Review: The idea of what makes "modern soul" has long been a subject of debate, even among those at the top, specially tasked with arbitrating its definition. At Success Bottling Co., such spats escalated to the point where A&R team members Stephen Arndt and Tim Zawada had to be physically separated during a heated tracklist meeting. Yet we know that M-soul's origins can be traced to the UK's Northern Soul scene, where, in the late 70s, disco-adjacent 45s began appearing alongside traditional 60s selections. Today, modern soul is often associated with the 80s, incorporating synths and rhythm-machines. Quibbles persist: How much brass is too much? Can strings and synths truly coexist? Review: Notoriously elusive, sophisti-thereal pop/post-punk collective Vazz answer to almost no-one. Emerging from the same late 70s/early 80s mutant formaldehyde mists that spawned This Mortal Coil and Crepuscule, yet bringing the dream pop sound to Glasgow, Hugh Small and Anna Howson are still going strong as a boutique bringing-together of mindful, magnetic musicians, pedigreed for the seemly discotheque. First released on Cathexis Records, we are indeed much cathected to both EPs in this collection. In sloshing but somehow still self-contained fashion, 'Your Final Word' swims in reverb nearly to the point of drowning its own harmonies, yet breathability is somehow still retained. 'Bleached White Skin' is the perfect storm of wavy wash, operatic doublings and ditzy drum machine, and 'Breath' brings spring-verb coldwave stylings to a languorous, pitchy closer. Then 'Feverpitch' and 'For A Reason' hear the compilation sprawl further into arpeggiating tumult, as we move on to material from the 1987 'Feverpitch' EP. This 40th anniversary edition collates both EPs and adds a handful of unissued minimal wave pearls.

Review: Described in the accompanying press release as "the halfway point between Bollywood and Balearic", Rupa Biswas' 1982 debut "Disco Jazz" has long been a favourite of dusty-fingered diggers with a healthy bank balance and a penchant for the quirky. All four tracks are cheery, charming and superior to many "Bollywood disco" records produced in the same period. The sunny disco-boogie of "Moja Bhari Moja" is followed on side A by the delightfully eccentric, bass-powered AOR-disco/funk-rock fusion of "East West Shuffle" and the effortlessly Balearic cheeriness of "Aaj Shanibar". Best of all, though, is the exotic and intoxicating flipside cut "Ayee Morshume Be-Reham Duniya" which expertly joins the dots between cosmic rock and Balearic disco grooves for 16 spellbinding minutes.

Review: Hankerers after 90s band musicians turned Y2K solo electronica artists will water at the mouth at the first play of this one. Her Space Holiday was the first-time solo alias of Marc Bianchi, the American indietronic musician known for his membership of the bands Indian Summer and Calm. Turning his hand to solo soundcraft at the turn of the millennium, and releasing under Skylab and Tiger Style - the latter of which saw to the release of the first edition of this record, albeit with a different sleeve design - Bianchi's solo output would echo the post-hardcore humours that characterised his group work, except for the fact that it would also somewhat electronify them into contrition, resulting in every logical conclusion from lasery broadcast neofolk ('Snakecharmer') to anxiolytic hyperballad emo ('Through The Eyes Of A Child').

Review: It has been two decades since we last heard a peep out of post-emo triplet Karate. Thankfully, the one thing that hasn't changed in that time is their deft songwriting abilities - striking a sumptuous balance between jazz-blues, unplugged pop-punk-grunge-garage, and some other bits in between. Folk this ain't, but it feels cut from a cloth that's stored close by, at least. Here we are, then, with Geoff Farina offering us ten new tracks with help from long-time partner on this project, Andy Hong. 35 minutes of beautiful songwriting, exceptional guitar work, and a mood that's somewhere between sombre, chilled out, and primed to explode, this might be one of the most re-listenable rock records we have had the pleasure of writing about in some time. In fact, it is.

Review: The early Cold War years had quite a lot to be envious of. Clearly defined lines of partisanship and international allegiances, rather than this 'each-country-for-itself' end game we seem to be setting up to play right now. Then there was the sexy, swoon-y, seductive and thoroughly intoxicating pop sounds emanating from teenage bedrooms, shopping malls, concert halls and anywhere else you can think of. Call Me Old Fashioned hits the nail on the latter's head. Squarely. The soundtrack to the first part of Louis Wayne Moody's spy trilogy, this is all about those tunes that make you want to sip Manhattans while gazing at some red-lipped diva cast in the low-lit spots of a late night cabaret restaurant. Or lose yourself in the rhythm of a live Latin jazz ensemble, or the bombast of big band. Picture painted, it's a transportive release, even if you've never seen or heard of the movies.

In its heyday, it became a hub for soulful music with its flagship band the Commands scoring a hit in 1966 with 'No Time For You.' Their success led to 20 more singles over 30 months and Epstein's inclusive studio welcomed a diverse racial mix of Texas talent which in turn created a melting pot of sound. Review: Numero have put together a definitive reissue here of Antena's much loved and cult classic Camino Del Sol LP that first label in 1982. It is the work of Isabelle Antena, the former au pair for Rick Wakeman of Yes, and two of her teenage friends, and was a contemporary bossanova record that somehow joined the dots between Kraftwerk and Antonio Carlos Jobim. After first release it was long forgotten as Isabelle moved on to work in the world of jazz in Asia. Now it is revived and we're all reminded of what an essential album it is from this shot lived but important outfit.

Review: American rock band Duster returned back in September with a fourth new full-length album. Just a mere matter of months later, their regal Numero Uno label is also reissuing their Stratsophere album. It dates back to 1998 and found the band of multi-instrumentalists Clay Parton, Canaan Dove Amber and Jason Albertini reinventing a slow-core sound at the end of the first wave. It's a dreamscape soundtrack with hazy, arpeggiated guitars layered up over fine drumming and barely-there vocals. Still special even now.

Review: Numero Group have embarked on a reissues bundle of slowcore pioneer band Codeine's first and last albums, as well as an intermediary EP. 'Frigid Stars' is the former, and made for a remarkable debut album, epitomizing the late-80s-to-early-90s sound that still continues to influence trailblazers in the genre to this day, from Deathcrash to Bardo Pond. Codeine laid it bare before its name was coined: proto-slowcore is heavy, but not aggressive; quiet, but not silent; its vocals are hushed but present, perhaps reflecting the mood of doom that had set upon the local music scene in New York, where the band originate from. Thematically, the LP deals with angsty themes from loss to despair, with choice cuts like 'When I See The Sun' lumbering through ultra-reverb, gothic melodic lulls and guitarry plods to the death.

Review: Numero's Cabinet of Curiosities series hits double figures here with a 10th essential outing packed with musical treasures. L80s: So Unusual is a brilliantly broad mix that heads to all corners of the world with a sublime mix of downtempo sounds that reach into "icy hot coldwave, Sausalito seafood jazz, Glaswegian goth, makeshift Madonna, Sade spoofs, and Brat Pack balearic." All 12 of the songs here are beguiling and beautiful in equal measure, as is often the way with this great label, with highlights including Nika Rejto's 'More Than Just A Dream' (Edit) and Elisa Waut's 'Being Strong.'

Review: The Universal Togetherness Band were an anomaly during their short, bright burst of energy recording in the late 70s and early 80s. Columbia College's audio engineering program became their gateway to recording their huge swathes of visionary soul, which ranks up there with the all-time greats like Stevie Wonder. Numero already reissued some of the group's standout tracks, but now comes a wave of unreleased demos from the group's Andre Gibson, recorded between 1980 and 1984. These are simply stunning songs, from the mellow Rhodes ballad 'Breakaway' to the snappy 'Stuck On A Thrill', mixed in with little segues and odd offcuts that sound all the more charming with the naturally lo-fi nature of the recordings.

Review: Labels don't come much bigger or better than Numero when it cones to sounds like folk. This third volume in their Mid Atlantic Story series is another one for the armchair drag racers, lowrider and souleros that pays tribute to the sounds that came after soul. It's inspiration comes from the record industry's "metric trunkload of cruising compilations" - some of which were legit, many of which were not - that soundtracked an entire subculture. Sounds from the greater bay region and those from the east side all feature here with artists like Father's Children, Jato von Del and The Positive Sounds.
