Review: The Mindhelmet crew are working hard to whip up a strong identity around trippy strains of techno and house with a 90s flavour and a playful instinct. The fifth release on the label kicks off with 4D working some trancey analogue-isms around a stout beat, while Ramez has a slither of minimal electro informing some of the synth shapes on the celestially-charged 'Las Venus'. Label mainstay Josh Baker takes things deeper with the mysterious shimmer of 'Hot Pursuit', and then Arnic spreads out over the B side with the jacked up 'Fast Stepper' and a freaky vocal chop up called 'End Communication'.

Review: A collaboration between Bristol's Shall Not Fade and London label/clothing line Handy here titled Keep It In The Family. SNF tapped 9th House & Berlin-based Italian Ruff Stuff for some wicked techno tracks, and it's all about the latter doing his best Aril Brikha impression on 'Still Dancing'. Representing Handy we have Bobby Cazanova serving up some bass-heavy sci-fi fantasies on the electro number 'Big Eden' and a collab between Arthur Dudley and Retromigration who serve up some smoky, late night deep house on 'Moodyknight'.

Review: Smile & Wave appears from out of nowhere with two unknown names heading up the first release. There's no indication of who is behind A Houseband or Russian Hackers, but both of them have done a damn fine job of bringing two sure fire killers to wax. The first is "Another Love Another Happiness", which as the title candidly suggests is yet another version of the oft-sampled "Love & Happiness", this time framed in a bubbling, dubby deep house context for the mellow heads to soak up. By way of contrast Russian Hackers get busy with "303", bringing some forthright jack to the table.

Review: Averaging a release a year since launching 2016, super cool silky disco label Noire & Blanche kick into a new year nice and early with their biggest release to date; a full-bodied six-tracker from some of wryest of artists. Smooth, dusky jams in all directions, highlights include previous Noire & Blanche wiseguys such as Tell, who follows up his last EP with the near P-funk levels of groove on "Endless Love", and Folamour who goes all out orchestral disco on "I Know It Has Been Done Before". Elsewhere A Vision Of Panorama apply full Balearic flavours to the balmy beauty of "Wind, Brass & Bells" and Too Smooth Christ takes us right back down the Trax to 88. All this and plenty more, could this be a sign Noire & Blanche may be releasing a few more records this year. We hope so.

Deep House
Review: US label Prescription Classics serve up the fourth part in the From The Vaults series. Taking timeless beauties from the archives, Ron Trent's label is now re-issuing these deep dance gems. Part 4 kicks off with Abacus's "My Brazilian Love". Raw chords, delicate swinging hi-hats and perfectly executed percussive sections give it pure soul and groove. Last Session's "Sometimes I Feel" is fuelled by a strong kick that's kept in check by a bassline to die for and sultry vocal snippets. Label boss Ron Trent is up on the flip with "Morning Fever"; its epic guitar riff and chord patterns get as deep and funky as they come, garnished with tinny percussion and low slung momentum. Lastly, "Love Is The Message" from Ani is the "For Those Who Didn't Hear It The First Time" version from 1994. Riding off its tribal percussion and sharp drum taps, the sexy vocals ooze with allure over the constantly driving groove. Essential.

Review: Ad Bourke and Rotla are Italy's answer to Floating Points and the rest of the nu-school, nu-jazz crew. The two Roman beat soldiers are a constant presence on our radars, always keeping things fresh and in flux. They land head-high on the young and vibrant Really Swing label with these naughty three cuts, spread across two sides of 10" wax - our favourite format. "Ostia 1982" makes reference to Rome's decadent riviera and the italo-disco movement, where its 4/4 disco licks dominate the A-side with pride and mystique. "Traffic Jam" is a wonky boogie chiller with liquid-like electro bass tones, and "Foresta" heads down the jazzy pastures that these two usually like to indulge in; the tune is a magnificent excursion into a deep and chimerical world of percussion and ethereal sonics. Bliss.

Review: Booming warehouse beats and a looping female vocal similar to Marco Shuttle's hit "The Vox Attitude" dominates Agnes' "Question Rhetorique", the first track from a various artist sampler Hudd Traxx has put out to celebrate eight years of releasing records. Hudd Traxx stalwart Eddie Leader - who recently appeared on another EP with Agnes - supplies "Slumster", a rigid drum track swung by a choral of synthesised pads and heavily struck chords. Detroit legend Rick Wade delivers something a little more ambient until his trademark, tremolo-effected chords shine down on the track like a ray of light breaking through the clouds. Greek producer Sek caps of an energetic EP with the deeper - potential poolside anthem - "All Over Me".

Even so, there's still something extra-special about "Take A Chance", a thoroughly deep, soulful and lilting excursion full of rolling, African-influenced percussion, eyes-closed trumpet solos and warm, evocative vocals. Alce's hero Larry Heard provides the remixes, firstly under his given name (a typically deep, soulful and dreamy interpretation) and secondly as Mr Fingers. It's these "Ambient Acid" versions - built around restless, lopped electronics and the original's sublime trumpet - that really stand out. Brilliant from start to finish.

Review: It's another RSD 2015 house stepper coming out the woodwork, and it's by none other than Amir Alexander - everyone's favourite Malmo-based contemporary Chicago house don. This time he appears under his Ritchie Ratchet moniker with two acid-laced house cuts, stripped-back and militarised into a pair of club missiles. "Infinity!" and "Ulysses!" are similar in structure but different in tone, where the former is on a steady path to destruction while the latter bounces off the walls with an abrasive touch. Class!

Review: Voice Notes is a new imprint run by London underground veteran Toby Tobias with Alphonse. A five track various artist EP, Voice Notes 002 is a time-honoured memorial for its sister label London Housing Trust, that they shut down a few years ago after 10 releases. Featuring tracks by label boss Tobias who delivers some emotive electro on 'Streets Of Gold', his evil twin Alphonse on the UK flava of 'Rujac', plus introducing Dance with the dub techno deconstruction of 'Amber', Rodney Bennett with the classic Stateside deep house of 'Palm Sunday' and Pyramids of Space with the downbeat IDM journey 'Quantis'.

Review: The XXX crew are on a mission to celebrate the adventurous and utterly well-informed dance music scene of Amsterdam, and they move to the fourth release on their label with a strong cast of characters that all have something different to say. Alterleo opens up the 12" with the low-throbbing psyche out of "Train To..." before Al Gobi takes over with the aqueous hardware house bubbles of "Rule Of Three". On the B side, Jack Pattern & John Parsley work together to lay down a fierce blend of industrial and disco that will send shivers down your spine. Review: Back ion 2021, the relaunched Foliage Records imprint offered up a killer mix from NYC house legends Mood II Swing, the must-check Deep Rooted. Soon, the revitalised label will release a sequel, with long-serving British deep house don Atjazz at the helm. This sampler EP boasts six of the highlights from that set - all remixed and reworked by Atjazz himself. Review: Untold Stories finally tells their first story in Various Artists form, reaching their hands deep into a forgotten folk corpus to retranslate each tale to we, who only speak house and techno. Described heartily as a ripple-maker, Lebanese producer Nesta devises his own folk fairytale with 'Bouchees A La Reine', with Axel S leading on with a nostalgic and groovy jazzy infused minimal track to counterpoint the A's meaty copra. On the B, Sonus takes the help with a surreal electro-dance burbler on which a winsome voice repeats the word "dreaming". And closing out comes the flat beat knockout 'Like This Girl', an instructive melody for future storytellers.

Review: Picnic tends towards flaunting the eclecticism of the British underground, standing in stark opposition to conformity. B Love, Rokko, Mathijs Smit and Herra come through for their latest V/A here, each with their own unique style and flavour to the four-way table - whether they work in deep house, techno, or the cheekier side of speed-garage-ambient. As 'Thumb Milk' says in the pre-drop moment of pause: "do what you feel, when you feel like it". Review: The Lit Level series continues with another strong, multi-artist collection of deep house cuts. Baltra steps up first, combining Motor City style cymbals patterns, lilting chord progressions and punchy drum machine hits on the fuzzy "Never Let Go (Of Me)", before YancityGurl dives deep into the ocean depths via the rock solid kick drums and woozy pads of "We Leave". Flip for a chunk of tech-tinged, ghetto-inspired wooziness from experienced producer Ray Kandinski and the distorted, analogue-rich positivity of Sonderr's "Method". With its ghostly chords, quirky vocal samples, subtle acid lines and spacey chords, the track offers just the right balance between dancefloor weight and head-in-the-clouds beauty.

Review: Defected's colourful and diverse Glitterbox party has been a real success story in recent years and the label embodies that with a great representation of the sorts of sounds you will hear at the party. It's all about full throttle, emotionally intense house, soul and disco and that is exactly the case on Melvo Baptiste's opener 'Gonna Be Alright' (feat Jamie 3:26 & Annette Bowen) with its big diva vocals, piano stabs and hand claps. Review: It's always unwise to judge a label that's still taking its' first steps, but Banoffee Pies has barely put a foot wrong since launching a couple of years back. Here, the Bristol-based imprint continues with its' successful split release formula, gathering together a quartet of tracks from up-and-coming producers. Beaner kicks things off with the bumpin', low-slung deep house grooves and delay-laden guitar samples of "It Takes Two", before Philou Louzolo raises the temperature with the looped horn samples and thumping beats of "Alter Ego". Review: The Kolour Ltd label breaks radio silence and does it in style with the heavy hitting It's House Not House EP featuring contributions from Bicep, Rick Wade and DJ Sprinkles! Finding themselves in such respected company, Bicep elect to celebrate their Kolour Ltd debut by granting "Feel It" the vinyl platform it deserves, with the track a much requested secret weapon of their DJ sets. Review: Regular collaborators Biesmans and Johannes Albert tend to release at least one record a year together. 2024's 'Give Me Luv', is one of their most accessible and entertaining to date. It has already become a feature of club sets thanks to a digital release earlier in the year and has finally landed on wax. In its original form (side A), the track offers a delicious blend of snappy Chicago house percussion, undulating analogue bass, glassy-eyed chords and colourful nu-disco synths - all topped off with a superb part spoken, part sung vocal from the undisputed "voice of house" Robert Owens. Over on the flip they charge headlong into techno territory on the harder, darker, faster and undeniably bigger 'Detroit Mix'.

Review: Leonard "Big Strick" Strickland is perhaps best known for his family ties with Omar-S (they're cousins), though his productions are well worthy of praise in their own right. Here, he offers up a sampler 12" featuring cuts from his recent (and excellent) Reservoir Dogs LP. Perhaps the most noteworthy cut is "Family Affair", a lovingly constructed chunk of hypnotic, melodic deepness written with Omar-S. That said, Strick's solo effort "Armed & Dangerous" - a winding chunk of voodoo techno - is arguably better. The mazy techno-funk of Reckless Ron Cook's "Night Moves" is also outstanding.

Review: Blue Mondays are a Mantua based project of Alex Ferrazzi and Keemani with singer Francesco Sperotto aka Kaysand (who got his start with deep house band Grammophono), on another fine EP for their eponymous imprint. First up is the deep down and dirty electro house of "Stop" featuring gritty synth arpeggios, dusty drums and sleazy vocals. The legendary Robert Owens should need no introduction, as do legendary British duo Justin Harris & Luke Solomon aka Freaks; whose brilliant "Right Now" appears in the form of a "Blue Mondays Tfbm mix" while the legendary Swayzak's version of "Stop" is an epic hypnotic techno journey over its full 13 minutes duration.

Review: Dungeon Meat's self-titled label is not known for its subtlety, and so it goes on this rip-roaring various artists 12" featuring three rough and ready jams for the peak time house crowd. Blunt Instruments get things going straight away with the mean New Jersey swing of "Kum On", as tough and bumping a house cut as you're ever likely to find. Ron Obvious steps up with "Mindful Vision", bringing an utterly addictive stripped down garage-y shuffle to the table, while Per Hammar finishes the EP off with the breaks-embellished "BX Chamber", a freaked-out dub-soaked affair for the heads down crowd.

Review: Even if you weren't familiar with The Legend Of Gelert series, you'd probably assume it has something to do with Blind Jack's Journey. There's something of the aesthetic to The Legend Of Gelert that brings to mind those North Yorkshire pranksters. Apparently started with the heavy involvement of Luv*Jam, there is some interesting canine mythology to The Legend Of Gelert should you wish to delve further but it's not integral to enjoying the music. Several of the artists that featured on the previous two Gelert 12"s return here and as ever the overarching mood is one of dreamy ambience and wide-eyed house music.

Review: Norm Talley's Upstairs Asylum label only arrived in 2021 but is already up there with the great Motor City imprints. The boss has been busy putting together a trio of new EPs for the first half of 2023 that showcases a wealth of Mid-West talent. House hero Boo Williams kicks off this one with his typically tight drum programming and party-starting synth work on 'Tickin Clock.' Eric Johnson keeps it raw, deep and loopy on 'Melodic Gruv' then Reggie Dokes brings his signature Atlanta house sound to 'Mother's Child' with its melancholic lead sax and 'End of Time' is a broken beat bliss out.

Review: Classic deep house movements from Stefan Braatz, Virgo Four and Rheji Burrell, coming through with the maximized, wally acid heat. 'Everyman Jack' on the A-side orders punters to shake, albeit whoever recorded the vocal sample is clearly so confident of their floor-command that they barely needed to do more than whisper. Burrell helms up two new ones on the B, meanwhile, with 'XTC' remaining soulful, autotuned and piano-phasey, and 'Gimme Ya Luv' leaning towards low-end-theoretic hip-house.

Review: The second sampler celebrating Full Pupp's 10 years in the business of releasing records kicks off with Andrea Bratten's "Every Fourth Bar", a veritable Scando-disco stomper which puts us in mind of some of the label's most classic output. The other tracks aren't too bad either: Randaberg Ego Ensemble's "You Can't Do It Right" provides a heavy percussive jam for those who like things free flowing and stripped back, the shameless vocal house of Blackbelt Andersen's "Langniappe" and one of Prins Thomas's trademark Diskomiks versions of Mental Overdrive's "Spoks", which takes things into expectedly cosmic territory.

Review: Vinyl-only imprint Appian Sounds - jointly run from bases in East London and Dublin - is fast becoming a reliable source of extra-special deep house. This latest split EP, featuring tracks from a trio of rising talents, is another must-have release. Newcomer Jock Burton impresses with "Dolmen", a chunk of loose and spacey deep house that wouldn't sound out of place on Mood Hut or M/O/S Deep (check also Slowburn's remix, which adds a bleep style sub bassline and tools up the percussion). RDMA's "Syeeda" is ultra-deep and heavily electronic - the kind of track you want to both dance to and immense yourself in while horizontal - while Route 8's "Hemitropy" is a pleasingly dusty trip into yearning, half-remembered deep house

Living up to its title immaculately Future Retro is a space-aged soul trip from established and breaking talents alike. Irish veteran Derek Carr takes us back to early UR joints with his body-moving analogue groove, Rob Belleville continues where he left us on Ante and Ibiza Boys with rippling filtered synths, newcomer Mihail P gets down to the 808 nitty gritty with a bouncing ball acid funk breaker while Erell Ranson closes the show on a hazy, dream-like weave of melting synths. Review: The ever prolific Chris Carrier teams up with Spanish outfit Rhythm & Soul for the fifth record on Jus Groove It, and as you would expect the tracks come on classy and nicely tripped out. "Fasten Your Seatbelts" leads the charge with its mechanical set of drums and subtle tones and FX making this a DJ tool par excellence, while "Pilote Automatique" holds down a more swinging groove while adhering to the same mantra of reduced, DJ-friendly production. It's not all strict club sounds though, as "Sphere#2" demonstrates with its abstract synthesizer loping as a pleasant finishing touch to the record.

Review: Slick synth disco vibes abound as Pole Jam reach their third release (and first this year) in the company of Cassara, Monsoon Season, Eclectic Sound and label regulars Deep Sound Express. As with previous drops there's a great sense of silky sonic consistency throughout that allays any fears you may have regarding various artist releases. From the cinematic late 70s illustriousness of Criss Cassara's "La Vela" to the deep heavy nodding Raha-fronted emotion session "Closer" via the sand-in-toes, fuzzy guitar-plucking title track, Pole Jam move forever closer to that all important 'essential label' status.
