Review: Phaedra is the fifth studio album by German electronic group Tangerine Dream, recorded in November 1973 at The Manor in Shipton-on-Cherwell, England, and released in 1974 through Virgin. An icier, tempoless departure for a band otherwise better recognised for their sequencer-led, soundtrack-bred sound, this was a hidden moulin for frost-drone fanatics, and a deviant pupil of the otherwise strict Berlin School. Despite receiving little to no airplay, Phaedra gained significant traction through word of mouth when it was released by a rather more hippified Richard Branson's fledgling Virgin label, eventually reaching number 15 on the UK Albums Chart and remaining on the charts for 15 weeks. Its long-form pieces, such as 'Sequent C' and 'Mysterious Semblance At The Strand Of Nightmares', represent an indifference to constraints of timing, instead washing over the ears as diachronic, swirling, crisp ice ambient smirrs.

Review: Unveiled as part of Record Store Day 2025 celebrations and produced by Zev Feldman in collaboration with the Bill Evans Estate, Further Ahead: Live in Finland 1964-1969 is a remarkable double album collection of previously unreleased recordings by the legendary jazz pianist. The set features intimate performances from Evans' iconic '60s trios plus a special 1965 session with alto saxophonist Lee Konitz. Pressed on great sounding heavyweight vinyl, this version includes rare photos, essays by Marc Myers and Gil Goldstein and reflections from Evans' trio members Chuck Israels, Eddie Gomez and Marty Morell, which makes it a real authority on Evans' work.

Review: Much to nerdy Japanese electronic lovers' delight, Temporal Drift reissued Hiroshi Yoshimura's Surround last year, and now carry on focussing on his work with the first-ever reissue of Flora, an overlooked gem in ambient music. Recorded in 1987 but unreleased until 2006, which was three years after Yoshimura's sad passing, Flora carries on in style where his acclaimed works Green and Surround left off. It's another sublime record that highlights Yoshimura's ability to explore the interplay between sound and ambience. He was a diverse talent who also created an album for museum playback, and composed a soundtrack for a contemporary fashion show.

Review: Renowned DJ and selector MURO is a Jedi-level compiler and this new collection of his delves into Victor's extensive archives to spotlight a world of Japanese jazz, fusion and AOR. It take sin plenty of internationally known names like Yasuko Agawa on the sunset sounds of 'L.A. Night', Sadistics who offers the more psyched out guitar leans of 'On the Seashore', Yuji Ohno's neo-Balaeric bliss-out 'The Dawn of Seychells' and Hiroshi Fukumura's soul soothing Ry Ayres-style melodies on 'White Clouds.' These are luxurious sounds and timeless tracks with MURO's signature funky perspective making this a brillaint choice for brighter, warmer days.

Review: An album that surely needs no introduction and does precisely what it says on the tin (like Ronseal), Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath is often considered (and rightly so) to be the first true heavy metal album, while the deeper nerds will also attest to the project birthing the doom metal genre as an entity thanks to guitarist Tony Iommi's signature menacingly psychedelic tone. Originally released in 1970, this self-titled debut boasts some of the band's most iconic cuts to date such as the looming title-track as well as 'The Wizard', 'Behind The Wall Of Sleep', and, 'N.I.B.', while the fact that they managed to also record and release their sophomore follow up Paranoid the very same year is anyone's guess (drugs).

Review: Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of the War of the Worlds - The New Generation revisits the 1978 classic with a fresh cast, packing a powerful punch. This updated version, like the original, evokes the feel of an old-style radio drama, now narrated by Liam Neeson. His softer Celtic tone contrasts Richard Burton's original sombre delivery, although his cues are sometimes overshadowed by repetitive music. Notable contributions include Gary Barlow's plaintive 'Forever Autumn,' Joss Stone's thoughtful 'The Spirit of Man,' and Ricky Wilson's fervent ''Brave New World.' The revamped instrumentation and eerie new Martian music add a modern twist, yet the piece retains its grandiose symphonic rock roots. The music recalls early Rice/Lloyd Webber and John Barry's film scores, blending nostalgia with innovation. The sound recording delivers a hefty impact, perfect for the UK tour celebrating H.G. Wells, the father of science fiction. Now available on double vinyl, this release honors the timeless appeal of Wells' visionary work while introducing it to a new generation.

Review: By the time they reached 1973, Genesis knew exactly the kind of band they wanted to be, and Selling England By The Pound saw them going further into the pastoral folk sound which would inform the evolution of prog into a more specific style rather than an attitude. This was the penultimate album from the original, classic Genesis line-up of Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins and Steve Hackett, and you can still sense a band exploring possibilities to match their considerable musical chops. Just take in the monumental 'Dancing With The Moonlight Knight' and you can hear the mould being cast for the waves of prog that were to come.

Review: Originally released in 1978, Road To Ruin would serve as the fourth full-length from leather jacket-clad punk pioneers The Ramones. While a rejected, mitigated flop upon release due to the band's swing for the radio fences (or airwaves) complete with sonic elements at the time alien to the punkosphere such as acoustic guitars, lead guitar solos and 60s pop ballads, in the near five decades since release, the project has been reevaluated as a bold successor to 1977's iconic Rocket To Russia (although that album did place 50 places ahead on the Billboard 200 at the time of release). Marking (no pun intended) their first effort to feature drummer Marky Ramone, who replaced Tommy Ramone after his departure due to the inability to keep up with the rigors of touring and lack of residuals from their previous record; the album's glossy, clean production has slowly morphed from malaise to praise over the ensuing decades, while offering up some of their most timeless and essential bangers including 'Needles & Pins' and 'I Wanna Be Sedated' (which if Spotify metrics are anything to go by, is the band's most popular song after, of course, 'Blitzkrieg Bop').

Review: It's the album that redefined ambient music, not least for a generation of parasympathetic ravers. Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Volume II marked a stylistic shift away from the first edition in the infamous ambient LP 'series', Selected Ambient Works 85-92. Volume II differed substantially; this time, there would be no 'techno' addendum to 'ambient', and all tracks thereupon would lack the usual indulgence of beats, however easy-on-the-ears these had been beforehand. Known for its many numbered tracks - which on the original edition, rather than track names, denoted references to images of natural forms, textures and geologic readymades, all bathed in orange, and from which fans had to infer the written names - this expanded edition stays faithful to this origin. Even so, it adds two unreleased D Jamesian treats - provided you don't count the massive Soundcloud dump of 2015 as a release - 'th1 [evnslower]' and a reversed version of 'Rhubarb' - as well as a the previously vinyl only '#19'.

Review: The name 'Ocean Colour Scene' is an amalgamation of the eponymous band's three favourite words. This direct-democratic approach to band-naming should be an example to us all. But what of their music? 'Yesterday Today 1992-1997' compiles the West Midlands band's most eminent songs, which largely fall in the category of Britpop and indie. While commercial success for the group was limited (indeed bands like Oasis, Blur and The Verve were monopolizing the market), that says absolutely nothing about the quality of the music on this retrospective. Quite the contrary, actually; with selections spanning over ten studio albums, songs like 'Sway', 'Talk On' and 'Blue Deep Ocean' sound equally nostalgic and optimistic for a better musical future than now.

Notes: Module A-180-3 is a dual buffered 1-in-3 multiple. The signal applied to the input socket appears as a buffered signal at the three output sockets. Each output has its own buffer, i.e. the three output sockets are not simply connected to each other. The lower output of the upper unit is normalled in the factory to the input of the lower unit. Review: This album marks the first time an Eel River show has made it to vinyl. Co-produced by Bill Graham Presents and the Hog Farm, this unique performance offered a refreshing departure from Jerry Garcia's typical urban venues. The show featured Garcia's quintessential band-Gloria Jones, John Kahn, David Kemper, Jacklyn LaBranch and Melvin Seals-and captured the essence of their signature sound. Review: cLOUDDEAD's debut album, a compilation of six 10" EPs released between 2000 and 2001, remains a quintessential example of abstract hip-hop. This expansive 3xLP, characterised by its dense, enigmatic soundscapes and avant-garde lyrics, has profoundly influenced a range of sub-genres such as cloud rap, hauntology, and lo-fi hip-hop. The trioiWhy?, Doseone, and Odd Nosdamiemerged from Cincinnati's vibrant underground scene, marked by events like Scribble Jam, and later moved to the Bay Area, where they helped establish the Anticon collective. Despite their shift to the West Coast, their Midwestern origins continued to shape their sound, rooted in the eclectic and experimental spirit of their early days. As noted in Chris Martin's liner notes, cLOUDDEAD's music was a unique blend of idiosyncratic vision and audacious experimentation. Each EP in this collection offers a distinct auditory experience. Tracks like 'Apt. A' and 'And All You Can Do Is Laugh' are emblematic of their surreal style, combining nonsensical lyrics and unconventional production. Nosdam's production seamlessly transitions from ambient textures reminiscent of Flying Saucer Attack to gritty drum breaks and esoteric samples. Restored by Nosdam and accompanied by a poster, this edition of cLOUDDEAD's pioneering sound, is the ideal version to get.

Review: Anja Schneider has been at the heart of the Berlin underground for decades. Famously she headed up the Mobilee label which was a powerhouse of, well, house, and now she revisits her sizeable back catalogue for a bumper triple album of remixes, works and updates. If nothing else this collection shows what great range she had as all styes are covered from dark and driving tech to more blissed out deep house. The likes of 'Turning My Head' show great percussive flair and 'Dubmission' (Julian Muller remix) is quick and slick, stripped back minimal. Vocal delight 'Rain' is a real classic amongst many here.

Review: Taylor Swift's latest offering presents an eclectic mix of deeply personal storytelling and sonic experimentation. Opening with 'Fortnight' featuring Post Malone, the track sets a tone that merges soft melodies with a hint of contemporary edge. The album moves seamlessly between intimate moments, like 'My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys,' and more expansive anthems such as 'Florida!!!' featuring Florence & The Machine. The acoustic versions of some tracks, like 'Down Bad' and 'But Daddy I Love Him,' strip back the production, allowing Swift's vulnerability to shine. This release reveals a further evolution of her sound, weaving together emotive lyrics and bold musical choices.

Review: The arrival of the Acapellas Anonymous series in the mid/late '80s was a massive gamechanger, giving immediate access to DJs and producers to hundreds of vocal samples that would have taken a fortune (and a lifetime) to collect. Edit king Mr K has rebuilt, remastered, and carefully portioned them onto a five disc set of 7-inch singles, "including all the classic vocal bits that became iconic samples," and more than a few new additions to bring things up to date. You'll know more than a few of these on first listen, others you may have never even realised were samples, but no-one will underestimate the power of a great vocal sample dropping in the right way in the right mix. An absolute essential.

Review: Brian Kage is a Detroit mainstay who finally serves up a long waited debut album here in the form of Timeless Times, which seamlessly fuses classic house rhythms with the distinctive flair of Motor City techno and features top guests like Jon Dixon, Ob Ignitt and Luke Hess. It is a large and bold work that encompasses 19 tracks across four slabs of wax on his own Michigander label. Along the way, there are plenty of club-ready cuts, as well as a range of emotional landscapes that blend ambient textures and nostalgic vignettes into something timeless and escapist. Without a doubt, this is Kage's most personal work to date and an unmissable journey through the current sound of his famous home city.

Review: With a superhero like Spiderman being recognised the world over by those who've legitimately never even held a comic book, it makes sense that any film adaption should rely on the current sounds of the modern era to deliver an entertaining and reliably engaging soundtrack. Where 2002's game-changing Sam Raimi adaptation boasted a retrospectively cheesy bevvy of nu-metal adjacent radio rock with the film's lead single even being penned by Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, the music selection on this latest experimental animated series of films; Across The Spider Verse, turns to the current realms of radio dominating pop-rap. Overseen by acclaimed trap producer Metro Boomin and enlisting a who's who of modern artists such as Don Toliver, Lil Uzi Vert, Future, Nas and A$AP Rocky to name just a small handful, the collection serves equally as an of the time and on the pulse soundtrack, but also as a banging collaborative compilation of some of the best hip-hop acts in the scene today.

Review: It's been a long time since Halo: Combat Evolved revolutionised the word of first-person shooter video games. Graphically superior to anything that had come before it, the franchise also benefits from a spectacularly gripping storyline in which humans are outgunned and out-teched by a ruthless and uncompromising alliance of superiorly equipped alien races united as The Covenant. The titular Halo adds a kind of Prometheus air of uncertainty, as nobody really knows what it does until attempts to activate the galaxy-destroying weapon reveal something worse than death - a parasitic breed called the Flood. If all that was enough to blow everyone away in 2001, 2004 brought us to a whole new level of immersion in this future scape. Just like its predecessor, a big part of the impact was the visionary score by gaming soundtrack masters Martin O'Donnell and Michael Savatori. Now here it is in all its Gregorian chanting glory.

Review: You had us at Sakamoto. Or rather you had us at "excerpts from Ryuichi Sakamoto's time working under Nippon Colombia's label, Better Days. First released in 1992, this 12-track compilation runs from tracks that appeared on the Japanese synth legend's debut album, Thousand Knives, first released in 1978, through to songs written with the iconic session group KYLYN, featuring celebrated guitar great Kazumi Watanabe. Ever the auteur, even if you didn't know this was Sakamoto in proper landmark mode, there's no chance the sounds here could really be confused for anyone or anything else. It's mature and intelligent, yet strangely - and typically - fun, childlike and a little cartoonish, sharing as much in common with experimental electronica that was emerging during the 1970s and 1980s as video game scores from the 1990s.

Review: The Three Blind Mice compilation, curated by DJ and producer Tatsuo Sunaga, offers a brilliant overview of the iconic Japanese jazz label's legacy. This double album set brings together some of the most influential tracks from the 1970s and 1980s, highlighting the label's pivotal role in revitalising the Japanese jazz scene. Founded by Takeshi Fujii, TBM aimed to be Japan's answer to Blue Note, and it succeeded by delivering impeccable sound quality and showcasing innovative talent. With standout artists like Tsuyoshi Yamamoto and Isao Suzuki, this compilation features exceptional performances, such as 'Nardis' by Masabumi Kikuchi, 'A Green Caterpillar' by Masaru Imada Trio, and 'Feel Like Makin' Love' by Isao Suzuki Sextet. The selection spans ballads, bebop, and more avant-garde sounds, reflecting the label's diverse offerings. What sets this compilation apart is the meticulous mastering by Isao Kikuchi and cutting by Katsutoshi Kitamura, ensuring the original recordings' clarity is preserved. The gatefold packaging, complete with an OBI strip and liner notes by Takao Ogawa, adds historical depth, making this a great set to have. This collection encapsulates the vibrant spirit of "Wa Jazz" and also shows TBM's profound influence on Japanese jazz.

Review: Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers' unforgettable 1958 concert at Club Saint Germain in Paris is finally available in full, spread across three LPs in red, white and blue, paying homage to France. This set brings together Lee Morgan's searing trumpet, Benny Golson's soulful sax, Bobby Timmons on piano and Jymie Merritt's steady bass, with Parisian local Kenny Clarke joining on drums for 'A Night in Tunisia.' The energy is electric and it's easy to hear why this performance took home the 1959 Grand Prix du Disqueiit's jazz history in action.

Review: The third full-length from experimentalist punk/hip-hop trio Death Grips originally arrived in 2013, just a mere year on from their exceptionally warped debut LP The Money Store and its equally depraved sophomore follow up No Love Deep Web. Made up of math-rock drummer extraordinaire Zach Hill, programmer and synth mangler Andy Morin, and of course the confrontational MC Ride; Government Plates proved the collective were seemingly unable to artistically sit still, while refusing to exude a modicum of stagnation in their prolific early days. Celebrating its ten year anniversary, while just finishing up a chaotic headline set at this year's Outbreak Fest held in Manchester, the mystique and allure of Death Grips has only continued to swell with time, and this overlooked gem (as it falls between two of their most quintessential projects) couldn't be more in need of vital appreciation and reappraisal.

Review: Pink Siifu's haunting, uncompromising masterpiece 'Negro Deluxe' gets a limited 3xLP press. An ultra cathartic, hard-hitting haze of hardcore punk, free jazz, and harsh noise-adjacent sound design with violent and corrupt cops firmly in its crosshairs, it emerged in 2020 a month prior to the murder of George Floyd. Originally titled ‘To Be Angry’, NEGRO draws influence from Afrocentric jazz, sci-fi literature and the music of Bad Brains, Death, the late Ras G, among others. One of the most arresting and immediate LPs hailing from the hip hop continuum of the last ten years, it's not to be missed!

After The Goldrush is truly timeless Neil Young, a benchmark setting record that even now, five decades after its initial grand unveiling, feels fresh and highly original - albeit the Canadian-American artist and his third studio album have been imitated and replicated by many musicians and bands in the years between then and now.

It's also significant as one of four landmark LPs released by the individual members of cult folk rock collective Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young following their chart-topping record Deja Vu, and as such can be seen as a vital chapter in a hugely important era for acoustic rock and folk. Perhaps even the most significant time in the evolution of that sound, so dive in and experience this master songwriter at the top of his game.

Review: Going on to become the biggest selling record in America in 1979, Supertramp's sixth album Breakfast In America is perhaps the quintessential historic example of a British album destined to "break the USA". As if forecasted in advance, 1979 heard the band take capital advantage of the bilateral "special relationship" formed between the two nations since the War, a principle which was of course thereafter reflected in the rock industry. After Led Zep but long before Sting, Supertramp would here spawn the likes of 'The Logical Song', 'Goodbye Stranger', and 'Take The Long Way Home', all of which were smash hits in the US but comparatively denervated back home, where they would only scrape the top ten in the Charts. Despite such an imbalance in successes, this show from the Pavillon de Paris captures the band back in Europe that year, both filmed and recorded in December 1979.

Review: The influence of Type O Negative continues to be felt long after Peter Steele's death signalled the end of the band. The goth metal band have a generous number of high points in their career, and 2003 album Life Is Killing Me is surely one of them. Drawing on his personal struggles at the time, Steele created a powerful statement draped in the grandiose style of rock he had cultivated since the band's debut. As well as the single 'I Don't Wanna Be Me', there was a cover of the song 'Angry Inch' and the opening track 'Thir13teen', a piece of music from classic TV show The Munsters. Two decades on from its original release, this is the first time the album has been released on vinyl, presented as a triple black and green pressing in a trifold sleeve.
