label he last appeared on four years ago. The EP highlight is unquestionably A-side 'Dreaming of a Silver Future', a sparkling and positive-sounding affair in which spoken word snippets, shimmering stabs, jacking drum fills and tight TB-303 tweaks rise above a chunky bassline and restless drums. Flipside opener 'Your Name On My Arm' is a rugged and decidedly moody affair in which blackened electronics, trippy samples and dystopian sonics, cropped vocal samples and short TB-303 tweaks ride a charred bassline and chunky tech-house beats, while 'Do You Wanna Wonder' is a hypnotic and lightly intergalactic European tech-house roller with notably crunchy drums and a few nods to Twilo-era Danny Tenaglia.

Review: Gaston Cabrera, an Argentinian producer on the rise, delivers a captivating four-tracker for Exarde. 'Romance Electro' sets the tone with pulsating synths and driving percussion, conjuring a dark and hypnotic atmosphere. Cabrera's sound blends house and techno with a touch of Italo-disco, creating a unique sonic tapestry. 'Baile Y Drama' picks up the pace, its infectious groove and swirling melodies leading the listener on an exhilarating journey. On the flip, 'Atmosfera Yonki' is a masterclass in sonic manipulation, its haunting textures and disorienting soundscapes evoking a descent into the depths of a Buenos Aires nightclub. The EP closes with '7AM', a melancholic yet uplifting exploration of intricate rhythms and introspective melodies. With its diverse sounds and undeniable dancefloor appeal, this EP is a testament to Cabrera's talent.

Crystal Fox (6:07)
Review: French producer Caim impresses us all with their newest EP for Autodidact, 'Nebula'. Whether or not he is self-taught, we could, regardless, believe it to be true, judging just by the sound of this EP alone. Evidently undeterred by the fear of loss of vim in loss of speed, this glassy, prismatic minimal/progressive techno EP gets progressively slower in tempo, beginning on the rousing ghost-scapes of 'Space Cadet' before moving into the waterier Atlantean wonk-chugs of 'Nebula' and 'Crystal Fox'. All three tracks demonstrate the best of Caim's ability to craft dispersive, refractive soundscapes - as if its raw constituent synth parts had been granularly "shone" through a brilliant, many-faced diamond - and still fit them between otherwise gnarly sets of beats.

Melchior is one of our favs when it comes to silky, deep, minimal house and here delivers a remix that retains the original's groove while smoothly transitioning into lush synth vibes. Flabbergast's Guillaume Coutu Dumont and Vincent Lemieux have a sound just as distinctive and offer two remixes that push micro-house's limits. Their tracks feature mind-bending effects, Moog-style synth hooks and a burst of percussion that all lead the remixes to a new level of dance floor ecstasy.

White Boards (Melchior Productions LTD remix)
Review: Italian pair Carebears bring a freaky twist to their brand of minimal here. 'Phone Home' has a wonky dial tone that slowly disorientates you over loopy drums and bass and 'White Boards' then gets more raw. The drums are precise and militant and the mood is mysterious. Remixing is Thomas Melchior, who to our mind has made some of the most unique minimal cuts of the last 15-plus years. His deftness always shines thorough in his airy, hypnotic drums and here as Melchior Productions LTD he does that again, flipping 'White Boards' into something that is weightless yet rooted on the floor and dreamy but driving.

All hitting hard with an old-school, sequencer-happy flavour, one which requires no second-guessing, our faves here have to be the basal FM roller 'Zone' and the brash, trashyard B-fronter 'No Frequency', both of which make deft use of the same bassline, yet each to drastically different effec.

The title track, 'Cold World,' merges futuristic and hypnotic elements of techno and house to great success. 'Pump It Up' channels the spirit of late 80s Chicago with a wicked acid house vibe. Side-2 opens with 'Only Desire,' a sure-fire track reminiscent of Adonis' style on Trax Records. The EP closes with 'Lost In A Groove,' a super smooth track that echoes the essence of Larry Heard. 'Flashback' kicks off with some super silky and deep grooves topped with heady pads and dusty percussion. 'Modem' has a rueful feel to the pads and some nice jacked beats while 'Liquid City' casts your mind adrift among floating pads and dreamy chords for comedown sessions after the club has shut. On side A, Dani Casarano kicks off with deep, hypnotic grooves that make for an immersive atmosphere before transitioning to punchy, bass-driven energy with other cuts. Side B introduces a new alter ego from Felian and Bruno Schmidt and the pair explore a robotic, looping groove with incidental breaks and nostalgic synths in the euphoric third track. Now the Bristol-based selector has commissioned a bunch of tasty remixes of it that all twist the original into different but equally effective new realms. Huerta brings his breezy but banging house style with hints of garage, Saoirse feeds it through her melon-twisting minimal filter and MoMa Ready gets for a chest-puffed and dub-infused big room sound. Peach's Booty Bongo mix is exactly that while our fav is from K-Lone whose Creamix is a bubbly and super catchy rework with a hot vocal and neon chords. Lovely stuff.

Review: A feature of Shanti Celeste's sets for the best part of a year, 'Ice Cream Dream Boy' is arguably the Peach Discs founder's most accessible, joyous and impactful single to date - a genuine anthem in the making with serious crossover potential. In its original mix form (track one), it's a bouncy, lightly acid-flecked slab of colourful deep house pop topped off with a hybrid sung and spoken vocal delivered by the British-Chilean artist (who, we shouldn't forget, appeared as a vocalist on several records before making her production debut). She provides a trio of alternate takes herself: the rolling, punchy and enjoyable 'Sorbet Dub', the tougher, darker and more percussive 'Functional Gelato Mix', and the self-explanatory 'Soft & Swirly Acapella'.

Review: Denmark's Central (Natal Zaks) offers an unusually raspy palette on their latest for Help Records, 'Plask', fusing the circuit-bent, dubby sound of the European sophisti-techno traditions with the arrangements and sensibilities of progressive ambient techno. Giving off something of the vibe of a late summer solstice festival melded fluidly with that of a cerebral, chemically-aided morning after, 'Nago' and 'Jackfruit' pay careful attention to the control of droughty texture, refusing to allow the otherwise indulged drum saturation to impinge on the overall dynamics (no wonder "harmony" refers to both music and sociality). Title track 'Plask' veers more peaktime shuffle, with the odd tripletting refraction heard contrasting an otherwise pressure-packed, virile mix, and an alternate version of 'Jackfruit' rounding things off for pacier measure.

Review: In 1992, a trio of Italian house music producers brought to light one of house music's inherent contradictions: that a genre can be both ex-centric, and hold a stylistic centre. So far, house's haecceity, it's hearty essence, has held firm for nearly 50 odd years. And some records nail the inner sound of a sound, as though experiments need not only take place on the outskirts, beyond the walls, but also using the building blocks kept enclosed within the fortress. On this Groovin reissue, Davide Ruberto, Patrick Duvoisin and Ricky Montanari triply unveil the piano as one of the coremost ingredients of house music, with staccato chords standing right out on the titular 'Alright, Alright', of which there are four mixes here. Here's an unusual kind of rawness, blending as-do building blocks with a minimal but perfectible soul.

Review: Darwin Chamber is an alias of Mark Greenfield, an artist who has very much shaped the Bay Area sound across his career. He has done it all from ambient and trip-hop to breakbeats as far back as the 90s. This EP distils all those many years of sound into some sophisticated cuts that go deep. 'Hush' is a quiet downtempo opener, 'Cat Daddy' (Meow mix) brings some funky beats and 'Subway (M Train mix)' has more unsettling texture and languid percussive drums that lock you into a groove then 'Droptone' closes out with nods to a raw 90s rave sound and psyched out synths.

Review: Polish sensation Charlie delivers the instrumental mix of title track, 'Spacewoman,' on Wrong Era. It is a real gem that features powerful percussion and mesmerising, infectious arpeggios that stay true to her authentic Proto-Italo style. Charlie's mysterious vocals craft an esoteric narrative with lyrics like "I fly where infinity expands" propelling listeners deeper into her universe and the euphoric chorus offers a transcendental experience that only adds to the interstellar journey.

Review: The opening track on this release struts with a rolling bassline that could anchor any dancefloor. Layered atop are sharp, metallic percussive hits, interspersed with an eerie, almost celestial synth line that creeps into focus. The music has a cinematic quality; each moment feels deliberate, as though you're stepping into a tightly woven narrative. There's a tension at play here, too-the kind that builds anticipation without ever snapping into predictability. Instead of delivering straightforward house tropes, this EP leans into shadowy, off-kilter rhythms that refuse to settle, keeping you just slightly on edge. These tracks are about crafting mood and movement, creating space for subtle builds and unexpected breaks. The result feels more like a journey than a destination-a story told through restrained but impactful instrumentation.

Gideon's Legacy (6:52)
Review: You'll find fewer headier and more impactful hybrid tech-house/deep house cuts than 'Binga', the lightly breakbeat-driven gem that opens this EP from up-and-coming artist Philip Chernikov. Featuring plenty of trippy effects, dusty samples, driving bass and echoing, spaced-out riffs, it offers a neat summary of the producer's signature sound - and what you can expect from the rest of this fine four-tracker. For proof, check the sub-heavy, tech-house-with-breakbeats flex of 'Multicultural', the funky bass, spacey chords and restless beats of 'Dopey', and the delay-laden early morning delights of 'Gideon's Legacy', where dreamy chords, echoing vocal snippets and ultra-deep sub-bass catch the ear.

Review: Impressively wide and etheric new minimal / prog tech house from Italy's Toto Chiavetta, who returns to Mind Against's HABITAT sub-imprint with 'My Eyes Are Falling'. Rarely do we hear progressive house artists indulging such futuristic sound-palettes, if not for the fact that such sonic and textural detail often naturally spurs artists into more abstracted explorations away from dance music. But Chiavetta reins this impulse in, and keeps firmly rooted in the dance world by way of mega-surrounded breath-voices (courtesy of singer Trenton) and stratospherically catchy synth evaporations. Everything here, too, from the unpredictable, grid-flouting synthwork of 'The Sacred Space' to the ensuing remixes of the title track, sounds just as exo-worldly as the occult lifeform portrayed on the front cover.

Review: Chicaiza, co-owner of Berlin's Kimchi Records, makes a confident solo debut on Off The Grid. These tracks strike a balance between warm, melodic textures and a subtle melancholy that feels both introspective and grounded. Each piece reveals a careful attention to detail, with rhythms and atmospheres that evolve naturally. Perfectly aligned with the label's aesthetic, this release captures the understated refinement of an artist exploring new creative spaces while staying deeply connected to his roots in Berlin's underground.

Review: Jake Childs gets a welcomed reissue of his still hot 'Game EP' from 2006. This record is full of retro Chicago-style tracks that showcase his signature stripped-back jackers. Side-1 features 'Good Times,' a track that starts simply but evolves with a bumping bassline, bleeps and squelches. Its choppy, jacking beats, punchy snares, gritty synths, and rolling bass create a dancefloor powerhouse, flipping midway for a roof-raising moment. On Side-2 brings 'Beat Machine,' an eerie blend of house and pop, with moody synths, growling sub-bass, and haunting vocals from Lil Prince. Included and not on the original is the new Baldov remix of 'Typical of You' which adds extra heat, making this release a strongest reissues in recent weeks.

Bad House Music (5:39)
Prog Power (6:29)
Do It (5:11)
Review: What is bad house music? Besides lazy non-objections like "it's a matter of taste", we'd go deeper and suggest bad house music is house music that doesn't respect the genre's roots (note: respecting should be defined in contrast to absolute loyalty; the two ideas are altogether different). Love Exposure's very own Chinichi shows an awareness of this distinction, laying down four tracks which only hint at the vibe of bumptious genre disrespect that some producers exhibit, without truly indulging it. "Bad" is defined secondarily here: "bad" as in devilish, seductive, charming. The title track and ensuers like 'Prog Power' and 'Do It' thus pump and kick, inducing extra fluttery come-hither eyes in the listener, by way of burly kicks, moreish trance elements and extra curvaceous synth hoots.

Review: CHKLTE is in top form with his latest release for the NRV label. First out of the blocks is 'Fallen Algorhythm' which offers a dynamic groove that melts a driving set of drums with ethereal synths. Cristi Cons's remix of it amplifies the energy levels with a pulsating bassline and slicing percussion that veers on a rave anthem and 'The Other One Follows' brings a rolling bassline and sharp percussion that you might hear at somewhere like Sunwaves. Last but not least, 'Enchanted Alley' sets a fine mood with deep basslines and hypnotic grooves ideal for late-night sets.

Review: There's a different swagger to Chris Stussy's latest release, a tracklist that's as confident as it is infectious. From the opening beat, you're drawn into a pulse that never quite lets up, carrying you through layers of deep bass and slick rhythm. It's clear this is music made for the dancefloor, but there's something else to it i a subtle energy that goes beyond the usual house formula. You can hear the growth in the artist's sound, a new level of clarity, groove, and precision that feels fresh without abandoning its roots.

Review: London/Brighton starchild Leo Christopher lays down his first EP for Murmurations after so-far forays with the likes of Blind Vision, Habits and Zingiber Audio. A hotbed of minimal tech tekkers in humanoid form, Christopher demos an adept flow, teasing his skills with the opening, natant knocks-and-bubblings of 'Pequena', shortly followed by the spits and synth swirls of 'Tubby'. The B-side brings further zoneouts in the form of 'Laidback' and 'Don't Worry About It', suggesting an easygoing turn of phrase and/or lifestyle.
