Review: A flummoxing fusion of jazz, soul and funk from 1972, Donald Byrd's Think Twice is ironically one of few jazz records that we don't really have to think twice about. Taken from the bokeh-grained, 1974 impressionistic prog-jazz opus Stepping Into Tomorrow - on which a whirlwind cast of performers including Mayuto Correa, Larry Mizell, Gary Bartz and Harvey Mason also appear - Byrd's unmistakable trumpet is heard whinnying across this LP-fronter, which rides serious thermals of flugelhorn, soprano and alto sax, ARP synth and backing choir. The vocals by Kay Haith are duly cautionary, insisting but seemingly also tantalising our worst impulses: "Maybe we oughta think twice... Before we start something nice / No need to sacrifice the spice in our lives, ooh ooh / our love's like fire and ice, pretty baby / That's why we oughta think twice..." A rare anti-YOLO anthem!

Review: Mystery-heavy UK leftfield soul outfit Sault's 12th album feels like a deeply personal offering wrapped in some of the most radiant production of their career. With Inflo behind the boards, the album moves fluidly between soulful reflection and uplifting groove. Opener 'The Healing' speaks to emotional growth, inner peace and shared vulnerability. The message is clear: healing is a journey best taken together. Tracks like 'Power' and 'Know That You Will Survive' are driven by rich, pulsing basslines and lush instrumentation. They groove with purpose, rooted in funk and soul while sounding unmistakably present-day. Cleo's voice carries a calm authority, especially on 'Know That You Will Survive'. a song that delivers hard truths with grace and warmth. 'Look Up' springs to life with Pino Palladino's bass anchoring the song's ghostly harmonies. Tracks such as 'Higher Than the Rain' and 'Real Love' layer gently but build with quiet force. Review: London-based producer Sholto (Oscar Robertson) teams up with Melbourne pianist Finn Rees for two collaborative pieces recorded in a short session at SFJ Studios. 'Love In Memory' and 'Bluebell' were laid down over consecutive days using analogue equipment, including mellotron, Wurlitzer and ribbon mics and mixed through a 70s Studer desk. The result is a measured blend of jazz-inflected composition and cinematic texture, leaning into the soft-focus feel of Italian film scores and 70s library music. 'Love In Memory' is the more stripped-back of the two, built around glissando keys and lightly arranged strings while 'Bluebell' adds bass from Matthew Hayes and develops in longer arcs, with warmer low-end and more defined structure. Both tracks avoid excess, favouring tone and pacing over virtuosity. String parts from Clementine Brown further the record's focus on texture rather than drama. The collaboration doesn't aim to be definitive but lands confidently as a quiet, well-formed experiment between two artists working with a shared vocabulary.

Review: There is a great backstory to Darryl Baalki. We don't know how true it is, if at all, but it goes something like this: he is an enigmatic figure raised alone by his mother, his only connection to the outside world was his father's record collection. As a child, he believed this collection contained all the music ever created. Convinced that new music could only emerge by reassembling its parts, he obsessively listened, memorised, and mentally reconstructed sound before making new compositions from existing pieces. This is his latest missive and it is deeply moving, from the percussive jumble of the opener to the earthy shuffle and seductive sax of 'Devil May Care' via the hypnotising trumpet leads of 'Nothing Will Break You'. Fans of Mo Kolours et all will love this.

Though they're hardly known besides the one track, we hope this one facilitates better biographic forensic work by future historians. What we do know is that the quietly took on a second life when Art Of Tones made an unofficial remix, depositing past the master bus a deeply affectionate rework passed between selectors like Antal and Radio Meuh. Word of mouth gave it freestanding floor legs long before it saw daylight, and now, after some anticipation, it enjoys its properest release, AOT further polishing the original's percussive heartbeat with heavier low-end and crisp production compared to the circulated remix.

Review: The debut album from Mexican duo Destino Sonido, namely electronic music veteran Juan Soto and rising vocal talent Labibe, mixes up disco swagger, upright funk attitude, synthpop flavours and just the tastiest smidge of pop instinct. 'Seduccion Galactica' has more than a touch of Vince Clarke's magic but rich simplicity about it, while closing tune 'Oscuridad' (You Man remix) adds an epic feel to proceedings, while simultaneously keeping them shiny and approachable. Dan Solo makes two appearances, Krofon pops in to lend a hand on 'Amandote' and Monsieur Von Pratt remixes 'Playa, Sol Y Amor' into a robo-disco banger. Review: Fresh from the release of her typically excellent Love Fest single - a masterclass in boogie and 80s synth-soul revivalism, like much of her output - Boston-based artist Saucy Lady pays tribute to the 1980s musical culture of her native Japan. Produced in collaboration with Aussie producer Slynk (who last worked with Saucy Lady in 2023), 'Yume No Tsuzuki' sits somewhere between vintage 'City Pop' and Japanese takes on 80s soul. As you'd expect, it's as musically authentic as you'd expect - colourful synths, punchy drum machine beats and boogie sonic squiggles aplenty - with Saucy Lady singing in both Japanese and English. The superb full vocal version (side A) is our pick, but the instrumental mix is also well worth club plays.

Review: The Jackson Sisters' 'I Believe In Miracles' (1973) had a staunch, timeless backbeat. And yet this unfortunate similarity to Hot Chocolate's 'You Sexy Thing', released two years later in 1975, made the two all too easily but falsely associated, though the latter would add a ravishing sexual antiphony to the Jackson sorority's peppy, devotional call to self-belief. Now Funky French League, with the help of label residents Monsieur Willy and Natalie Nova, drop by for a loyal looping back to the 1973 track, wresting the potential any mistake back from would-be dum-dums. Nova's vocals are doubled to high miraculous heaven here, as Willy's production slather the original beat in high-gloss brasses and strobing bossa nova motifs.

Part 2 now drops in quick succession and is another summer-ready blend of disco, funk, synth wave and hooky pop. 'Ardiente' is percussive, hip-swinging magic, 'Night Creatures' brings more driving grooves with withering sci-fi melodies and 'Destino Sonido' has sleek synth bass and Donna Summer vibes, while Disco 86 ups the cosmic energy with a fine remix. 'Somos Espacio' comes as lush ambient then chugging Italo, and elsewhere Matt FX brings a nice deep house rework to close.

Review: The Ray Contreras Band, fixtures of the 80s New York dance scene, first released 'You Make It Harder' as a 7" under the name Contreras / Sokolov / Milgrom. A rare, twilight boogie-funk track specially cherished among nostalgists, the record again avails itself this time in the form of a 12" single, expanded over four formerly unreleased songs. A supremely satisfying, deep-plombing mix takes the cake on the A1 as Elliot Sokolov's impassioned vocals recount the experience of romantic frustration through sharp, between-the-lines intakes of breath. 'Wishful Thinking', 'If You Want My Love', 'I Can Feel Your Heartbeat', and 'Miami Girl' follow as the criminally unreleased demos, all of which are as hit-worthy as the A, we kid you not. New York electro-funk at its finest, whiffing with tasteful cheese.

Review: Hungary's deep-funk stalwarts Dokkerman & the Turkeying Fellaz return with a sizzling 7"; we eavesdrop on a band as they swap out their usual rowdiness for a subtler palette, offering two instrumental excursions steeped in dusty groove and global psych-funk. Millinery A-side 'Hat' is a head-nodder in slow motion: wah guitar and swirling organ drift over a half-time pocket that hums with restraint. On the flip, 'Kilenc' lifts the tempo without losing the mood, leaning into West African swing and cinematic textures, still rough-edged and unpolished in all the right places. A less-is-more approach from the band, proving they can do introspective without slipping into the sedate.

It's utterly refreshing right off the bat with Vahagn M & Ycrow layering up jazzy keys with nice contemporary deep house swing, UNDO takes things into a vibey live jazz lounge and Your Friend Daao lays down shuffling and broken drum patterns that are effervescent with Neo-soul and nu-jazz energy. Elsewhere, Yerevan Calling's 'Next Step' brings stuttering jazz swagger and Shhau & Mesrop sink into a deep and soulful late-night sound on 'Andset'. There is a great deal of musical charm and originality to all of these fresh fusions, which makes this is vital LP.
