Review: A Window & A Mirror offers a deep dive into the evolution of Joan of Arc, capturing the band's early phase through Tim Kinsella's personal archives. This 132-page hardbound book, unearthed from Kinsella's grandmother's basement, features his journals, photos, and essays written in real time as the band's albums came together. It also includes the rare "Red Blue Yellow" 7", a significant artifact from a pivotal moment when Joan of Arc emerged from the ashes of Kinsella's previous band, Cap'n'Jazz. The collection provides access to the "Joan of Archive," a digital trove of over 200 demo tapes, live recordings, and musical experiments. This archive meticulously catalogs the band's development, showcasing their dedication to reinvention and collaboration with radical artists from Chicago's underground music scene. A Window & A Mirror reveals the band's journey of shape-shifting creativity, highlighting how each contributor influenced Joan of Arc's direction. It's an essential collection for fans, offering a comprehensive look at the band's intricate and evolving soundscape, ensuring that their legacy of innovative music-making is preserved and celebrated.

Review: Arther Baker's Dance Masters series continues, as the spotlight turns to another remix legend: one of the originators of the form, John Luongo. Regarded as one of the most influential DJs and mixers of his day, Luongo's many credits include remixes of Jackie Moore's 'This Time Baby', 'Vertigo / Relight My Fire' by Dan Hartman and Patti Labelle's 'Music Is My Way Of Life'. Luongo also went on to establish a production career in his own right, and his legacy is more than cemented here on this retrospective comp from Demon. This box set compiles his most striking tracks in a sixc LP compilation, as well as: a 16-page booklet; an in-depth essay from Alexis Petridis; a foreword by Arthur Baker and a rare photo album from Luongo's personal collection.

Review: One of the greatest of all the jazz pianists, the recently departed Chick Corea sounded more at home than anywhere else when playing in his Akoustic Band. Alongside Dave Weckl and John Patitucci, he intermittently dazzled crowds and even on the odd occasion took the three-piece into the studio to record new material. At the Heineken Jazzalia in 2018, Chick Corea Akoustic Band took to the stage and gave a dazzling performance. Weckl's drumming is sprightly and dynamic, Patitucci's bass playing fluid and expressive, but of course the rhythm section is just there to carry the winged delight of Corea himself, gliding across the scales and reaching new heights through every one of these treasured pieces.

Review: After their first round was such a success, Gary Crowley and Jim Lahat have been tasked with pulling together another essential collection of punk and new wave from the 70s and 80s, and you can rest assured they've done it again. There are some major, familiar names here like The Clash, The Slits and Ramones, but there's also a hell of a lot of rare delights from the likes of The Limit, The Art Attacks and The Newtown Neurotics. Musically, there's plenty of range too from spiky three-chord pub rock and punk through to Linton Kewsi Johnson and Dennis Bovell's crossover dub as Poet & The Roots. That's just a tiny overview of this mammoth six-disc set, which takes you deep into the heart of a vital, thrilling period in alternative music.

Now they're following that up with Saturday Night In San Francisco, a sequel to this landmark release painstakingly pieced together from original 16-track live session tapes by Al Di Meola and his team. Great care has been taken to capture the stunning musicianship at work from three of the all-time greats of acoustic guitar, and the album comes with a new essay and never-before-seen photos which deepens the experience for anyone wishing to celebrate raw musicality at its best.

Review: Ella Fitzgerald, the First Lady of Song, and legendary jazz guitarist Joe Pass reunited for their second duet album, Fitzgerald & Pass... Again, originally released in 1976. This collaboration has become a jazz classic, with Fitzgerald winning the 1977 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album for her performance. Fitzgerald's impeccable musicianship shines through, showcasing her unparalleled ability to convey the essence of a lyric. Pass complements her perfectly, displaying his virtuosity and strength as an accompanist. The album features four Duke Ellington classics, reimagined versions of 'Tis Autumn' and 'Tennessee Waltz,' and mesmerising wordless performances of 'Rain' and ''One Note Samba.' This 180-gram reissue by Analogue Productions, cut from existing metal parts mastered by Doug Sax from the original analog master tape and pressed at Quality Record Pressings, ensures optimal sound quality. The album is housed in a single pocket Stoughton Printing tip-on jacket.

Review: Toronto besties Gremlinz and Jesta have been plotting, scheming and collaborating their entire adult lives - off and on - and releasing together consistently since 2018, but The Lee Garden Historical Preservation Society is their most significant creation to date. An ice cold web of tales and textures that digs deep into drum & bass music's most uncompromising and future-focused aesthetics, over 13 tracks they dig deep into a range of influences - techno ('Andromeda'), jungle ('Destro') and elements of grunge and trip hop on cuts such as 'Vermin' and 'After Dinner Coffee Face' are all in the mix but they forever keep the sonics tight and consistent. Metalheadz through and through.

Review: While he may have released a multitude of singles since making his debut on Metalheadz way back in 1995, "Full Circle" is only James Spratling AKA J Majik's second album (his debut full-length, "Slow Motion", was released in 1997). It's a fitting title, all told, because the majority of the ten tracks on offer recall the kind of punchy-but-dreamy jungle/early D&B fusion that marked out Spratling's earliest releases. That means a succession of killer cuts that wrap deep space chords, ambient synths and heady electronic melodies around bustling, jungle style breakbeats and booming, mind-altering basslines. It's a giddy, unashamed blast from the past, but one that's certainly in keeping with the D&B scene's current wave of misty-eyed nostalgia.

Review: OK, wow. We cannot believe it has been 10 years since Niclas Jaar's impressive Space Is Only Noise album. At the time he was a young buck, dallying in house and techno but clearly always about sp much more. The cover of this record finds the young artist in a buggy in no-mans-land next to the Berlin wall and that's a fine metaphor for his musical style. It's filled with samples, found sounds, delicate piano playing and is suited to the late night hours, where time slows down and deep thought takes over. It sounds as usual and unique now as it did back then.

Review: The Prism is an aluminum cube, small enough to fit in your palm. It was designed by Nicolas Jaar as a new medium for releasing music. The first release - CSA001 - features 12 (mostly) unreleased songs from Jaar and other Clown & Sunset collaborators.

The Prism is a piece of art in and of itself; its contents beg to be shared. Twin headphone outlets encourage connections to the object and between the 2 listeners. The Prism tries to restore physicality to the listening experience. The medium and the method are as important as the music itself. The Prism makes you consider how the music is being heard, the way the object feels in your hands, and its potential to foster intimacy between listeners. When the Prism is unplugged, a beam of light passes through the empty center, revealing a void. Someone is missing.

Review: Reissued and remastered for 'extreme sound quality', Joe Jackson's 'Body And Soul' finally gets the look back it deserves. Named ironically after Johnny Green's classic American jazz standard of the same name, Jackson's music at this point wasn't straight-up jazz, but rather jazz-intoned pop and latin, carefully constructed to only merely allude to the style. And than whirling uninventively through standards, too, the solo vocal wizard here crafts his own songs, from the sultry buzz of 'Loisaida' to the drum-clattering, brass-bursty hit single, 'The Verdict.'

This 1961 collaboration between vibraphonist Milt Jackson and saxophonist John Coltrane captures a moment of perfect synergy between two jazz giants. The mix of Jackson's melodic vibraphone and Coltrane's improvisational saxophone gives tracks like 'Bags & Trane' and 'Three Little Words' a deep, infectious groove. The interplay between the ensembleifeaturing Hank Jones on piano and Paul Chambers on bassicreates a tight, flowing rhythm that effortlessly swings. 'Blues Legacy' pays homage to the blues tradition while 'The Night We Called It A Day' reveals the group's sensitivity, with each solo capturing a different facet of emotion. This release is a remarkable reflection of their collaborative genius.

Review: Emerald City Nights: Live at the Penthouse (1966-1968) is the third release of previously unissued recordings of the iconic pianist Ahmad Jamal captured live at the hallowed Penthouse jazz club in Seattle, WA, between 1966-1968, with bassist Jamil Nasser and drummer Frank Gant. Produced for release by "Jazz Detective" Zev Feldman, and supervised by Jamal himself, these recordings were transferred from the original tape reels and mastered for vinyl by the legendary Bernie Grundman. This deluxe 180-gram 2xLP gatefold set includes an extensive booklet with rare photos by Don Bronstein, Chuck Stewart, and others; essays by producer Zev Feldman, journalist Eugene Holley, Jr., radio DJ and original recording engineer Jim Wilke, son of the Penthouse owner, Charlie Puzzo Jr., and Joe Alterman; and interviews with pianists Les McCann, Monty Alexander and Emmet Cohen.

It is a record that takes you deep into intricate rhythms and soulful melodies all of which make for immersive atmospheres that take you into all new realms. Review: With a streak of hits reaching back to the early 90s, chart-topping Brit funk phenomenon Jamiroquai have got plenty to celebrate. In 2006 they decided to remind everyone how much heat they've gifted to the world with High Times, a definitive overview of the singles that thrust them onto prime time radio and beyond. Now that compilation makes its way to vinyl for the first time, giving us the chance to spin such classics as 'Too Young To Die', 'Virtual Insanity' and 'Canned Heat' to our hearts content - all killer, no filler. This particular edition has been pressed up on green marbled vinyl and comes with and autographed art card, insert and a slipmat, making it a must-have for collectors and die-hard fans alike.

Review: 30 years ago in August, Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro, Stephen Perkins and Eric Avery aka Janes Addiction put out their second album. It proved the most critically acclaimed and successful of all their work and in fact was their last for 13 years. Few other alternative rock albums have ever come close to the impact of the one. Fact fans will know, of course, the original record came with three different covers, and might also have read that the tortuous recording process behind the album is what eventually lead to the group's demise.

Review: You have to hand it to Japan - the English new wave band, not the country. Despite only having released two (admittedly very successful) albums before 1979's Quiet Life, the group really knew what they wanted by this point. So much so they enlisted the legendary disco creator Giorgio Moroder to produce standalone single 'Life In Toyko', setting out a new stylistic blueprint moving from glam rock to synth, only to drop the revered producer before hitting the studio to make this record.

In the end that duty fell on Paul Hunter (Roxy Music, Slade) and Simon Robert Napier-Bell (Ultravox, Marc Bolan), and the result was a Gold record selling well over 100,000 copies upon release. Now forming the centrepiece for this epic special edition box set, which boasts a host of remixes, live versions and Moroder's take on 'Life In Tokyo', you'd be crazy to miss out.

Review: Pianist and composer Keith Jarrett's fame stems in large part from his many solo piano improvisations, performed regularly since the early 1970s. Solo Concerts: Bremen/Lausanne is a recording of two such concerts, held in Germany and Switzerland in 1973; originally released as a 3xLP by ECM Records, it now comes reissued and remastered via ECM. This live compilation flaunts Jarrett's emotional range, spanning everything from lyrical melodies to dissonant clusters, from rhythmic grooves to abstract soundscapes. The album was a critical and commercial success, winning the DownBeat award for the best jazz recording of the year in 1974, and establishing Jarrett as a leading figure in the solo piano genre.

There are an awful lot of great records in the J Dilla's catalogue, but few can match the consistent quality and coherent construction of Welcome 2 Detroit, his 2001 breakthrough album. Designed as a love letter to his home city with a sample palette and blend of styles to match, it saw the late producer and a string of then largely unknown local MCs showcase their vocal talents over some of his best ever beats. This lusciously expansive 20th anniversary box set does a brilliant job in expanding on the original album, with the 12 included "45s" pairing vocal mixes with instrumentals, unreleased cuts and occasional remixes. The included hardback book is brilliant, too, and packed with first-hand accounts of the creation of a now iconic LP.

Review: Japan's hard working P-Vibe label sure knows how to unearth the treasure when it comes to hip-hop and jazz. Jazz Liberatorz's Clin d'oeil long player sure does fall into that category as it is one of the slickest and coolest French records you will have heard in a long time. It's a sublimely laidback mix of jazz and hip-hop that has an irresistible underlying groove. Warm keyboards rolling along with well-designed beats define most tunes with guest spots from the likes of J Sands, Lizz Fields, Sadat X, Apani B Fly, Fat Lip, and T Love. This is a must-cop for jazz and hip-hop heads.

Review: Jazz Liberatorz are in focus at the superb Japanese label P-Vibe right now as two of their albums are dropping on the same day. As well as 2007's Clin D'Oeil comes this one, Fruit of the Past, originally from back in 2007. The band is made up of three beatmakers who originated from Meaux in France and were formed in 1999. DJ Damage, Dusty and Madhi a.k.a. Ben all have serious hip-hop chops with plenty of lush jazz instrumentals, alluring bars and catchy rhymes. This one has been reissued a couple of times before now and is one that always flies off the shelves. Do not miss.

Review: Enja Records was founded in Munich in the early 70s by jazz devotees Matthias Winckelmann and Horst Weber. Given a co-sign by the always on-point BBE and IF Music founder Jean-Claude, the label is now enjoying a retrospective compilation which seeks to celebrate the best of their golden years. Featuring performances by John Stubblefield, Bobby Hutcherson, Harold Land, Don Cherry, Cecil McBee and Pharoah Sanders collaborator Marvin Hannibal Peterson to name but a few, this collection provides a great jumping-off point for Enja's rich and diverse back catalogue. It may only be an introduction to a vast pool of music, but it's curated with authority by a dedicated head, so you know you're getting a shortcut to the best the label has to offer.

Review: Mondo, in collaboration with Sony Music and the Jeff Healey estate, delivers a definitive edition of the Road House soundtrack, featuring the full breadth of The Jeff Healey Band's contributions to the iconic 1989 film. Unlike previous releases, which contained only a fraction of the band's performances, this album features all 12 songs recorded and performed by the band in the film, including seven previously unreleased tracks. Painstakingly restored by Roger Costa and the Jeff Healey estate, this release serves as a tribute to Healey's extraordinary talent and the enduring legacy of Road House. The accompanying eight-page booklet, curated by Costa, offers comprehensive liner notes and oral history, complemented by never-before-seen behind-the-scenes photos from Healey's estate and images by Peter Sorel. With package design and layout by Mo Shafeek, this release is a great package of Healey's music and the cult-classic film. It celebrates both Healey's incredible contributions and the lasting impact of Road House, offering listeners a deeper version of the film's unforgettable soundtrack.

Review: Jefferson Airplane's performance at Woodstock was a standout moment amidst the festival's chaos. Initially slated for a Saturday night headlining slot, the band didn't take the stage until 7:00 AM Sunday due to weather delays and a massive crowd. Despite the challenges and exhaustion, they delivered an electrifying two-hour set with guest pianist Nicky Hopkins. Grace Slick's spirited introduction led into a dynamic rendition of 'The Other Side of This Life,' setting the tone for an adventurous performance. The setlist included hits like 'White Rabbit' and 'Somebody to Love,' alongside new tracks from the yet-to-be-released Volunteers album, including a 21-minute 'Wooden Ships.' Despite the subpar documentary footage that excluded them from the iconic Woodstock film, Real Gone Music now offers Jefferson Airplane's complete performance on a 3-LP set. Housed in a striking double-gatefold jacket with photos by Henry Diltz and liner notes by Richie Unterberger, this iridescent 'clouds breaking' blue vinyl release solidifies their place among Woodstock's legendary acts like Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone, and Santana.

Review: American power-pop group Jellyfish are celebrating their short but incredible career with an extremely limited one-time press run box set. This new box set features all six UK singles, pulled from the two albums - 1990's 'Bellybutton' and 1993's 'Spilt Milk' - (including the 4-track 'Scary-Go-Round' EP) which are pressed on multi-coloured 7" vinyl. Additionally, a unique bonus 7" featuring two covers, one of which is 'Think About Your Troubles', a tribute to Harry Nilsson, recorded by Roger Manning Jr and Andy Sturmer in February 1994, a few weeks after Nilsson's death ("it was the last thing Jellyfish did as a group", Roger recalls).

The audio has all been remastered especially for vinyl and as well as the singles in picture sleeves, this box set includes a 64-page booklet with detailed track-by-track guides from Roger Manning Jr, Jason Falkner, Chris Manning, Tim Smith, Eric Dover and band members and a newly written essay by Maura Johnston. The booklet is packed with previously unseen photographs, rare memorabilia and promotional items.

Review: This album marks the first time an Eel River show has made it to vinyl. Co-produced by Bill Graham Presents and the Hog Farm, this unique performance offered a refreshing departure from Jerry Garcia's typical urban venues. The show featured Garcia's quintessential band-Gloria Jones, John Kahn, David Kemper, Jacklyn LaBranch and Melvin Seals-and captured the essence of their signature sound. Fans from all over the country gathered in the heart of the Emerald Triangle for this historic performance which became an iconic moment in the Jerry Garcia Band's legacy. A must-have for collectors, then.

Review: In celebration of its 40th Anniversary, Jethro Tull's 1982 album The Broadsword and the Beast is celebrated in a mammoth 5xCD+3xDVD set. With new mixes from Steven Wilson - as well as myriad demos, rough mixes, live recordings and sessions from 1981 - this reissue serves as a due reminder of the pioneering synth-folk opus, a new sonic dimension no doubt provided by the additon of keyboardist Peter-John Vettese to the ranks. Not the first artists to mix rock with fantasy imagery, admittedly, but this fusion does make this, their 14th album, one of the band's best too.

Review: Bursting Out, Jethro Tull's debut live album sees the band at the height of their powers in 1978. This reissue on 3 pieces of vinyl revitalizes one of the most dynamic live recordings of the 70s. The album showcases the classic lineup of Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, John Evan, John Glascock, Barriemore Barlow, and David Palmer, delivering a diverse setlist that spans their prolific first decade. Recorded during their European tour, Bursting Out features powerful renditions of tracks like 'Aqualung,' 'Thick As A Brick,' and 'Locomotive Breath,' alongside deep cuts like 'No Lullaby' and 'Sweet Dream.' The energy and musicianship shine throughout, with Anderson's flute improvisations and Barlow's drum solos adding unique flair. The live versions often surpass the studio originals, offering a raw and electrifying experience. With its excellent sound quality and representative tracklist, Bursting Out shines with Jethro Tull's live talent and remains a classic of 70s rock.

Review: If we were to tell you that the original touring show for this now slightly more than 40 year old Jethro Tull album featured a stage built to resemble a Viking longship and the band performing in medieval costume, your reaction would very much give us a good indication of whether you were likely to enjoy the LP itself. Coming, in 1982, as the band hit a serious crossroads, with singer Ian Anderson wanting to embrace new synth technology and others favouring sticking to the traditional prog/rock/folk triptych that had been so successful in the previous decade, it's actaully more modern in places than its sleeve suggests, with 'Watching Me Watching You' in particular showing the influence of Peter Gabriel's first solo albums and standing the test of time well. With a heap of extras, including a heap of contemporaneous live recordings from Germany, the Tull completist will be donning their viking helmet at the merest sniff of it.

Review: UK based musical collective Jilk have made a name for themselves as specialists of a particular type of understated electronica. Some, including their own members, have compared it to the sound of a haunted bedroom, which kind of makes sense. It's intimate, there's a deeply humanistic and acoustic bent to the work, and so much tangible atmosphere you can sense the spirits surrounding each arrangement.
Syrup House is no exception to the rule, but we do find the gang bringing elements of analogue house to the fore, and merging this to great effect with dream pop and tender instrumentation. Deep, immersive music that is at once playful yet thoughtful, reflective but forward thinking, and - at times - surprisingly dance floor ('128 Rushes', for example). A quiet epic, for want of phrasing that feels a little less cliched.

Review: Joe Strummer & The Mescaleros played live at London's Acton Hall in 2002. A decade later after circulating amongst fans as a bootleg recorded direct from the mixing desk, it officially arrived on Record Store day and now it comes again. The concert was a benefit for striking firefighters and was one of the very last live performances of Strummer. Plenty of the songs he recorded first with The Clash feature next to songs from his own Hellcat Records albums as well as new at the time cuts like 'Coma Girl.'

Review: Released in 2000, Poison is the third studio album by Swedish singer-songwriter Jay-Jay Johanson, having earned his place as a stalwart figure thanks to his melancholic vocals set to perspirant trip hop. From 'Believe in Us' to 'Colder,' not to mention the toxicologist's favourite 'Poison,' we're met again with Johanson's signature downtempos and experientially charged lyrics. Sophisticated atmospherics abound, bridging the all-to-intimate gap between sexuality and the unknown.

Review: A three LP collection of collaborations between John Foxx (of Ultravox fame) and Harold Budd: arguably the world's most famous ambient/avant -garde music composer. Budd and Foxx had long been engaged by each other's work, eventually working together in 1996. These two discs are a record of those sessions, entitled Translucence and Drift Music, which were originally released in 2003, while Nighthawks was completed in 2011, along with minimalist composer Ruben Garcia. The latter is dedicated to Garcia, who sadly passed away in 2013. John Foxx has said that Budd personally recommended Garcia's music, a rare compliment from such an accomplished musician. Moreover, he described the late pianist as 'a truly independent and idiosyncratic artist.'

The New York Dolls guitarist Johnny Thunders wrote the album just before his passing in 1991 when the years of living hard and fast finally caught up with him. It's an authentic rock record steeped in bluesy guitars and impassioned vocals. This reissue comes on red vinyl and includes a bonus clear 7" with The Courettes mix of 'You Can't Put Your Arms Around A Memory' and two other cuts.

Review: In 1980, Grace Jones turned her back on the disco scene with which she'd previously been associated and headed to Compass Point studios in Nassau. Under the supervision of legendary dub players Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, and with Wally Badarou lending a hand on keyboards, the iconic model-turned-singer recorded Warm Leatherette, an album of reggae and synth-pop-infused cover versions. This deluxe, re-mastered 4LP reissue features the original full-length on two LPS, plus two further slabs containing 12" versions and alternate reworks of classics such as "Love Is The Drug" and "Private Life". It's perhaps this, more than the hit-and-miss original album, which makes this version of Warm Leatheratte so desirable.

Norah's favorite collaborations from 2001-2010 into one amazing
collection: legends like Ray Charles, Willie Nelson and Herbie Hancock,
rock artists ranging from Foo Fighters to Ryan Adams to Belle and
Sebastian, hip hop luminaries OutKast, Q-Tip and Talib Kweli. No
matter the genre however, Norah's enchanting voice is the common
denominator and while the partners are varied, she ends up owning
every song and this album is a wonderful collection that holds together
brilliantly. The album is a testament to Norah's status as one of the most
in-demand and tasteful musical connectors in music. This album will
be an amazing gift item for any Norah fan and will be hard to miss this
holiday season and then again for Valentine's Day.

Review: Whether or not The Last of the Mohicans would have been made in the same way today comes down to opinion. Back in 1992, all Hollywood wanted was to present historical epics that felt new while still being familiar, and to hell with anyone that might have a problem with the very white Daniel Day Lewis being cast as an indigenous American Indian living in a period of time when lands that belonged to those communities were being stolen by, err, people who didn't look too dissimilar from DDL himself.

More naive, or at least less woke times, in truth the movie is a great adventure-packed romp across the West filled with action, tension, incredible cinematography panning over seemingly endless wilderness and this score by Trevor Jones and Randy Edelman. Sounding exactly as it should - a mixture of grit, determination, and grandeur rendered with woodwind, strings, and huge percussive sections, it remains one of the movie's triumphs.

Review: Jon Thor Birgisson (Sigur Ros) and his partner Alex Somers make brain cleansing and heavenly ambient as Jonsi & Alex. 10 years ago they put out cult classic "Riceboy Sleeps" and to mark the anniversary the whole album has been lovingly remastered across six slabs of wax. Taking the time to do nothing but sit back and sink deep into this album is a pleasure you will thank yourself for: its pastoral synths slowly wash over you while muted pads gently unfold, evolve and evaporate as barely-there voices from the Kopavogsdaetur Choir come in and out of focus next to smeared strings from Icelandic quartet Amiina. Perfection.
