Selador Decade Vol 1
Cat: SELV 008. Rel: 18 Apr 23

Minimal/Tech House
3D & Robert Owens - "Known Love" (7:51)
Olivier Giacomotto & Quivver - "Snailblazer" (6:40)
Dave Seaman & Hernan Cattaneo - "Napkin Knowledge" (7:28)
Argia & Jepe - "Salitre" (7:38)
Review: In celebration of their tenth birthday, Selador marks the occasion in style with a four-track collaborative EP, featuring tracks from 3D, Robert Owens, Olivier Giacomotto, Quivver, Dave Seaman, Hernan Cattaneo, Argia, and Jepe. The opening track, 'Known Love', is a deep, pulasting house tune that feels like an instant classic, perhaps thanks to the soulful, pop-tinged vocals - think LCD soundsystem meets Four Tet. 'Snailblazer', the second track on the EP, takes a much darker turn, with a chugging, EBM-esque feel. Full-bodied and complete with obscured vocals, this is the kind of track to pull out your bag when it's time to really get stuck in. On the B-side, 'Napkin Knowledge' draws on the glistening synths of eurodance, yet still securing the melodies to a grounded bassline and rhythm section. 'Salitre' is the perfect closing track, rising up in a gleaming, ecstatic melody, before delicately returning to ground level. A varied yet firmly cohesive collaborative release - the perfect way for Selador to kick off their 2023 catalogue.

Review: If you're unaware of Aston Harvey's influence and legacy across the entire rave spectrum do yourself a favour, press play and do a little reading. From his role in the Blapps Posse to being Ray Keith's early engineer to his decades in The Freestylers, Aston's DNA is integral to rave culture just as much as Suburban Base is. And here are four fine examples why. Teaming up with DJ Quicklung, each cut his hard with that classic jungle breakbeat sound. Highlights include the dubby tension of 'The Hangman' and the pure unabashed euphoria of 'Moving On'. Oof!

How Long

Disco/Nu-Disco
Brandye - "How Long" (4:04)
Queen Samantha - "Take A Chance" (Muro Diguma edit) (4:59)
Review: More from dusty-fingered don DJ Muro's Digura edit series. This time round, he's focused on two fabulous but often overlooked disco gems. On the A-side it's all about Brandye's punchy, funk-fuelled, disco era crossover soul cover of Ace's much-loved 1974 sing-along 'How Long' - a sublime interpretation that's easily the best version of the much-covered song we've heard. Basically, it's an energetic, impassioned version of an end-of-night classic; what's not to like? Over on the flip, Muro takes his rusty scalpel to Queen Samantha's largely instrumental, Italo-disco classic 'Take a Chance' - a spacey, synth-powered chunk of peak-time chug that has long been championed by some of the World's most knowledgeable disco DJs.

Delta - "Spy" (Nosferatu mix) (6:57)
Cabanelas - "Sambu Y Los Morsas" (6:17)
Z@p - "Yeartail" (6:10)
Justin Drake & Quinn Whalley - "Slack-Strobe" (7:55)
Review: The Alt label hits its second record with a sterling cast of wayward techno bods in tow. Things fire up in a tough and trippy manner as Delta wrings all kinds of tricky noises out of his gear and keeps the bass brooding in the low end, but hold tight for a perfectly 90s chord progression in that pad line. Cabanelas has a bleepy mission on 'Sambu Y Los Morsas' which flits between creepy passages of tension and acid tweaking drops. Z@p keeps things melancholic while adhering to the record's over-arching old-skoool outboard vibe, and then Justin Drake and Quinn Whalley sign the record off with a slice of proto trance for the deepest of 90s-tinted dancefloor reveries.

Essel - "Love Vibration" (extended mix) (5:21)

Qubiko - "Confused" (extended mix) (6:17)
Wh0 & Kideko - "Soul Searcher" (extended mix) (5:44)
Review: There's a certain brand of 4x4 deep house that utterly slapssss. And that's exactly the business Toolroom Records are in - they're simultaneous experts at throwing us back to the sprawling garage paradises, while still lending modern, buildup-drop flairs to their productions. This V/A 12" sampler from a wider comp shows off choice buts from label mainstays, Essel, Guz, Qubiko, et al., showing off the best of what Italy's poppy deep house scene has to offer.

Pumpin The Junk (5:34)
The Buzz (5:13)
Review: Hot Creations has now been rolling out the club friend, crowd pleasing jams for over a decade and well over 200 releases. But still they manage to unearth new names and potent sounds to keep people going back for more. It's Jay Farina and Quinzi who combine on two slammers here. First up is 'Pumpin The Junk', a fat-bottomed house cut with robust drum wallops, raved up horn stabs and a sleazy vocal. On the backside is a more tribal cut. 'The Buzz,' which layers up the percussion with steamy and sizzling summer intent next to a potent vocal that has got summer Ibiza classic written all over it.

Review: Map.ache and Svensol & Bender's Kann imprint has been going string since 2008, putting out a diverse mixture of dancefloor music from some of house and techno's most interesting artists. Once in a while, they like to put out some collaborative works and it's time for the second instalment of their Family Horror compilations. Plenty of fire and new faces on this one, and we're particularly digging Hiver's "Egeo", a cinematic opener with an aqueous sort of feel to it, "Kokobay" by QY and the acidic "Track 6" by Perm. Wild and multi-faced.

Mark Knight & James Hurr - "You Are A God" (feat Cari Golden) (6:16)
Qubiko - "Talking To Myself" (5:44)
Leftwing : Kody - "Mallet" (6:34)
ESSEL - "Try" (5:27)
Review: Toolroom Records are partly responsible for the recent upsurge in jackin' deep house in the early 2020's; this sampler record, the second in their compilations EP series, serves as yet another tour of their grand new deep house estate. Delusions of grandeur are expressed on 'You Are A God' - which, for a track so deitylike, measures itself with rather a lot of restraint - while 'Talking To Myself' contains a vocal sample that is so mouthy and infectious that we really are beginning to believe ourselves to have been possessed by Metatron. 'Mallet' swerves into tribal territory, while ESSEL's 'Try' could be a contender for dance-chart-topper, assuming its piano weaponry is effective enough at swaying the radio pluggers. Joyous stuff.

Quasar & Nova - "Witchcraft" (dub) (5:09)
Saule & Centauri - "Tyrant" (5:10)
Teffa & Sound Unknown - "Hide & Seek" (4:42)
Review: Dubstep doesn't get much deeper than the tunes on this meaty new Various Artists collection from 786. The title suggests it is the start of a new ongoing series, which is music to the ears of bass fiends everywhere. Mr K & DPRTNDRP kick off with 'Suppression,' with its menacing energy and churning hits, while Quasar & Nova team up for the excellent low end wobble and playful sense of funk that is deeply embedded in the rhythm of 'Witchcraft.' Saule & Centauri's 'Tyrant' is a pressurised cut with a freaky vocal and edgy synth stabs over woden hits. Sparse but atmospheric, it's just one of four killers here. The last is the drilling bass weight of Teffa & Sound Unknown's mystic 'Hide & Seek.' Great stuff.

Hadone - "Strain Relief" (5:26)
HWRD - "Mirage" (5:38)
Quelza - "Domino" (5:43)
Review: The Third Room concludes its so far excellent various artists series with a third and final instalment of yet more future-facing and heady cosmic techno. Justine Perry kicks things off with the deep space synths and paired back hypnosis of 'Diversion' while Hadone then bangs a little harder with 'Strain Relief' which has twitchy synth motifs and hard, hammering beats. HWRD's 'Mirage' is a buoyant techno bouncer with loopy synth ringlets all interacting with each other to mind-melting effect and Quelza's 'Domino' dips into deepest of dub techno territory to shut down a nice diverse EP.

Champion Sound (7:01)
Night Moves (6:34)
Review: When it comes to UK hardcore/jungle schematics, they don't come much more authoritative than Q Project's 'Champion Sound'. That growing hoover sound and iconic vocal stab and those mercenary breaks... Like Total Science's Q himself, this still tears up dancefloors almost 30 years later. As does the often overlooked B-side 'Night Moves'. Bumping and rolling in the shadow of the anthem on the a-side, this wonderfully minimalistic track highlights the power of that essential stripped back dynamic of breaks and big bulging subs - the only ingredients any good D&B track truly needs.

Champion Sound (Doc Scott remix) (6:51)
Review: The Quiffmeister goes back to his most formative era pre Total Science and reloads 'Deep Concentration', the heavily emotional and deep rolling follow-up to the seminal hardcore anthem 'Champion Sound'. Pristine breaks and those beautiful chord changes still hold firm today, this remains a seminal crossover hardcore/jungle blueprint. As does Scotty's remix of 'Champion Sound' on the B. Taking the epic rave thunder of the original and completely subverting it, this remix was another one of Doc Scott's finest operations during this period of UK dance music. Essential history.

The Voice Of Q (The Reflex Revision) (8:21)
Everybody Loves A Good Funk (The Reflex Revision) (7:20)
Review: Is there any classic cut that The Reflex can't subtly improve? Over the years, he's delivered countless killer multi-track re-edits (or as he calls them, 'Re-visions') of much-loved, million-selling gems, and you can count the number of so-so tweaks on the fingers of one hand. He's done an excellent job in breathing new life into Q's wonky Italo-disco-era gem 'The Voice of Q' (side A), rightly emphasising the track's killer slap-bass and B-boy friendly groove, whilst inserting dub mix style breakdowns, builds and drops in all the right places. Over on the reverse he handles Ruth Silky Waters' lesser-known 1980 disco-funk gem 'Everybody Loves a Good Funk' (snigger), striking just the right balance between letting the song stretch its legs and showcasing the song's superb groove and high-grade instrumentation.

This is the first vinyl release on DISCOLIDAYS, a new label by remixer extraordinaire The Reflex, fully licensed from the copyrights holders, cuts remixed from the original multitrack for the very first time.

Escape (4:01)
Gotta Believe (4:32)
Review: Now one of Japan's longest-serving funk and soul combos, QASB has an enviable track record. In November they're due to release their fifth studio album, Candy Dream, which if this teaser single is anything to go by should be another essential set. 'Escape', which lands on a clear vinyl 45, is as sweet as they come, with A.yu'mi's bi-lingual Japanese and English vocals rising above a sweet and crunchy backing track that sits somewhere between Dayton's early '80s jazz-funk classic 'The Sound of Music' (which they audibly reference at numerous points) and breezy classic soul. B-side bonus cut 'Gotta Believe', which isn't featured on the album, is a gloriously Clavinet-heavy affair that once again features plenty of nods to vintage jazz-funk.

Wolf (4:03)
Review: We've yet to hear a record from QASB that isn't either sweet soul perfection or riotous, party-starting funk perfection. Predictably, "The Jet Leg", their latest must-have "45", is another heavyweight slab of revivalist funk-soul brilliance. The A-side title track is pure heat, with guest vocalist Ryo Nakata (or Osaka Monaurail fame) doing his best James Brown impression atop a bed of sweaty deep funk drums, rising horns, bluesy guitar solos and elongated Hammond organ chords. Flipside "Wolf" is equally as heavy and energetic, this time with dense, Latin-tinged percussion, loose-limbed drum breaks, jammed-out Clavinet riffs and more rousing horns catching the ear. Like the A-side, it's a belter!

Week-End (4:32)
Review: For well over a decade Japanese combo Q.A.S.B has been serving up slices of soulful goodness that variously join the dots between James Brown, Kool & The Gang, Sly and the Family Stone and slower, more thoughtful moments. Here they return to regular home Soul Garden with their first single of 2020. A-side "Thank You" is suitably and summery, with sweet female vocals, glistening guitar riffs, sustained organ chords, hazy horns and simmering strings rising above a skittish, jazz-fired groove. The party intensifies on flipside "Week-End", a Japanese language vocal number that makes the most of a more disco-centric, jazz-funk style soul backing track.

Bad Boy (3:44)
Review: In amidst a veritable deluge of seven inch-shaped sharpness from Japan's crucial Soul Garden label this week comes this absolute must grip 45 session from Q.A.S.B. The nine-piece Tokyo funkateers have been holding it down since 2005 and this seven picks out a horn heavy highlight from last year's Q.A.S.B. III LP in the shape of "Good Guy." Throwing down a similar vibe to the Quantic Soul Orchestra, this track is all about the lead vocal from Amy A and those warm, tooting horns. Face down and QASB engage flipmode, slowing the tempo down and cranking the sass up on "Bad Boy". If seven inches were vegetables this would be one hot pepper!

Part 1 sees the Japanese funk band laying down the foundations, paying deference to the original with their own upbeat twist. Part 2, however, is where they really let loose with each instrumentalist taking lead on the solos. With Hammond-hammering and screaming horns galore, QASB have delivered something very special here.

Qeta takes care of the a-side with a serene opener in the form of 'Idream' which pairs lush ambient designs with pristine breakbeats. 'Revved Orb' is a more dubbed-out and trippy post-jungle rhythm with 'Redawn' bringing soulful Detroit techno style to the floor. Review: Coming to Sound Synthesis' very own imprint, Wave Function, producers Qeta and Inkipak go head-to-head on this incredible new six-tracker, in a rare contemporary example of a "versus" record. Qeta's approach to production makes more sense when we bear his prior explorations in jungle under the name The Jaffa Kid, in mind; helming up the first three tracks that make up the A-side's corpus, the likes of 'Idream' and 'Corpus' reveal a preference for precision, taken to increasingly bloopy, novel and spacious logical conclusions. Inkipak's rebuttal is to resort to cascading breaks blissouts, preferring a more euphoric arsenal made up of ethereal vocals and trilling arps, of which 'Schedule' is the highlight.

Urban Discos save sup plenty of it and this time it is a Far Eastern take on lover's rock that is in the sights. Here we have two cuts from Qimygo who also records as KIMIGO. By The Way (9:13)
Review: The QNQN crew tends not to say much in public, choosing instead to let DJs make up their own minds about their occasional EPs of "straightforward underground jams, ambiguous edits and unmistakably sexy grooves". Their latest missive only boasts one track, but it's a rather good one. "By The Way" sounds like a sneaky rework of a clandestine, grumpy and occasionally dark tune from someone like (but most likely not) Depeche Mode. It's vocal samples and chords are drowsy and atmospheric, but the accompanying beats and bassline are a far jauntier, floor-friendly proposition, sitting somewhere between choppy electro and hot-stepping UK garage. It's a curious combination but one that works exceedingly well.

Review: The many faces and fusions of James Reeno continue as NYC drop another white hot, super-limited 45". Concentrated funk is main message across both sides as James switches persona and hooks up with inspiring compadres along the way. "Funk Weapon" lives up to its name as Reeno's bubbling bass zips and zaps beneath some salubrious guitar work from Mano Reza. "Don't Funk Wid Us" sees him donning a trippier, more introspective funk as Kozmik Funk. Loaded with Oakland's finest E.Live on the pads and peppered with subtle talkbox tones, the message is clear: it's not a good idea to funk with these cats. Essential.

After past voyages from the likes of Opik, Denia and The Necromorph, it's the turn of Quaid to plot the course and he does so in fine style with some achingly beautiful synth work and crisp beat constructions. Just listen to the celestial arps and hi-tech jazz pads of 'Fusbares', all carried aloft by a dexterous bit of breakbeat programming. 'Cascade' meanwhile is a perfect counterpoint full of cascading bleeps and intricately criss-crossing patterns which serve as a true feast for the ears. That track is 'Pushin On' and here he takes its timeless Alice Russell vocal and drops it into a new beat. It's one that is swung with plenty of UKG references and is finished off with nice soft melodies up top. Add in a bit of tape hiss and some broken beats and you have an anthem in the making. Review: "The inquisitive, investigative and analytical listening of the earliest works of artists such as Robert John Brown and Sean Booth, Mike Paradinas or Jochem George Paap influenced me a lot during the execution of this EP.," writes Eduardo De La Calle about his incredible four-track offering, Frei Aber Einsam. Straddling ambient, acid, electro, smoky breaks and epic electronica sounds, these are tunes you can really get lost in and that's unlikely to change regardless of how many times you hit play. Innovative approaches to arranging synth stuff add an air of genuine rareness to the sounds, with 'Lobha' opening on a timeless hardcore-style break before dissipating first into a gorgeous heads down bassline rhythm before serenity and fade to joy. 'Himsa' is a glitchier affair, packed with micro-percussion and these retro refrains, while 'Magadha' is an epic, deceptively low end driven slice of sonic heaven.

This time the productions come courtesy of British producer Quartz, and perhaps a name like 'Deity Spear' tells you all you need to know; this is an angelic, synaptic, rapturous EP. Megadeep subs underlie snappy, endlessly-varied hat combos on the openers 'Lilac Cobwebs' and 'Deity Spear', which recall the contributions of Djrum or Lone to the label in recent years, with their cavernous space and extra attention to detail. 'Cosmic Horror' and 'Switchable Groove' refuse to let up on this overarching atmosphere, but lend it a new light altogether, fleshing out evermore sinister contours.

Review: Hotline Recordings has you pressing all the right buttons with another devastating deep dubstep outing. This one is from Cardiff boy Quartz and has all the classic genre hallmarks next to some fresh new perspectives. 'Black Decay' rides menacing bass and crispy hits with some jungle fills and eerie sustained chords. 'Abstract' picks up the pace with a broken beat that rides over a booming bottom end with plenty of fizzing synth energy filling in the spaces and 'Pale Tongue' layers up tough drum patterns and dark warehouse vibes.

Review: Quartz on Dispatch? Now this is the type of stuff dreams are made of. Albeit intense, hectic and paranoid dreams that involve lots of running, chasing and jumping off epic cliff edges. All tension and not let-up; 'Static' is pure nervous breakbeat energy, rattling and fizzing with intention. 'Brass Knuckles' corners you and pummels you with its rippling, unending percussive hits. 'Columns' closes this dark saga by firing shots 10 years into the future, all with razor sharp stepper precision. Quartz... The quintessential rock AND hard place.

Los Conquistadores Chocolates
Slow Motion (feat Asako Toki)
Review: With big links to Giles P and the Soil & Pimp crew, Quasimode need no introduction. Fresh off touring their Magic Ensemble LP they're back with four brand new jazz workouts. Polished and primed with their trademark power-lounge flavour, each cut sizzles with off-beat soul and swinging grooves. "Summer Madness" freaks gently like a polite Fatback Band demo. "Give It Up Turn It Loose" rides with more of a boogie groove. "Los Conquistadores Chocolate" is the most purist jazz number of the set with epic vibraphone walks and endless weaves of heady percussion. "Slow Motion" ends on a jazz-pop note with some of the sweetest harmonies they've ever put to wax. A true delight!

Ain't It Time (instrumental) (3:53)
Review: This is a reissue of the classic disco track by Queen Yahna, a New York legend renowned for her part in the supergroup P&P All Stars. Originally released in 1976 on P&P Records - the legendary label run by Peter Brown and Patrick Adams - 'Ain't It Time' is an impressive belter, putting Yahna's incredible low-ranged vocals front and centre, whether by way of commanding melismatics or deft ad-libs. The instrumental, produced by the mysterious Capraquarius, hears the disco train continue to chug along, with pistoning strings, choppy drums and defiant rhythm guitar making for a propulsive backbone.

Review: More house heat here directly from the home of the genre, namely the Windy City, courtesy of Chicago Vinyl. As soon as the first bar unfolds it oozes Mid-West house charm - the warm, soft-edged chords over the deep but driving beats complete with a nice light percussive sprinkle. 'I Need To Feel It' has a more laidback and soulful vibe with funky bass riffs and swirling pads. 'Let Em Blow' then rides on more elastic basslines that plunge down low and has colourful synth up top. 'The Weight Of Dependance' has a chunky feel with bold bass notes taking centre stage next to rising chord work and organic hits.

Switch The B (7:04)
Review: Brawther and Tristan Da Cunha's Dungeon Meat label is back with another massive platter of heavyweight house, this time from Dutchman Dennis Quin. He wastes no time in getting down to business with 'Naimus' layering up rock-solid kicks and steel-sharpened hi-hats with yelping vocal stabs for an energetic rave-up. After that comes the equally high octane and sweat-inducing 'Buzz Cracked' before 'Switch The B' brings a raw and naughty hint of garage swing to its monstrous drums. These tunes have already been road tested at places like NYC Downlow and Houghton Festival to great effect, so there is no doubting their ability to make an indelible mark.

Review: Quince makes fluid and timeless techno music influenced by the soulful high tech sounds of Detroit. His latest release is a four-track EP on the Nowhere series which features tracks like 'Udon', a hypnotic and pulsating tune with a synth melody and a vocal sample that create a heady atmosphere, as well as 'Noodles', a more upbeat and groovy track with a catchy keyboard stab and a sultry bassline that add some energy and funk. 'Anthology Of Interest' is a solid EP that showcases the veteran Dutch producer's talent and style.

Review: While Hell Yeah! Recordings may be best-known these days for exploring the relaxed, sun-kissed world of Balearic beats, the Italian label's early releases were far bolder and more focused on peak-time dancefloors. They're back on that tip on this must-check 12", which comes courtesy of label regular Quiroga (AKA long-serving producer Walter de Vecchio). In its original form (A1), 'Once Again' is a prize chunk of mind-mangling, post acid house sleaze - all rambunctious, brain-melting acid bass, sweat-soaked drums, ultra-psychedelic TB-03 lines and breathless vocal samples. It comes accompanied by two contrasting remixes - the pitched-down, slow acid-with-pianos sunshine of the 'Ambient Mix' and DMX Krew's funky acid-electro pass - and the star-fall electric/nu-disco/acid fusion of the quirky 'Freak The Funk'.

Review: Two And Half Records make the decision here to try and rid the A and B-side distinction on records that we are all very familiar with and instead they refer to each face of their latest 12" as 'dance' and 'listen.'' It makes sense frankly and is often how things go anyway. Swiss duo Quismi kick off this one with twitchy and narcotic tech house with an old school bent. French artist Groenogen then gets wild with bright melodies and grinding synths, r&b vocals and high speed tech funk on 'Twinkle Dance' while ILyes offers the tech silkiness of 'Starting Now.' On the flip is a trio of less direct, more experimental sounds that sure do offer plenty to get lost in on headphones.

Quivver Vs Dave Seaman kick off with the dark prog house of 'Rapid Unscheduled Assembly' then Magit Cacoon Vs Lonya offer the trance tinged tech darkness of 'Quantum' and Hannes Bieger Vs Luke Brancaccio Vs Gai Barone's 'Reflections' is a widescreen prog house trip that takes you the edges of the cosmos before Steve Parry Vs Renato Cohen's' 'Marmalade Skies' shuts down in dramatic fashion.

Review: Destination Milan, 1983: a group of like minded fusionists meet, jam and lay down their singular take on the blossoming Italo disco sound. A wild brew of funk, boogie, disco, Italo, rock and jazz, these sessions made it to tape but very little of it made it much further. Until now. Restored and remastered, these six tracks capture the familiarity the musicians had with each other and the loose energy shared between them. Highlights include the effortless interplay between guitar and sax on "Permesso?", the playful party swing of "Lino's Theme" and the slinky trippy intro "Strano". Bellissimo.

Given their association with the label over the last few years, it seems fitting that the first artist album on Glitterbox should come from Qwestlife, a disco, boogie and jazz-funk loving duo made up on Andy "Yam Who?" Williams and pal Tom Laroye. "Prophecy" was made with a gaggle of guest musicians and vocalists (think Andre Espeut, Jacqui George, Lady Z and Bobby Saint) and features a slick, retro-futurist blend of original tracks and covers of well-loved but largely overlooked disco classics. The result is a brilliant played and produced set that joyously flits between revivalist disco-soul, synth-heavy boogie, slick nu-disco and jazz-funk. Perhaps the most extraordinary cut is "Fever", a superb chunk of disco-rap featuring none other than Sugarhill Gang and Furious Five members Melle Mel and Scorpio.

Review: Here lie the deepest foundations for drum & bass music's longest standing, most consistent and influential act of all time. Smithy Spinback and Quiffy Q Project comprise Total Science and this is one of their earliest collaborations. A dedication to our hip-hop cousins due west, 'Rikers Island' is a deep and breezy breakbeat cut heavily influenced by the jazzier side of the burgeoning jungle and drum & bass sound coming from the likes of Good Looking and LTJ Bukem at the time. Both remastered here by seminal label Kniteforce , the Dream mix has more jazzy flourishes while the On The Run mix has more drive and heads down energy. Both totally timeless.

Not ones to fire out releases willy-nilly, they've toiled hard to curate an immaculate compendium that celebrates drum & bass's most timeless, enduring aspects. Break's outrageous sub session "Slipstream", Calibre's dubcentric stepper "Clipper Man" and Serum's ghetto-bang drama screamer "Vendetta" are just three of these gems. Get tuned in or go home!

Some of the tracks are already three years old according to the now Leipzig based producer, admitting that he feels he's become somewhat of a different person since then. Nonetheless, he found himself coming back to these recordings, allowing him to reflect on how far he's come with his production and with a real sense of pride. From moments of raw and jackin' lo-fi attitude, dusty boompty deepness and ambient house through to slo-mo boogie down business and even a bit of drum 'n' bass - the boy from Bremen has sure come a long way.

Review: This is the fourth solo album by Quantic and Will Holland's eighth full-length production. A year and a half in the making, "An Announcement To Answer" marks the next step in the evolution of Quantic's sound, broadening his musical palette whilst still delivering the trademark funky grooves that have made him a surefire floorfiller for DJs worldwide. Inspired and educated (as opposed to influenced) by the records he discovered whilst traveling and working in Puerto Rico, Nigeria, Benin, Ghana and Ethiopia, Quantic has fused the traditional sounds of these countries with hip hop, soul, funk and jazz to produce his own potent musical brew. Much of the album was written and recorded on a laptop in various locations around the world including Puerto Rico and the Candela studios in San Juan during an extended period of international gigging and crate-digging. Experimenting with new techniques and collaborating with the talented people he met during his travels has endowed Quantic's music with a greater depth, intricacy and level of sophistication than ever before. Guest artists on the album include Noelle Scaggs from The Rebirth, Ohmega Watts and Puerto Rican percussionist Tempo, who has previously worked with Roberto Roena of the legendary Fania All Stars.
