Review: This is a four-track sampler taken from parts one and two of the One Hundred and Fifty Steps VEP series which is all about exploring the rise of 150 bpm dubstep, a sound that characterised by fast basslines, broken rhythms and heavy halftime pulses. From VEP pt. 1, L.A.'s Carre delivers pacey wobblers and then Berlin's Formella debuts with playful breaks and more wobbly bass on 'Dripstep'. VEP pt. 2 features Leipzig's Old Man Crane with their intricate, syncopated style shinning through on 'Grey' and Valencia's Andrae Durden then shows class with a Kryptic Minds-inspired low-end powerhouse.

First up is a three-way collab between Citybox, Hankook & Orebeat whose 'Dangerous Changes' is an intense breakbeat workout for the peak time. Orebeat & Alex Clubbers keep the energy levels high and inject early 00s video-game style synths, Orebeat & Citybox keep it dark and raw with 'Gangsta' and Orebeat & JottaFrank laced up their thrilling breaks with acid lines and sleazy vocals on "Noche De Paris.' This is potent stuff for strobe-lit floors.

Review: After years spent serving up tasty, digital-only singles, Polish imprint That's Right Dawg Music finally makes its vinyl bow via a six-track mini-album featuring some of their most-checked catalogue cuts. Demarkus Lewis kicks things off via the carefully crafted disco-house release of 'TGIF', before Federfunk slams down the jazz-sampling peak-time punchiness of 'We Keep It Groovin' and Jazzmik offers up the funky deep house bounce of 'Get Him Outta Here'. Over on the reverse, Oggie B cannily combines mind-mangling electronic stabs, pumping beats and orgasmic vocal samples ('Steady Old Foot'), Makson makes great use of vintage rap and disco guitar samples on the energy-packed house thump of 'Last Man Standing', and Casserta and Jonny C join forces on the bass-heavy garage-house bump of 'Party #1'.

Review: The undeniably wonderfully named Chippy Chasers label return with a neat selection of four very playable, friendly-on-the-ear cuts from four undeniably wonderful artists. Fedo's 'Tunisian Rex' leads the chage, with a solid house shuffle liberally peppered with nicely trippy effects and bonkers vocal snippets that give it heaps of personality. Andrey Djackonda & Ovil's 'Lui Lui' is a little more stripped down and a little more soulful, with an old jazz hand muttering atmosphercially on top. Legit Trip's 'Skripi Daddy' is the most loop-laden of the quartet, but its ebbing and flowing brass samples and high frequency tweaks keep it interesting, before Firesc's 'Left Or Right' closes things down with the kind of polyrhythmic funkiness and space jazz trimmings that made Cheap Records so essential back in the day. Well worth Chasing down.

Review: Mark Knight's epic Toolroom label returns with a four-track sampler featuring plenty more big-room house excursions. First up, the boss himself offers up an extended mix of Groove Armada's legendary 'Get Down' which is full of rave stabs and big vocals. Illyus & Barrientos offer the synth laced and peak time sounds of 'When You Gonna' and David Penn & Offiah combine for the supersized piano house rollercoaster that is 'Satisfied' complete with big hooky vocals. Last of all comes Ben Remember's 'Waiting 4 You' (extended mix) which ducks and dices with some smart filters, chopped-up vocal stabs and raw percussive house energy.

Review: Four new prangers from France's BOOOoo! crew, startling our ears with audio-apparitions by ghosts of the resident French sceno-system: Jamahr, Mooglee, Jucid and Odeon. 'Black Loops' and 'Flex (Booty Mix)' invade elastic terrains of bass and flicky synth, churn them back through meshes of gradated beats and rond-squelching stab notes. 'The Question Is' eliminates much of the A-side's establishing layers and overdubs, harking rubbery and slip-tastic FX design, countered by the equally sticky 'Jimbeldance'.

Review: These tracks have received some huge hype just from the plays they have been getting from DJs luckily enough to have them. Now they finally get a vinyl pressing so the rest of us can join in the fun. First up is a three way collab between a trio of well-regarded artists in the UK drill rapper Kwengface, master bass producer Joy O and techno's Overmono. 'Freedom 2' has cut-throat rhymes and two-step garage influences with low-end subs which will destroy the club. The original version features on the flip with a less club-ready and more drill-centric sound.

Minimal House/Tech House
Review: Future Tones hear producers Luis Malon and Omar drop two utter floor-heaters respectively, not holding back for a second in their admission that these are 'Tracks From The Future'. Malon's 'Freeze' and 'Flesh Is Stronger' are surprisingly (at least for a pair of time-travelling tracks) humanistic statements, bringing belligerent bangout beats, rapturously Reesing rhapsodies and even G-funk whistles to a driving pair. Omar's flips are much more vintage, moving seemingly laterally in dimension rather than linearly in time, and finding solace in a more neo-retro-modern vision of the future; 'Niusing' especially entices with its cascader twinkles and sawwing bursts.

Review: Hotmix deliver another two-track slaying from an aliased ambassador of the label itself, this time the first edition in the new 'Obscure Bad Dreams' series. An homage to Sauro Cosimetti (the Italian house and techno mastermind whose credits include releases on Frequenza, Natura Viva and Beatfreak), six acolytes of the artist bring six, discoic house hosing-downs to the table. Most exciting among the selections are the lively African trad chanter 'The Beginning', the dreamy soulful house 'Inflight' by Rohan Delano, and Montano Orchestra's freestyle-inspired dub-electro-disco 'Tribal Love Beats' version of their own 'Esto Parese Amor'.

Review: Objectiv returns to Flexout with a brand new single that blurs the boundary between rollage and jump-up. With the former term referring to drum & bass that keeps things on the subtler side - keeping things moving on a furtive tip rather than over-shelling or shredding via tawdry sound design - 'Seasoned' is a well-spiced fusion with the latter, which refers to a snappier form of the genre known for its 'jumpy' sound. Review: Obscure Shape is impressing plenty of techno fans with his solo work since leaving his long-standing partnership and now for the first time following that move, he lands on Clergy. 'Elemental' opens up with lithe, hurried techno energy that is topped with sparse hits and backed with suspenseful pads. 'Die Huter Des Lichts' then cuts a little more loose in its lops with a frazzled lead taking centre stage and spraying about wildly. Opening up the B-side is a collaboration with his pal Parallx. Their 'Im Lauf Der Zeit' is pure Motor City machine music with raw soul. 'Seiten Des Lebens' then gets more textural and tense and 'Der Pfad' closes down with some glitchy drum patterns and dubby low ends.

Review: This is some serious electro that really packs a punch. It is both physical and cerebral, with as much to keep the old noggin entertained as there is for the feet and body. The EP marks a fine return to Gunfinger Food for Obzerv who offers up his first solo vinyl release with tracks taken from some of his previous live set performances. They make for pure machine funk, with tough and robotic bass and lithe synth designs from the future. This is a one-time-only press on wax, so do not sleep.

The artist taps into a fresh tech and minimal sound from the off with 'Behind The Walls' spinning out on disco stabs and phased basslines. The kinetic 'Look Around You' then pangs more prickly drum programming and spaced-out synth work with sensuous spoken words and 'Freak' layers up balmy pads and bright, shiny and sugar melodies for a nice colourful exploration. Deep House
Review: Avidya is back with a third EP to build on the head-turning success of the first two and it is another trip to the outer edges of the dancefloor. Odopt from Born Free and 777 Recordings kicks off with a snappy cut that is deceptively simple but devastatingly effective with its gurgling and acidic bass. Remotif is a fast-rising talent who impresses with the heavy techno sludge of 'HAJKSD15' and Full Circle aka Alexis Le Tan and Joakim link with Kris Baha to offer a remix that is all twitchy electrons, busted drum loops and fizzing pads before 53X's 'Simulaatio' is another brilliantly loose jumbled of wiry electronics, sci-fi effects and techno chug for a fantastic closing beatdown.

Review: Bobby Orlando is something of a hi-NRG master - his work with Divine is credited as a major influence on the Pet Shop Boys - who tapped up the then soon-to-be iconic duo Oh Romeo for their debut outing back in 1982. Review: Fantastically frisky broken beat, jazz and ambient fusions from new Vessel signee Jacob Ohrberg, with the fresh EP 'Vinyl Vanity'. Promoted simply with the tagline "deep tracks, open minds", this one's accompanied by a pensive metatext: "vinyl and physical media represent preservation acts committed in vain... the true, ever-changing form becomes frozen, an unchangeable product which serves our vanity." Evidently not bereft of social consciousness, Ohrberg spotlights the unavoidable vanity of music releasing - the megalomania, the leveraging of identity for personal gain, the sating of an irrational need for recognition - where other artists may never dare to, for fear of coming across cynical. Ohrberg is unafraid of the pratfall of vanity, assuring us there's 'No Respite' with two ten plus minute progressions in dance-soul. No matter our reservations, our idealisations, the music will keep flowing in one way or another, whether on vinyl or another medium (provided the former is proven unsustainable in due time). The digital bonus 'The Naughty Edit' brings delicious vocal chill-light, fidgeting between piano house and soul jazz, toeing the line between them so that you're not quite sure of the track's "liveness" going in.

Review: There's not much we can tell you about the identities of the "trusty producers" behind the Old Boys Vinyl Sessions project, other than that they have been making and releasing music under various aliases since the pre-MP3 days. It's easy to see why they want to avoid publicity, as what's an offer is a tasty house rework of a string-laden Blue Nile number from back in 1984. The opening 'Cloudburst Vox' wraps elements of the band's sultry, simmering original track (strings, vocals, pianos) and tech-house electronics around a locked-in house groove, while the accompanying 'Cloudburst Dub' strips out the vocals while retaining the gorgeous arrangements and druggy 21st century sounds. The extended flipside 'Torrent Vox' ramps up the strings and other picturesque sounds, inserting a simply stunning extended breakdown for good measure.

Review: Toronto vinyl label Afalinas proudly presents its debut EP 'Fin Groove', crafted by the talented Olekhar hailing from Ukraine. Taking our cue from the posterised dolphin on the front cover, we find ourselves dorsally diving into seas of tech-funk and knocky trance here. 'API Call' offers a stuttery but still measured torrent of sound, after which the ensuing fishy deluge of 'Squat Funk' turns only brackish water fully salty, fully electrolytic. The record veers increasingly gamified, with 'Bowser's Castle' working around hammy arps and contrapuntal acid squelches, and 'WLB' mixing UK bass motifs, of syncopation and verbed-out snare, with an all-out chiptune lead.

Review: A great exploration of deep house that seamlessly blending classic influences with a modern, dancefloor-driven touch. Luca Olivotto is a German producer who back in 2020 opened his own label which this EP now celebrates the tenth release or the label. The title track starts off with an infectious energyiits uplifting piano chords and driving groove create a euphoric late-night atmosphere, embodying the essence of a peak-time house anthem. 'I'm (Not) With You' follows, maintaining the momentum with a strong, party-ready groove that leans into a love for classic house rhythms and vibrant melodies. Side-2 shifts into more soulful and emotive territory. 'Don't Need To Know' delivers a warm, uplifting feel, ideal for early morning sets where the energy softens but the vibes remain high. The closing track,' Givin' All My Love', is a jazzy, atmospheric piece, wrapping up the EP with deep, melodic richness sure to put a smile on your face.

Review: Barna mainstay Oma Totem dishes out the cerebral and dubby like it's nobody's business; on 'The Trick', we hear three tripped-out accelerators courtesy of the Oyster Cult debutante themself, on which there's also an OK EG rework for good measure. It's a clever trick, naming your EP 'The Trick'; not least since it invites the would-be listener to listen more intently, lest they miss it - what is said "trick", dear Oma Totem? They won't answer this, much less dish out pure, wordless, implicative sonic shellage. Somewhere in the gap between the graver underside of acid trance and the equally deep lacunae of UK bass in the large, the likes of 'Choreos' and 'Mania' likewise add to the trick's wilful missive. In other words, we don't get a message from this music much as we do feel a vibe: in this sense, we're happy to miss the trick.

Review: Motor City great Omar S is not just a don when it comes to programming drums and laying down his irresistible synth lines and heart aching melodies. He can also play a wide array of instruments, and in fact does just that here as he plays all instruments played you can hear across all three cuts of this new one on his FXHE label. Things kick off with the wonderful 'Featuring Omar S (instrumental)' and then 'Sayoungaty Nig' is a hazy, lo-fi ambient sound with occasional synth smears and a barely-there rhythm implied by the odd kick drum sound. 'Featuring Omar S' is a signature deep house joint with bristling metal hi-hats, rickety drums and edgy drones that keep you on edge as more soulful chords rise up through the mix.

'Pollen' is a bright and hooky melodic electro sound then 'You & Me' gets more percussive, with old school cow bells staying busy next to all sorts of wonky synth work. 'Tomorrow's Made Of Breaks' is built on rigid funk and trippy synth bleeps and 'Zeus' shuts down with some retro-future vocoder vocals. This is a great return from a label we hope now pushes on.

Review: In 1985, Isy Martin Jr. released 'Rug Burns' and it became a low-key disco stepping classic. Now, Prime Time Records and Tapes has secured the rights and presents this official repress featuring that cut on the A-side so you no longer have to play high prices on the second-hand market. As well as that fresh bit of ass-shaking and funky dancefloor fun, the label has pressed a special re-do of 'Rug Burns' featuring XL Middleton and Zackey Force Funk on the B-side. It's a slightly more contemporary boogie-down sound with the same original vocal charms.

Review: Four years on from the release of the label's second missive, a rather good joint EP from Camili Gil and Rodrigo Valdivia, Spanish imprint W3ird Ltd is finally ready to drop its' third release. It comes courtesy of collaboration-loving duo ONE+1 and newcomer Cheku Garcia. Unusually, the pair's two original tracks are nestled on side B. 'La 1' is immersive, deep and surprisingly loose-limbed, with the resulting blend of machine drums, squelchy bass, chiming melodies and atmospheric chords sat somewhere between deep house and tech-house, while 'La 2' is deeper, jazzier and lightly dubbed-out - think Smallville releases and you're close. Both tracks are presented in remixed form on side A, with Steve O'Sullivan's hybrid deep house/acid house re-wire of 'La 2' being followed by Maher Daniel's glitchy and fuzzy tech-house take on 'La 1'.

Review: Troop Music Works is back with a second platter of timeless house sounds. This one from Japanese artist Masafumi Onishi takes its cues from Mid Western-house and techno of the 80s and 90s but adds a little extra Far Eastern magic. 'Heart Breaker' ha a marching beat with lush, pixelated melodies encouraging inward reflection. 'Flight To South' has lovely analogue drums and percussion a la Dream 2 Science and 'Dramatic Call' layers up flat, flappy kicks with time-keeping hi-hats and smeared vocals. The mystic vibes continue through 'Java Dream' (with Munir) and 'Afrikan South' which both bring some twinkling late-night melodic energy.

Two tracks, both equally stunning, 'Hear My Mind' opens the pair with a slow burning, jazz-influenced atmosphere builder, reversed-out harmony floating over stepping bass loop and distant ethereal vocals. Mike Garry is many things to many people, but tonight, Matthew, his voices guides our eyes upwards, inviting us to stargaze to one of Orbital's most emotionally resonant and timeless pieces of rave noise. Belfast Revisited would be one way to describe it, taking some of the classic and unmistakable elements of that anthem and turning it into something new. First and foremost freshness comes with the spoken word addition - a thoroughly positive, passionate and amorous declaration of unending love that could feel jarring depending on whether you always felt 'Belfast' was reflective and slightly melancholy, or not. Gone too are the breaks, replaced now by stadium-sized four-to-the-floor turning what was once the end of the night walking home at dawn into something that sounds way more 11PM at the concert.

Review: Ready to take a deep dive? Some long lost Orca dubs resurfaced on Deep Jungle last year and here comes the reissue. One of Kosheen co-founder Decoder's earliest projects, Orca's ripples date back to around 92 and seminal labels like Lucky Spin. Here we have a few reloads and few unreleased moments from that era. Highlights include the wonderfully rushy 'Spacetek' with its bellowing pads and springy beats and the didge-blasting wobbler 'Skylab' but the whole EP is fantastic. Have a whale of a time.

Review: Since its relaunch in 2017, Deep Jungle has been killing it by serving up previously unreleased tunes from the 90's next to represses of select rarities and new tunes in the vibe of the classic 93-96 era. Here we have Orca ensuring we all have a whale of a time (hey, hey) while lost in the precision-tooled breaks and snares, hits and lunging basslines of 'What Kind Of World.' 'Camyx' is a more trippy sound with liquid synths shimmering and raga vocals during the beatdown. 'Echoes' is a driving and physical workout with high seed loops and minimal pads.

Review: The second instalment of Brownswood Recordings' Remix Editions series features two dancefloor hitters; one from new kids on the block Izco & Reek0 and the other from sub-bass heavyweight Coki. Each producer turning their hands to a remix from a different track from Oreglo's debut EP, 'Not Real People', both efforts turn out to be massive. Izco and Reek0's version of 'Levels' opens the proceedings with a stargazing march, fusing motifs of amapiano, carnival and UK jazz. Coki's flipside is much more dubious, working in a much lower dubstep register, and filtering Oreglo's original 'Opedge' jazz instrumentation into a mnemonic groundwork for a grime-caked heater.
