Review: The Nils Frahm-fronted Nonkeen have taken the R&S fanbase by surprise thanks to their debut album The Gamble. While the imprint has been heavily associated with contemporary techno and driving post-dubstep over the last five years, Nonkeen seems like a breath of fresh air, and also the perfect way to meander into different sorts of sounds and genres. "Animal Farm" and "Chasing God Through Palmyra" are taken from the debut album for easier DJ playback; the former is a murky, dubbed-out lo-fi drum jam that has more in common with African Head Charge than Gilles Peterson, and the latter carries that same kind of jab-ridden spirit through to a more stable strain of pseudo 4/4 that'll work wonders in the midst of a wide-eyed house set. A truly recommended piece of work from the label.

Review: Prolific multi-media artists Damon Locks and Rob Mazurek are long time creative partners but this is their first ever collaborative project. New Future City Radio is a busy 40-minute suite cut into 18 tracks that are all short but hugely potent and play out like a well-sequenced mixtape. Across the playtime they contemplate "community, transformation, and the future through the programmatic format of a pirate radio station for the people." They have worked together since the late 90s so have rare chemistry and prove that and then some here.

Review: NT is Nail aka Neil Holliday, one half of Bent and a master of UK tech house. But here he shows a different side across six majestically Balearic groovers. That draw on everything he has done before to send you out to sea on gentle waves of shining synth goodness, downtempo bliss and dreamy, chubby, soft focus drums. 'Beside Boa Linn' is a soothing summer sound to kick off then 'Going Out To Feel It' is a spiritual house cut for sundown, and 'Don't Hide Away' is slow motion disco brilliance. The trip continues with the star-gazing 'Evening Fixture', Eddie C style guitar licks of 'Walk In Romance' and romantic lullaby 'Dreams On Hold.'

Review: The late legendary Japanese beatmaker Nujabes was a musical genius, this we know to be true. His constant resurgence on social media throughout the years affirms this, with 'Modal Soul', his second full-length album in 2005, blowing up time and time again online. It comes as no surprise, his meticulous devotion to hip-hop-jazz was unlike any before him, or since. 'Other Side of Phase' is a 12" three track record, with its title track being the instrumental for the famous anime 'Samurai Champloo', originally featuring one of Japan's most prolific MCs to ever hold the mic. A standout is 'Rainyway Back Home', a fly song combining the keys from an old Jeru the Damaga cut and the drums from a Power of Zeus track. Nujabes will never - ever - go out of style.

Review: Jim Sharp & Nick Bike are two of Canada's finest beat makers and here they turn their attention to the legendary Marvin Gaye. His 'Inner City' from the timeless What's Going On album gets a modern update from Jim Sharp that retains the soulful vocal of the original but with new drums. They're crisp and tight but funky, and the bendy chords and melodic motifs flesh it out. On the reverse is a Power Mix by Nick Bike that ups the weight and stomp of the drums and layers in the wordless ad libs from the original to bring the soul.

Review: One of the delights of being a music fan is coming across unlikely, little-known recordings that thrill, confuse and inspire in equal measure. This collaboration between German musician/producer FS Blumm and neo-classical pianist Nils Frahm is one of those recordings. Seemingly patched together from a number of jam sessions, it's largely made up of overlapping blasts of Reichian style piano and fluent acoustic guitar. Yet there are also odd, scratchy effects, found sound, effects aplenty and even the odd dash of white noise. It's hard to describe, and certainly arty, but it largely sounds great. It's certainly a hugely enjoyable listen.

Review: Here's a heavyweight package for jazz-loving tech heads to get inspired by. Billy Cobham, surely one of the greatest jazz fusion drummers of all time, gives his excellent Drum N' Voice series over to some scene-leading electronic innovators to remix, rework or simply pay untold respect to. You can sense Ricardo Villalobos and Max Loderbauer were in full reverential mode when they delivered their stunning, viscerally live version of "Stratus". Lexx brings the smooth funk to "Sensations", MCDE drops some feel-good vibes on "Shining Sun", and Khidja gets nicely wigged-out over "Psychologic". What's not to love about a fusion project like this one?

Review: Back in 2011, Nicolas Jaar joined forces with fellow Clown & Sunset contributor Dave Harrington for the Darkside EP, an impressive trio of untitled tracks that pitted the formers scratchy, near-paranoid production style against the latter's penchant for lo-fi indie-rock inspired fuzziness. Here, the duo dusts down the Darkside alias once more for a first collaborative album. Predictably, it's an impressive set, offering a collection of downtempo tracks that shuffle between crackly, out-there atmospherics ("Sitra", reminiscent of much of Jaar's Space is Only Noise album), echo-laden alt-rock experimentalism ("Heart") and heart-aching fragility (the James Blake-ish "Greek Light").

Review: Nina Simone's Little Girl Blue album is one of her most acclaimed. It's packed with her archetypal blues, jazz and soul sound so you can understand why Dutch producer DJ Maestro jumped at the chance to remix it. He hasn't take on the sizeable task alone, however, as he's enlisted the likes of The Reflex (who releases frequently on Kon's label), Suonho, Mop Mop, Renegades of Jazz, Gramophonedzie, Fab Samperi and Mees Dierdorp. Much of the original material is easily recognisable, but is packaged in subtle beats, happy jazz or sympathetic neo-soul that feels somehow right and fitting.

Review: Dutchman Martijn Barkhuis aka DJ Maestro is one of the most renowned DJs of the electro-jazz scene, having produced nine albums for the prestigious Blue Note Records, as well as for Verve and Bethlehem in New York. He and some specially selected guests turned their deft hands at remixing the first album of the legendary Nina Simone back in 2015, which receives a much needed repress here courtesy of Music On Vinyl. Of the many fine moments on Little Girl Blue (Remixed), we were particularly into The Reflex's respectful edit of 'My Baby Just Cares For Me', Maestro himself gets in on the action on his rework of the famed title track and Smoove gets ultra deep for the late night on his rendition of 'African Mailman'.

Review: Thievery Corporation veteran Eric Hilton is on a roll with his Montserrat House label, operating out of DC and adding new layers to his considerable legacy in downtempo sounds. As was teased by the 'Amor Astral' single from 2023, this new album finds Hilton working closely with long time Thievery collaborator, Argentinian singer Natalia Clavier. Her coolly soulful tone hovers over the buttery funk jams Hilton lays down, where the drums are tight and crisp and the basslines wrap themselves around the groove with snake-like grip, all the better to sink into when you need a little chill-out time from a certified master of the art.

Review: For sensitivity and naturalism in experimental music, Gosha Martynov & Natasha Sinyakova seize the crown with their new album Imena Rek. On their first foray into the physical, the duo expand the spectral ambience and medicated breaks of their earlier work with lithe touches of organic jazz and Cafe Del Mar cool, creating a complex assemblage of dreamy downbeat and emotive electronica that's entirely easy on the ears. The record is an ever-evolving, life-giving slough; we wade through many restorative swamps, each bearing its own sonic, ecosystemic character. The fen's mouth stretches open wide on 'Pozhaluysta', tempting the listener with an open-skied siren song set to skittish drum pats, while things grow hazier from 'Osvobodi Menia' and thereafter; the trip-hop influence is almost entirely naturalised, shedding the genre's usual rough-edged clicks and pops for a preferential sawn-off, willowy sound, that retains its smoothness even in moments of irresolution and tension, as on 'Rany'. And the slow mangrove whirl 'Iskra' really flaunts the pair's talents, with beautifully played pan flutes, and resonant silicate rustles, convoking a new hallowed ground; we wind up mentally clutching at damp mosses, imagining ourselves laid arrest in a sodden but warm bayou, as we're serenaded by two Armenian-American master musicians.

A lush, immediately alluring collection that deftly swoons and sweeps between ambient pop, lushtronica, experimental chill, and sound art, stepping inside these sounds is like wandering through strange dreamscapes, places of loose motifs, more defined by overriding atmosphere than specific details.

Review: Shapes and Colours is the first album to have been produced at Jazzaggression's Pelto Studio in Siuntio, Finland and is exactly what a proper album should be - a real journey. It is a mix of funky synthesized jazz with gorgeous melodies and life-affirming musical moods that mange to sound as full of hope and optimism as the dawn of a new spring day. Behind it all is the highly acclaimed Estonian composer and musician Tonu Naissoo who has a worldwide reputation for his composition and performance skills and he shows them all off here. Various classic synths and a Rhodes MK2 form the foundation of these sounds with an in house studio group providing drums, bass, reeds and flutes.

Two of his works feature here with changing acoustics, different melodies and gentle grooves conveying the evolving weather. The sounds have been made with various materials and instruments such as acoustic guitar, bass, sampling and chorus. It's a widescreen and immersive album where harmony and nostalgia happily coexist.

Review: Humble folk compositions from Haruka Nakamura, a longtime fixture of the Tokyo singer-songwriter scene. From the outset, we can almost instantly tell the theme of Nakamura's 2018 album Grace: it's a waltzing meditation on daily life and lightly passed time - and our research proves this to be correct, with the album having been made carefully over three parts of a daily cycle. A crude but elegant blend of lo-fi elements, glorious soprano vocals and rough samplework make for an emotionally wide-ranging listen, from the outset of 'every day' to the closing 'cadenza'.
