Review: There have been many concurrent sounds of 60s and 70s New York, but the Latin soul subsidiary of said multipli-city saw and heard its heyday in the sweet-spot of 1964-78, where the Latin American favourite label Fania Records reigned supreme in its niche. Bannering the likes of Willie Colon, Hector Lavoe, Ruben Blades, Johnny Pacheco and Celia Cruz, Fania was born of a desire to promote salsa music and adjacent styles in New York, after Dominican musician and label boss Johnny Pacheco underwent financial woes and sought respite in memories of a quaint Cuban luncheonette of the same name. The heady mix of sonic pimento collides several of the best salsa bands in a New York otherwise dominated by soul and funk, amounting to a charred, lively stew.

Review: Eccentric Soul: The Cobra Label unearths a fascinating collection of soul and r&b from the obscure Cobra label, offering a unique blend of raw energy and heartfelt emotion. Opening with the infectious 'Wooleh Booleh' by Sonny Ace & The Twisters, the compilation quickly sets a vibrant, foot-tapping tone. Tracks like 'Buscando (Searchin')' by Mike & The Belairs showcase smooth, silky vocals and catchy grooves, while 'Funny Funny Funny' by Henry & The Kasuals introduces a more playful, upbeat rhythm. The diversity of sounds is clear, with everything from the introspective 'Someone Who Cares' by Royal Five to the funky 'Summer Rain' by Freddie Martinez. The compilation's eclecticism is a testament to the variety and depth of Cobra's catalog, making it an essential listen for soul enthusiasts.

Review: 'Breaks' compilations featuring classic funk, soul and disco cuts with drum-breaks that could be doubled-up or sampled by DJs and producers, were once a mainstay of hip-hop culture. These days, far fewer are released, making this excellent collection of break-sporting gems from legendary Miami label T.K Records (and its T.K Disco offshoot) a pleasing development. Regardless of whether you're a hip-hop turntablist or not, there are tons of bona fide classics on show, from the impassioned call for peace that is Timmy Thomas's peerless 'Why Can't We Live Together' and the bubbly, reggae-tinged disco brilliance of Peter Brown's 'Dance With Me', to the regularly-sampled soul wonder that is Betty Wright's 'Clean Up Woman' and the strings-and-synths-laden excellence of 'Keep It Up' by Milton Wright.

It's time to track back 20 years to one of the true gems from Soul Jazz's heavyweight range of compilations. Miami Funk takes into the beating heart of the late 60s-early 70s scene hovering around Florida's most famous city, and introduces us to some of the hip underground cats who were laying down the sweetest grooves at that time. Some it's rocking, some of it rolls, at times it's sweet and elsewhere it's nasty, but as you'd expect the quality never dips. This one has been long out of print, and now a limited run is making its way back, with this coloured vinyl edition sure to fly out, so don't sleep!

Review: Soul4Real returns to southern roots with a collection of 11 tracks from legendary names Malaco, Muscle Shoals Sound Studios and Alarm Records. In the 1970s and 1980s, Malaco in Mississippi and Muscle Shoals Sound in Alabama were pivotal in shaping southern soul as Alarm Records in Louisiana added its own unique contributions to the scene. This album shines a light on that great time and opens with Dorothy Moore's classic 'Girl Overboard' followed by stellar performances from male singers including Bobby Bland and King Floyd. Three tracks debut on vinyl, with Jimmy Jules' 'Having A Little Talk With Love' one of those standouts to be making its first appearance.

Review: Chicago's soul scene in the early 60s thrived on a dynamic blend of raw emotion and polished craft, and this collection is a testament to that unique balance. The arrangements burst with tight, syncopated rhythms, uplifting brass, and smooth vocal harmonies, capturing the essence of a city reshaping soul music. There's a raw edge to the production that keeps the energy unfiltered, while the melodies radiate warmth and storytelling depth. Each track contributes to an atmosphere of heartfelt resilience, showcasing Chicago's role as a powerhouse of innovation during this pivotal era.

Review: This boxset offers a gold mine of southern soul, funk and r&b, showcasing previously unreleased gems from the iconic Memphis label Goldwax. Kicking off with James Carr's 1969 funk groove, 'Your Love Made A U-Turn', it sets the stage for a collection of tracks that blend gritty southern charm with soulful ballads. The Ovations' 'I Miss You' stands out as a Motor City classic, finally issued on vinyl, while the flip side, 'What Did I Do Wrong'. with its harmonica-driven stomp, is a crowd-pleaser. Goldwax stalwart Barbara Perry contributes a country-soul ballad, 'Welcome Home Baby', a grower that contrasts nicely with her fiery 'A Man Is A Mean Thing'. Willie Walker's early, brass-filled version of 'Lucky Loser' is a highlight, offering a raw southern groove two years before his funked-up Chess recording. The album also features a thrilling mix of soul vocals, including the Lyrics and Vel-Tones' sublime harmonies, and a mysterious track, 'It's Really Alright', that adds an enigmatic touch. Closing with Phillip & The Faithfuls' dramatic ballad and Lee "Shot" Williams' southern rave-up, this collection is robust and enjoyable.

Review: Here, There and Everywhere: Black America Sings John Lennon, Paul McCartney & George Harrison is Ace Records' third compilation of soulful jazz and r&b covers of Beatles classics by Black American artists. This collectio has a deep Motown presence, acknowledging the Beatles' early admiration for Motown before the label's music even hit the UK charts. The album spans Beatles and post-Beatles compositions from 1964 to 2004, with standout performances by artists like Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder. The song selection takes listeners on an inspired journey through well-known hits, reimagined with rich soul and jazz interpretations. The Supremes' take on 'You Can't Do That' and The Four Tops' 'Michelle' reveal fresh, emotive layers in songs that are simultaneously faithful and transformative. Randy Crawford's stirring 'Give Peace a Chance' and Stevie Wonder's vibrant 'We Can Work It Out' underscore Black America's lasting engagement with the Beatles' work, while tracks like Sam Fletcher's 'Can't Buy Me Love' and Keb' Mo's 'Imagine' breathe new life into familiar melodies with jazz-infused warmth and soul. Each cover on the compilation not only reflects the artists' creative voices but also traces the Beatles' own roots in soul and r&b, bridging cultural influences that shaped music in the 60s and beyond. Here, There and Everywhere is an enriching and unique compilation that has one of the most enduring cross-cultural exchanges in modern pop history.

Review: Penrose Records returns with Vol. 2 of its coveted compilation series, featuring 14 tracks of sweet soul from SoCal's finest. This LP brings together hits from the label's top 45 releases over the past two years, including standout performances by Thee Sacred Souls, The Altons, Vicky Tafoya, and Jensine Benitez. Newcomers Johnny Ruiz & The Escapers and Junior Scaife also make a memorable impression. Each track is steeped in vintage late 60s and early 70s soul influences, but the songwriting and performances elevate them beyond mere homage. Following in the footsteps of Brooklyn's Daptone Records, Penrose and its sister label, Colemine Records, have spearheaded the modern soul revival. The music is organic and raw, recorded without sequencers or excessive effects. Highlights include Thee Sacred Souls' 'Can I Call You Rose?' and Los Yesterdays' infectious 'Nobody's Clown.' Vicky Tafoya's 'Forever' is a lovely lowrider jam that captures the essence of classic soul. Pressed on vinyl with a pure, warm sound, Vol. 2 is perfect for any soul enthusiast looking to dive into modern takes on timeless grooves.

Review: Originally released by the Chess label subsidiary Checker, this fresh new gospel-soul compilation record is both a congregation of great musicians and a guiding moral star, coming replete with redemptive and tutelary messages. Compiled by Honest Jon's and laid to heavyweight gatefold 2xLP, the defining trait of this firecracker LP is its rough-hewn live feel, which in turn cements each artist's to-the-ground concern with the then developing political tone of the era. From Martha Bass to the appropriately baptised Soul Stirrers, the record also serves as an induction into the brilliant productive stylings of one Monk Higgins, whose motto was "spontaneity" and whose touch is heard on all of the sheet songs you hear here. Get on up!

Review: Soul Cal is a deep dive into America's independent 70s soul scene, expertly curated by Eothen 'Egon' Alapatt. This compilation is a prime blend of the retro-utopian vision, where small-town record stores and garages across the U.S. might have been hiding virtuosic funk and soul outfits. The bittersweet joy of these previously overlooked musicians finally getting recognition is palpable, and the music itself is an absolute thrill. Songs like Luther Davis' 'You Can Be A Star' and Pure Essence's 'Wake Up,' the album is an impressive variety of styles, from heartfelt ballads to hard-hitting funk grooves. Anubis' 'Ecology' and Mixed Feelings' 'Sha-La-La' add a dash of social consciousness, while Leon Mitchison & The Eastex Freeway Band's 'Love Is' brings smooth sophistication. Mastered by Dave Cooley and team, the sound quality is stellar, making these hidden gems shine. Soul Cal is not just a tribute but a rediscovery, offering a bittersweet glimpse into an era of soul music often overshadowed by its mainstream counterparts.

Review: Since its inception in 2020, Kunimondo Takiguchi's City Music Tokyo compilation series has emerged as one of the most authoritative and reliable sources of 'city pop' gems - in part because he traditionally looks beyond the style's 1980s heyday and includes older and newer songs that fit into the celebrated style's colourful and Western pop-influenced aesthetic. There's naturally plenty of goodness to be found across the latest edition, subtitled 'Anagram'. The plentiful highlights include the joyous, boogie-era disco swell of Ami Ozaki's 'Love Is Easy', the quirky, big band-sporting eccentricity of 'Maya Maya Beach' by Yuko Kanai, the slow-motion reggae-pop warmth of Seiko Ito's 'Nagisa No Unlucky Boys' and the low-slung wonder that is Parachute's 'Kowloon Daily'.

Review: This Is The Breaks is a 12-track journey through the history of influential breaks in jazz, funk and soul. Each track featured has not only shaped the golden age of sampling but continues to be used by contemporary artists. The album opens with Millie Jackson's 1974 version of 'If Loving You Is Wrong I Don't Want To Be Right', famously sampled in 2023 by NLE Choppa. It also includes Debbie Taylor's soulful 'Let's Prove Them Wrong', used by JID in 2021. The collection highlights the enduring appeal of atmospheric tracks like Little Ann's 'Deep Shadows', which has been sampled by Grand Puba, Loyle Carner, and others. DJ Premier's masterful use of Joe Simon's 'Drowning In The Sea Of Love' for Gang Starr's 1997 hit 'You Know My Steez showcases his unparalleled production skills. Classic breaks like Lowell Fulsom's 'Tramp' and Fatback Band's 'Gotta Learn How To Dance' add to the album's richness, alongside iconic cuts from Bernard Purdie and Lonnie Liston Smith. These original songs continue to inspire, making This Is The Breaks a timeless celebration of musical innovation.

Here Soundway's longtime general manager Alice Whittington (aka. DJ Norsicaa) steps into the limelight, embracing her Malaysian heritage and selecting music from her heavy collection of Asian records. Taking its namesake from the Indonesian phrase for "let's go to the disco", Ayo Ke Disco spans ten rare slices of disco-funk, psychedelic funk, synth, city pop and Hindustani-Arabic rhythms, all painstaking licensed from the local labels whose efforts still often persist some forty years on.

Review: This Is Retro Soul 1969-1979 offers a vivid journey through the golden age of soul, spanning from the late 1960s to the late 1970s. Featuring a carefully curated selection of tracks, the album highlights the creativity and innovation of artists like Isaac Hayes, Millie Jackson and cult figures like George Jackson and Darrow Fletcher. From the deep emotion of ballads to infectious dance grooves, each track offers a fresh experience for both longtime soul fans and those new to the genre. Songs like Millie Jackson and Isaac Hayes' duet 'Sweet Music, Soft Lights And You' and George Jackson's 'Love Highjacker' evoke the elegance and passion of the era. Meanwhile, rarer gems like Cesar's 'See Saw Affair' and Ty Karim's 'Lightin' Up' reveal the depth of the soul scene's more obscure talents. The diversity of this collection, blending funk, r&b, gospel and jazz influences, creates a lively and sophisticated atmosphere. This Is Retro Soul is more than a trip down memory laneiit's a timeless reminder of the depth and brilliance of soul's most innovative period, inviting listeners to rediscover this iconic music anew.

Review: I'm Glad About It: The Legacy of Gospel Music in Louisville is a remarkable 2x12" vinyl set that revives the vibrant history of Black gospel music in Louisville. This collection is far more than just an anthology; it's a journey into a vital cultural heritage. The set chronicles the stories, challenges and victories of Louisville's gospel music community, highlighting a tradition deeply rooted in the city's Black churches. During the mid-20th century, many local grassroots labels captured and released key gospel recordings that formed a significant, yet nearly forgotten, body of work. Recognising the risk of these invaluable records slipping into obscurity, the Louisville Story Program, with generous support from The Owsley Brown II Family Foundation and Owsley Brown III Philanthropic Foundation, undertook the mission of finding, cleaning, and digitizing these recordings to ensure their preservation. 26 newly restored tracks are featured here and housed in a old school tip-on gatefold jacket that perfectly preserves this wonderful edition. Local favorite gospel groups such as The Ecclesiastics, The Solomonaires, The Gospel Motivators and The Singing Son of Zion are just some of the ones included in this package. This vinyl release is much more than just a compilation; it's a tribute to the enduring spirit of Black pride, joy and determination, preserving the rich legacy of Louisville's gospel music for generations to come.

Review: New Jill Swing is a vibrant throwback that captures the essence of late 80s and early 90s female r&Bb, offering a refreshing take on the male-dominated New Jack Swing era. This collection shines a spotlight on the talented women who matched, if not surpassed, their male counterparts, delivering smooth, soulful tracks that defined a golden age of R&B. From SWV's infectious 'I'm So Into You' remix to Karyn White's upbeat 'The Way You Love Me,' the album kicks off with undeniable energy. Gems like En Vogue's 'Lies' remix and Xscape's 'Love On My Mind' keep the groove going, blending attitude with vocal finesse. The compilation also includes lesser-known but equally powerful tracks like Ex Girlfriend's 'What I Will Do To You' and Chantay Savage's 'Betcha'll Never Find,' adding depth and variety. Each song is a nostalgic journey, perfectly curated to remind listeners of the era's distinctive sound. Overall, New Jill Swing is an enjoyable and well-crafted homage to the women who helped shape R&B.

Review: Soul Jazz Records' new Miami Sound 2 is a superlative collection of 70s soul, funk, disco and boogie featuring tracks from legendary artists such as Betty Wright, Timmy Thomas, Gwen McRae, Milton Wright, T-Connection and many more, all released on the mighty TK Records musical empire based in Miami, Florida. Centring on the curatorial efforts of TK Records founder Henry Stone, who is credited by Soul Jazz as one of the tastemaking pioneers of boogie, after the early ferments of gritty funk and soul formed out of the arrival of disco in the mid-70s. This compilation snaps up a distinct, unforgettable moment in the pivot from disco into soul, with essential tracks from Betty Wright, to Timmy Thomas, to Raw Soul Express, to T Connection all in tow.

Review: For hardcore soul fans, the tax scam label TSG Records is legendary. Finding original copies of the tunes it put out is all but impossible these days, especially for an affordable price, and so this new collection helps make having them all to hadn't a reality. It's is a one-stop shop for top-drawer rare groves, sensual sounds and fiery funk sounds that were all originally recorded around the ends of 70s in the United States. Ricardo Marrero & The Group opens up with the steamy South American sounds of 'Babalonia' and Lloyd Price shuts the whole thing down with the more swirling, airy and feel-good summer soul vibes of 'Music-music' and in between are plenty of gems.

Review: Studio One Soul 2, the highly anticipated second volume of Soul Jazz Records' acclaimed Studio One series, dives deep into Jamaica's enduring love affair with American Soul and Funk. This special 18th anniversary edition features a vibrant array of legendary reggae artists like Horace Andy, The Heptones, Cornell Campbell, and Ken Boothe, all of whom got their start at Studio One before achieving global success. The album features a unique blend of classic and obscure American Soul and Funk tracks, reimagined with a distinct Jamaican flavour. Standout tracks include Cornell Campbell's stunning recut of The Mad Lads' Curtis Mayfield-penned 'Ten to One,' Winston Francis' soulful interpretation of The Five Stairsteps' 'Don't Change,' and Devon Russell's powerful take on 'Make Me Believe in You,' which arguably rivals Mayfield's original. This collection, featuring a mix of classics, rare gems, and previously unreleased tracks, has been meticulously remastered. Perfect for a serious reggae enthusiast, this compilation embodying the Studio One ethos of reworking influential soul records into a Jamaican soundscape.

Review: The Wiz is a vibrant urban adaptation of the classic musical turned spooky-as-hell movie The Wizard of Oz, and it is set in Queens, New York, rather than the deepest Kansas as was the original. Featuring a talented Black cast, the musical stars iconic artists like Diana Ross, Nipsey Russell, Michael Jackson, and Quincy Jones and was a huge success. The soundtrack, certified Gold by the RIAA, was just as much of a hit and now it arrives on vinyl. The album includes hit singles such as 'You Can't Win,' 'Ease on Down the Road' and 'A Brand New Day.'
