Review: Fresh from dropping another essential seven-inch with his regular Sound Combo band, Misha Paniflov has joined forces with fellow multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lee for a string of collaborative singles. This "45" sports two genuinely impressive cuts, each full to bursting with quality live instrumentation. It opens with 'Sigmund Jahn Bossa', a superb fusion of late 1960s library jazz (think Roy Budd's score for Get Carter and you're in the right ballpark), bustling bossa-nova and spiralling psych-funk. Over on the flip the pair continue to deliver lounge, influenced, tongue-in-cheek thrills via the cheap, Sideman drum machine rhythms, tumbling guitars, elongated Hammond organ chords and hazy backing vocals of 'Aquaria'.

Review: Fresh from making his first appearance on the party-starting Resense series, Shin-Ski (real name Shinsuke Taoka) delivers a rare, four-track "45" featuring a bunch of previously unheard productions from his jam-packed hard drive. He starts as he means to go on with 'On & On', a head-nodding hip-hop club cut crafted from bits of an old soul floor-filler, before smothering another toe-tapping beat with mazy electric piano solos on 'Classic'. Review: An impressively retro-feeling "breaksoul" choice from London label Digga Please?, once again delivering on their promise to bring the finest in funk, soul, disco, rap, b-boy breaks and "all that good shit". First released in 2004 on the iconic Freestyle Records, 'Get It On' is a bona fide cut & paste classic, its break-do backbeat and slippery funk vamps harking a filtered Rhodes line; here an obscure r&b libretto sings demonstratively, warning us of an incumbent detailing of her preferred mode of frisking: "this is how we like to get it on!" The record then segues into a timeless Gil-Scott Heron sample and breaks-tastic track slathered in sax, attesting to a so-called coolness that can be tapped by anyone willing to ease into it: "hipness is not a state of mind, it's a fact of life".

Review: During the disco era, there were numerous albums by one-off studio collectives that have since gone on to become sought-after items amongst collectors. One of those is undoubtedly the sole, self-titled album from Stratavarious, a 1976 set produced by sometime Philadelphia International Records arranger John L. Usry. This must-check "45" features two versions of one of the album's highlights: laidback, Latin-tinged, occasionally jazzy number 'Nightfall'. You'll find the extended seven-inch edit on the flip, where celestial female backing vocals and languid trumpet solos rise above a samba-tinged beat and luscious orchestration. Japanese producer T Groove provides an arguably even better A-side re-edit which is a little more groove-based while retaining all of the track's detailed, intricate musicality.

Review: A-grade diggers, label, shop and reissuers Mr Bongo are back with another of their essential offerings, this time in the form of a 7" taken from Swedish artist Sven Wunder's debut album Do?u cicekleri on new label Piano Piano. The resulting record is a seamless fusion of bright colours and bleeding pigments, real instruments and synthetic sound that is as worldly as they come. "Magnolia" here is the intoxicating a-side with its freewheeling drums and big lead lines, while "Lotus" takes us into a more oriental sound, with gypsy funk and dark-soul stylings making it delightfully hard to pin down.

Review: Brooklyn producer, bandleader and DJ Toribio returns for the second 12" on his newly launched BDA Imprint. Going deeper into his lifelong jazz obsession, 'Bring Dat Jazz' does just that whilst gladly exhorting us to do the same. Spanning three impressively arranged originals on top of a wicked remix of Sam Wilkes and Jacob Mann's 'Dr. T' on the A2, the overall impression gained here is one of an artist's deepest possible immersion in not just jazz as a whole, but its wildest contemporary abstractions through styles like deep house, garage house and post-punk. 'Jazz Misconduct' conducts itself rascally enough, holding itself together by the thinnest house-swing string; then the B-siders 'Bumples' and 'My Humps' herald a brief rise in tempo, coming shortly before an unusual hip-funk dub flip: a leftfield turn through a subtle, misty piano and vocal tinkering with the end of a storied Black Eyed Peas song.

A gorgeously warm, dreamy and tactile affair that effortlessly joins the dots between classy dancefloor dynamics, laidback electronics, freewheeling jazz musicianship and soulful vocal flavours, it's a genuinely brilliant and highly entertaining affair. Our picks of an extremely strong bunch include the broken beat/electro-boogie fusion of 'Coalesce (featuring Natty Wylah)', the gently two-step influenced deep house soul of Allysha Joy hook-up 'The Light' and the Balearic ambient meets post-dubstep bass music flex of 'Lifted'.

Review: Space Ghost has most recently been spotted dropping excellent albums "Aquarium Nightclub" and "Endless Light" on Tartelet, but now he's made a swerve for Funkineven's Apron Records to drop this sultry collection of jams that match bittersweet keys with rubbery bass and plenty of crooked funk that calls to mind broken beat and boogie as much as house music. From the swanging funk of "Prayer For U" to the slow jam New Jack Swing of "Mystery Angel", this is an album that champions some great eras of black music very much in the vein of Apron overall, but still says its own thing. Soulful at every turn and finished with an '80s digital veneer so slick you could trip on it.
