Ol Man Ek
Review: Bringing a measured kind of juke menace to the 50 Weapons camp, regular attraction Addison Groove this time links up with fellow Bristol bass maven Sam Binga for some short and snappy cuts that explore diverse corners of electronica while all riding that hyped-up tempo. "Rzor" keeps things strictly rhythmic with its rush of 808 beats moving through pitch tweaks and rubbing up against found sound percussion. "Thr3id" gets twisted up in melodic stabs and the kind of gnarly acid spits you might find on Drukqs-era Aphex, bouncing off steady central motifs in order to fire off as many drum machine samples as possible in a three minute time frame. "11th" is even further into deploying intricate melodic darts that zip through the rapid fire beats, delicate chimes offset by dreamy synths and stuttering samples. "Ol Man EK" whips all these feelings up into a perfect summation track, capturing the bittersweet-ness of early jungle and vintage deep house in amongst a positively futuristic flurry of percussion.

Soreab - "Cave Walk" (Cando remix) (4:45)
Review: Le Chatroom's latest multi-artist offering successfully showcases a string of up-and-coming artists whose music joins the dots between UK funky and a wide variety of global rhythms. Check first Soreab's richly percussive, sub-heavy and smoky 'Cave Walk', a dark, drum-driven excursion which Cando later turns into a more carnival-ready, sweat-soaked workout that sounds tailor-made for peak-time dancefloors. Amor Satyr also impresses with the hard-to-pigeonhole post-dubstep drum science of 'Hohohoi', which sounds like Digital Mystikz jamming with a bunch of Indonesian musicians, while UK funky starlet DJ Tess dons he Mala Femmina alias for the skittish, sub-heavy weightiness of 'Ruff'. Impressive stuff.

Buzzin10 - "Deceived"
Sully - "Feel It"
Point B - "Comfort Zone"
Warlock - "Too Late"
Review: Hard to pronounce, even harder to ignore and impossible not to like, Frijsfo continue to delve deeper and deeper into bass-tickled compositions with these four floor-friendly treats. Buzzin10 get sexy with a 4/4 garage cut that lays lush organs over a paranoid backdrop, Sully's "Feel It" takes us right back to the fuzzy two-step soundtrack to the turn of the century, Point B's "Comfort Zone" explores the icy messages of early Metalheadz via a Radioactiveman style bump n' shuffle breakbeat and Warlock closes the show on an awesome Vibert style acid wonk. Beautiful.

Lacuna Slide
WAL
Review: Surprisingly, this is the first time Aus Music boss Will Saul has released on the label under his Close moniker, following the eclectic wooziness of his Getting Closer full-length for !K7. It's a bit of an all-star affair, with Second Storey (AKA old pal Al Tourettes) and vocalist Kid A coming along for the ride. While the bonus cuts explore familiar bouncy, off-kilter, heavily electronic house and techno territory, the real killer is "No Love Lost" - a Nicolette style post trip-hop jam which places Kid A's vocal atop heavy post-punk bass, dark textures and jazz-flecked, near jungle tempo rhythms. Man of the moment Seven Davis Junior provides a superb remix, too, re-casting the original as a two-step influenced chunk of loopy deep house.

Various Beats From Sublime Artists Vol I

Derivate - "All My Homies Clappin'"
Beto Narme - "Let's Get In On"
Gantz - "Soul Is A Lie"
Stiver - "Bergamo"
Review: Istanbul's Sublime Porte describe themselves as a team of creative individuals, and what began initially as a net label back in 2008 has latterly blossomed into the physical realm. Sublime Porte's output has been inspired by various strands of electronic music, but it's the hardcore continuum that dominates proceedings on the split release Various Beats From Sublime Artists Vol.I 12". Derivate opens proceedings with "All My Homies Clappin," an effervescent exercise in Bass music that has the sort of musicality you would find on an Eglo B Side, whilst the spirit of Marvin Gaye is mixed up with murky basslines and swung rhythms on Beto Narme's contribution. Face down "Soul Is A Lie" finds Gantz in introspective mood and Stiver's final cut "Bergamo" has a touch of the Autonomics about it.

Review: With this release, the Zenker Brothers' Ilian Tape label has delivered something of a curveball. It sees experimental D&B producer and all round bass head Djrum join the party, sharing space with unknown quantity Struction. Djrum begins with broken techno gem "Untitled 9", cutting up sweaty broken beats, heavy basslines and deep techno electronics. On the flip, we are treated to the sounds of Struction, combining punchy breakbeats with ambient-influenced electronics on the rolling "Don't Blame", before moving further towards beat-less, end-of-night territory with the acid-flecked trip that is "Struktur".

Review: "Gazillions" marks a first VA offering for the Fever AM label. It calls upon emerging producers from around the world and kicks off with Russian duo Formally Unknown. "Lotus Turbo" is a squelchy electro workout with kick drums to die for. CCL and Flora FM then come together for "Iridescent Lake", an utterly wild drum workout that will blow your socks off. London based brothers Ed and Rob work together as Paper on the old school bleep techno cut "Beaman" before Silene rounds things out with "Jiro", the most experimental of the lot thanks to its hall of mirror feel, slithering synths and jerking rhythms. Fresh indeed.

Sleazy future dancehall vibes, the lean arrangements allow Rider's steamy dancefloor poetry to enjoy maximum effect as he explains his methods and techniques with the fairer sex with baritone abandon. Highlights include the tropical uplifts of "Bubble" and Logos cosmic twist on "She Want It Ruff". "FDGD" FTW.

CCL X Flora FM - "Liquify Interference" (6:59)
SMP - "Natty Bop" (5:38)
Review: For the latest release on her admirable Planet Euphorique imprint, Sophie Sweetland has gathered together a quartet of box-fresh club cuts from up-and-coming artists. As you'd expect, much of the material is psychedelic and intoxicating, reprocessing a range of vintage influences in a myriad of ways. Killer DJ's kick things off via the epic trip that is "Track 1", a saucer-eyed fusion of tropical house drums, ambient techno electronics and humid samples. Dj Donini raises the temperature further via the retro-futurist techno trip of "Donini's Dream", before CCL and Flora FM join forces on the bassbin-bothering tribal shuffle of "Liquify Interference". SMP rounds things off in fine style with "Natty Bop", a similarly bass-heavy fusion of skipping, post two-step beats, spacey sounds and low-end power.

Sheik - "Oxram" (4:21)
Review: Kouslin launches a brand new label and he's doing it total style. While no one can deny the crucialness of the name Le Chatroom, the real focus is on the music as the London artist tags up with two mates for a trio of far-out, forward-thinking bass/broken cuts. "Brothers" leaps with flautist delight while snake-like percussion rattles and rolls beneath. Aussie Nostro Hood winker Galtier gets his tech on with a Rolando style sense of melody and menace while Bumps man Sheik flexes a much slower jam, all 909s and raw machine soul. Covering corners you didn't even know existed, Le Chatroom has us in the palm of its paw.

Parris - "Dusty Glass Bubbles" (5:26)
Review: This new one on Martyn's 3024 might be a various artists affair but the tracks sit rather well together, which is even more remarkable given the diverse backgrounds of those involved: Noire with his super hard drums, Metalheadz affiliates Gremlinz & Jesta who link here with Sin, and Parris who makes some truly bonkers club music. Martyn's own "Frozen Bread Snaps" is the opener that most impresses with its delicate and skeletal drum programming and heartfelt chords. Elsewhere, "Door Of Guf" is a high octane rough rider while "Ballas" is perfectly off kilter and funky. "Dusty Glass Bubbles" somehow sounds exactly like it should with that title.

Review: "Shared Meanings" has been one of Mumdance's most ambitious and explorative projects to date; pulling together the four corners of the hardcore continuum and tying them in a tight bow, his mix has drawn elements and parallels between all genres and laced them in a narrative that mirrors and reflects throughout. Now, for limited time only, we have five of the 32 tracks he included in the mix ranging from his and Logos' totem track "Teachers" which pays homage to the UK's forefathers, to the pulverising thumpy bumpy techno of Nkisi's "Kinenga" via stasis sensation ambience from Space Afrika in the form of "After They Entered It Was Only Evident". Coordinates don't come much broader or deeper, "Shared Meanings" is Mumdance in full on explorer mode. Long may his meaningful trips continue.

Review: There's some incredible creativity happening around the 80-95 mark at the moment. The once wholesome and innocent Autonomic sound has hit its teens and it's getting just a little bit bolshy. "Small Victories" still breathes with the same blissed out sweetness but there's a darker substance in the beefy underbelly. "Gamma", meanwhile, is 100 per cent unruly; steppy, tripletty and saturated in deep, immersive drone-bass, it's an instant rabble-rouser. "Squares" slouches up the rear, lolloping along, covered in a trippy texture of counter melodies. "Electric Riddim" finishes this victorious journey with a heavy nod to both classical jungle and the future

Review: This debut release from the Dream Eater label is little less than a statement of intent. It features cuts from no less than six members of the extended crew crammed onto one action-packed 12". Proc Fiskal kicks things off with the thursting sub-bass, cut-up hip-hop yelps and full-throttle grime beats of "Come Here", before Charlux shows his melodious side on the jaunty goodness of "Riposte". There's some ghostly synths and aggressive grooves from Nights, a deep dive into sparse and heavy dubstep territory from Dr Hugo, and a touch of glacial, post-grime brilliance from Polonis. Best of all, though, is Sir Hiss's "Blood Diamond", which effortlessly underpins marimba style melodies with a punchy, post-dubstep beat.

The third EP is a tasteful split from Pugilist and Sun Basics - opener "Reflections" is a brilliantly watery, edgeless and dubby techno offering with rippling synths, bass and pads all disappearing to an infinite horizon. Following a whole string of heavily supported releases on the likes of System Music, Deep, Dark & Dangerous and Encrypted, the label is a new outlet for a fresh synth-led fusion style he's been developing gradually. Deep, musical, not shy of an 808 or a two-step or two, there's a touch of UKG, wave and trap deep across both sides. "Acecloud" is the big neon dreamer of the duo while "Cookies" crumbles a little more delicately and introspectively. An excellent launch release, we're saving our rainy day money for 002.

Review: Initially released digitally last month, fledgling Brooklyn label concern Youngbloods make their bow in the physical realm with this charming exercise in sonics from Sasquatch. Hailing from Burlington, Sasquatch has apparently been honing his productions in isolation for several years, developing from an early interest in hip hop beats to more frenetic rhythms and this is a fine debut for both artist and label. The No Sweat EP features three original Sasquatch productions augmented by four remixes and whilst the more demanding moments of a set will be perfectly serviced by the latter you shouldn't overlook how refined these originals are. "25th" features a grasp of piano tinkling melody you'd expect from Falty DL whilst "Hang On" is where Sasquatch shows off his talent for intricate rhythms. Of the remixes, Distal's is perhaps the best, not least because it appears to sample that goddamn slap bass from the Seinfeld intro.

Review: Schockglatze is a long standing collaboration between artists working across several disciplines. With audio-visual performances, band projects and international exhibitions thus far, they have been causing a stir within the art and music worlds. Spank has already collaborated with a range of acclaimed vocalists, including Warrior Queen, Sensational and Christoph Waltz. As a competent producer, he forms the solid basis for the studio productions of Schockglatze. Nik Nowak has attracted international attention with his mobile sound sculptures and worked with Chicago footwork pioneers like (the late) DJ Rashad and DJ Spinn as well as Kevin Martin aka The Bug. Graphic artist, VJ and video director Moritz Stumm aka Ultramoodem brings to the project an 'inimitable rhythmicity' while creating a singular technique of audio-visual effects: the aesthetic of which has become a signature style of the collective.

A cult 1994 Louie Vega classic, DVA's twist is unlike anything you've ever heard; all sirens and frequencies and bashy clattering beats over uplifting chords, it's both overwhelmingly heavy and absurdly soulful in equal measures and it will totally melt brains this festival season. Rounding up another year of dark experiments, Nervous Horizon invite Second Storey to bring 2016 to the warped, wrangled close it deserves. Hot on the heels of his "Bismuth" EP and Appleblim collaborations come three more adventures in pastures unclaimed: "Spin Cycle" is a grainy, decaying hypnosis loop, "Critters" is the type of two-step the devil dances to while "Sludge 3D" is a pounding slab of lo-fi fuzzy techno that unravels into a brilliantly trippy drum arrangement. Four tracks, all veering and weaving between genres and sounds, there's a strong experimental fusion running across the textures and tempos. 'A Demon In My View' is a frazzled, high voltage halftime piece that's brittle with tension. It sets the scene for the rest of the EP as 'Counter Culture' strip things right back for a blunt-nosed 120BPM techno march, 'Ashes' flips back into 140 mode with an almost electro-like deep space paranoia feel before 'Bedlam' brings us back to earth with a slow and low droney bump. Review: Appearing with increasing and ever-satisfying regularity on the far reaches of the electronic music radar, Mark Fell's Sensate Focus project returns for the cryptically number Sensate Focus 2, which actually marks the fifth 12" in the series for his eponymous label. The rules (if you can call them that) are much the same, plotting algorhythmic malfunctions through neon soul and finely diced percussion that snaps and whips with dexterity. However on first impressions much of the rhythmic irregularity that has made mixing earlier instalments a daunting task has been preserved for the lopsided vocal triggering, while the core groove itself comes on more tangible, at least for significant chunks of the roaming sides of this record.

Review: Originally debuting early last year on an eponymously named sub-label of Editions Mego, Mark Fell's Sensate Focus project was started as a way of exploring and recomposing '90s house music with a rotating cast of fellow producers. Limiting himself to a small number of soft synths and samples, the results are simultaneously clinical and enveloping, with results that combine strobing kickdrums with irregular percussion and warm, sensuous chords. The producer's latest subdivision of the original Sensate Focus integer (the first release was number 10 and has been split into increasingly smaller numbers since) is 1.66666, and sees Fell and Sasu Ripatti aka Vladislav Delay take the Sensate Focus project into unexpected musical territory; unlike the more obvious house influence of previous records, both the "X" and "Y" sides of 1.66666 seems more indebted to the stuttering rhythms and madly cut-up vocals of footwork, getting progressively more frantic as the vocals are pitched to breaking point.

Bastard Spirit
Review: With a fabric mix looming tantalisingly on the horizon, Berlin based artist Sam Shackleton launches his new Woe To The Septic Heart! imprint with a brace of new productions. Sprawled across the A Side is "Man On A String" (part 1 & 2), a rich percussive jaunt with heavy African tribalisms. As you'd expect from Shackleton, the sonic textures are rich and intriguing, with wooden percussion rolling in and out of the track, indecipherable vocal snippets, wood pipes and a broken bassline. Flip over for "Bastard Spirit", which is in possession of a droning bassline that'll probably shatter a few windows when played on beefy soundsystems. Killer artwork from Zeke Clough too.

Deadman (King Midas Death dub remix)
Review: Sam Shackleton's "Deadman" was the surprise hit of his recent Fabric mix - a sought-after gem that took his particular take on techno and dubstep in a thrilling new direction. Now, it's finally available on vinyl, alongside an impressive King Midas Sound remix from Kevin Martin. "Deadman" itself is the one for club plays, an intoxicating fusion of conga-led percussion - influenced, one expects, by the tropical beats of UK funky's most forward-thinking practitioners - and his usual densely layered atmospherics. The King Midas Remix, meanwhile, offers a spaced-out, heavily ambient take that delights and confuses in equal measure.

Review: Hessle Audio's recent moves have resulted in a new release from longtime DJ, Peach Discs founder and regular festival staple - Shanti Celeste. 'Cutie' is as kitsch as they come, blending snappy kicks and claps with synco-rhythmic straightness. Even Celeste's own gated vocals appear on the track, and it's clear by now that the producer and DJ's sonic identity revolves around the cute, the blushing, the doe-eyed. And for a label so mired in connotations to opaque, headsy chinstrokiness, it's a breath of fresh air for Hessle Audio to feature a peach-pink inner label on one of their physicals for once. Of course, UK techno fans literally measure their own sense of time by Hessle Audio releases. We can only hope they keep up the diversifying trend.

Make way for 'Bossano', a three track treat where full focus is on some precision Afrobeat/UK funky fusion drums and a great sense of minimal funk. 'Bossano' takes the lead with its drive and addictive topline while 'Manta' and 'Penza' strip things further back giving full focus on the groove and energy. It's not all doom and gloom.

Review: Fresh from his junglised Hoover1 investigations, Rene Pawlowitz returns to his Shed alias and makes his debut on Pinch's Tectonic with three ace flashbacks to an exciting time of fusion between dubstep and techno around the late 2000s. 'Try' sets the scene with those tumbling, smoky drums synonymous with the time. Set to the backdrop of a rising, psychedelic build and faraway vocal tones, it's a dubby side to Shed we're often teased with but never get to fully taste. It's backed by two more exemplary explorations; 'Box' is dub techno to the very core, all grumbling subs and industrial elements while 'Sweep' brings the four/fours into the mix for a big fat juggernaut finale. What an EP.

Review: Like many artists, Siete Caforce's releases were few and far between early in his career. Six years have now passed since his digital-only debut and he's now ready to make his vinyl bow. The four tracks that make up Agnosia are largely impressive, drawing influence from a variety of bass music styles - think 140, dubstep and UK funky - as well as gritty industrial music, the dark textures of pitch-black D&B and the rhythmic bounce of tropical house. It's an intoxicating blend that feels all the more potent thanks to his superb percussion programming and love of heavy low-end pressure, with the tribal "Susurro" and stabbing, occasionally dreamy opener "Risa" being our picks.

Sitting somewhere between dub, electro, ambient, techno and D&B, each cut is an abyssal experience powered by spacious beats and thick, moody otherworldly atmospheres. "Delphic" the banger of the set with 150 halftime kicks giving a stark two-step D&B sensation, "Break The Web" takes 20,000 leagues under the sea and squeezes the air out of us while "Triptan" brings us back up to air with ambient mysticism. Significant.

Vercetti, Lovedr0id & Chemist, Silk Road Assassins previously featured on the exhaustive label compilation Planet Mu put out last year and contributed to the Peace Edits 12? on Gobstopper too. The Reflection Spaces 12" represents their debut release proper, and sees the trio investigate a loose narrative theme based around a "retro-futuristic/dystopian city, with development into game music in mind" across seven evocative soundscapes. If you maintain any semblance of interest in current strains of instrumental grime you should be all over this!

Four tracks of retro-future cosmic space funk and loose drums, baggy bass and sprightly synths that jack and squiggle with minds of their own. Highlights include the ESG slappery and tight-stringed strums of "Holy Mackerel", the slinky bassline of "Women's Weekly" and subtle paranoia and trippy touches on "Mystery Shopper". Craig's bruk-edged remix is on-point, too. We're looking forward to what Oli brings next...

Using classic drum arrangements with futuristic sound design and manipulated vocal textures, cuts such as the brutalist 'Donut Dance', the pranged-out bubbler 'Night Bus To Peckham' and the hauntingly beautiful 'Baby Voice' hit in a unique and beguiling way that the Lisboner-in-London has made his signature. Review: Futuristic dancehall vibes galore: Montreal's SIM makes his debut on Nervous Horizon with five superb electronic instrumentals. All digging deep into the bashment and moombah sound, but wrapped up in electro and techno armour, the energy and weight behind each track sits somewhere right the centre of rave and soundsystem culture. Visceral, forthright and super physical, all focus is fixed on those bumping kicks and SIM's expert palette of sounds and textures. There are very few styles of bass or tech music that these wouldn't fit in.

Review: Simone Menomale debuts on presumably his own new label SM000 with music that is as sparse and abstract as the imprint's own name. These three tracks are eerie and empty rhythm explorations that come built on skittish bass frequencies with icy percussion. Sometimes the beats are broken with glassy textures, at others they are punchy and floating. This is music for the small hours, for cosy back rooms, for heady crowds who like to do lots of their own work with minimal input. It's a great start to a vital new label.

Named after his radio show at the time, it is a trippy, repetitive and at times contorted effort that works its magic via a simple/less is more approach. This is backed by a more upbeat and dancefloor ready take on the B side by fellow Hyperdub alumnus Ikonika (Hum + Buzz) who does a stellar job on the edit front - choice!

Review: Beware of the Naine Rouge! A Detroit folklore tale that contextualizes the city's spates of bad luck dating back over 300 years, local machine-abuser Sinistarr pays homage to the unique myth with a set of unclassifiable dancefloor smoulder sessions. Two major league tag-teams hit from the off as techno don Stingray313 pairs up for the loopy kickdrum stamping "Track 1" and ghettotech godfather DJ Nasty joins him for a furious footwork fire up "Shake". Elsewhere we get speak & spellbound on the dark stepper "Nonlinear Threats" and "I Pop, I Jit" shakes and stutters with such a rhythmic infectiousness you don't want it to ever end. Another perfect Exit release.

Review: Sir Hiss is a Bristol-based bass head who has had a fine recent outing on Idle Hands' City Road label 32A but now steps out with a three-track solo effort on Innamind. 'Uderzo' is some seriously weighty post-dubstep tackle with grinding and tough synth sequences over lurching drums with crisp hits up top. 'Sleep Paralysis' is a tripe mix of what feels like sound effects from a video game over icy beats with distant chord vamps adding some flesh to the bones. Last of all is 'Till The End' which features slow and precise drum loops under a hypnotic vocal wail.

Review: Having built up his reputation via a series of digital-only EPs, young grime producer Sir Hiss finally makes his first appearance on wax. There's been plenty of hype for the Bristol artist's debut vinyl two-tracker, too, with the few early copies that landed in stories selling out in record time. Listening to the clips, it's easy to hear why it's so sought-after. A-side "Danny Uzi Vert" is a deliciously melodious and summery affair, with accordion style melodies rising above warming chords, rich bass and an undulating, hybrid grime/dubstep rhythm track. Turn to the flip for "Taj Mahal", a more straight-forward club rocker built around bustling, swinging beats, jangly guitar samples, whistling melodies and notably weighty bass.

Review: Having set our world alight with his third Ilian Tape 12", 2012, back in the spring, Munich man Skee Mask delivers another essential collection of loose-limbed, broken techno workouts. Typically, he's on point from the word go, enveloping swinging, off-kilter techno breakbeats with swirling chords and cascading melodies on brilliant opener "Inti". His love of African-influenced polyrhythms is explored further on the ghostly, percussion-rich club cut "Kappelberg Chant" (which, incidentally, makes great use of choral chants), while "Routine" is a warm, loved-up and evocative tribute to rave-era British breakbeat-house. His debt to British dance music's formative years also comes to the fore on killer proto-jungle jam "Skreet Lvl Dub".

Review: Munich-based mystery man, Skee Mask, remains at the top of our Ilian Tape favourites. While we love the work of brothers Dario and Marco Zenker, the two label founders, we think that this guy's sound is the creme de la creme of contemporary, dub-filtered techno. Serum and Junt were both absolute killer EPs, and the Shred album was also on our list of the best releases of 2016, so we're pretty psyched about this new single, the curiously named 2012. The opening "Kordman Return (Swing mix)" is Skee Mask up to his naughty break sampling and techno wizardry, all broken and loose, whereas "Palo Alto" sees the producer in a surprisingly sturdy, head-first mood driven by solid bursts of 4/4 and wondrous synths. Over on the B-side, "Fjorward Flex Dub" swings its mighty swarms of drums over a minimal flurry of melodies, in what feels like a sublime reinterpretation of heavy, 90s power-house; "Glass Museum" closes with a real twist thanks to an abstract, wide-eyed landscape of dissolving, jazzed-out percussion and moody ambience. Excellent material, as per usual.

Review: Last year Skee Mask put the Ilian Skee Series on hold in order to release the brilliant "Compro" album on parent label Ilian Tape. Here he presents the second undeniably dancefloor-focused ISS EP of the year - a robust and forthright floor-tracker full of what the Munich-based composer calls "unstoppable fruity brain benders". It's certainly a vibrant collection of cuts capable of setting the pulse racing, with highlights including the mind-mangling analogue electro/techno/breakbeat fusion of opener "Juug", the deep two-step techno skip of "RZZ", and the IDM influenced shuffle of "Slow Music". Arguably best of all though is the teak-tough analogue electro wonkiness of "Play Ha".
