Black Ink
Review: Otherwise known as Rob McAndrews, former James Blake collaborator Airhead is fast becoming one of the most interesting producers on the R&S roster since Blake's movement to more mainstream concerns. Taking a more explicitly rhythmic direction than previous release which concentrated on lush acoustic textures, "Pyramid Lake" combines rapidfire percussion, breathy vocal samples and lo-fi VHS textures to create the most unlikely club banger you'll hear this year. "Black Ink" meanwhile sounds like a maelstrom of kickdrums tumbling up and down a rubber staircase with stray hi-hats and handclaps thrown into the mix. Undeniably one of the best R&S cuts this year.

Gravure/Continuum (Fis Hayfield To New Mills version) (7:01)
Gravure/Continuum (Regis Whip Hand mix) (6:08)
Review: This 12" sees the welcome vinyl edition of remixes of Akkord's "Gravure/Continuum" from Fis and Regis which originally appeared on a CD issued through Fabric's Houndstooth label earlier this year. With the Mancunian duo possessing such a clinical take on rhythmic construction; it's always interesting to see how artists commissioned to remix Akkord choose to approach the task. Sometime Tri Angle artist Fis is on impeccable form twisting the track into paganistic string-laden ambience on his self-styled 'Hayfield To New Mills' version which brings to mind "Hashshashin Chant" era Demdike Stare. Downwards boss Regis goes for gravelly broken techno on his 'Whip Hand' mix though he channels similar levels of spectral foreboding to Fis in the underlying human groans set deep in the mix.

Sid's Conundrum
Ashford Swaithes
Dive Prophets
Review: Following a hell-raising salvo of collaborative live shows, Appleblim and Second Storey consummate their long-standing studio partnership with this first missive of mutant grooves that play on their respective strengths in the wild fringes of techno, electro and bass. "Sid's Conundrum" fits and starts around a granite heavy kick, using a viciously angled rhythmic kink to provide a jump off point for all manner of sonic matter, deftly crossing generic boundaries in the process. "Ashford Swaithes" takes on a more measured tone, heading into warm and undulating electro thanks to a particularly rounded bassline that leaves plenty of space for psychoactive decorations, before "Dive Prophets" offers up an astral concoction of Motor City synth lines infected with the rude shuffle of UKG at its most limber.

Formation
Rant Check (parts 1 & 2)
Review: After rip-roaring their way into recorded existence with their first EP for R&S, Appleblim and Second Storey are back in the saddle with the second in their trilogy of EPs, and once again the psychedelic and starry-eyed electro of their live sets has been distilled into diverse and surprising configurations. "Formation" takes a softer approach than some of their other output, bathed as it is in sweet and aquatic ripples of melody before dipping down into a spangled twist on deep house. "Rant Check (parts 1 & 2)" meanwhile flexes much more muscular tones, whipping up the kind of flexible basslines and visceral sound design that burst out of the first EP before mutating gloriously over a twelve minute run.

Hands In Mine
Review: With the success of his debut release on Untold's Hemlock Recordings still ringing in his ears, newcomer Guy Andrews finds himself snapped up by Hotflush for the next chapter in his burgeoning career in the bass nexus. Everything is altogether beefier than his Hemlock drop, eschewing the more delicate Metalheadz vibe of the first single for some thundering house/techno hybrids in the Joy O & Boddika mould. "The Wait" comes on with juddering mechanical death rattles and warehouse sized flecks of acid bass, all held together with an intricate percussive flair. "Hands In Mine" meanwhile sees a more percussive led variation on the A-Side, drenched in a foggier sort of atmosphere and led by booming toms and gurgling synths running underneath.

B-STOCK: No hand stamp
Review: ***B-STOCK: No hand stamp***

De Grey launched last year with a 12" from Webstarr, and now it follows up with the raw, rough and ready sound of Jack Angle. "Week-End" is a lithe, percussive beast of a track that matches bloated kicks with glassy hits for a tracky but distinctive end result. "6PNHHPE" is a looped up, off-kilter affair that sports an industrial techno thread but heads into stranger territory with ease. "Stablilizer" is a more balanced, melodic affair but again those distinctive metallic tones pervade the mix and inject some real character into Angle's music. "Selta" takes this approach and whips it up into the most lively, peak-time minded belter on the whole record, sneakily tucked away on the B2.

23 Summers Out To Tommy's Stashwell Chatz
Iron Oxide
Review: Bristol's champion of full-bodied and immaculately produced dubstep business brings more of his plush melodics to bear on the Halocyan imprint after sterling turns for the likes of Apple Pips. "Addict" is a prime example of his style, fusing crisp, sugarsnap garage drums with thick swathes of synths that dart and parry around each other with grace and skill. Komon steps up on the remix tip with a simple fashioning of the track into a chunky house groove that retains the essence of the original. "23 Summers" takes a more laidback approach to the steppiness, slinging R&B samples around in a delirous and boogie-inflected haze, while "Iron Oxide" plunges into a more rolling breakbeat flavour shot through with a healthy dose of melancholia. Finally, October gets jacking on a remix of "23 Summers" that piles on metallic percussion and bubbling acid in a linear and psyched out fashion that's as much industrial as it is techno.

One Year Later
Vanilla Imitate
Review: Hotflush switch the focus to the next generation of talent bubbling out of the forever fruitful Bristol area, welcoming mans like Arkist and Kidkut for a double drop of try and pin a genre on it electronic excellence. Both have impressed our ears with independent goodness for Apple Pips amongst others, and the decision to lock thought processes in the studio has clearly paid off, hitting the right note from the very first few seconds of "One Year Later". Typical West Country approaches to rolling rhythms are present, yet it's the sombre, searching tone that arises and locks hold which truly impresses. Pretty much sounds like Larry Heard if he grew up in the St Pauls area! Complementing this, "Vanilla State" lays slick vocal edits and frosted textures over glitched out swinging drum patterns, and operates with bass warmth cranked up to eleven.

Solitude (5:07)
On The Cusp (4:51)
Alone In A Timespan (4:05)
Calm (4:49)
Review: Keysound's South Coast connection expands as Atlas, a Brighton contemporary to Etch, is welcomed into the fold with the Solitude EP which stretches the boundaries of the label's rollage aesthetic, weightless synth experimentation and established sub heavy paradigms to near breaking point. Keysound followers should recognise the title cut, it's been a set opener for Dusk + Blackdown for well over a year and it's easy to see why. A palate cleansing opener subtly shifts towards intricate, skeletal drum flickers and sub gravity and the sort of emotional apex "Hyph Mngo" once delivered. Atlas deploys a similar approach on subsequent track "On The Cusp" whilst the B-side features some superb experiments in bass science. The dubby, bass-heavy rollage of "Calm" is a fine way to end a super Keysound debut.

Chunk (2:17)
Review: One of the earliest wave ambassadors to enjoy large label accreditation, Sami Baha delivers his first full Mu EP and doesn't disappoint: "Mavericks One" is laden with so much sub bass it's clinically obese while its topline remains slim-line and floaty. Deeper into the EP we're seduced by oriental charm throughout; "Still" and "Dough" massage the soul while "Tozko Paran" twists the senses with trippy Q&As that shouldn't work but really do. "Cataphract" plays the consummate slow-trap club bumper while "Chunk" pays homage to all the fatties out there with its restrained energy and delicate arpeggio-led dynamic. A stunning debut EP for Mu.

Rise 'Em
Metzger
Dog Sweater
Review: Hessle Audio's emergence from hibernation in 2012 really has seen the label release some of the most extraordinary music of its life, and this EP from Bandshell might top the lot. Tapping into the grainy, murky sound world of the like of STL, Shed and Actress, this record explores strange rhythms constantly on the verge of breaking out into a frenzy. The title track is comprised of little more than rattling percussion and dense, fizzy bass, while "Rise 'Em" places a jungle breakbeat atop a mucky hum. On the flip, "Metzger" takes the vibe of classic dubstep and fills it with subtle melodies and clipped snares, but "Dog Sweater" is the real killer - a homage to soundsystem culture whose threadbare rhythms are the only thing to stop you being dragged into the track's viscous centre. Make no mistake, this is a serious new talent.

Review: James Bangura steps into the ring with his new Shadow Boxing EP which is named in honour of his grandfather, Carroll Daniel Smith, who boxed for the US Army in WWII. It's a punchy take on tech house from the off, with 'Hazy Recall (Airdrop mix)''s off-grid beats swinging in from all directions with same the potency as a Mike Tyson uppercut. 'Drown It Out' has a garage swing to it as it slips and sides as fluidly as Mayweather's defence and 'Shadow Boxing' floats like a butterfly and stings like a bee. Last of all is 'Analyze, Socialize' which will have you on the ropes and sweating in no time.

Rollercoasters Of The Heart
So Cruel
Review: After seriously impressing with the debut sounds of Andy Mac last time round, Bristol imprint Punch Drunk step it up a notch further with this monumental release from Bass Clef. The local hero turned Hackney import graces our shelves with his first release in 2011 and it's totally been worth the wait, unveiling the rather glorious sounds of "Rollercoasters Of The Heart". There's an undeniably throwback nod to the euphoric days of rave gone by thanks to the swirls of lysergia tinged stabs and stretched out vox, but it's how Bass Clef marries them to a crisp groove of rolling sub bass and crisp off kilter house drums that has us hooked. Complementing this, "So Cruel" brings the mood down markedly, revolving around a half time swagger and bouncing subs dipped in purple menace which are the perfect foil for the requisite looped up chanteuse. It's the searing synth flourishes that jettison through the track without announcement that lift "So Cruel" to somewhere near the title track in our affections.

Bellz (Swing Ting remix)
Bellz
Review: Rising talent Beneath follows serious plate action for Tectonic and Keysound with the triple hitting EP of "Anti-Masonic ritual music" for Niche 'n' Bump. Run by one third of London club Wifey, Niche 'n' Bump launched in style last year with a 12" from Spatial and tapping up Beneath demonstrates the label remains on point as ever. By the sound of it, lead track "Strike A Pose" is less likely to be a Madonna reference, more a nod to MC Trim, focusing on a rather incendiary blend of 90's bleep rave, subtly rippling bass and the producer's trademark snaking percussion. As the Niche 'n' Bump press release succinctly states "this track is recommended for mixing by skilled DJs". Unlike the recent Pev and Hodge track of the (nearly) same name, "Bellz" has bell tones in abundance and also gets a rather fine refix from Swing Ting.

Trouble
Review: One of two EPs from the Sheffield-based man of mystery Beneath. With ruthlessly stark sound design, it's difficult to categorise this in any other way but 'heavy'. Four-to-the-floor beats, early dubstep darkness, UK-funky swing, techno-flavoured minimalism, it's all in the melting pot, and it's well worth investigating. There are four tracks in total, each one of a similar, addictively mixable flavour; the highlight for us on this EP was "Trouble" thanks to its cheeky reverberated 8-bit skank in the background. That said, the raw tribal elements to the beats on the title track were an instant hook for us too. Check it and find out yourselves.

Review: We're not sure how he manages it, but amidst the stripped down sonics, Beneath has managed to conjure up vibes of old school acid house, formative Detroit techno and proto dubstep (think early noughties when garage took a mad swerve for the underground) while ensuring the sounds on offer are totally distinctive and very much 'his own'. Each cut smacks with funk and mixability but if we're going to pick a highlight it'll be the title track "Send". Warm, hollowed bass tones and instant swinging groove, there's very little else like this being released right now.

Review: With his No Symbols imprint serving to issue forth the most personal of his artistic endeavours, Beneath offers up another slab laden with the kind of forward-thinking bass variations that have made each and every release essential thus far. "Golden Age" throws down a tightly-wound break beat with a catchy yet understated riff and plenty of moody textures and samples, while "Internal" takes things into wilder territory with clattering percussion and haunting sweeps of melody that plunge you into the same soundworld as early Shackleton. "Luisa" rounds things off with a more contemplative downtrodden house effort laden with rainy Sunday tones perfect for the Autumn time.

Limit To Your Love
Review: Saying James Blake is a man of many talents fits into the .Jessica Alba is attractive' school of pointless comments, but this 10" for Atlas marks the young producer's full vocal debut. And he has quite the melancholic croon too, with "Limit To Your Love" a wonderfully sparse track, with Blake displaying the confidence to allow his vocals to play off against some twinkling piano. A deep, subterranean bass murmur then arrives - and promptly disappears, before returning again sporadically - giving this track an idiosyncratic feel despite the impressive diversity that Blake has already accrued in his fledgling discography.

Review: ** REPRESS **Hessle Audio drop two tracks from the mysterious Blawan. Rumours are hinting that this could be a moniker for another producer but for the time being, but for now we'll have to settle for playing the guessing game. We wouldn't be surprised if this was a big name producer, with the title track wonderfully twisting cold, post-garage drums into jungalist syncopations. "Iddy" on the b-side, throws up an entirely different style of percussion - pointed metal on hollow toms gives the track a disjointed but totally danceable feel.

Review: Kwesi Darko returns with his first original Blue Daisy material since his weirdly underrated debut album The Sunday Gift from last year, teaming up with the unexplained entity Unknown Shapes for the six-track EP Bedtime Stories. One listen through and it's clear Darko has been taking his time perfecting a set of tracks with a breathtaking attention to detail and texture, and it takes a few more listens for all its subtle intricacies to truly show. It would be easy to cite everyone from James Blake to Burial to the majority of the Tri Angle roster to provide some context for tracks such as "Insomniac Love" or "Wet Dreams" but such comparisons don't really do justice to the cavernous soundscapes that Blue Daisy and the Unknown Shapes have cast on Bedtime Stories. The moments in the title track where ripples of purple funk break free alone are worth investigating.

Dark Hearts (Bok Bok remix)
Review: Getting ever more prolific with his own production output, Bok Bok issues forth a new white(ish) label for his Night Slugs imprint that should get the dance standing to attention in shock before losing its collective head in the next instant. "MJT" seems hell bent on twisting up a boogie refrain to breaking point, while the rest of the hyperactive beat daggers in a stop/start call and response melee for the future-minded to relate to in a year's time. His remix of Riz MC is an altogether more low-slung affair, as synthetic strains of elastic bass slither over a gun-cocking set of percussion and drunken locomotion.

Review: ***B-STOCK: Sleeve damaged but otherwise in excellent condition***

Repress alert! Wednesday: Hyperdub announce a new three track release from enigmatic producer Burial - his first solo work in four years. Thursday: Said records arrive on Juno doorstep. How's that for service (and secrecy)! The news came just a matter of days after the producer's collaboration with Radiohead front man Thom Yorke and Four Tet arrived on record shelves across the UK and promptly sold out amidst a frenzy of hype. There are three new tracks on offer here, namely "Street Halo", "NYC" and "Stolen Dog". First up "Street Halo" showcases the classic Burial sound; subterranean bass gurgles, trademark clicking beats and barely-there vocal snatches. A sweet childlike vocal pervades the sonic mist on "NYC" while "Stolen Dog" closes out with ethereal vocal harmonies buried deep beneath vinyl crackle. Stunning.

Review: Naturally, there's been plenty of hype surrounding this new Hyperdub 10", which features Burial indulging his often-discussed ambient influences. It's a typically creepy and ghostly affair, with the lack of beats - if not rhythmic elements - only serving to amplify the shadowy producer's impeccable sound design and brilliant use of manipulated field recordings. A-side "Subtemple" is particularly paranoid in tone, featuring as it does chilling melody loops, curious vocal samples, looped vinyl crackle and all manner of layered background noise. Flipside "Beachfires" is, if anything, even more dystopian, with Burial basing the action around the kind of pulsing chords that gust back and forth like an autumnal breeze.

Here we find some key Ed Banger players getting mucky with the parts; Feadz & Kito serve up a sassy slice of future garage, Busy P gets fresh with the old school pitched down piano chords, Canblaster presses the sexy button and finally G Vump goes all jazzy and allows more of the organic nature of the original shine over the weighty kicks.
